A good structure is essential: The
two-funnel model of a paper
Start broadly: Why is
this topic important?
End broadly: Where
is this topic heading?
What can we expect
to come out of it?

Outlines and reverse outlines can be
extremely helpful
Don’t worry about
smoothing your writing
until you are reasonably
happy with the structure
Periodically rename your work-in-
progress so you have the option of
returning to an earlier version….
© 2015 American Society of Plant Biologists
Polishing: Use topic sentences-
People read in F or E patterns
http://www.jarimbi.com/writing-web-part-1/
Reverse outlining:
The first line of each paragraph should be sufficient to convey your meaning
Read just the headings and topic sentences of the handouts

(i) Never use a metaphor, simile, or other
figure of speech which you are used to
seeing in print.
(ii) Never use a long word where a short
one will do.
(iii) If it is possible to cut a word out, always
cut it out.
(iv) Never use the passive where you can
use the active.
(v) Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific
word, or a jargon word if you can think of an
everyday English equivalent.
(vi) Break any of these rules sooner than
say anything outright barbarous.
-George Orwell, "Politics and the
English Language," 1946

Write “simple, declarative
sentences”
I am not, indeed, sure whether it is not true to
say that the Milton who once seemed not
unlike a seventeenth-century Shelley had not
become, out of an experience ever more
bitter in each year, more alien to the founder
of that Jesuit sect which nothing could induce
him to tolerate.

What can we learn from post-
publication peer review?
Maintain access to original research results; primary
data should remain in the laboratory and should be
preserved for a minimum of five years or for as long
as there may be reasonable need to refer to them.

Mole. (2007). Rebuffs and rebuttals I: how rejected is rejected? J Cell Sci. 120: 1143-1144.
The just go away rejection (they never, ever want to
see it again)

“Whatever you do next, here is the most
important thing: Don’t write back today.
You are angry and hurt, and the things
you will say today (even if you think
you’re being extremely reasonable) you
will come to regret”

Finally, as awful as it sounds, you have to thank the
reviewer again, because you have to beg them to change
their minds. `Again, we thank the reviewer for the effort
that has gone into evaluating our work, and hope that in
addressing each of these points, he/she now agrees with
us that the submission is substantially improved.'
Yes, you feel like the worst sort of kisser-upper. But again,
put yourself in the place of the reviewer. He or she is busy,
and because they took time out of their busy day, some
time ago, to read and comment on your paper or grant,
they are now being tapped to drop everything at their
earliest convenience and read your revision. It will not
have come at a welcome time, because it never does.

Finally, as awful as it sounds, you have to thank the reviewer again, because you have to beg them to change their minds. `Again, we thank the reviewer for the effort that has gone into evaluating our work, and hope that in addressing each of these points, he/she now agrees with us that the submission is substantially improved.' Yes, you feel like the worst sort of kisser-upper. But again, put yourself in the place of the reviewer. He or she is busy, and because they took time out of their busy day, some time ago, to read and comment on your paper or grant, they are now being tapped to drop everything at their earliest convenience and read your revision. It will not have come at a welcome time, because it never does.
