Question 2
1. How Effective is the
Combination of Your Main
Product and Ancillary Task?
2. Initial Idea - Motif
Prior to making our final music video product, as a group, we decided that a motif was needed
in order to help sell our artist.
From constructing initial research into other girl groups, we found that the motifs used were
very subtle, either in terms of displaying a light or a particular colour at the start of each layer.
This therefore led us to use a colour as our motif. The colour we agreed on was white due to
the natural ambiance that the girls within our band portray and the additional belief that the
colour would automatically be identified to our target audience (those between 13-18).
Furthermore, this colour then became established with all of our products, including that of the
digipak and poster. Due to this, we believe that our target audience will not only be able to
immediately associate the colour white with the group, but that it will also help to sell the band
in terms of factors such as the clothing that they wear.
3. Why White?
When identifying the meaning of different colours, we came to the conclusions that the
connotations of white best suited the girls within our band. This was because white is associate
with purity, naturalism, youth and innocence. We believed that these characteristics were very
important in terms of how we wanted the band be portrayed to the target audience and the
mannerisms that we believed the target audience would have themselves.
However, we firstly thought that a brighter colour would resemble the chosen track more. This
was due to the meaning of the song being about having fun and partying. The only problem
when using such a bright colour (such a yellow or green) was that in terms of the ancillary tasks,
we didn’t want brightness to to look too much and too young (therefore appealing mainly to a
younger target audience than ours – for e.g. those aged between 11-14).
This therefore meant that we stuck to the original idea of white, due to the simplicity and
natural ambiance that it represents as a colour and the connection that this has with the way
we wanted to girls to be sold.

conveyed.
6. Font
In terms of the font, we chose to use a graffiti based design in order to maintain the vibe that
our band convey. The graffiti not only reflects what the band is about (in terms of being
street/urban based), but also represents the clothes that they are seen wearing on screen.
In terms of why we chose this font, similarly to the motif, it was due to the belief that it would
help establish our target audience more clearly. This can be identified in terms of the font,
motif and clothes that are consistently used throughout our final product and the ancillary
tasks.
Without having a font that our target audience could immediately relate the band with, it
would mean that the track would be less likely to sell and our artists would be less likely to be
successful in terms of an up and coming group. In addition to this, when constructing initial
target audience research, we found that individuals were more likely to buy an album or a CD
that was attractive to the audience in terms of relating directly to genre of the music on the
track.
