What Makes D-Day Successful
What made D–Day successful? What happened on D–Day? What happened after D–Day was over?
D–day was successful, full of many historical events, and gained the allies many victories. General
Dwight D. Eisenhower gave the order for D–Day because the Germans were weakening from the
liberation of France. The Germans position was then revealed causing the D–Day was successful for
many reasons. It was a surprising attack on the beaches of Normandy. Over 130,000 landing troops
and 23,000 paratroopers all attacked the beach in 1944. The Germans took this attack by surprise,
therefore the Germans expected an allied invasion on the North coast of France. The troops
managed to secure all 5 allied landing beaches by the end of D–Day. The allied troops were a great
advantage to the United States.
D–Day was full of many historical events and casualties. The United States troops invaded
Normandy on June 6, 1944 which is now known as D–Day or Deliverance day. General Dwight
Eisenhower gave the order for D–Day to begin on June 5, 1944. Bad weather forced the battle to be
postponed, therefore the battle of D–Day was fought on June 6. The allies had a total of 206,000
casualties by the end of the war. Over 50,000 allied troops and aviators lost their lives in the battle
of Normandy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paris was liberated in August 1944, therefore the Americans, the British, and the French were racing
together to beat the Soviets to Berlin. On their way to Berlin the troops discovered the concentration
camps, gas chambers, and crematoriums. They the Jews were slowly rescued in between 1944 and
1945, but there is no exact date. After the troops made it to Berlin they found out that Adolf Hitler
had killed himself, then on May 8, 1945 the Germans surrendered and World War II was officially
over. A total of 70 million people died from the horrible events of World War II, which became one

The Cuban Missile Crisis: The Beginning Of The Cold War
It was a battle of beliefs between leaders of powerful nations. It was a battle between Communism
and Democracy. A battle that could have caused a nuclear war......The event that I am referring to is
the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Cuban missile crisis was just one of the important events that came in
the beginning of the Cold War. Some of the other events that occurred at the beginning of the Cold
War were the Space Race, the Berlin Wall, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. We will look at
each of these events in some detail, but the main focus is going to be on the Cuban Missile Crisis
and why it caused so much tension between the US and the USSR. To start, we will look at the
impact these events had on the Citizens of the U.S. and how that ... Show more content on

The cold war started in the late 1940s and out of the five important events I have mentioned the
Korean War was the first event to occur. Since this was the first event to occur, it most likely caused
tension between the USSR and the US but it was not at its highest level. The next event was the
Vietnam War. While the war did not officially start until after the Cuban Missile Crisis, there was
some tension that started to build between the USSR and the US. However, the tension still was not
at its highest point. After this, the the space race occurred and as I mentioned, this did cause some
tension between the US and the USSR, but it was not like the tension caused in some of the other
events. The final event that occurred before the Cuban Missile crisis was the building of the Berlin
wall. The Berlin wall definitely caused tension between the US and the USSR, but still the tension
was not at its peak. The final event that occurred was the Cuban Missile Crisis and this is when the
tension reached its peak. People will argue that the other four events caused the most tension,
however, I think that since

Due to the Berlin wall families were divided, and no physical connection was able to be made from
each side. Jobs from the East and West side of Berlin were cut off. The reason given to the East
Berliners for putting the wall up was too, put off aggression from the West, even though the wall
pointed inward to East German territory. During the wall's 30 year history, unstable and varying
reports claim that either 192 or 239 people were killed trying to cross the wall. Interestingly enough,
through the wall's 30 year history there were roughly 5000 successful escapes into West Berlin.
In source B, it states "it's not a very nice solution, but a wall is a hell of a better than a war". This is
John F Kennedy's perspective on the construction of the wall. This wall created tension all over the

As one of the darkest times in history, it symbolised the division of democratic West Berlin and
communist East Berlin.
In 1963, John F Kennedy visited the city, to give a speech that would be recorded as one the most
symbolic and moving speech for years to come. This speech was to show and tell the USSR the
determination of the West Berliners to remain how they are, which was to stay non–communist.
Source C is about Ronald Reagan's speech at the Berlin wall, on the 12th of June 1987. It was time
that the new leader of the USSR realised that changes needed to be made. President Reagan
understood that it's time to end this 30 year battle between East Germany and West Germany. in
1998 he announced that the USSR will not come in disturbance any more or at all in Eastern
Europe. A year sooner, a few words that not only Germany were waiting for but the whole world

Essay On The Berlin Blockade Dbq
Following World War II the alliance between the U.S., Britain and The Soviet Union began to
unravel as the USSR pushed for the spread of communism which threatened America and the free
world. For the next few decades, America's leaders would need to strategically combat the
expansion of the iron curtain and communism. Issues broke out all over the world but the most
significant "battles" were that of Berlin, Korea and Cuba. The U.S. contained communism in Berlin
by remaining persistent, in Korea by battling, and in Cuba by taking caution.
American and British leaders prevented the spread of communism to Berlin by means of patient and
strategic actions against the Soviet Union. This strategy is shown in Document B, where it shows a
map of divided Germany. The Soviet Union hoped to take Germany under its empire by cutting off
all aid from other countries. this became known as the Berlin blockade. the U.S. refused to let the
USSR gain Germany and as a result America and Britain airlifted supplies to the people of Berlin.
No matter what the weather, they airlifted supplies. this showed the world and the Soviet Union
what America was willing to do to stop communism.

Following World War II, Cuba experienced a communist revolution with the takeover of Fidel
Castro. To make matters worse, America discovered the soviets had been supplying cuba with
missiles. This meant that the USSR could bomb the US with nuclear power at any given moment.
Document D illustrates the danger as it shows that the missiles range all the way from New York
and Washington D.C. to Houston and Miami. The US proceeded cautiously by initiating a
quarantine which stopped the flow of soviet ships to Cuba. This hindered the process and allowed
the U.S. to eliminate a chance of communistic

