  • 3. Trends in population Energy demand Energy use Source : House of Commons and BP energy report OECD : Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (12+14 countries) The tonne of oil equivalent ( toe ) is a unit of energy : the amount of energy released by burning one tonne of crude oil, approximately 42 GJ

    • Camfil Farr Low Energy Air Filters save Money, Energy and Carbon
But also deliver Sustainable Air Quality
  • 5. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Energy has risen in price by 118% from 2006 to 2011 (Mike Malina - Energy Solutions) That is an average rise of about 16% per year over 5 years during a world recession. Will Energy prices rise more over the next 5 years?
  • 6. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Guys Campus Land Securities manual monitoring confirms pressure drop reductions when upgrading to Low Energy Air Filters. Kings College – Guys site confirms reduction of pressure drop gives energy use reduction with drop in Fan kW.
  • 7. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Life Cycle Costing analysis
  • 8. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05
  • 9. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Monitoring by manual readings give pressure drop reductions
  • 10. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Comparison of pressure drop readings confirm reduction for Low Energy Air Filters
  • 11. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Existing filters were measured for pressure drop 01) Ahu1 has synthetic filters
  • 12. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Low Energy Air filters were measured for pressure drop 07) Enhanced pocket area give lower pressure drop
  • 13. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Sustainable Air Quality with less energy Low Energy Air Filter – consistent media performance delivers sustained cleaner air with over 4 X reduction in fine dust particulates
  • 14. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Land Securities own and manage 29 million ft2 of Commercial property. Camfil were asked by Neil Pennell Engineering Director of Land Securities to evaluate the cost saving and energy saving benefits of installing Low Energy Air Filters.
  • 15. The Mobile Energy monitoring unit provides a comprehensive monitoring system that enables energy usage to be compared to AHU volume flow and pressure drop Easy to position on most AHU’s Independent power source New Approach for Guys – The MEMU
  • 16. Air Handling Unit energy flow © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Pre-filter Secondary-filter Intake Air Frost coil Supply Air Damper Heating coil Cooling coil FAN MOTOR Gas-filter (Carbon) Attenuator OUTSIDE INSIDE FAN Electrical Energy input via motor
  • 17. Energy consumed by air filters The cost of ventilation
    • The energy requirement for ventilation is expensive.
    • Filters account for approx. 30% of the total energy cost of the system. (C.I.B.S.E. data)
    • Filters are the most inexpensive part of the system to improve .
    • Without Capital Expenditure
© CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Clean air with economic benefits 30% of total system pressure loss 40% 20% 4% Pascal
  • 18. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 MEMU wireless AHU filter monitoring Reduction in filter pressure gives reduction in Fan kWh Kings College remote monitoring chart with energy reduction Typical chart showing how the KWh reduce when the filter pressure drop reduces after a filter change.
  • 19. © CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Guys Campus The case studies show that Low Energy Air Filters save energy and clean air with greater efficiency. The program of remote monitoring is currently on five sites with ten more planned. Opportunity assessment surveys for energy reduction are taking place on a daily basis.
  • 20. How we optimise our Low Energy Air Filter selection
    • A Hi-flo F7 M7 Bag filter with 9.2 M2 of micro-fibre media has the optimum low pressure drop and consistent high particulate efficiency with a longer working life
    BS:EN13779:2007 advises F7 minimum efficiency
  • 21. Life cycle costing & air system factors Energy is part of the LCC model
    • The life cycle cost for the filter is the cost of the:
    • Filters
    • Labour
    • Energy consumption
    • Cleaning of ventilation system
    • Disposal of used filter
    • = LCC
© CAMFIL FARR 11-07-05 Clean air with economic benefits
  • 22. The relevant standards for Low Energy Air Filters
    • The filter test standard that applies to the testing of air filters is EN779:2002
    • EN13779:2007 advises
    • F7 as a minimum and F9 as the advised for required particulate efficiency

  • 23. Low Energy Air Filter Service Packages
    • Low Energy Air Filter AHU filter mounting upgrades
    • Complete Low Energy Air Filter installation and maintenance contracts
    • AHU filter monitoring with demonstration of benefits
    • Additional Duct cleaning and coil cleaning AHU system packages.
