This document analyzes conventions used in magazine front covers, contents pages, and articles based on an example from NME magazine. It then shows how the student's media product follows or challenges these conventions. For the front cover, conventions like placing the magazine name at the top and articles on the side are followed, while a bold color scheme is used to attract readers. The contents page splits articles into categories and lists page numbers, both common conventions. Double page articles use large images, pull quotes, and column formatting similar to magazines. Some elements are modified, like adding more images to the contents page, to further engage readers. Overall, the student draws from real magazine conventions but makes some adaptations to better suit their intended purpose and audience

Media question 1
1. EVALUATION QUESTION 1
In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
2. FRONT COVER
Here we have a medium
close up of the two
artists faced back to
back wearing the exact
same clothes with their
hair very similar. This is
to create a ‘shadow’
effect as the artist is
‘The Last Shadow
Puppets’.
All the other articles featured
at the side of the page. This
is a typical convention of a
music magazine.
The name of the magazine
is placed at the top of the
page. This is also a
convention of a magazine.
The bright red and
black colour scheme
attracts the reader.
The artists eyes are
looking directly into the
camera.
The bar code is
placed at the
bottom of the
page, which is
typical of a
magazine
3. MY FRONT COVER
The name of the magazine
is placed at the top of the
page just like NME as that
is a conventions of a
magazine.
Different to other magazine
I have avoided direct mode
of address, as I felt it would
follow the genre, if I made
him look miserable and
avoiding the fame.
I have used a medium close
up, as I wanted it to show
the guitar in his hand as
that is a big factor of the
image.
The bar code is
placed at the
bottom of the
page, which is
typical of a
magazine
All the other articles featured
at the side of the page. This
is a typical convention of a
music magazine.
Like NME I have used a bold colour for
my house style to attract the reader,
and make it more noticeable on the
shelves.
4. CONTENTS PAGE
Here the articles are split
up into categories, which
is a typical convention
as I have discovered.
The date is allocated at
the top of the page.
The name of the
magazine is seen again
as it is placed at the top
of the page.
The writing is a lot
smaller.
There are limited
images on the contents
page.
The page number is placed
on the right of the actual
article. This is another
convention of a magazine.
The pages are also again on
the side of the magazine.
They have competitions
to promote the website
as well as the magazine
its self.
5. MY CONTENTS PAGE
The writing is a lot
smaller, similar to NME.
The name of the magazine
is seen again as it is placed
at the top of the page which
allows the reader to
remember the magazine
more.
Unlike NME I had decided to
add more images, as I felt it
would attract the reader
more.
The page number is placed
on the left of the actual
article and they are joined by
the actual article information.
The articles are split up
into categories, which is
similar to NME as that is
what I aspire my
magazine to be like.
6. DOUBLE PAGE ARTICLE
Instead of having a
headline the writer
has chosen to put a
quote from the
artist. This is done
to attract the reader
and make them
want to read more
of the article.
The image is large
and the artist yet
again has their eyes
directly facing the
camera. This is done
to also attract the
reader.
Here the first letter
of the article is
large and bold.
This is also a
convention of a
magazine as it
leads the eyes of
the reader to the
start of the article.
The colour scheme matches
the colours she is wearing. The article is placed in
columns also a typical
convention of a magazine.
The page
number is placed
at the bottom of
the page.
7. DOUBLE PAGE ARTICLE
As well as having a
headline I have also
added a pull quote to
show what the band
are like before actually
reading about them
Similar to NME, the page
number is placed at the
bottom of the page.
The article is placed in columns
Like most magazine as it makes
it easier to read and to
understand
The image is large and
the artist yet again has
their eyes directly
facing the camera.
This is done to also
attract the reader like
NME and to show the
band is confident.
