Unit abstract
1. Weekly Objectives:
Learn the 5 Literary Elements of Literature through Harry Potter
Parts of Harry Potter that will be covered each day:
Day 1 – Hogwarts Houses
- ASSURE
- Pre-Survey Gauging Existing Knowledge linked using QR code
- Definition poster will be shown at beginning of each morning with 7 common terms when
dealing with Harry Potter terms
- Wikispaces will be linked too using QR Code
- Listen to Vokis about each of the 5 literary elements
- Begin Wiki Creation
o Create page for Literary Elements and document what’s covered by the vokis in this
page for reference throughout the week
- Read Over Blog Post detailing each of the 5 houses
o Comment on Blog as if they were an upcoming Hogwarts student discussing which
house they’d want to be in
- Students will create a poster advertising for their favored house outlining the qualities it’s
known for
- Everything will be documented and added to the Day 1 section of the Wiki
Day 2 - Quidditch and Timeline
- ASSURE
- Definition poster will be shown at beginning of each morning wi th 7 common terms when
dealing with Harry Potter terms
- Review Vokis as bellringer from the days before
- Listen to Podcast giving brief summaries for each book
- Complete webquest on Quidditch
- Each small group create an informative youtube video detailing assigned sections (there will be
8 videos (1 for each book summary and 1 group explaining how to play QUidditch)
- At end of day, students will watch video of an Arts and Bots robot creation showing the battle of
Hogwarts
- Document everything on Wiki under Day 2 section
Day 3 – Protagonists
- ASSURE
- Definition poster will be shown at beginning of each morning with 7 common terms when
dealing with Harry Potter terms
- Go to a pre determined Twitter link giving the definition to Protagonist linked to on QR
- Review Vokis as bellringer from the days before
- Follow QR Code to harry potter character wiki
2. - Create graphic organizer to outline which characters on the wikia are protagonists using
powerpoint
- Complete webquest about Dumbledore
- Watch YouTube video outlining several of the main protagonists and how important they are to
the overall storyline of Harry Potter
- Fill in Smartboard tri venn diagram comparing and contrasting Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and
Hermione Granger
- Document everything under Day 3 tab on wiki
Day 4 – Antagonists
- ASSURE
- Go to a pre-determined Facebook page Link giving the definition to Antagonist linked with QR
- Review Vokis as bellringer from the days before
- Definition poster will be shown at beginning of each morning with 7 common terms when
dealing with Harry Potter terms
- Watch photo story that outlines a few of the major antagonists and why they were antagonists
- Follow QR code to harry potter character wiki
- Create graphic organizer to outline which characters on the wikia are antagonists on Glogster
- Analyze altered image and create a photostory to display analysis
- Document everything under Day 4 tab on wiki
Day 5 - Year to year Progression
- ASSURE
- Review Vokis as bellringer from the days before
- Definition poster will be shown at beginning of each morning with 7 common terms when
dealing with Harry Potter terms
- Students will listen to a small series of Vokis where they talk about how Harry Potter completes
each element of literature so students can compare and expand on thei r work from earlier in
the week
- Students will do some free research and documentation using the unofficial Harry Potter wikia
which is linked with QR code
- Students will create a podcast on their free research findings explaining what topic they
researched, what they found about their research, and what components of their topic fit into
each of the 5 literary elements
o This will go on day 5 of their wiki
- For assessment, children will create a cumulative database using days 1-5. For assessment, all of
their findings will be put together in a breaking news format where they will outline their
findings from each of the 5 days activities, explain what each of the 5 literary elements are, and
talk about how Harry Potter fills each of the 5 literary elements. This page of the wiki must be
filled out using only information gathered throughout the week. This page will use the following
template:
