3. Rupi Kaur (Poet) Front/Back Cover of Rupi Kaurs Book
Font:
The font used on the front and back of the book are
exactly the same. She has used a basic, lower case
donât to display her work. From researching this, I
discovered she does this so that every letter is equal.
This helps display the themes in her book about
equality more clearly. The font used is delicate which
adds a sensitive theme to the overall book.
Imagery:
The imagery used on the front of the book is simple and
effective. It shows pictures of bees, which links into the
title: âmilk and honeyâ. The simple imagery links into the
simple use of fonts. The colour use is simple black and
white. This adds a sense of innocence as well as
mystery. These simple colours link into the whole
simple theme of the book.
Endorsements:
The books front cover includes a endorsement from New York times. In this it quotes this
poetry book is: âNumber 1 best seller.â The New York times main target audience is: 18-29
years. This tell us that this is the main target audience Rupi Kaur is trying to approach
which has been hindered by the review from New York Times.
4. Rupi Kaur (Poet milk and honey) Some Poetry Included in her books
Imagery:
The imagery used for the first poem is
drawings of woman faces. It then has
a smaller group of women under the
larger illustrations. This links into the
poem by it suggesting for us to
recognise the woman around us. The
image included is a visual
representation of this. The style of the
image is hand drawn which adds a
more personal effect to the overall
poem. The second poems
illustrations are less obvious to the
poem. She used the moon to
represent different loves in her life.
This shows she personally feels
connected to the moon. Again the
style adds a more personal touch.
This allows the audience to feel more
connected to the poet.
Font:
The font used is simple once again. This is because the main poet is wanting to
keep the letters equal. This is because she wants to imagine a world where
everything is equal. The way she has positioned her font is how she is wanting
you to read it, step by step. This is because her words will have more of a
impact on the audience. The font used is still innocent and basic which helps
add to the personal touch Rupi Kaur is tiring to achieve. The font is rather
delicate which allows me to think this poetry book is made for females.
5. Rupi Kaurs Front/Back Cover (The sun and her flowers No.1 Best seller 2018):
Imagery:
The imagery used for Rupi Kaurs book are very unique. This is
because the illustrations have a 3D effect to them. This is
because the colours that have been used have added some
amazing depth to the images. The image used clearly links into
the title of the book which adds a sense of delicacy. This also
tells us the poetry in the book are delicate and nature based.
The colours she has used are yellows and blues. Yellows
connotes happiness due to it being a vibrant colour. The blues
add a more mellow tone, making the mood more neutral and
relaxing. She has stuck with making simple illustrations which
is feel is the most effective way to present her poetry. This is
because if you make the illustrations too busy, it takes the
attention away from the poetry.
Font:
The font Rupi Kaur has used is simple but curly. This curly font represents the delicacy portrayed through out the whole poetry
book. Rupi Kaur also uses all lower case font because she wants all the words to be equal, which is a aspect I need to consider
when it comes to production. Iâve also realised in this book she has used a mix of italics and normal font. This adds a mix of
aggressive and delicate fonts, adding to the book being filled with different contrast of themes. This is also a design aspect
because I feel like you can easily tell the difference between her other book and this one. The font really exaggerates which bits
she is wanting the audience to connect to, which I feel is a different concept to her first book.
6. Inside The sun and her flowers book( No.1 Best seller 2018)
Images:
With the illustrations she has used, she has used a similar style to her first book. This shows a consistent theme as this is her own
personal style. The illustrations are still hand drawn which again adds to making this book personalised to her. She has still kept
with a nature theme to present her poetry with, which still shows that the poet is connected with nature as that is inspiring her. It
also adds a sense of delicacy because nature is precious and elegant. This is how the poet views her work, making these
illustrations relatable to her book and poetry.
Font:
The font she has used in this book varies, which I feel is a
different concept for Rupi Kaur. For example: in Rupi Kaurs
first book she used one basic font to present het poetry.
