Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I like how simplistic the design can be on the panda yet still show what
it is clearly, even though there is only a few different colours and
shapes used. For the second image I like how the textures represent
where the animal would be, except those texture were added to the
white portions of the whale and helps make the image look a lot
different from the original but still keeps the look and main elements
of the whale.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I was to do it again I would improve by adding more gradients to the
pandas arms so that that look more 3D and definition to the dark
sections of the body. Also to improve on the whale image I would like
to increase the opacity of the black sections of the whale so that the
texture is only added to the background and the whale sections.

Evaluation
I liked the shadows around her face and jaw as they help to
make the face look more lifelike and 3D. Also with this image I
like the shape of the placement of where the hair falls on her
jumper.
To improve if I did this again I would add to the shadows and
highlights on the hair, hat, and jumper so that they stand out
more look more like her face, so if the shadowing was on her
jumper it would make it look less flat and make the bag stand
out so that it looked less like a stripe across the jumper.

Evaluation
For this image I liked the dark shadows around his facial features and
the black and white colour scheme of the image and text. Also in this
image I like the minimal amount of colour just on the name rather
than a very brightly coloured image.
To improve this if I were to do it again I would have liked to add more
things that relate to the film while still keeping it quite minimal.
Another way that I could improve this image is by changed the colour,
font or size of the words so that they stand out and are more of a main
focus of the image. Also if I was to add more to the image I could have
the text in a matching colour of the things relating to actual film and
what happens relating to this quote.

Evaluation
In the first image I like the perspective effect to help make the
text look more 3D and interesting, as well as this I like the
coloured borders around the words to help make them stand
out from the page. Also I like the second type of text I used
where the background of the text as a city landscape and I
think this would look effective if it was used in the right way.
If I was to do this again I would've added in different images to
text like the one which is filled in by the city, so I would've
tried out using different images and what works best, or a
different image on each word. As well as this to improve I
would experiment with different colours of block text.

Evaluation
For the first image I like the simplicity of it and how when adding the threshold
the red tie was removed and I like this better as it adds to the simplicity with
minimal colour and the black of his hair and shirt standing out the most. With the
second image I like the sharp edges of the cut out around his head as I think it
makes the image look more interesting and have more of a comic book style. Also
in the second image I like the black and white colour scheme on his face but still
having the colour come through on the background with the stripes of red and
grey, and I think that the black line around his head helps to make him stand out
from the background and show a border between him and the background. As
well as this I like how the main colours are just blacks and whites with just the one
colour of red as it helps to add interest to the image rather than it just being all
black and white and simplistic.
If I was to do this again I would like to improve by adding some more bright
colours on the first layer so when the overlay of black and white goes on top the
image looks brighter and more interesting with lots of colours but keeping the
dark shadows and feature of the image. Also to improve if I was to do this again I
would've liked to have added more of the cut out borders, however had them in
different colours and shapes around his head so that it creates a nice layered
effect around him, while still keeping him as the main focus point in the image.

Evaluation
I like the comic book effect on all of the images as it helps to create a running theme
through the set of images so they all fit together. Also I liked the edited key in the 4th
image as it has the same filter as the rest of the image. Another thing I liked about the
image is the simplicity of the images as the colour scheme is all the same and makes
the final image look more simplistic. Also with this image I like the darkness on the
bottom of the last image with the door looking gradually darker from bottom to top.
If I was to do this again I would like to add some more comic book colours which are
brighter, also if I was to do this again I would've liked to have added a more comic
book layout to the images with equal borders or given different shapes to the images
so they give a more comic book look. Another thing I would like to improve if I was to
do this again is I would like to have added a different ending and edited in an
alternative ending when the door opens in the final image. To improve this again I
would like to have filled in the the two large white spaces next to the image of the lock
and key so that the overall image was more full and filled in, I could've improved this
by cropping the image differently so it filled more of the space at the bottom of the
image.

Evaluation
I like the look of the illustrations as it allows you to create exactly what you need
as you can draw it and achieve the look you aimed for, also it allows you to add as
much or as little detail as you want. With the illustration I did I think the eyes look
the best as they have the darkest colour and therefore stands out the most from
the background and looks the most effective.
If I was to do the illustration again I would add smaller details to see how well
they would show up when scanned and see how well you could use them in
Photoshop. Another thing that I would do is I would darken the rest of the
drawing up to make sure that all the small details stand out when its scanned for
example the small lines on the wings of the owl could be darker to make sure that
they stand out, I would also do this to the lines in the middle of the owl so they
were as dark as the eyes and look as clear as they could.

Evaluation
For the narrative environment image I created I like the leaves on the palm tree with
the two different shades of green as I think it adds to the detail on the tree. As well as
this I like the main trunk of the tree and the details on it, as I think the use of the
different colours helps to accurately show what it is and add levels to the image.
If I were to do it again I would have liked too added the same amount off detail to the
water, sky and sand so that they matched more as they water could've done with
some more colours incorporated into it to give it the same look that the tree has, I
could also do the same to the sky and change the clouds that I have put there into
clouds made by the polygon lasso tool instead of just warping a shape and decreasing
the opacity to create a cloud like look, as I think it would fit better with the overall
look of the image. As well as I think I could also improve the shadow of the tree on the
water as the shape isn't very accurate and the colour of the shadow should be slightly
different so that the shadow fits the actual tree and the colours don’t blend into the
sea.