How Did The Extent To Which Germany Changed After World...
Post World War II Germany had survived, only to be divided between Eastern and Western powers.
Nowhere was this more obvious than in Berlin. Berlin was divided between the USSR, USA, UK,
and France. A hundred miles within the USSR German zone of control, western controlled Berlin
adopted policies that were in direct confrontation with Stalin's vision of a communist Germany.
The USSR and Allied powers disagreed on Germany's future. The USSR had removed most of
Germany's industrial might, but the Allies had wanted Germany to become independent. West
German industrial strength was something that Stalin would not accept. After a breakdown in
negotiations over a new German constitution and the Allies issuing their own currency in western
Berlin, the USSR began a complete blockade of western Berlin. Stalin believed that the Allies could
be forced to abandon their hold on Berlin and give the Soviets more legitimacy in their vision of
Germany's future. The Allies, however, would not take this lightly. An Allied air transport campaign
ensued and would supply Berlin until May 1949, when Stalin lifted the blockade (Text Pg. 954).
Even though Stalin lifted the blockade, it just confirmed to the world that a new "war" was being
fought with the Soviets. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In late 1949, West Germany became the "German Federal Republic," and East Germany became the
"German Democratic Republic." The battle lines were now drawn. The Allies would form NATO,
and promise protection to their members should any of them be attacked. The USSR, with its allies,
formed the Warsaw Pact. The Soviet Council of Mutual Assistance was held in 1949, and would
lead to the integration of the new Soviet hegemony. Berlin was, in fact, a microcosm of the larger
division of Germany. The proximity of the two sides of this new conflict, coupled with the advent of
wider spread nuclear weapons, would lead to fear of a war unlike any had ever

Analysis Of Tim O ' Brien 's ' Going After The '
Paul in Wonderland: Reality vs. Fantasy in Tim O'Brien's Going After Cacciato
On the surface, Tim O'Brien's 1978 novel Going After Cacciato seems like a typical telling of the
Vietnam War from the perspective of one of the soldiers as the Third Squad searches for Cacciato, a
soldier who has gone AWOL. However, a closer reading would reveal that the vast majority of the
novel does not actually take place in reality. This search for Cacciato is a fantasy which takes place
in Paul Berlin's head, and the scenarios and even the Vietnamese people who aid the Third Squad
are completely fictitious. Only in a handful of chapters does the novel take place in reality, and even
fewer of these chapters takes place in one which is permanent. Reading the ... Show more content

The terminology 'parts unknown' is frequently used in fairy tales and other stories in the genre of
fantasy, especially as a representation of a 'good' place. The fact that they are currently fighting a
war in Vietnam, along with knowledge that Vietnam was once a colony of France, juxtaposes Paris
with the term 'parts unknown', as Paris can be seen similarly to the soldiers fighting the war as the
Emerald City is seen in any of the books in the Oz series.
The other chapter that takes place on the battlefield in a permanent reality is chapter 46, the last
chapter of the novel. One noticeable comparison between this chapter and the first chapter is that
they both share the same name: 'Going After Cacciato'. This shows that they are both parts of the
same scene, where Doc tells Corson the news about Cacciato going AWOL. In this regard, the novel
seems to have finally come around full–circle as Paul Berlin fully reenters reality after the fantasy of
the Third Squad chasing Cacciato across multiple continents. The beginning of the novel has
become the end.
This is even supported by a summary which occurs early in this chapter. "Her smile when she first
saw the...of refuge. Such a fine idea." (325). Berlin wishes the fantasy actually happened. To be in
love with Vietnamese refugee and 'dream girl' Sarkin Aung Wan, to be with her in Paris and away
from the war, to perhaps live 'happily ever after'. All these things he wants to have happen. Most
men have these 'happy

DBQ: Containment
The US and the Soviets have constantly had disagreements and conflicts throughout the Cold War.
The main conflicts were the Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Berlin Airlift. This essay is
going to explain what containment is and how the US used containment against the Soviets.
Containment is when someone is trying to prevent something else from spreading and US used it by
preventing the communist government of the Soviet Union from spreading. The US and its allies
tried anything they could to contain communism. The Soviet–supported North Korea tried to reunite
the US–controlled South Korea by force. The Korean War was called a war but wasn't actually a
"war" because war was never declared by either side, so it was actually called a United Nation
police action. North Korea attacked South without warning and Harry Truman and the United
Nations vowed to defend South Korea (Doc. C). The battle almost pushed ... Show more content on

Germany and the capital, Berlin, was split at the end of WWII. The East Berlin and Germany were
controlled by the Soviets and West Berlin and Germany was controlled by the US, France, and
Britain. Since West Berlin was completely surrounded by communism, Joseph Stalin, the leader of
the Soviet Union, decided to prevent any shipments (including food) from going into West Berlin
(Doc. B) in an attempt to starve them out. They created a blockade. When the US and its allies
found out, they sent planes over to get the shipments and take them to the West Berliners which
provided over two million people with supplies ranging from food to coal for nearly over a year
(Doc. B). Almost one year later, Stalin had decided to remove the blockade since there was no point
in using it anymore. This shows containment because although the Communists tried to stop the US
and its allies, the US and allies managed to find a way to prevent the Communists from

The Cold War : The Causes Of The Cold War
When siblings who share a room get in an argument, the room gets divided in half, where neither
sibling can cross the other's side. The imaginary border in the room is a direct result of the tension
from the argument. Now of course, this can easily be changed when siblings forgive and forget. In
Europe and across the world, the tensions from the Cold War affected the borders of various
countries, but the two opposing sides were not quick to agree and "forgive" each other, like siblings
do. Overall, the Cold War affected the borders of Europe and other countries across the world by
splitting various countries and dividing continents.
The Cold War affected the borders of Europe with the Iron Curtain and the splitting of Germany.
The Iron Curtain, the border dividing communist eastern Europe from the civilized western Europe,
was introduced by Winston Churchill, who served as the prime minister of Europe during the Cold
War. The Iron Curtain divided the Soviet Union and its satellite states from open contact with
western European and non–Soviet controlled areas. The eastern European countries allied under the
Warsaw Pact, which had the Soviet Union as the head state, and the western European countries
allied under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, where the United States was the dominant
power. The Iron Curtain affected Europe because it further increased the tension between the two
countries. The Cold War caused this division to occur because the Cold War is based on

Stalin's Turning Point
In the days that followed the German forces fought their way into Stalingrad against intense
resistance. This was urban street fighting of the most brutal type, with vast losses on both sides. The
ruins of houses and factories began to stink as hot winds carried the smell of decaying corpses into
every hole and crevice (History.com 4). For simple reasons of morale, the Russians could not let this
city fall just as the Russians could not let the Germans get hold of the oil fields in the Caucasus.

civilians, stating that the army would fight harder knowing that they were defending residents of the

