4. Flight Information SMS Service
Introduction
• An initiative jointly under taken by Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) and
FOCUSONE Nepal
• A public service to ease the process of finding real-time flight status
• Prior to the launch of the service general public had to call airlines office or the
airport inquiry
• The service has provided anytime anywhere access to information. People now
do not have to be at the airport at scheduled time to pickup or drop and can
reach airport by checking the flight status.
• The service is available for Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu.
• The service is available to subscribers of all major telecom operators;
Nepal Telecom (NT), Ncell and United Telecom Limited (UTL)
5. Flight Information SMS Service
System Layout
FOCUSONE has connections to all major telecom operators in Nepal. The SMS gateway located at
FOCUSONE premises is connected to the SMSCs of all the telecom operators through the dedicated
connections using SMPP 3.4 protocol.
The TIA SMS application is responsible for receiving the SMS content from the gateway, parsing the
content, retrieving appropriate flight information from the FIDS located at the airport and sending
response to the user.
6. Flight Information SMS Service
Service Platform
F1-SMS - SMS Gateway
F1-SMS is an SMS gateway with capability to connect to multiple SMSCs using standard SMPP
protocol and interface with various content providers. F1-SMS enables SMS content providers to
easily and quickly deploy various SMS based services. The gateway is developed using Java and
runs on virtually any platform. At FOCUSONE the SMS gateway is being operated on Linux
server. (Ref: http://www.ccfocusone.com/products/F1-SMS.htm)
TIA SMS Application
The SMS application is developed using Java and runs under open source Apache Tomcat servlet
container. The application utilizes pattern recognition algorithm to parse the SMS content instead
of strict syntax base parsing to overcome possible typo or syntax errors and ease the users.
FIDS
The FIDS deployed at the airport is from Net Display Systems, Netherland.
7. Flight Information SMS Service
Usage
Mobile users can text the flight number to the short code 4747 to get the flight detail. On texting the
flight number detail flight information will be replied as shown in the mock-up images below:
8. Flight Information SMS Service
Usage
Users may not know the flight number, may just know the airlines name and the departure or arrival
location or just the airlines names. Hence users can text just the airlines names (complete or partial
name; no specific structure; spaces etc). The server side SMS application will do a pattern based
parsing and return the flight detail if a specific match is found or a list of matching flights with brief
information as shown below:
