Parent letter term 4 2017 18 (Upper Primary)
1. Dear Parents,
With the summer term now underway, we would like to share with you what is happening in Upper
Primary.
Our topic plan is attached. The Wizard of Oz continues from last term, culminating in a performance
at the beginning of June. Our RME for this term is Islam, covering Ramadan and Eid-al-Fitr.
As well as Wizard of Oz related Literacy and English activities, pupils will continue group reading,
covering a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. They will carry out individual and paired/grouped
comprehension activities relating to these. Weekly spellings are to be practised at home, with
challenges given to write sentences which reinforce grammar teaching points. There will be a focus
on presentation, including handwriting and organisation of written work across the curriculum.
There will also be a class novel for the children to listen to and enjoy.
In Numeracy and Maths, following on from Money & Finance and Measurement last term, pupils will
be working on Fractions, Decimals & Percentages (as appropriate) and Multiples, Factors & Primes,
moving on to Information Handling and Angle, Position & Movement. So far this term we have been
revising times tables and what we know about fractions. We will be marking National Numeracy Day
which occurs on 16th
May.
Upper Primary will also take part in a whole school, Orkney wide interdisciplinary project with a
Japan theme. This will form a whole day of learning later in the term and is based around STEAM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics).
As part of Health & Wellbeing, this term's PE focus is on athletics and ball games. There are planned
opportunities for further learning and participation through after school clubs and visits from
specialists. The primary department is registered for a Sport Scotland School Sport Award, so we will
be working towards improvements in various aspects of sport and fitness. Of course, the North Isles
Sports takes place here this year too!
Pupil will also be learning 'All About Us - Living and Growing', details of which will be sent separately.
In French, pupils are going to concentrate on Food & Drink. Mr Pietri has sent the following
information:
Revision of masculine/feminine/plural articles and the partitive article (some).
How to say we like something BUT don’t like something else.
Describe what you have for breakfast and give and justify your opinion regarding food.
P6 and P7 pupils will be continuing to learn Spanish for half an hour a week, also with Mr Pietri.
P7 pupils will have various S1 transition activities, with details and dates yet to be confirmed. Also,
P3 pupils will join us during the term to aid their transition, with both class teachers. Our topic work
together will hopefully have eased this transition to an extent already.
Pupil reports will soon be sent home, with a date for parents' reporting afternoon to be confirmed.
Best wishes
Mrs M Dennison and Mrs W Groat