The Civil War still has major impacts on America today. For example, an immediate response to the
war was the ending of slavery and the beginning of equality in education, jobs, and many other
aspects of life. On the negative side, some traces of racism still exist today. Black people are still
reminded of their ancestors and their past of slavery before the war and segregation after the war.
Marathon, Greece is located about 22 miles from Athens, Greece. This is the site of the famous
Battle of Marathon which took place in 490 B.C. between the Athenians, led by Platea, and the
Persians, led by Datis and Artaphernes. The Persian War was sparked by the Greek involvement and
support in the Ionian revolt, Ionia was a small Greek polis. The Athenians sent forces to aid the
Ionians in their endeavor to overthrow Persian rule. King Darius I of Persia swore he would get
revenge on the Athenians. The Battle of Marathon marked a turning point in the Persian Wars,
which ended the Persian invasion. The Greeks took a victory over Persian in this battle and Persia
was at a loss of more than just dignity. They lost the chance of expansion which was necessary to
acquire more resources and wealth for their kingdom. To notify the city of defeat or victory a runner,
Phaedippas was sent to Athens and when he arrived he was able to get the word "victory" out and
then collapsed and died. The Greek word for victory is Nike and this is where the shoe company got
its name.

BATTLE OF SEELOW HEIGHTS
Operation Berlin started on 16 April 1945 at zero three hundred hours (Antill, 2005). The Battle of
Seelow Heights is the first of several pushes to occupy Berlin and to kill or capture Hitler. Even
with a skilled General Staff working directly under Hitler, he refused to listen to his advisor's
suggestions on how best to employ his forces in defense of Berlin. With the end of the war rapidly
approaching, Hitler would rather take all of Germany down with him instead of trying to preserve
what was left of the country. The Russians ferociously fought their way to Berlin from the East and
conducted the largest artillery bombardment of World War II. If Hitler could not hold off the

Stalin created a three–phased attack on Berlin with Seelow Heights being the main push. Stalin's
intent was to occupy Berlin by the 22nd of April, covering just thirty–five miles in one week of
fighting (Welsh, 2017). Soviets moved anti–aircraft searchlights to the front and planned on using
them to direct infantry and armor to their designated objectives. Designed to probe defenses and
locate both strong points and artillery emplacements throughout Seelow Heights, Russia launched
limited attacks on 14 April 1945. Even in these smaller skirmishes with the Russians, the Germans
suffered numerous losses and had to draw on reserves from Berlin to close these gaps in the
defensive lines (Welsh, 2017). During these small skirmishes, Hitler Youth leader Artur Axemann
offered to send his underage soldiers to fight along the Oder river. General Weidling was disgusted
with this and said, "You cannot sacrifice these children for a cause that is already lost" (Welsh,

The Tactics Of The German Army
The strategy of the German Army was very simple. The Germans knew that the Soviets were
making their move into Berlin. The Germans had decided to bunker down and fight to the death for
the city of Berlin. The Germans had decided that it would take about two hundred thousand men to
defend the capital of Berlin. The two hundred thousand that were to guard Berlin was comprised of
mostly women, older men, and younger children. The German army was aware of the amount of
Soviet forces that were planning to attack Berlin, and built a strong defensive position in order to
counter the Soviet offensive. The Germans constructed trenches, barricades, and other protection
measures to ensure their stronghold in Berlin. This became the final preparations for the city and
waited for the Soviets advancement. The Soviets knew the key to success in large battles by using
major firepower in order to eliminate the enemy. Field Artillery was a key factor in this strategy by
providing the massive barrages into the city and taking down supply planes and closing supply
routes. The Soviets planned the attack about sixty miles out of Berlin and knew that the German
troops were hurt and undermanned so they used this to its advantage. The soviet forces strategically
placed around Berlin and gave orders to attack from the different positions. Soviet intelligence
reported that they outnumbered the Germans men, equipment, and aircraft. The Moltke Bridge was

War is the result of hate and brutality that can affect people in a negative way. The Cold War relates

Conflict and competition can lead to war. The Cold War was a 45 year long rivalry between the
Western powers, led by the United States and the Soviet Union. The United States formed a military
base to protect them from other threats such as the Soviets. The expansion of the Soviet Union was
seen as a threat to the U.S. and other Western powers after World War II. While the Soviets were

This issued a creation of East and West German States. The West was aligned with the U.S. while
the East was aligned with the soviets. ("Berlin Wall") This war never reached a direct military
conflict, though the United States and the Soviet Union shared a mutual distrust. After years of
association, Russia and the U.S. competed over economic development of Manchuria in the 1890 's.
The competition turned into an ideological rivalry that pitted U.S. capitalist democracy against
Russian Communism. During the battle Soviets disagreed with the U.S. and Great Britain over
military strategies and post war plans for Germany. ("Cold War.") The battle of the Cold War has a

Behind The Battle Of Berlin Wall Analysis
Freedom shakes the grounds of Berlin Germany as Ronald Reagan gives the best motivational
speech of all time. He has a goal set and he will not stop until he does just that. In Frost's work he
also has a goal and a battle that he is fighting, both of these men fight against a wall that does
nothing but cut relationships in half. I believe that the wall in both of these works should be taken
down. Every man deserves a chance at freedom, and with a wall being a constant reminder of
separation, that is not possible. Twelve foot high and 103 miles long, the wall that does everything
but good to the city of Berlin. The wall that stood amongst the city of Berlin had one job and it
served its purpose well, to separate. In Frost's poem he lived amongst the battle of separation also as

through so much hard work and heart ache so that there separation is not broken. They go through
battles each year mentally and physically fighting the wall, nature, and each other, instead of
making peace and love between the two. In Reagan's passage the wall is separating not only angry
neighbor, but family and two sides of a city. The Berlin wall was put up through the city of Berlin. It
was built to separate the two halves of Berlin, the east side was the totalitarian while the west side
was more of a democracy. The people on the east could have no contact with family, friends, or any

Document Based Question The 46 year struggle known as the Cold War all started over a

Truman believe that Stalin was planning to conquer the world and that the former alliance was

of the Cold War the United States adopted a foreign policy called "containment".The United States

the Germans. The Soviet Army had 2,500,000 soldiers, 7,500 aircrafts, and 6,250 tanks. On the

American Foreign Policy
American Foreign Policy Foreign policy is defined as a policy of a nation that is used to persuade its
dealing with other nations, that has a main goal of achieving national objectives. Foreign policy has
an origin time of about 1905–1910. During the early years of foreign policy American thought it
should practice political isolation from Europe during times of peace in other words they wanted to
be more iso–global. This idea was derived by America's diplomats during these early years. This
foreign policy helped to keep America out of foreign relations for a short amount of time, so it didn't

