1. Term 3 - Rooms 12,13,16 and 18
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to the start of another fantastic term of learning for our students. We would also like to take
the opportunity to welcome our new Korean students who will be starting with us in week 2.
Our planning in each curriculum area is integrated as far as possible into our concept for the term. Our
concept for term three is INNOVATIONS and our focus curriculum area is Technology. The students
will learn and will be assessed on the following understandings: Technological innovations (can)
develop through our needs and wants; curious people wonder how things work, use their imagination
and think creatively; by taking risks and persisting innovative people use a technological design
process (to address a need or want).
Numeracy
Numeracy focus for term 3 is multiplication and division and ongoing maintenance of knowledge. Our
strand unit this term is statistics where students will carry out their own statistical investigations.
Statistical investigations provide links between other areas of the mathematical strands and
applications of them. At this level, it relies heavily on number, pattern and graphing as well as precise,
logical thinking and communication. Statistical investigations in its various forms, allows mathematics
to interact with other subject areas. This is especially the case in Technology where statistics is an
important tool to produce and represent data.
Literacy
Literacy this term will be integrated into our technology based concept. This will include reading and
writing and presenting and viewing. In reading at this level, students are expected to use and integrate
a variety of comprehension strategies in order to understand, respond to, and think critically about
these texts.
In writing students are expected to increase their level of control and independence in selecting
processes and strategies to write texts for a range of purposes that includes recounting, describing,
narrating, reporting, arguing, and explaining. This term we will focus on the purpose of ‘argue’ in
preparation for writing persuasive speeches. The year 5/6 speech competitions will be held in week 8.
Poetry will also be part of our literacy programme this term where students will have the opportunity to
appreciate, enjoy and explore the rich and lively language that poetry has to offer and learn how these
language devices can be used to enhance other writing purposes.
PE
This term the children will continue to learn and develop their skills in invasion games, such as soccer,
hockey, netball, basketball and ‘rippa’ rugby. The children will also participate in cross-country running
as part of a ‘fit for life’ heath-related PE unit of study.

in the year when we report to parents in writing about student achievement in relation to national
standards. There will be further conversations in week 10 this term. These are an opportunity to follow
up on previous goals set, share some current learning and set some new goals for the weeks ahead.
We hope to see all of you then.