Where as, in this book she has used two different fonts to
display her work in. This adds more interest to the poems
rather than the illustrations. She has also used a different
lay out in this poetry book. Instead of using her name at the
bottom of the poem, she has written it as if nature is
speaking to the audience. This shows how she is trying to
make her self more anonymous which links back to Rupi
Kaurs early work, where she was completely anonymous.
The italics look she has gone for in this book, has added
more delicacy to the poetry. I also feel like it has highlighted
the aspects Rupi Kaur wants the audience to concentrate
on.
7. Front cover of Robert Frost Poetry (Voted Best Poetry Book)- Different Editions of the book over time.
Imagery:
The imagery used for both of these books are both images linked into
nature. This shows that even though the book has been made modern,
it has stayed consistent with the theme of nature. The font used has
also stayed consistent with the old addition. The imagery of the new
edition is simple and effective. It has been created as graphics and has
a hand drawn and painting looking aspects to it. The colour choices
used here are also effective due to how simple they are. The designs
on the front cover are also unique which adds to Robert Frosts personal
style. This helps link into the poetry. In the old edition of the book, it
looks like the front cover is a detailed drawining of mountains, trees and
nature. The theme I see consistently is the use of hand drawn
illustrations. This again is a consistent pattern I have seen whilst
researching into different poetry books. These images add the delicacy
to the poems but also portrays a sense of adventure. This is because
the colour green connotes renewal of life and energy.
Font:
The font that has been used over the two editions of the books, are very similar. This shows that even though the poetry book
has been modernised, it still portrays the same image that applies to todays society. The writing is very sharp and bold. This
shows a slight aggressive but in a delicate way. This displays a lot of contrast in the poetry book. This works effectively on the
front cover. The lay out of the font goes from displaying the famous authors name then to the title. This allows the audience to
instantly be attracted to this book, due to the author being well known.
8. Inside of Robert Frosts Poetry Book
Images:
As you can see inside Robert Frosts book, he hasnât used any
illustrations. The only image that is shown is in the content page
with the image used on the front. With this book being published in
1924, it shows that adding illustrations is a modern concept. This
shows that the poetry book is mainly there to read instead of
getting a real visual of what he is trying to portray.
Font:
As you can see the font used inside Robert Frosts book varies
depending on the page. For example: the top image he uses the same
font he uses on the front cover. This font is curly and unique, making
this bit of text important. It also has a type writing effect which is based
in the centre of the page. This is so the text is central to the image,
making them sit neatly next to each other. Where as, in the actual
poetry book, he has used a basic font to display his poetry with.
However, he has layed the poetry out in the way he wants us to
portray it as. This is an important aspect in all poetry, making it
important when creating my own illustrations.
9. Dr.Seussâs Collection ( 2nd best seller 2018)
Images:
As you can see Dr.Seuss uses bright colours to
portray his books. This is mostly because his
audience is young adults. This is one of the
reasons why he has used bright colours rather
than neutral tones. The bright colours keep the
books interesting. The illustrations used for
these books have shown a consistent and
unique pattern. The patterns again look hand
drawn making the book more personalised.
This makes the reader feel like they have a
close connection to the author or in this case
the main character. From looking a different
poetry books, a lot of them have used hand
drawn effects which is a aspect I will need to
explore when it comes to production. The
colours he has used correspond together
nicely. This is because it makes the main
aspects stand out on the background. For
example: the reds stand out on the yellow
background from the 3rd image.
Font:
As you can see Dr.Seuss has used different fonts depending on the
book he is trying to illustrate. On the front cover of the box, he has used
basic fonts. This is because these books are aimed at children so
making them complicated wouldnât appeal to his audience. He has also
used swirly writing, so that it displays the books as fun and adventurous.
He has included similar fonts on the front covers of the books inside the
collection. I feel like Dr. Seuss has really concentrated on making his
visual amazing so that it encourages children to read them.
