Integration of text presentation
1. Integration Of Text
For this section of my coursework, I have created various different titles for my magazine
‘Disturbance’ that could potentially end up on the cover of my finalized magazine cover. In order to
create these magazines, I have used Adobe Photoshop 6.0 for the majority of my design work. I will
now be analysing and evaluating a couple of them, including explaining the Photoshop features I
have used to create that particular title and why I think they are effective. I will also be getting the
opinions of others (peers) to ensure that the evaluation of these titles is as accurate and unbiased as
possible.

2. This is one of the more simple designs I did. I chose this font as it’s clear, eye-catching and bold –
which is what is typically expected of a magazine title. It took me quite some time to decide on a
font to use as this will be the underlying font that I will use consistently throughout my magazine.
In all of my design ideas so far, I have chosen to use this font as it’s the most appropriate one I
could find and I think it looks really effective and portrays the genre of the magazine well – it has a
‘rock/alternative’ vibe to it. The font used is Berlin Sans FB Demi at size 120.45pt – the size I used
is also the same on all of the potential designs as it’s large and clearly readable. The process of
creating this title was straightforward and simple – however, this is my least favourite design out of
all of mine as I think it looks slightly dull and uninteresting – more detail should be included as it’s
too simplistic. I used a font colour of black because the title of the magazine should strongly stick to
the house style of the magazine which for mine is black, red, white and occasionally grey (similar to
a variety of ‘rock’ and ‘alternative’ magazines currently on the market). The red outline was used to
indicate where the title stops and to clearly show that it’s a heading – it also makes the text stand
out. I did this outline by using FX effects and increasing the thickness. I don’t think I’ll be using
this title for my final magazine cover as it’s not as appealing as I would want it to be.
3. This title is clearly the same font style and size to the previous one but with some adaption's. I
decided to leave the text white as it’s simple and clear – I got this idea from looking at other
magazines in a similar genre as I had seen that magazines such as Kerrang often do it and it looks
very appealing. The white text also means that the black outline looks more effective and borders the
text more clearly and blatantly, making it more eye-catching than the previous title. I then took
another idea from similar genred magazines by using the line tool and making the text appear
shattered like glass, I thought it would also fit in well with the magazine name ‘Disturbance’. My aim
was to make the text look as if it had been broken and then put back together – I think I have
achieved this, which relates to the ‘rock’ genre. Individually adding all of the lines to the text was
quite a time consuming job. However, I didn’t add them in any particular order and it was entirely
random as I thought it would look more effective that way and like it had truly been smashed.
Looking at the title now, it looks as if the text is exploding off the page which I think will be
beneficial when attempting to attract the attention of readers. I decided to add a grey background as
the colour grey is also a part of the house style used, so I wanted to incorporate as much of that as I
could into the title. It could also look quite plain without a background to frame it. A background
also more clearly defines the text for the title and makes it stand out more. I think that the black,
grey and white colours work well together as they’re colours that are frequently used together and
look well.
4. The text used here is very simple – a white base for the writing with a thick black outline to make it
look appealing and attractive for viewers. For my final magazine title, I think I will be using white
for the text as its the colour that stands out the most in terms of my house style. However, the main
feature of this title is the different coloured background as it’s the most eye-catching aspect. The
background behind the section of the word that spells ‘Disturb’ is coloured in a vibrant red (the
same colour red that is included in my house style) while the remainder of the word ‘ance’ has a grey
background (the same grey that is included in my house style). I did this purely to distinguish the
use of the word ‘Disturb’ in the title as this word is typically associated with ‘rock’ magazines. The
reason I chose the word ‘Disturbance’ was because when there’s loud music playing, you could say
that there’s a disturbance in frequency or just simply a disturbance in the environment/atmosphere.
Also, the lyrics typically associated with the music in this genre can sometimes be described as
disturbing – although this obviously isn’t the case for all music in this genre. I think the use of two
colours really draws the readers attention to the title as it looks interesting from a distance and adds
some depth to the title.
5. This is the most detailed and complex title I’ve created, even though it isn’t all that complex
compared to some magazine titles. Sticking with a similar idea to the second title used in this
presentation, I have used the same writing/text style, even including the ‘smashing’ lines but I’ve
changed the background colours. The top half of the background is in the vibrant house style red
leading into a darker version of the grey house style I’ve used. Similar to the previous title, I think
the use of two colours will look appealing and interesting, catching the attention of the readers. I
was attempting to have these two colours fading into each other but I didn’t want to make the
colours lighter at any point as I think the vibrancy and boldness of the colours that they currently
are makes the title look intense and therefore suitable for the style of the magazine. For all of the
effects and creations I have made on Photoshop, none of them required me using complicated tools
– they were all straightforward and self explanatory meaning I might attempt to create some more
examples of titles using more sophisticated tools in order to ensure that I use a range of skills – this
may also lead to my title being of a higher standard.
6. Feedback
I gathered feedback from some classmates/peers in order to find out what people thought would be the best title
to use, however, I received mixed feedback and can not make a conclusive decision yet.
Name Favourite Title Comments
Ryan Tinsley Disturbance 4 You could improve the third
title by using the text on this
one, which would then be my
favourite one.
Louisa Hayward Disturbance 2 The simplicity of it is effective
but the title still contains
detailed elements.
Stephanie Allmark Disturbance 3 I like the red and the grey
background, also the
highlighting of the word
‘Disturb’.