John F Kennedy Ich Bin Ein Berliner Analysis
On June 26, 1963, John F. Kennedy gave what is considered one of the most recognized and
poignant speeches of his career, and in the history of the cold war. The speech was named "Ich bin
ein Berliner" translated into "I am a Berliner" and was given at a time in history when communism
was trying to take hold across the globe. The division of Germany into the communist East
Germany and the democratic West Germany was a constant reminder of communism's threat to
freedom. Kennedy's speech, given in Democratic West Berlin, Germany, brought together the free
world as hundreds of thousands of people around the world were able see first hand what
communism did to people who were once free. The Berlin wall was built by the Soviets in August
1961 and separated Communist East Berlin from Democratic West Berlin. It was built as a way to
prevent people in East Berlin from escaping to West Berlin. People in East Berlin were experiencing
their economy decreasing under Communism, whereas West Berlin was experiencing economic
growth. Several year's earlier the Soviet Union's leader Leonid Khrushchev had wanted to sign a
treaty saying no one from East Berlin could flee over to West Berlin to be free. Khrushchev used the
Soviet's nuclear bombs as threats and Kennedy told Khrushchev that any attack on West Berlin

The Events Of The World War I
The events of 6th June 1944 is widely regarded as one of the most significant things that led to the
success of the Allies in World War 1. It did not only allow them the start the liberation of Eastern
Europe but also reach Berlin to end the reign of the Nazis and Adolf Hitler over Europe. However
there are other battles (Stalingrad, the Battle of Britain etc.) that could have been just as significant
as D–Day. From the beginning of the Allied planning the collectively realised that it would not be
easy for them to land on France and therefor it would be incredibly significant if they were able to.
The meticulous preparation made sure that every aspect was perfect: the weather, the location and
the 156,000 troops that were going to be used. Previously attempts to break through the line of
Nazis on the french coast, there had been an attack at Dieppe which had failed, this showed that they
had to get everything right. The allies used various ways to trick Hitler. For example, they bombed
the area around Calais to make him think that they would land further north, this meant that the
germans were focused on protecting northern France. Instead they disembarked around Normandy
which gave them the element of surprise when starting their reconquest of Europe. This significantly
allowed the allies to quickly gain back the parts of France that had been occupied by Germany for
the last couple of years. D–Day also significantly created a two front war that Germany had to fight.

Joseph Stalin the general of the Russian Army ordered the two leading generals – Zhukov and

manpower and equipment the Russians got there pretty easily. Joseph knew that Berlin was going to
be a little difficult since Berlin is the capital of Germany But, the Russians managed to destroy the
Germans.
The Battle of Berlin was devastating in many ways. The battle ended up with the Germans
surrendering on May 2, 1945. The Germans surrendered two days after Hitler committed suicide
because of all the Russian tanks coming into the town and destroying everything. At the end of the
war the Russians lost about 80,000 men and over 250,000 were either wounded or gone missing.
Over 2,000 of the 3,000 tanks were destroyed and about 150,000 German soldiers were killed
during the battle.
The aftermath of the war was hard on Germany. After the one month war there were many thing
wrong like the city of Berlin was a pretty big city at the time and basically every building was
crumbled into pieces which took years to recover. For the Germans there were over one million
families left without any homes, food, or clean water. Also while Berlin was almost done being put

Stalingrad Turning Point
"He ordered us to stand fast and save Stalingrad. So we knew then that it was 'do or die.' We could
not retreat." This was a quote said by Vasily Chuikov on the Battle of Stalingrad during World War
II. The Battle of Stalingrad was the turning point of the war in Eastern Europe, and possibly for the
whole war. It was the most deadliest battle of World War II, with about 1.1 million Soviet casualties
and about 800,000 Axis casualties. It ended in a Soviet victory and then the Soviets began to push
against the Nazis, all the way to Berlin by May 1945. The Battle of Stalingrad began on July 17,
1942 when the laggard Germans planes began to bomb Stalingrad. Then, the Soviets became vigil
around the city, and then on February 2, 1943, the German 6th army surrendered inside the city. The
Battle of Stalingrad was the turning point of World War Two because it stopped German
advancement into the U.S.S.R, it gave Joseph Stalin confidence in the Soviet military, and it stopped

retreating from the U.S.S.R. The Soviets, reached Berlin on April 16,1945, when the Battle of Berlin

Analysis Of Tim O ' Brien 's ' The Vietnam War ' Essay
Tim O'Brien, a Vietnam veteran, wrote his award winning novel Going After Cacciato in response to
the Vietnam War. In his novel, the protagonist soldier Paul Berlin, must maneuver through the harsh
elements of Vietnam in pursuit of a simpleton gone A.W.O.L. During his journey, the young soldier
faces sickness, brutality, and death. Berlin uses his rich and imaginative inner world to distract
himself and attempt to make sense of the grim realities of his physical environment. Weaving fact
with fantasy, Tim O'Brien creates an emotionally present narrative of how a vivid imagination was
one soldier's method of coping with the confusion of one of the most paradoxical wars of all time.
The result is an account of physical and psychological survival and the loss of innocence due to the
inner conflict and trauma that combat soldiers endure. The Vietnam War was unsettling to
Americans, causing a divide in the nation. Hundreds of thousands of men were drafted to fight
overseas. Americans were confused as to why, after a decade of fighting, there was no victory in this
lengthy and costly war. Military policy was difficult for Americans to grasp and presidents were
unable to put an end to this dragged out war. As more troops were deployed to Vietnam, more
Americans protested. It was a time of political and social upheaval, where Americans lost faith in
their government. American soldiers were also disenchanted. One Vietnam veteran explains, We, as

1945-1940: The Battle Of Stalingrad
The Battle of Berlin, which lasted from April 16, 1945 to May 2,1945, marked the final major battle
of World War II in Europe. There was virtually no hope for the city of Berlin defenders against the
superior and dominant Red Army, but nevertheless, the city defenders put up a fierce and substantial
battle, turning it into the second most ferocious battle following the Battle of Stalingrad. The heavy
resistance was fueled with the Nazi propaganda regarding the Soviets. After the unsuccessful
Ardennes Offensive in late 1944 and early 1945, which was a last–ditch effort, the Nazis were left
with insufficient forces to defend its border against the Western Allies and the Soviet forces. Hoping
that a decisive victory would impel the Western Allies into peace negotiations and enable him to
deal with the Red Army, Hitler made a few changes and put all his reserves onto the Western front.