Story Overview
My story is based on Jack and the beanstalk, however is set in the jungle and the characters are played by
animals. Also instead of the seeds for the beanstalk being sold to Jack in place of the cow, I my story Jack (a
monkey) exchanges the bananas he has for some seeds from a snake. Once Jack has planted the seeds the tree
grows rapidly into a palm tree which is larger than the rest in the surrounding jungle. As Jack is curious about
the tree he tells his family he's going to climb it to see what is at the top of the tree, so Jack climbs the tree to
reach the top where he finds a castle in which a giant (a bear), Jack steals the seeds from outside the castle and
goes back to his family and grows the seeds, which turn out to be a banana plant, the bear comes in search of
Jack angrily and searches for him, the bear then tries one of the bananas that Jack has grown so the bear and
the monkeys learn to share the food. So Jack has to go and take the bananas up to the bear so that they can
share as they grew better when Jack grew them on the ground.

Advantages: The image quality of PDF files are good, and they can be easily made as
well as this they can compress large file sizes.
Disadvantages: PDF files are difficult to edit once saved, there are also different types
of PDF.

Audience
I don’t think that my children's book would be aimed at any specific gender as it is
suitable for everyone, also the ages of the audience of this book would be fairly
young but old enough to read with guidance so that they can understand what’s
happening and old enough to understand that the moral is about sharing so that
they can learn the ideas of sharing so around 1-6. As well as this the colours in the
book will be bright so that all ages will be interested in the look of the book.
Production Methods
To produce the actual characters I will rotoscope them to achieve a more detailed look to the
animals. For the environments I will use the comic book effect so that I can keep the detail
from original photos, but make them fit more with the look of the book I will use a lighter
threshold so the images don’t come out too dark and I can keep the backgrounds looking fairly
bright and colourful. Also for the objects in the illustrations, like the seeds and bananas I will
rotoscope so they look the same as the characters and fit the theme of the book. Another
thing I will do when producing is aim to have quite simple illustrations, but use bright colours
so that all the pages stand out from the text.

Good idea for the story, a lot is happening which is
relating back to the original story.
Its good that it doesn't’ aim for a specific gender as
this will give you a wider circulation

I like that the characters are animals as, this is what
intrigues children to read these kind of books.

Interesting twist on an original story
It is a good idea to attempt this classic story in a
new setting
You clearly have thought out how you are going to
create the pages art style, it sounds like a long
process, will you be able to keep this consistent
throughout
further developed?
There is strong moral to your story. The mood board you have made is good for the
purpose that it gives me an idea of how the tone
and colour will look although it would be even better
if you could make one for each element of the
book. For example one for the bear, one for the
monkey etc..

My feedback is overall mainly positive and includes a lot of helpful things to improve on,
like including why I have chosen specific animals to play certain roles so I will improve
this to help develop my ideas.
Which parts of your feedback do you agree with and why?
I do agree that I should specify why I chose the animals I did and why I would like the
book to be square as these things would help me to develop the work and go into more
detail about why I would want these features of the book to be like that so it gives a
better idea behind what I was thinking would look best in the book. Also I agree that I
could’ve made different mood boards on specific characters to show how they will look
in my illustrations.
Which parts of your feedback do you disagree with and why?
I don’t think that I should’ve created more mood boards for different items in the book
as I think it would've over complicated the simplicity that I wanted with the main
characters as well as this there are a lot smaller details on some pages that if I were to
make mood boards for everything wouldn't’t be worth it as there isn't too much that
can go into the small details in some of the pages.

