This project is joint project betaween Thailand and Vietnam, The study of hygienic practices in small scale poultry SH in Asian partnership countries. The leader of the project in Thailand is Dr. Suvichai Rojanastein and the project leader of VN is Dr. Nguyn Vier Khong.
First of all I would like to tell about our rationale and concepts why we focus on hygienic practices in small scale SH. Thailand produce food products to many countries and we define ourself as kitchen of the world. Although the control of the product quality is good but the product sale especially in the rural area is stiil need to improve and for the developing countries such as thailand and VN the food borne disease is still main problem. So the food safty is the priority for solving the problem. Many research suggest that the SH might be the source of Dz contamination in meat product and you know there are many discipline associated with the SH such as socio-economic, Vet science, public health, and regulation.
From those reasons we get 2 main objectives, to elucidate the status of small scale SLH and their affect to ecological and health in the community and the second objective is to enhance the hygiene and function.
I would like to show you the production chain of the chicken meat, There are many part involve, farm to transportation SH vendor and consumer and there are government organizations involved the chain too, the MoPH, DLD, local administration, and Department of Health.
So we identify the stakeholder as the picture, PH authorities, LAO, SHE owner, consumer, people in the community, meat vendor, Envi officer DLD offcers
This figure show the conceptual framework of the study, we focus on many discipline Social-ecomomics-envi-PH-Vet –regulation and we try to find out the association among them.
We used at least 4 methods to collected data, because each method has own weak point, so other method will strengthen each one.
This picture show the study site of the project, in Thailand we study in Chiang Mai and in VN we study in Hanoi
Because this project is still running, so I will present the preliminary results As I show you there are many gov organization involve to the SH but DLD is the main responsible organization to control the SH. The act for SH has been used since 1992 and the SH standard regulation is strictly pratices since the outbreak of AI, DLD try to bring SH to get the standards but the SH who get mostly is the big one but all of the SH do not get the SH
For the last two yrs, there were 80 SH in Chiang Mai. But for this year 28 SH had to stop running the bussiness. Data from interview indicate that the owner could not improve their SH to get the stardard. The owner have to invest money to improve their SH so they have to find the loan. Because you see in the average income is around 34,500 Baht and the monthly expense is around 24,000 Baht. There is not too much margin.
For public health aspect, the improper hygienic management is common practices in every SH and we also found that mojority of the consumer concern about the prize of the chicken meat more than the source of the chicken meat. For the environmental impact we found that two third of the SH drain the waster water to the environment directly without treatment so we also isolate Salmonella from the soil and the waste water around the SH
This slide show some biosecurity comparison betaween TH and VN. The cleaning and disinfection, the source of the water and the officer visit.
This table show the class of hygienic practices in TH and VN . You see most of them have poor practices.
This table show the prevalence of the Salmonella in slaughtering process, we collect samples from each of the process and you can see that we found Salmonella in every points except the worker. The prevalence in VN is very high
This figure show the camparison of the income 50% of the SH owner in Thailand said that the income is good while most of SH owner in VN said that the income is so so.
This picture show the general practices in SH in Thailand
This picture show the waste water drain to the environment
This picture show the working inVN
Now we are still collect the data and we will finish all data collection in February. And Then joint meeting TH-VN will be set up for data analysis. It will be set up around February next year. From data analysis, we expect the recommendation for the policy making.
We wish to set the trial for intervention , select the pilot SH to apply the implementation and so the new phase with the funding will be discussed later.
In our study we expect the output that the recommendation for the hygienic practices in the small scale poutlry SH And the outcome we expect the systemic approach to improve the SH and practical hygienic practices would be happened
Because this project has just started for 6 months we still not see any development , however we will look closely on any change sush as collaboration among the stakeholder especially the colloration between SH owner and the officer