Stalin's Defeat: The Battle Of Stalingrad
Stalin's directive to protect Stalingrad at all cost was a pricey affair. Between August 1942 and
January 1943, the battle rampaged from aprtments to basements. The city was completley
surrounded and it was almost impossible to transport in supplies. Consequently, thousands of
civilians and troops starved to death (Sakwa 254). Stalin who was aware of the risks and penalties
gave a message of hope and comfort to the people when he stated tha No other country could have
withstood Germans fascist brigands and their allies (Stalin 14). But Stalin's orders to launch an
offensive in the midst of all the suffering in November 1942 proved decisive. The Soviet troops
struck the Nazi's flanks and then attacked them from behind (Games 34). By attacking using the
flank strategy, the Soviet troops ensured a resonant win. In a matter of time, the Germans found
themselves surrounded in Stalingrad. Additionally, Soviet army applied a new tactic called the
'fighting retreat' which put a strain on Nazi supply lines (Games 35). The Soviet troops were no

Some of the directives issued were not different from the leadership style he had employed since he

sectarians administering in the countryside to kill anyone who was deemed untrutworthy. Ulitiately,
this culminated into a type of carte blanche for Stalin subjects to abuse their power and steal from
those living in rural areas (Hartmann 230). A report conducted after the war showed that the cruelty

Soviet Union were drained, they held considerable power, and both soon rose to superpower. The

West Germany built strong relationships with France, the United States, and Israel. It would also
join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 1955, which restored most of the state 's sovereignty.
East Germany was established as a Stalin–style Socialist state. It became a member of the Warsaw
Pact and came to have one of the most advanced economies and standard of living in the Soviet–
bloc states, though that 's not saying much, as it still lagged behind West Germany. Free speech and
opinions against the dictatorial regime were not tolerated, artistic and intellectual programs were

How Did the U.S. Contain Communism
Since the U.S. was founded (July 4th 1776) the U.S. has been at war constantly. Although this may
not be believable to some readers, the U.S. has been at war for 93% of its existence (222 out of the

the most dangerous. Even though The Soviet Union and the U.S. were a part of an alliance in World
War II, recently after this war ended the U.S. and the Soviets were not on good terms. The U.S.
believed in following the political and economic system of capitalism, the Soviets strongly believed
in communism. While the United States was content with the Soviets believing in communism,
what the U.S. did not find acceptable was the Soviets attempt to spread communism. The real

The War Of The Cold War Essay
One major war ended and another to begin. The Cold war lasted about 45 years. There were no
direct military campaigns between the United States and Soviet Union. However, billions of dollars
and millions of lives were lost. The United States emerged as the greatest power from World War 2.
(Give Me Liberty 896) The country boasted about having the most powerful navy and air force. The
United states accounted for about half of the world's manufacturing capacity, which it alone created
the atomic bomb. Capitalism is superior to the Soviets idea of Communism because the Americans
idea of capitalism has thrived, which is still used in today's era. While communism caused the

DBQ: The Cold War
The Cold War was an intellectual battle between communists and anti communists to have their own
dominance over the modern world. The Cold War started as most wars do, two sides disagreeing
with each other. In this case one side wanted to stop the spread of communism and the other side
wanted them to butt out. What happens when both sides have strong opinions and potentially
dangerous ideas? It just adds more fuel to the fire. The two sides specifically were the USA and the
USSR. Needless to say the USA was against communism and the USSR wasn't. The most
appropriate place to start explaining how the Cold War began is to explain how and where it started.

People knew that if another World War broke out it would result in nuclear weapons used that could
end the world. Even countries who had nuclear bombs but didn't threaten to use them were
considered a very possible threat. Between the USSR and the USA it was like walking on very thin
ice. The nuclear buildup was called the balance of terror (Doc. #7). Having an abundance of nuclear
weapons insured that the balance of terror was kept. The Cuban Missile Crisis contributed to this
fear. When the Cuban Missile Crisis progressed the USA began to make demands. The USA
demanded that they must secure the withdrawal of the missiles (Doc. #8). Cuba persisted that they
were just for defensive. They promised they would remove them if the USA swore not to attack
(Doc. #9). Another form of weapon is proxy wars. Proxy wars, another term for substitute war,
where smaller countries fought on their behalf. The USSR never fought each other directly, but they
supported other opposing sides in actual violent conflicts in the world. The Vietnam and Korean
wars are examples of this. The way this was used as a weapon is because because the US would

What Is The Theme Of The Butter Battle Book
When a topic like the Cold War is mention to children it can be a seen as a harsh and powerful
time. The Butter Battle Book by Dr. Seuss has many similarities involving events in the Cold War
which makes it unacceptable to expose through children's literature.
In the Cold War many events happened due to the political and military tension. For example In
1961, Nikita Khrushchev which the soviet premier had ordered the Berlin Wall built to atop the flow
of refugees from East to West Berlin (Danzer p677). The Berlin Wall was built by the Communist
East German government to prevent its citizens from fleeing to the West (Danzer pR54). The Berlin

Seuss had many events that were similar to the Cold war (1947 – 1991). The Butter battle book had
a wall that separated the Yooks from the Zooks due to many conflicts involving the butter side up
and the butter side down. Well as Yooks and Zooks built a wall so did the event of the Cold War.
The United States built a wall called "The Berlin Wall" to stop the flow of refugees from East to
West Berlin (Government and Politics). Not only did they both build a wall but they also had
conflicts against the other union. For instance The Yooks and Zooks from The Butter Battle Book
had major conflicts against each due to many Zooks eating their bread with the butter side down, in
every Zook house and in every Zook town every Zook eats his bread with the butter side down
(Seuss 5). The United States also had a conflict with the Soviet Union, they were both being driven
by a complex interplay of ideological, political, and economic factors (Thomas). The major people
in both The Butter Battle Book and The Cold War had many similarities. The Chief Yookeroo was
the main leader or known as the Yooks president. Chief Yookeroo was the commander for the bread
butter side up which meant all the Yooks reported to his headquarters fort when needed. Similar to
this character was Harry Truman, 33rd president of the Untied States. Harry Truman was given the

The And Italian Campaign Of World War II
The "D–Day Dodgers" was the name given to a group of soldiers who were accused of avoiding the
supposedly harsher battle in Normandy by fighting in Italy. The Italian Campaign of World War II
further proved that Canadians were capable of fighting for themselves. The numerous victories after
the battles in Italy can be attributed to the military tactics used and created during the campaign. The
Italian Campaign derailed German focus from the Normandy and Soviet battles which aided other
European Campaigns. By examining the contributions of the "D–Day Dodgers", the accusation that
those involved in the Italian Campaign were avoiding the war in the rest of Europe was not justified.

