  3. 3. Metamorphosis<br />The process of transformation from an immature form to an adult in two or more stages. <br />Larva<br />The second stage in the cycle. Also known as caterpillar. <br />Pupa<br />The third stage in the cycle. Also known as chrysalis. <br />Antennae<br />On the butterflies head. Used to taste air and drink nectar from flower.<br />Thorax<br />Part of the butterfly where the heart and lungs are. <br />Vocabulary<br />

  5. 5. The first stage of the butterfly is the egg. <br />Female butterflies lay their eggs on leaves. <br />Depending on the butterfly that laid the eggs, eggs can be round or oval. <br />Butterfly eggs are tiny: the size of a pin head. <br />Life Cycle:egg <br />
  6. 6. The second stage of a butterfly is the Larva, or Caterpillar. <br />Caterpillars eat leaves constantly and grow very fast<br />Caterpillars shed their skin FOUR times before they are fully grown. <br />Life Cycle:Larva(caterpillar)<br />
  7. 7. The third stage of a butterfly is the Pupa, or Chrysalis. <br />Caterpillars spin a silk pad to hang from.<br />This is the resting stage. <br />What happens inside the Chrysalis?<br />Caterpillar transforms into a butterfly! <br />Life Cycle:Pupa (Chrysalis)<br />
  8. 8. The fourth and last stage in the cycle is when the caterpillar is done forming inside the pupa and an adult butterfly emerges! <br />Then the cycle continues from the beginning. <br />Life Cycle:Adult Butterfly<br />
  9. 9. Butterflies have two antennae, six legs, abdomen, and wings. <br />The proboscis is for drinking liquids like flower nectar. <br />Adult butterflies<br />