10. Inside Dr. Seussâs Collection (2nd Best seller 2018)
Imagery:
As you can see, Dr. Seuss has mainly concentrated on his illustrations
inside his book. He has used a variety of bright colours which is
consistent with his theme across all of his books. The words have been
engulfed by the illustrations, making them be the main aspect of the
books. Dr. Seuss has a unique style with his books which is shown
through out. A lot of the illustrations look hand drawn which adds a more
personalised aspect to the books. I also feel like even though these
books appeal to children, the illustrations have to tailored to suit an adult
too. This is because the illustrations are rather mature and detailed.
Font:
As you can see the font used is basic and small. This Is because it has
been engulfed by the illustrations. The font has been placed as if the
book was a game too, which makes the audience feel like theyâre going
on a adventure with the characters in the book. The have done this by
panicking the audience as if there is a time limit. For example: in the
second image there is basic font at the bottom which is important
information. However, the information in the illustrations are large and
seem like rushed bold letters. This adds a sense of intensity but makes
the book more fun and interesting to follow.
11. Other Peoples illustrations to Poetry
Imagery:
The imagery used in these poetry pages all
contain very similar styles. For example: the
two pictures to your left both contain a hand
drawn type design. I feel like this helps add
delicacy to the overall poem which helps
display what the creator was feeling and
thinking. However, they have both used dark
and heavy colour. This heavy colour shows
that they want you to clearly to see the
contrast between the font and image. The
heavy colour represents how they feel about
the poetry. With both the poems linking to fear
and hope. It shows a good contrast between
the good and the bad. Theyâve also used
simple imagery to illustrate the poetry.Font:
The font used here is a basic book font. However, they have layed
it out as if it was a book and highlighted key words which make a
nice quote/poem. They have also used spaces between words, this
makes the audience have to construct what it says by forming the
word. This also adds space to the overall poem, which allows the
audience to see the makers opinion more clearly.
12. Rupi Kaur Information On Poetry
Poetry Sales Figures 2018:
In total, 1.3m volumes of poetry were sold in 2018, adding up to ÂŁ12.3m in sales, a rise of ÂŁ1.3m on
2017. Rupi Kaur, a 26-year-old Canadian poet with 3.4 million followers on Instagram, leads the
bestsellers list and was responsible for almost ÂŁ1m of sales. Rupi Kaur is a popular poet for millennials.
She has found a way of making the poetry reliable to this audience which has allowed her to grow big.
A few of the best selling books for poetry in 2018 were:
- On a quiet night by Till Lindemann
- She is Fierce â by Ana Sampson
- The way I use to be- Amber Smith
A lot of the best selling poetry books for 2018 are very female empowerment themed. This is because
there has been an increase of feminists coming together and fighting for woman's rights. For example:
there were a lot of celebrity's which spoke up about sexual assault and have been taking action. The first
occurrence of this was an Olympic athlete Aly Raisman had taken action against her former doctor who
was prosecuted. This theme has come up a lot in poetry over this year because there has been a big focus
on this recently. However, some of the best selling poets each and every years tend to be big names such
as: Dr Seuss. Dr. Seuss has been voted number 2 on amazon for his book on mythology. Rupi Kaur
Poetry book is ahead at being number one for her book: The sun and her flowers.
13. Other Publishers Poetry Book (Theme Related)
This poetry book is one of the books which peaked in
popularity in 2018. This poetry book is called âShe is Fierceâ
and is by an poet called Ana Sampson.
As you can see from the from the front covers, she has used
bold and royal colours to help portray her book and superior
and powerful. The red is a dominant colour which
immediately attracts your attention to the book. Red
represents love and danger. This is why it portrays a
dominate and âfierceâ effect to the colour use. The use of the
gold font adds a royal and wealthy effect to the overall poetry
book. Gold also represents prosperity and glamour. With this
book being a female empowering book, it clearly displays this
theme before you even buy the book.
From researching into the target audience for this book, it
came up with the audience being rather varied.
The book is dominantly bought by females. The common age for this book is females ages 21years and above.