Donald Graves' article "To Take Ortona" states, "The army 's commander, Maj. Gen. A. G. L.
McNaughton, wanted the Canadian army to fight as a unified force under Canadian command,
rather than dispersed unit by unit under the command of British generals...The task of taking the
town was assigned to the 1st Canadian Infantry Division." The Battle of Ortona was assigned to be
solely for the Canadian military run by Canadian generals. Because Ortona was heavily fortified, the
Canadians, as with any opposing Allied army, had a tough battle to begin with. The Canadian
military did what they were assigned to do and, through newly created military strategies, captured
the city. The Battle of Ortona further demonstrated the sheer tenacity of the Canadian army, as well
as their refusal to back out of any challenge. The Canadians proved to be a great aid to the Allied
forces and, once again, proved they were not a country to be underestimated. The military tactics
used and created during the Italian Campaign lead to the rest of the victories in Europe. Thomas

Battle Of Berlin Battle Analysis Essay
Define the Subject This battle analysis is to have a better understanding of the reason and lessons
learned from the Battle of Berlin. This battle consisted of the Red Army and the German Army. The
Red Army was led by General Joseph Stalin who had 2.5 million soldiers under his command.
When the battle took place the Red Army had at least three times as much fire power, armored
vehicles, and aircraft than the Germans. The German Army was led by the infamous dictator Fuhrer
Adolf Hitler. He was the leader of the Third Reich. General Gotthard Heinrici led the 9th German
Army and was known for having the most successful defensive strategies against the Red Army. At
the time, the Third Reich consisted of 767,000 in strength, made from 36 divisions. The divisions
were supplemented by police force, Hitler youth boys, and the Volkssturm. General Heinrici had

The German Army was badly depleted. Their amount of equipment and the condition of their
equipment was no comparison to the Soviets. The only remaining forces were Waffen–SS divisions,
Volkssturm, and the Hitler Youth Members. Most of the German forces were untrained and
disorganized, but mostly they were inadequately equipped. Almost all the equipment the Germans
had was in dire need of repair. Luckily, General Dwight D. Eisenhower of the US forces in Europe
made the decision to stop all American advances to Berlin. General Eisenhower did not see an
advantage sending his men to Berlin, where the end result could be detrimental. After all, this would
not benefit the United States. He knew the end result would only benefit the Soviets and the
potential loss of American life would not be worth the risk. General Eisenhower made the call not to
send the US forces to Berlin, that it would not be a military objective. At that point, the troops were
as close as 45 miles from Berlin, when the call was

The Butter Battle Book By Dr. Seuss
War is dangerous, unpredictable, and destructive. World history has been witness. It is responsible
for disease, poverty, famine, epidemics, separation of families, and violence. In addition, war
inevitably results in serious, negative effects on the environment and the economy. The Butter Battle
Book by Dr. Seuss is a symbolic representation of the Cold War which is not a suitable topic to
expose children to n a children 's book.
Dwight D. Eisenhower would not go down in history for his accomplishments during World War II,
but will be remembered for his outstanding abilities to direct during the Cold War. It was his
military skill against the Soviet Union that gained him the title of "strategic architect of America 's

The Berlin Wall stood for almost thirty years. The wall represented post–war repression of human
rights, disrespect, conflict and disharmony. The Cold War threatened the world with the risk of
military conflict, that if it had escalated into nuclear confrontation between powers, there would
exist complete annihilation of human kind. The sad reality is that war could be fought using nuclear
weapons. An atomic bomb is a nuclear weapon that has tremendous destructive potential. "If there is
any hope to be found in nuclear weapons, it of the fact that they have finally made war too terrible
to contemplate" ("The Making of..." 2). The history of the atomic bomb goes back to 1934. An
Italian–American physicist named Enrico Fermi began experimentation on uranium and neutrons.
Not completely convinced of his experiments being a success, two other scientists repealed Fermi 's
work in 1938. Otto Frisch and Lise Meitner proved that the "uranium nuclei in Fermi 's experiment
had been fissioned by the neutrons fired at them" ("Atomic Bomb" 1). The results of these
experiments lead to events of the beginning of the Cold War.
The Chief Yookeroo in Dr. Suess ' "The Butter Battle Book", is the person in charge of the Yook
society; somewhat like a mayor or president. Apparently, when a problem arises, Yooks go to him
for advice. Take for example, as "Granpa" was keeping watch along the wall, a Zook named Van

