3. Computer introduction
A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or
data. It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data. You can use a
computer to type documents, send email, and browse the Web. You can
also use it to accounting, database management, presentations, games,
and more.
4. The word "computer" was first used
The word "computer" was first recorded as being used in 1613 and was
originally was used to describe a human who performed calculations or
computations. The definition of a computer remained the same until the end
of the 19th century when people began to realize machines never get tired
and can perform calculations much faster and more accurately than any team
of human computers ever could.
5. Computer history
The first person to make the computer that runs and stores internal
information and programs is Alan Turing in 1945. But, the first person to
create and come up with the idea of computerized products is Charles
Babbage in the 1840s.
6. First generation
1937 – 1946 - In 1937 the first electronic digital computer was built by
Dr. John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry. It was called the Atanasoff-
Berry Computer (ABC). In 1943 an electronic computer name the
Colossus was built for the military, this computer weighed 30 tons, and
had 18,000 vacuum tubes which was used for processing.
7. Second generation
1947 – 1962 - This generation of computers used transistors instead of
vacuum tubes which were more reliable. In 1951 the first computer for
commercial use was introduced to the public; the Universal Automatic
Computer (UNIVAC 1). In 1953 the International Business Machine (IBM)
650 and 700 series computers made their mark in the computer world.
8. Third generation
In 1963 - this generation computers became smaller, more
powerful more reliable and they are able to run many different
programs at the same time. In1980 Microsoft Disk Operating System
(MS-Dos) was born and in 1981 IBM introduced the personal
computer (PC) for home and office use
9. Desktop model
A computer designed to fit comfortably on top of a desk, typically with
the monitor sitting on top of the computer. Desktop model computers
are broad and low, desktop model computers are generally limited to
three internal mass storage devices.
Personal Computer Types
10. A small, portable computer -- small enough that it can sit on your
lap. Nowadays, laptop computers are more frequently called
notebook computers.
Laptop computer
11. Palmtop
A small computer that literally fits in your palm. Compared to full-size
computers, palmtops are severely limited, but they are practical for
certain functions such as phone books and calendars.
12. It is important to make technology decisions at the right time and
for the right reasons. Good business decisions provide good people
with appropriate supporting tools so they can produce good
products. When it comes to software development, dealing with
tough language issues head-on is one requirement for today’s
visionary manager.