However, there is an increased number of millennials who have taken an interest to poetry. This trend has come from
Rupi Kaur because she was large on social media for her poetry. This has triggered everyone's interest in poetry. As
you can see the lay out inside the book is different to Rupi Kaurs due to having no illustrations. However, the lay out is
the classic lay out for poetry. I feel like what makes Rupi Kaur unique is the illustrations but the themes included in both
of these poetry books makes a strong appeal to the millennial target audience for females.
14. Summary
From researching into existing products and Context research, I began to understand what styles most illustrations for poetry contain, and
where designers got there inspiration from. From researching into Rupi Kaur, I found she designs her font all in lower case because she wants
all the letters to be equal. This is a concept I will have to consider when experimenting with typography. This is because I want to stick to
Rupiâs tradition. However, I will incorporate David Carsons interesting positioning and font style to achieve a qwerky and unique style of work.
Iâve also learnt that Rupi Kaur uses Instagram to advertise her work. This mean I have to consider creating illustrations that would be suitable
for this target audience. From researching into David Carson his inspiration came from his degree in sociology. He was fascinated with turning
the normal into something out of the ordinary. He likes to go against the classic conventions of what is right and wrong. This is why I am
wanting to follow his typography because it will add a unique style to my work. This will also help express my interpretation of Rupi Kaurs work
too, which will make the project more personal. I researched into Salavdor Daliâs work because i feel like his interpretation on different issues
in his time were fascinated. He took a normal situation and made it twisted which is what i am wanting to achieve with the style of work i am
wanting to illustrate. I also researched into different illustrations for poems, which i discovered the style is more hand written and delicate. This
is a continuous pattern i have discovered which means i should follow this with my work. This is why it links into my target audience more.
However, i am wanting to push this convention and make my work more unique to me. This means including different styles. This is because i
am wanting to experiment more and push my limits rather then limit myself to doing the same, basic illustrations. Iâve also found out from
researching into poetry books that a lot of the trends from 2018 have come from a theme of woman empowerment. This shows this is a theme
that I need to concentrate on when it comes to production. This is because it is appeals the target audience I am wanting to appeal to. This will
allow my final project to be up and current with events that are relevant to everyone's lives. Iâve also looked into the second best selling book
of 2018 which is Dr. Seuss. His books are mainly aimed at children but he has gone into great detail to make the illustrations on his book
amazing. He has used bright colours and has made the book more adventure like so that the audience can really get stuck into the book. I feel
like I need to add aspects of this to my illustration because I want to make the audience interact with the illustrations. This is because I want to
make the poetry fun for them to look at. This will allow my work to be more interesting and will develop my own individual style so that the
audience doesnât become bored through out my poetry book.
16. How did Rupi Kaur become well known?(Instagram)
Rupi Kaur used to post anonymously on Instagram and Tumblr which
allowed her poetry to have a following. This shows the audience she
attracts mainly use these two forms of social media. The clichĂŠ audience
for these two platforms are millennials. As you can see from the statistics,
woman are the main users for Instagram. This reflects that Rupis work
appeals to this audience more. This links into her themes of her poetry
being heavily targeted towards feminism and woman empowerment.
Her following become well known after she posted a photo online of
menstruation blood on her clothes. This was then reported as it âviolatedâ
Instagram's terms and conditions. This then exploded as the BBC, NBC
and buzz feed began to follow the story as they were outraged by the fact
the images were taken down as a âviolationâ.
As you can see from the photo to your left, this is the photo she posted on
Instagram about menstruating. As you can see she gained over 100,000
likes on this post alone. This is because in todays society we shouldn'tât
be ashamed of menstruating as itâs a normal and natural part of life. This
is the message Rupi wanted to make clear.
For my production of her work, I need to make sure my illustrations can be
posted on Instagram. This is because she continuously posts her poetry
with illustrations on Instagram because it markets to her target audience.
This helps keep her work current as the main audience for Instagram is
millennials.