What Makes D-Day Successful

  • 1. What Makes D-Day Successful What made D–Day successful? What happened on D–Day? What happened after D–Day was over? D–day was successful, full of many historical events, and gained the allies many victories. General Dwight D. Eisenhower gave the order for D–Day because the Germans were weakening from the liberation of France. The Germans position was then revealed causing the D–Day was successful for many reasons. It was a surprising attack on the beaches of Normandy. Over 130,000 landing troops and 23,000 paratroopers all attacked the beach in 1944. The Germans took this attack by surprise, therefore the Germans expected an allied invasion on the North coast of France. The troops managed to secure all 5 allied landing beaches by the end of D–Day. The allied troops were a great advantage to the United States. D–Day was full of many historical events and casualties. The United States troops invaded Normandy on June 6, 1944 which is now known as D–Day or Deliverance day. General Dwight Eisenhower gave the order for D–Day to begin on June 5, 1944. Bad weather forced the battle to be postponed, therefore the battle of D–Day was fought on June 6. The allies had a total of 206,000 casualties by the end of the war. Over 50,000 allied troops and aviators lost their lives in the battle of Normandy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the troops made it to Berlin they found out that Adolf Hitler had killed himself, then on May 8, 1945 the Germans surrendered and World War II was officially over. • 2. The Cuban Missile Crisis: The Beginning Of The Cold War It was a battle of beliefs between leaders of powerful nations. It was a battle between Communism and Democracy. A battle that could have caused a nuclear war......The event that I am referring to is the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Cuban missile crisis was just one of the important events that came in the beginning of the Cold War. Some of the other events that occurred at the beginning of the Cold War were the Space Race, the Berlin Wall, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. We will look at each of these events in some detail, but the main focus is going to be on the Cuban Missile Crisis and why it caused so much tension between the US and the USSR. To start, we will look at the impact these events had on the Citizens of the U.S. and how that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The cold war started in the late 1940s and out of the five important events I have mentioned the Korean War was the first event to occur. Since this was the first event to occur, it most likely caused tension between the USSR and the US but it was not at its highest level. The next event was the Vietnam War. While the war did not officially start until after the Cuban Missile Crisis, there was some tension that started to build between the USSR and the US. However, the tension still was not at its highest point. After this, the the space race occurred and as I mentioned, this did cause some tension between the US and the USSR, but it was not like the tension caused in some of the other events. The final event that occurred before the Cuban Missile crisis was the building of the Berlin wall. The Berlin wall definitely caused tension between the US and the USSR, but still the tension was not at its peak. The final event that occurred was the Cuban Missile Crisis and this is when the tension reached its peak. People will argue that the other four events caused the most tension, however, I think that since ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Berlin Wall Dbq Due to the Berlin wall families were divided, and no physical connection was able to be made from each side. Jobs from the East and West side of Berlin were cut off. The reason given to the East Berliners for putting the wall up was too, put off aggression from the West, even though the wall pointed inward to East German territory. During the wall's 30 year history, unstable and varying reports claim that either 192 or 239 people were killed trying to cross the wall. Interestingly enough, through the wall's 30 year history there were roughly 5000 successful escapes into West Berlin. In source B, it states "it's not a very nice solution, but a wall is a hell of a better than a war". This is John F Kennedy's perspective on the construction of the wall. This wall created tension all over the world when it had been built. Knowing that instead of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As one of the darkest times in history, it symbolised the division of democratic West Berlin and communist East Berlin. In 1963, John F Kennedy visited the city, to give a speech that would be recorded as one the most symbolic and moving speech for years to come. This speech was to show and tell the USSR the determination of the West Berliners to remain how they are, which was to stay non–communist. Source C is about Ronald Reagan's speech at the Berlin wall, on the 12th of June 1987. It was time that the new leader of the USSR realised that changes needed to be made. President Reagan understood that it's time to end this 30 year battle between East Germany and West Germany. in 1998 he announced that the USSR will not come in disturbance any more or at all in Eastern Europe. A year sooner, a few words that not only Germany were waiting for but the whole world were, President Reagan standing near the Berlin wall called out to the Soviet leader saying "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall". • 4. Essay On The Berlin Blockade Dbq Following World War II the alliance between the U.S., Britain and The Soviet Union began to unravel as the USSR pushed for the spread of communism which threatened America and the free world. For the next few decades, America's leaders would need to strategically combat the expansion of the iron curtain and communism. Issues broke out all over the world but the most significant "battles" were that of Berlin, Korea and Cuba. The U.S. contained communism in Berlin by remaining persistent, in Korea by battling, and in Cuba by taking caution. American and British leaders prevented the spread of communism to Berlin by means of patient and strategic actions against the Soviet Union. This strategy is shown in Document B, where it shows a map of divided Germany. The Soviet Union hoped to take Germany under its empire by cutting off all aid from other countries. this became known as the Berlin blockade. the U.S. refused to let the USSR gain Germany and as a result America and Britain airlifted supplies to the people of Berlin. No matter what the weather, they airlifted supplies. this showed the world and the Soviet Union what America was willing to do to stop communism. Following World War II, Cuba experienced a communist revolution with the takeover of Fidel Castro. To make matters worse, America discovered the soviets had been supplying cuba with missiles. This meant that the USSR could bomb the US with nuclear power at any given moment. Document D illustrates the danger as it shows that the missiles range all the way from New York and Washington D.C. to Houston and Miami. The US proceeded cautiously by initiating a quarantine which stopped the flow of soviet ships to Cuba. This hindered the process and allowed the U.S. to eliminate a chance of communistic ... • 5. How Did The Extent To Which Germany Changed After World... Post World War II Germany had survived, only to be divided between Eastern and Western powers. Nowhere was this more obvious than in Berlin. Berlin was divided between the USSR, USA, UK, and France. A hundred miles within the USSR German zone of control, western controlled Berlin adopted policies that were in direct confrontation with Stalin's vision of a communist Germany. The USSR and Allied powers disagreed on Germany's future. The USSR had removed most of Germany's industrial might, but the Allies had wanted Germany to become independent. West German industrial strength was something that Stalin would not accept. After a breakdown in negotiations over a new German constitution and the Allies issuing their own currency in western Berlin, the USSR began a complete blockade of western Berlin. Stalin believed that the Allies could be forced to abandon their hold on Berlin and give the Soviets more legitimacy in their vision of Germany's future. The Allies, however, would not take this lightly. An Allied air transport campaign ensued and would supply Berlin until May 1949, when Stalin lifted the blockade (Text Pg. 954). Even though Stalin lifted the blockade, it just confirmed to the world that a new "war" was being fought with the Soviets. