Developing a Learning Portal
What is a Portal? A gateway or entrance. (new slide)
In the computing world it refers to a web site that provides links to other related web content.
A learning portal provides access to learning resources and tools to target a specific business goal, audience or subject area.
Portals afford the opportunity to blend multiple modes of learning: combined into one consolidated holistic, dynamic learning experience.
It’s really about the Learner need. We need to develop learning experiences that are learner centric.
With a custom learning portal we can create a “flipped classroom” like environment where we put the learner in control.
Creating a learning environment that can grow organically with org and can adapt to learner needs.
Develop and Retain talent.
What is a Portal? A gateway or entrance. (new slide)
A learning portal provides access to learning resources and tools to target a specific business goal, audience or subject area.
Show of hands: How many of you have implemented portals or have experience…. portals used in your organization?
But it’s really about the Learner need.
We need to develop learning experiences that are learner centric.
We talk about the “flipped classroom” to put the learning in the learners hands.
Creating a learning environment that can grow organically with org. Can adapt to learner needs. Develop and Retain talent.
Portals afford the opportunity to blend multiple modes of learning: classroom, coaching/mentoring, formal e-learning, social peer-to-peer informal learning, reference and performance support, etc.
combined into one consolidated holistic, dynamic learning experience.
Ultimately, a portal provides custom learning experience, specifically designed for your business and your learner audience with no compromises.
So, How is a custom learning portal different from an LMS?
In the case of NTS, depending on the requirement, they can be very similar.
While not a hard rule, LMS is often configured to provide a superset of content and tools which covers many subject areas and addresses the entire learner audience within an organization.
Where a portal is generally focused on a specific business goal, audience or subject area.
With NTS it really a degree of customization.
With a custom learning portal, where we begin with the desired user experience, and let that drive the design.
We take a lesson from Steve Jobs – For Steve, consumer empathy was a key design driver. He designed the user experience first, then back filled the technology to provide that user experience. For L&D professionals, a portal provides that same opportunity.
NTS provides customizable home pages and skins provide a portal experience.
Flexible layouts and widget functionality provides a high degree of flexibility.
Best of both worlds
Ultimately, a portal provides custom learning experience, specifically designed for your business and your learner audience with no compromises.
Sometimes a specific learning goal is better served with a custom portal approach.
And to determine this, we should first understand what a custom portal has to offer.
The sky is the limit. If it can be displayed or distributed on the web, it can be included in a portal. But here are a number of popular features we see:
Leaderboards – Provides a fun competitive environment to motivate learners
Badging – A system for earning and collecting awards
Wiki – Allows members to post and share documents and information
Blogs – Managers or portal owners can post articles and solicit feedback
Forums – Facilitates discussions on topics related to the portal
News – Managers and portal owners can disseminate important info, providing up to the date info and keeping the site current
Video Posts – Similar to News, it provides a “channel” for portal topic related messaging
Surveys – A method to collect opinions from employees about a product, topic or the site itself
Feedback Form – Another method to collect input from the learner audience, via email
Reference articles – Anything from product brochures to articles that support the learning topic
Job Aids/Performance Support – Just in time reference documents
The consolidation of learning resources creates a synergy that results in a better learning experience.
A custom learning portal can:
Display learner’s course assignments and learning activities front and center to drive participation and completion
Promote topic driven informal learning through wikis, blogs and other social media tools
Make contextually relevant reference content and information readily available such as process documentation, product brochures, and other reference materials
Integrate easy-to-use content management distributing up to date news and information
Motivate learners with competitive leaderboard functionality
Reward learners with badging and other awards
Integrate relevant content from other systems such as performance management, financial management and other HR systems
Display custom reporting and analytics
Provide Surveys and polls
Another portal feature I’m amending to my list here is the ability to integrate other business processes into the training workflow.
Integration and aggregation of different resources (content, data, tools) into one website.
Let’s look at how this all comes together.
The Glue that pulls it all together and makes it feel like one site.
Single sign on completes the integration, to make the portal feel like one coherent site.
Learning portals are completely custom websites designed for specific training goals. Here are some of the key attributes and features that a learning portal offers:
Tailored Learning: Portals afford us the opportunity to build personalized learning experiences for a specific audience. Learning “on a silver platter”. Just what they need without the fat.
Learning Paths: Portals can provide clear multi-modal paths or learning maps, with direction and support that provides context and explains how the pieces fit together. Learning paths can be displayed with a custom visual and indicate progress as each step toward the learning goal is completed.
Centralized: All the important content and informational tools that help you with your job are in the same place.
Encourages loyalty to the site by providing a go to place for all learning and knowledge share activities for that audience or subject area.
And, it’s a time saver. The employee knows where to go to easily get the information they need. For example, a busy executive, even if she has the drive, may not have the time or the resources to actively seek the information she needs from the already overcrowded information jungle.
Combines formal and informal learning modes: we know that informal learning from peers, and learning on the job, accounts for 70% of what we know. Portals afford us the opportunity to integrate on-the-job and other informal modes of learning with formal learning modalities to provide a complete holistic training experience.
Relevant Contextualized Messaging: Motivate learners and drive training with regular messages, news and alerts that are job or role relevant. Messaging can also be centered around new programs, pending deadlines, new products and other goals of the group represented by the portal.
Promotes Continuous Learning: An ongoing learning relationship. It becomes the go to place to share and consume the latest news, and information.
Motivation: We know that it is often not enough to simply provide learners with training resources. We need to motivate them. Portals can leverage gamification strategies to motivate learners including badging programs, and leaderboards.
Promotes Sharing of Ideas and Information: Imagine a suggestion box feature where learners provide ideas, suggestions and commentary: for example sales ideas, which are submitted to a sales manager or team to vet and approve for posting on “Ideas from your Peers” board.
Facilitates Development of Best Practices: managers and employees can all contribute to developing best practices, and continually refine them. As suggestions and ideas are approved they are established as policy, we have effectively created a community of practice.
BTW: I think we all appreciate and understand the value of providing a mechanism for tapping into the brain trust of your company’s employee population. The employee feels recognized, as part of the team and he/she becomes emotionally invested.
Integrate training with business process: Imagine a sales portal that displays sales figures for the company’s products. It indicates that a specific product is not selling well so the sales manager provides some new strategies for selling that particular product. And, by the way, some of those strategies may have come from a front line sales person who shared their ideas on the portal. Learner curated content, vetted and approved by management, turned into best practices, just in time.
Common Applications for Learning Portals
New Hire Onboarding
Sales Training
Service Training
Manufacturing Training
Compliance Training
Technical Training
Extended Enterprise (external audiences ie: supply chain)
So, what are your ideas? What sort of portal applications have you seen? Or, perhaps you have a new idea?
PRODUCT TRAINING
Looks like everyone is ready for lunch!
Demonstrate how a portal can address a number of specific business challenges within an organization.
Let’s look at a wireframe of an example portal application: Onboarding
Each component feature and the source of that information or tool.