17. Instagram/Tumblr Facts and Figures
â˘Below shows the ages of instagram users
split in to how many people use this platform.
This is the age-demographic:
â˘Ages 13â17: 57 million (7%)
â˘Ages 18â24: 270 million (32%)
â˘Ages 25â34: 270 million (32%)
â˘Ages 35â44: 131 million (15%)
â˘Ages 45â54: 68 million (8%)
â˘Ages 55â64: 30 million (3%)
â˘Ages 65+: 18.3 million (2%)
-Tumblr is most popular with the 18-to-29 year old age bracket.
About 13% of this demographic have used the site. 66% of all
visitors are under the age of 35, while 39% are under 25 years-
old. About 36% of users are parents.
-As of January 2014, there have been 163.9 million blogs and 72
billion posts on Tumblr.
-31% of all visitors are located in the U.S, which totals roughly
41,250,000 users.
Here are some facts and figures about the two social media profiles which helped make Rupi Kaur famous. Both
social media groups have a high interest rate for people aged between 18-29 years old. This shows these
platforms are good for millennials and shows that these two platforms would be best to present my poetry work on.
A lot of the users are American. This explains how Rupi Kaur gathered her followers because she is also
American. She also read her poetry out around the USA before she fully became famous which I feel like has
made her career more successful. However, from researching both of the social media platforms it has been
concluded that on average females use Instagram more. However, the age group 18-29 more males use
Instagram. This shows that Rupi Kaurs work stretch's to more than millennials. However, on average Instagram
targets millennials which means my work will need to appeal to this audience if I am wanting to publish this online.
18. The New York Times Target Audience Research
The New York Times has been displayed on
the front of Rupi Kaurs book which helps
reflect what target audience she is wanting to
aim towards. As you can see this newspaper
is most popular with Millennials who are
female. This links clearly into Rupi Kaurs
poetry because she shows consistent themes
of feminism and women empowerment in
them.
This clear links shows that I am needing to
target my fanzine/book towards this audience.
This is because I am interpreting Rupi Kaurs
work which shows her following are younger.
This also makes sense because she first
become famous for her poetry from Instagram
and Tumblr. This shows I need to use more
delicate fonts and illustration to achieve the
best results for Rupi Kaurs target audience.
19. Interview 1) Hannah-17years old Female
1) Do you know who Rupi Kaur is? If so how did you hear of her? I
heard of Rupi Kaur from my sister, she believes in equal rights and this is what Rupi Kaur writes about. I also
saw it all on Instagram on the discover page. For Christmas a few years ago I asked for her âMilk and Honeyâ
book.
2) What do you like about Rupi Kaur's Work? Why? I
think the thing which I like most about her work is the illustrations, all the illustrations are detailed and it seems
that they match the text. I think everyone can relate to at least one of the poems in that book and that is why I
like it. Everyone has a different story but it seems as though Rupi Kaur can relate to everyone and appeal to
anyone.
3) What would you improve about Rupi Kaur's illustration work? Why?
I donât think I could improve her work, she has a niche which cant be improved.
4) What conventions of graphics would you expect a poetry book to contain? Why?
From growing up I read quite a lot of poetry books so I would expect to have some type of illustration to go with
them so it adds more detail into the poetry book.
5) What appeals you to poetry? I
think the emotions in a poem speaks to you, it can relate to you and thatâs why I like poetry.
20. Interview 2) Simran- 18 Years Female
1) Do you know who Rupi Kaur is? If so how did you hear of her? Yes, from
Instagram.
2) What do you like about Rupi Kaurs Work? Why? Her
work is thoughtful and the designs are relatable. I like the lack of colour because its chill.
3) What would you improve about Rupi Kaurs illustration work? Why? I like
simplicity and wouldn't change anything.
4) What conventions of graphics would you expect a poetry book to contain? Why? The
Illustrations that are relevant to the poem. For example: the themes needs to connect.
5) What appeals you to poetry? i
like the depth of emotion in each poem. This is because its personal.