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Allies would form NATO, and promise protection to their members should any of them be attacked. The USSR, with its allies, formed the Warsaw Pact. The Soviet Council of Mutual Assistance was held in 1949, and would lead to the integration of the new Soviet hegemony. Berlin was, in fact, a microcosm of the larger division of Germany. • 6. Analysis Of Tim O ' Brien 's ' Going After The ' Paul in Wonderland: Reality vs. Fantasy in Tim O'Brien's Going After Cacciato On the surface, Tim O'Brien's 1978 novel Going After Cacciato seems like a typical telling of the Vietnam War from the perspective of one of the soldiers as the Third Squad searches for Cacciato, a soldier who has gone AWOL. However, a closer reading would reveal that the vast majority of the novel does not actually take place in reality. This search for Cacciato is a fantasy which takes place in Paul Berlin's head, and the scenarios and even the Vietnamese people who aid the Third Squad are completely fictitious. The terminology 'parts unknown' is frequently used in fairy tales and other stories in the genre of fantasy, especially as a representation of a 'good' place. The fact that they are currently fighting a war in Vietnam, along with knowledge that Vietnam was once a colony of France, juxtaposes Paris with the term 'parts unknown', as Paris can be seen similarly to the soldiers fighting the war as the Emerald City is seen in any of the books in the Oz series. The other chapter that takes place on the battlefield in a permanent reality is chapter 46, the last chapter of the novel. One noticeable comparison between this chapter and the first chapter is that they both share the same name: 'Going After Cacciato'. This shows that they are both parts of the same scene, where Doc tells Corson the news about Cacciato going AWOL. In this regard, the novel seems to have finally come around full–circle as Paul Berlin fully reenters reality after the fantasy of the Third Squad chasing Cacciato across multiple continents. The beginning of the novel has become the end. This is even supported by a summary which occurs early in this chapter. "Her smile when she first saw the...of refuge. Such a fine idea." (325). The main conflicts were the Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Berlin Airlift. This essay is going to explain what containment is and how the US used containment against the Soviets. Containment is when someone is trying to prevent something else from spreading and US used it by preventing the communist government of the Soviet Union from spreading. The US and its allies tried anything they could to contain communism. The Soviet–supported North Korea tried to reunite the US–controlled South Korea by force. The Korean War was called a war but wasn't actually a "war" because war was never declared by either side, so it was actually called a United Nation police action. The imaginary border in the room is a direct result of the tension from the argument. Now of course, this can easily be changed when siblings forgive and forget. In Europe and across the world, the tensions from the Cold War affected the borders of various countries, but the two opposing sides were not quick to agree and "forgive" each other, like siblings do. Overall, the Cold War affected the borders of Europe and other countries across the world by splitting various countries and dividing continents. The Cold War affected the borders of Europe with the Iron Curtain and the splitting of Germany. The Iron Curtain, the border dividing communist eastern Europe from the civilized western Europe, was introduced by Winston Churchill, who served as the prime minister of Europe during the Cold War. The Iron Curtain divided the Soviet Union and its satellite states from open contact with western European and non–Soviet controlled areas. The eastern European countries allied under the Warsaw Pact, which had the Soviet Union as the head state, and the western European countries allied under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, where the United States was the dominant power. • 14. The Tactics Of The German Army The strategy of the German Army was very simple. The Germans knew that the Soviets were making their move into Berlin. The Germans had decided to bunker down and fight to the death for the city of Berlin. The Germans had decided that it would take about two hundred thousand men to defend the capital of Berlin. The two hundred thousand that were to guard Berlin was comprised of mostly women, older men, and younger children. The German army was aware of the amount of Soviet forces that were planning to attack Berlin, and built a strong defensive position in order to counter the Soviet offensive. The Germans constructed trenches, barricades, and other protection measures to ensure their stronghold in Berlin. This became the final preparations for the city and waited for the Soviets advancement. The Soviets knew the key to success in large battles by using major firepower in order to eliminate the enemy. Field Artillery was a key factor in this strategy by providing the massive barrages into the city and taking down supply planes and closing supply routes. The Soviets planned the attack about sixty miles out of Berlin and knew that the German troops were hurt and undermanned so they used this to its advantage. It did not only allow them the start the liberation of Eastern Europe but also reach Berlin to end the reign of the Nazis and Adolf Hitler over Europe. However there are other battles (Stalingrad, the Battle of Britain etc.) that could have been just as significant as D–Day. From the beginning of the Allied planning the collectively realised that it would not be easy for them to land on France and therefor it would be incredibly significant if they were able to. The meticulous preparation made sure that every aspect was perfect: the weather, the location and the 156,000 troops that were going to be used. Previously attempts to break through the line of Nazis on the french coast, there had been an attack at Dieppe which had failed, this showed that they had to get everything right. The allies used various ways to trick Hitler. For example, they bombed the area around Calais to make him think that they would land further north, this meant that the germans were focused on protecting northern France. Instead they disembarked around Normandy which gave them the element of surprise when starting their reconquest of Europe. In his novel, the protagonist soldier Paul Berlin, must maneuver through the harsh elements of Vietnam in pursuit of a simpleton gone A.W.O.L. During his journey, the young soldier faces sickness, brutality, and death. Berlin uses his rich and imaginative inner world to distract himself and attempt to make sense of the grim realities of his physical environment. Weaving fact with fantasy, Tim O'Brien creates an emotionally present narrative of how a vivid imagination was one soldier's method of coping with the confusion of one of the most paradoxical wars of all time. The result is an account of physical and psychological survival and the loss of innocence due to the inner conflict and trauma that combat soldiers endure. The Vietnam War was unsettling to Americans, causing a divide in the nation. Hundreds of thousands of men were drafted to fight overseas. Americans were confused as to why, after a decade of fighting, there was no victory in this lengthy and costly war. Military policy was difficult for Americans to grasp and presidents were unable to put an end to this dragged out war. As more troops were deployed to Vietnam, more Americans protested. It was a time of political and social upheaval, where Americans lost faith in their government. American soldiers were also disenchanted. There was virtually no hope for the city of Berlin defenders against the superior and dominant Red Army, but nevertheless, the city defenders put up a fierce and substantial battle, turning it into the second most ferocious battle following the Battle of Stalingrad. But Stalin's orders to launch an offensive in the midst of all the suffering in November 1942 proved decisive. The Soviet troops struck the Nazi's flanks and then attacked them from behind (Games 34). By attacking using the flank strategy, the Soviet troops ensured a resonant win. The Cold War started as most wars do, two sides disagreeing with each other. In this case one side wanted to stop the spread of communism and the other side wanted them to butt out. What happens when both sides have strong opinions and potentially dangerous ideas? It just adds more fuel to the fire. The two sides specifically were the USA and the USSR. Needless to say the USA was against communism and the USSR wasn't. The most appropriate place to start explaining how the Cold War began is to explain how and where it started. Even countries who had nuclear bombs but didn't threaten to use them were considered a very possible threat. Between the USSR and the USA it was like walking on very thin ice. The nuclear buildup was called the balance of terror (Doc. #7). Having an abundance of nuclear weapons insured that the balance of terror was kept. The Cuban Missile Crisis contributed to this fear. When the Cuban Missile Crisis progressed the USA began to make demands. The USA demanded that they must secure the withdrawal of the missiles (Doc. #8). Cuba persisted that they were just for defensive. They promised they would remove them if the USA swore not to attack (Doc. #9). Another form of weapon is proxy wars. Proxy wars, another term for substitute war, where smaller countries fought on their behalf. The USSR never fought each other directly, but they supported other opposing sides in actual violent conflicts in the world. The Vietnam and Korean wars are examples of this. The Battle of Ortona was assigned to be solely for the Canadian military run by Canadian generals.
