NDT INSPECTOR
Inspection and Material Technology, Qatar Fertiliser Company (QAFCO)
April 2004 till date, Mesaieed, Qatar.
About The Present Company :
QAFCO inaugurated its first plant in 1973. Presently QAFCO complex comprises four
completely integrated trains; QAFCO-1 (1973), QAFCO-2 (1979), QAFCO-3 (1997) and
QAFCO-4 (2004). Each train is made up of two units, one for production of ammonia and the
other for urea.
Through scientific strategic plans and integration of the latest technologies, QAFCO steadily
developed, over the years, in terms of nameplate capacity, production quantities, quality and
competitiveness of products, accordingly QAFCO has become one of the main producers and
exporters of ammonia and urea in the world. Now QAFCO has emerged as the world’s largest
single site producer of urea and ammonia with an annual production capacity of 2 million tons
of ammonia and 2 million tons of urea. The QAFCO-5 expansion project, which will be
completed in late 2011, will raise QAFCO's annual production capacity to 3.8 million MT
of ammonia and 4.3 million MT of urea and will make QAFCO the world's largest single-
site producer of both ammonia and urea. The QAFCO-6 project which is expected to be
taken over by QAFCO in 2012 will increase the Company's annual production capacity of
urea to 5.6 million MT. Consequently the project will strengthen the Company's position as
a key player in the global fertilizer market.
About The Department :
In QAFCO a full fledged plant inspection system has been established consisting of modern
instrumentation and the conventional NDT methods to continuously monitor the plant health.
Plant inspection is carried out on regular basis while plant is on stream and internal inspection
of both static and rotating machines in shutdown. This has helped in doing away with the
conventional philosophy of regular maintenance. Condition monitoring has regulated in better
plant availability besides minimizing the possibility of hazardous and catastrophic failures. The
following are the activities:
3. Responsibilities:
• Day to day duties is to carry out integrity inspection and testing
activities as per inspections and integrity management programs of static
equipments and piping in urea and ammonia plants.
• Carry out inspections and testing of all static equipment and piping of
plant facilities including NDT, visual survey, insertion and retrieval of
corrosion coupons, hydrostatic test, etc. as and when required.
• Carry out lifting equipment inspection and certification of overhead
crane, mobile crane, truck mounted crane, forklift, swing-jib, material
hoists, working platform and ship loaders.
• Ensures that all inspection and testing is completed according to specific
instructions, applicable work methods and procedures, and in compliance
with QHSE standards.
• Ensure all non-destructive test activities are carried-out in accordance
with requirement and approved inspection programs.
• Monitors and inspects execution of repairs and modifications, providing
advice on material selection, welding, etc., and performs relevant testing
prior to final acceptance.
• Follows up the Inspection findings during previous turn-around surveys,
for finalization of shutdown work lists.
• Maintains and updates Inspections database and processes Work Orders
in People Soft.
• To conduct welding procedure and performance qualifications according
to ASME Section IX.
• Provides recommendations on choice of repair procedures, selection of
materials etc.
• Carry out positive material identification under the scope of stores
material inspection for critical items such valves, pipes and fittings,
welding consumable, fasteners and structures.
• As a Radiation Protection Officer, to ensure all radiation activities
includes industrial radiography and radiation level gauge carried-out
safely according to international and Qatar's rules for radiation
protection.
• Special assignment is to perform Thermograpgy inspection.