21. Interview 3) Gordon-Male age range 20-30.
1) Do you know who Rupi Kaur is? If so how did you hear of her? I do
know of Rupi Kaur. I first read her work two years ago when a female friend introduced her book âmilk and honeyâ to
me
2) What do you like about Rupi Kaurs Work? Why? I
like the way in which her work is often quite honest and in some cases graphic. She isnât afraid to challenge stereo
types and uses issues of race, abuse, love and self care to highlight modern concerns facing men and women alike.
3) What would you improve about Rupi Kaurs illustration work? Why? Id only
want to see more of it
4) What conventions of graphics would you expect a poetry book to contain? Why? In
conventional circumstances id expect a cover to the book that in some way related to the work inside, showing, from
a marketing point of view, what I might expect to find within the pages. Anything inside the pages would only be
specific to the artist/poet and therefore I wouldnât expect anything.
5) What appeals you to poetry? Poetry
like every other art form that appeals to me should allow me to be transported in some way to another place.
Whether it is understanding what the artist went through and how they have represented this or whether it awakes
feelings within me with regards to the content of the work or whether it allows me to understand some other emotion
that some 3rd party might have experienced, all of which done just by using language.
22. Summary Of Interviews/Audience Research
From researching into audience and by conducting interviews, i have discovered that Rupi Kaurs work is known by all age groups. However, there
is one target audience which stands out more. This is females of millennial ages which is the audience I am wanting to target. This is why I
interviewed females that are millennials. I also thought it would be interesting to interview a male because I wanted to see if her poetry effects them
the same way as it does females. This was true because he knew about the poet, However, statistically women are the main audience that is
attracted to Rupi Kaurs poetry. This is because after researching into instagram, i have concluded that the main audience for this is millennial who
are female. This is vital with my research because Rupi Kaur advertises her work on there a lot. Another aspect which backs my target audience
research, is my research into the New York Times. This was advertised on the front of Rupi Kaurs book which shows this is relevant for the
audience. From researching into this, i discovered that millennials and females are the main users of this newspaper. This again adds to the
audience being mainly female dominated. This means i need to make sure the font, colours and style i use relate to this audience when it comes to
production. From the interviews everyone said they liked the simplicity of her illustrations for her poetry. They said this adds a nice simple visual on
what she is wanting to portray. This shows i will need to include simple illustrations through out my production work. This is so it appeals to Rupi
Kaurs audience. However, i will be experimenting with the graphics so that i can express my own creativity more but also help portray Rupiâs style
too. This will add a nice twist on the overall book.
I need to make sure the style i go with is delicate and expressive. This will appeal to my target audience as being female and millennials.
From conducting interviews it has taught me that Rupi Kaur has mainly been discovered from instagram which shows that this will be the best way
of getting my own production out there. This is because its clear that Rupi Kaur is more of a social media presents, which I have found out through
out my research and interviews. Another aspect I learnt from my interviews was that they all liked the simplicity of her illustrations and her poetry
themes. This shows that the themes are relatable to a wide range of people. It has also shown me, that my audience prefer simple and not over
complicated drawings. This means when it comes to producing my work, I wont over power the reader by making the illustrations too bold. I will
make sure the illustrations and the text correspond together nicely.
Overall, from my research and interviews I have discovered that I need to keep my illustrations neutral and simple. This is so it doesnât over power
the poetry. This is because in my interviews it has taught me that the themes are one of the main reasons of attraction to Rupi Kaurs poetry. This
shows me that the font is going to play a huge role in my production so that it can appeal to my target audience. I have also been taught that social
media will be the best way to present my work because it will reach a wider range of my audience.
24. Tutorial Typography
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8H-dFkbd58
In this youtube tutorial it shows you how to fit font to a
picture. I thought i would explore the possibility of doing this
because i feel as if it will be relevant for my work. For
example: David Carson was big on his typography which
has inspired me to look further into this aspect. This would
be a great way to ease me into typography for this project.
