2. Butterfly Life Cycle
Females lay eggs in the late spring or early
summer.
All butterflies start as an egg, then
become caterpillars. The chrysalis is the
pupa stage and the adults are
caterpillars.
The big change that caterpillars make is
called metamorphosis.
3. Butterfly Bodies
Butterfly wings are made of many small
scales linked together.
Butterflies are insects because they have
six legs and three body parts: head,
thorax, and abdomen.
Butterflies use a long, straw-like
mouthpiece called a proboscis to drink
nectar from flowers.
4. Interesting Facts
In the whole world, there are more than
20,00 different types of butterflies.
When butterflies migrate, or fly to a
warmer place for winter, they can travel
more than 80,000 miles in one day.
Butterflies can lay up to 1,000 eggs at one
time.

learned a lot
about
butterflies.
Thank you for your
attention.
Editor's Notes
Welcome to the presentation of From Caterpillar to Butterfly. I hope you gain lots of information about the visitors we have had in our classroom.
The butterfly has an amazing life cycle. Female butterflies lay their eggs in late spring which is about April or May or early summer which is June or July. All caterpillars start as tiny eggs. The caterpillars then hatch and eat which is the larva stage in a insect’s life. Then the caterpillar will enter the pupa stage as a chrysalis. This is when metamorphosis occurs and the caterpillar goes through a huge change. When it emerges it will be an adult, a butterfly.
Butterfly bodies are the reason that caterpillars are also classified as insects. The butterfly is an adult caterpillar and it has 6 legs, three body parts: the head, thorax and abdomen. It also has antennae and wings like many other insects. The wings of a butterfly are interesting as they are covered in tiny colorful scales. They also have a different type of mouth than their babies. The proboscis is a straw-like tube that they use to drink nectar.
Butterflies may be small but that doesn’t stop them from being mighty animals. There are more than 20,000 different species or types of butterfly in the whole world. Butterflies, like the monarch migrate or fly south during the colder months to lay eggs. During this migration, they can travel more than 80,000 miles in one day. That is like driving from South Carolina to California 4 times. Female butterflies can lay up to 1,000 eggs at one time.
I hope you learned a lot about butterflies. Tell me something interesting that you learned.