Once upon a time there lived a poor widow and her son Jack. One day, Jack’s mother told him to sell their only cow. Jack went to the
market and on the way he met a man who wanted to buy his cow. Jack asked, “What will you give me in return for my cow?” The
man answered, “I will give you five magic beans!” Jack took the magic beans and gave the man the cow. But when he reached home,
Jack’s mother was very angry. She said, “You fool! He took away your cow and gave you some beans!” She threw the beans out of
the window. Jack was very sad and went to sleep without dinner.
The next day, when Jack woke up in the morning and looked out of the window, he saw that a huge beanstalk had grown from his
magic beans! He climbed up the beanstalk and reached a kingdom in the sky. There lived a giant and his wife. Jack went inside the
house and found the giant’s wife in the kitchen. Jack said, “Could you please give me something to eat? I am so hungry!” The kind
wife gave him bread and some milk.
While he was eating, the giant came home. The giant was very big and looked very fearsome. Jack was terrified and went and hid
inside. The giant cried, “Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman. Be he alive, or be he dead, I’ll grind his bones to make my
bread!” The wife said, “There is no boy in here!” So, the giant ate his food and then went to his room. He took out his sacks of gold
coins, counted them and kept them aside. Then he went to sleep. In the night, Jack crept out of his hiding place, took one sack of
gold coins and climbed down the beanstalk. At home, he gave the coins to his mother. His mother was very happy and they lived
well for sometime.
Jack climbed the beanstalk and went to the giant’s house again. Once again, Jack asked the giant’s wife for food, but while he was
eating the giant returned. Jack leapt up in fright and went and hid under the bed. The giant cried, “Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of
an Englishman. Be he alive, or be he dead, I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!” The wife said, “There is no boy in here!” The giant
ate his food and went to his room. There, he took out a hen. He shouted, “Lay!” and the hen laid a golden egg. When the giant fell
asleep, Jack took the hen and climbed down the beanstalk. Jack’s mother was very happy with him.
After some days, Jack once again climbed the beanstalk and went to the giant’s castle. For the third time, Jack met the giant’s wife
and asked for some food. Once again, the giant’s wife gave him bread and milk. But while Jack was eating, the giant came home.
“Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman. Be he alive, or be he dead, I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!” cried the giant.
“Don’t be silly! There is no boy in here!” said his wife.
The giant had a magical harp that could play beautiful songs. While the giant slept, Jack took the harp and was about to leave.
Suddenly, the magic harp cried, “Help master! A boy is stealing me!” The giant woke up and saw Jack with the harp. Furious, he ran
after Jack. But Jack was too fast for him. He ran down the beanstalk and reached home. The giant followed him down. Jack quickly
ran inside his house and fetched an axe. He began to chop the beanstalk. The giant fell and died.
Jack and his mother were now very rich and they lived happily ever after.

Story Breakdown
Jack’s mother tells Jack to go and sell their only cow at the market.
When Jacks on his way to market, he meets a man who he asks ‘What will you give me in return for my cow?’ and the man says ‘I
will give you five magic beans!’ Jack accepts this offer and goes home to his mother with the beans.
Jacks mother is very angry that he wasted the cow for some beans, so she says ‘You fool! He took away your cow and gave you
some beans!’ and threw the beans out of the window.
The next day when Jack woke up he looked out of the window and saw the beans had grown magically into a giant beanstalk. Jack
climbed up the beanstalk and when he got to the top he reached a kingdom in the sky, where he discovered that a giant and his wife
lived. Jack asked the giants wife ‘Could you please give me something to eat? I am so hungry!’ so, the giants wife did so and offered
Jack the food.
Whilst Jack was eating the food, the giant arrived home looking very big and fearsome. Jack was terrified so went and hid inside.
The giant smells Jack in the air, but his wife persuades him that there is no boy there so the giant eats his food and goes to his room
where he gets out bags of gold coins, counts them and then sets them aside and went to sleep. Whilst the giant was asleep Jack
came out of hiding and took one sack of gold down the beanstalk and back to his mother where his mother was very happy with him.
A few days later Jack climbed the beanstalk, and once again asked the giants wife for some food, but the giant returned whilst Jack
was eating so he leapt up and went and hid under the bed. Once again the giant said he could smell the blood of an Englishman but
his wife said there was no one there again. So the giant ate his food and went to bed, where he took out a hen which would lay gold
eggs on his demand, once the giant had gone to sleep Jack took the hen and climbed down the beanstalk back too his mother
where she was once again very happy with him.
A little while later Jack climbed the beanstalk again and went up to the giants castle and asked the giants wife for some food, which
for the third time she had given him some milk and bread. The giant came home while Jack was eating again and thought he could
smell the boy again but the wife said ‘Don’t be silly! There is no boy here!’. The giant had a magical harp which could play him
beautiful songs, so whilst the giant slept Jack took the harp and was about to leave when the magic harp cried ‘Help master! A boy is

the clouds and a large castle. When Jack gets to the castle he discovers that a family of bears live there, he asks the bears wife for some food
because he is really hungry*, the wife offers Jack the food.
While Jacks eats his food, the bear arrives home looking very angry so Jack runs and hides. The bear could smell Jack, but his wife denies that
there is anyone there*, once the giant has eaten his meal he goes to bed where he takes out two large bags of gold, counts them and sets them
aside. While the bears are asleep, Jack takes the gold and runs down the beanstalk to take the gold to his mother where she is very pleased with
him.
A couple of days later Jack climbed the beanstalk again and the bears wife greets Jack with some food, but the bear returned whilst Jack was
eating again, so Jack lept up and went to hide under the bed so the bear wouldn’t find him. Once again the bear said he could smell Jack, but his
wife persuades him there's no one there but her*. So the giant ate his food and went to bed, where he took out a bunch of golden bananas, so
whilst the giant bear was asleep Jack took the bananas and took them down the beanstalk to his mother.
A few days later Jack went back up the beanstalk to the castle again, and the bears wife greeted Jack with some food and water, once again the
bear comes home whilst Jack is eating but Jack quickly runs to hide. Once the bear had eaten and gone to bed, he took some golden seeds out of

grew golden bananas. The next thing Jack noticed was that the bear was eating one of the golden bananas peacefully next him.
Jack and the bear agreed for Jack to help grow the golden bananas on the ground if they shared the produce among both of their families*. So
both Jack and his mother, and the bear and his wife lived a very rich life.