By using this tutorial it allows me to explore this section of
research in depth. This will help my production more
effective as this is a section i am wanting to experiment with
in my poetry.
This is because it is interesting and i feel like it will help
portray a certain style in more depth. I also feel like by using
this software I can come to terms with how to use illustrator
properly. This will allow my work to be more effective in the
long run as it is easier to use then photoshop. From
watching the tutorial and experimenting with this, I have
found it difficult to do. This is because the photo template I
was using was difficult to fit font around and in the image.
This have made it difficult to work with which means I have
decided not to use this technique in production.
25. Tutorial
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj_iwNgv8aQ&t=531s
In this Youtube tutorial, it explores how to create a font on
top of a portrait image. I thought this would be a interesting
concept to cover as it would look good on the front of my
book/fanzine for Rupi Kaur. This creates a more surreal and
serious effect to the overall book. It also gives the book a
more realistic and bibliography effect to the book. This will
make it easier to identify whos work is inside the
book/fanzine.
I have tried to experiment with this tutorial which has lead
for a successful outcome.
As you can see to your left this is the experiment I conducted on the tutorial. I did find a few
aspects of this tutorial hard. For example: I had to select a image which was a central
portrait. From this I had to cut the background out. This was difficult as it became clear the
image was cut out of a background from the hair line. From this I had to darken some of the
image by using the burn tool. This allowed the image to blend with the black background
more. From this I experimented with both photo editing and typography. These are two
aspects that David Carson explored which is where my inspiration has come from. I feel like
including this technique into my FMP will be successful. This is because it will appeal to my
target audience and will keep the whole book containing different styles which is what I am
wanting to achieve.
26. Tutorial
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCgnz1Q8JTg
In this Youtube tutorial it discusses how to use a graphics
tablet effectively. I am wanting to explore a graphics tablet
due to wanting to do hand drawn style illustrations in my
FMP project. I feel like this tutorial gives you useful tips on
how to use this effectively which will help make my
production be more successful. From this I have learnt
how to draw simple drawings. However, I feel like I need to
improve my skills further so that the drawings are more
prestige.
Iâve learnt from this tutorial how to change the brush
strokes to get different effects. This has allowed me to
discover how to create depth to certain drawings. I have
also included using colours to add some depth to the
drawings. This has allowed my work to become more
successful.
This tutorial is important for my final major project because
I will be using the graphics tablets a lot. This is so I stick
with making the classic Rupi Kaur style illustrations for my
work.
27. Production Summary
From watching various tutorials about different production techniques, I have learnt which skills will play an
important part in my project and which ones wonât. For example: the graphics tablet tutorial will be useful when it
comes to production. This is because I am wanting to do some hand drawn illustrations. I have gathered this
inspirations from Rupi Kaurs poetry book. This is because she contains simple illustrations which are hand drawn.
I am wanting to portray her style as well as my own in this illustration book. This is because it will allow me to
expand my knowledge and will allow me to have freedom with making the finished product artsy and creative.
This is because it will help me discover my own individual style as well as incorporating Rupi Kaurs style.
The second tutorial which will be helpful with my final project is the text portrait one. This is because it will teach
me how to incorporate pictures and text. This skill can also be implied with graphic illustrations which is why I am
wanting to learn this skill. It will allow me to explore a different style which will add a more surreal effect to it. For
example: using photos of Rupi Kaur will allow me explore different styles and will allow the audience to easily
identify that she is the woman who wrote the poetry. From this tutorial i will gain valuable skills on how to do
different typography skills. This will allow me to use these skills and techniques in future pieces of work. This is
because it is a different style with what i am use to working with.
The First tutorial was rather hard to follow. This is because i am not use to using the software illustrator. However,
i created a similar style to this one with Photoshop. This has allowed me to combined the tutorial style and my
own style together. Overall, i feel like all these tutorials have come in handy. This is because i have gained
valuable skills on how to achieve different styles using font and graphics tablet.
