2. The Northern Mountains of India
Himalayas stretch across the northern boundary of India. These
are the highest mountains in the world. They stretch from Jammu and
Kashmir in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east. They form a natural
boundary between India and china.
The Himalayan ranges pass through many Indian states. They are
Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, West
Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh and other North- Eastern States.
3. The Himalayas can be divided into three
parallel ranges with large valleys.
The great Himalayas or Himadri
The lesser Himalayas or Himachal
The lower Himalayas or Shiwalik
The mountains decrease in height from west to east.
The himadri is the highest range of Himalayas.
It has the highest peaks of the world.
The lesser Himalayas – Himachal
The Himachal range is found between The Himadri And The Shiwalik.
Mountains in this range are not very high though winters see snowfall, the
summers are cool and pleasant.
4. THE GREAT HIMALAYAS OR
HIMADRI
The Himadri is the northern most range. Its average height is over
6000 meters above the sea level. It contains the highest peaks.
Mount Everest, the highest peak of the world lies in this range in
Nepal. Other highest peaks are mount K2, Kanchenjunga, and
Annapurna. The mountains hear are always covered with snow.
The climate is very cold throughout the year.
5. HIMACHAL RANGE
Many beautiful hill stations such as Shimla,
Mussoorie, Nainital, Almora and Darjeeling are
located in this range.
6. The range has thick forests of pine,
oak, deodar and fir trees.
7. SNOW SKIING
It has some beautiful valleys such as the valleys of
Kashmir, Kullu And Kangra.
8. Glaciers of this range give rise to many big rivers such
as the Ganga, Yamuna, Satlaj, Indus and Brahmaputra.
9. THE LOWER HIMALAYAS OR SHIWALIK
The shiwalik is the southern most and lowest range of the himalayas.
The areas at the foothills of the shiwalik range is called the tarai
region. This area has thick forest and many varieties of wildlife.
10. The climate is suitable for growing crops. The rainfall is heavy.
Many fruit trees such as apples, pears, apricot, cherry, grow hear.
Steps are cut out in the slopes of hills for farming which is known as terrace
farming. Crops grow here are rice, maize, sugar cane and potatoes. Because of
the pleasant climate people love to visit these hill stations in summers. Some
important passes are found in this range.
