Athletic Training Research Paper
This quote was stated by Aleister Crowley, an English occultist and poet. This quote is explaining
the importance athletic training, even for yoga. Athletic training is practiced by athletic trainers,
they are health care specialists who collaborate with physicians to enhance activity and participation
of patients and clients. Athletic training integrates the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of
emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and
disabilities. (NATA, Par. 1)
Athletic training is important in the sports industry because without it, athletes with injuries could
possibly be treated wrong and it could cause further injury. It is also important because athletic

The National Athletic Training Association adopted a code of ethics a year after establishing their
journal of scholarly research and discourse. The plan of the NATA was to bring athletic training into
the mainstream of sports medicine, which noticeably worked. At a district meeting in Atlanta on
December 1st, 1973, the NATA announced representatives to be present at special events such as the
Olympics. On December 1st, 1972, the first female athletic trainer joined the athletic training world.
Her name is Kristine Freeman and she worked at the University of Florida. Freeman worked with
the women's sports teams and also helped with the men's athletic teams every so often. Kristine's
father worked for Cramer products, a popular brand of athletic products that are used in the athletic
industry. Mimi Porter, Patricia "Trish" Darlington, and Rita DeDamio are also big names in athletic
training. They accomplished things no female has done before, such as attending committee
meetings. The University of Tennessee–Knoxville made a full–time position for athletic training in
the women's athletic department in 1978. (Time Toast, Par 1.) Athletic training did not become an
allied occupation until 1991. It became harder to get certified as an athletic trainer in 2004. This was
when everyone that wanted to become a certified athletic trainer had to graduate from an accredited
athletic training program to be able to take the certification exam to become a certified athletic
trainer. (Time Toast, Par

I Love Florida Gulf Coast University
Part A: Desired Occupation
Florida Gulf Coast University: Vice President for Advancement & Executive Director of Foundation
Between my freshman and sophomore year of college I completed a 450 hour internship at All
Children's Hospital. This internship although it was mainly administrative showed me a side of
hospitals that most people don't see. I was able to see the behind–the–scenes of fundraising and
public relations. I had first hand exposure to the world of fundraising for an organization that relies
on fundraising. Two years later completed my bachelors of science in general business management.
I am currently pursuing my masters in business administration and focusing in marketing. I feel that
through marketing I can combine both public relations and fundraising. Ever since I was little I
wanted to find a career that let me do what I love and find a way to help people. While waiting to
hear about my acceptance into the MBA program at FGCU I applied to a graduate assistant position
within FGCU's University Advancement department. As a graduate student this was the dream
position I had been looking for. It was the opportunity I had been looking for that would allow me to
use the skills I had gained by volunteering at All Children's Hospital. The old saying, "how do you
get a job without experience, how do you get experience without a job" does have an answer; it's
volunteering.
While working for FGCU Alumni Relations within FGCU University Advancement I have had

Should Student Athletes Receive Compensation for Upholding...
Student athletes entertain fans at their local resident arena, which generated five million and six
hundred thousand dollars in ticket sell in 2012 (National College Athletic Association). This is not
fair to student athletes that are solely responsibility for contributing to these financial statistics.
Student athletes are leaders in the classrooms and on the field. Student athletes uphold the standards
requirement by the NCAA to maintain their eligible to play sports. As leader on the field and the
classroom, they possess a high standard of moral and behavior by not cheating, obeying the rules
and regulations of their college and university. Student athletes are held to a higher standard than
regular students. A regular student can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The alumni banquet often celebrates after a big game or major victories against rival opponents.
Student athletes have to participate or make guest appearances to help make money for their schools
athletic programs. There is a lot of money being exchange between the alumni and the school, and
athletes can easily make themselves eligible by accepting boosters' funds; so, if athletes are
mandated to attend banquets then they should be able receive funds for participating at these
banquets.

Personal Narrative: My Interview With An Athletic Director
When it comes to the sports industry, there are many different jobs within organizations and
businesses. Prior to interviewing someone, I did a large amount of research on jobs within the
NCAA. My ideal interview would have been with the athletic director for the University of Florida,
because my goal is to one day become an athletic director. However, Jeremy Foley is a very busy
man and was not available to meet with me. Therefore, I interviewed who I believe to be the next
best person. I interviewed the coordinator of volleyball operations for the University of Florida
Gators, Alesha Busch. Although Alesha does not deal directly with the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA), she abides by the organizations rules and deals with them through the
University Athletic Association (UAA). The reason I chose to interview ... Show more content on

I learned that in order to discuss anything with the NCAA, athletic programs must first go through
the UAA. Although I did not get to interview an athletic director, Alesha performs similar tasks that
an athletic director would. It is similar in the sense that Alesha directs a volleyball program, rather
than multiple programs. One of the first questions I asked Alesha was, "What was the most
surprising part of this job?" She then responded with, "the most surprising thing is the fact that I am
in connection with a bunch of different people." She then further went on stating, "when they say I
am the coordinator, I really am." Alesha said that she meets monthly with compliance, the university
business office, and equipment companies to discuss different factors throughout the program. The
hard work that Alesha does is what makes Florida Gator volleyball possible. Alesha's job really
intrigues me because my ultimate goal in life is to help other people, especially those in

Should Cheerleading be Considered a Sport? What comes to mind when you think of cheerleading?
It is not a sport right? Many people in the world believe cheerleading is not a sport and it is just a
bunch of chanting and cheering but it is not just that. In today's world cheerleading is not well
recognized and considered as a sport, but it is more than that. It takes more than cheering and
chanting to compete as a cheerleader . Here is why I think cheerleading should be considered a
sport, because it takes athleticism, persistence, and courage too compete as a cheerleader. What does
to take to be considered a sport? According to the Oxford English Dictionary a sport is a, "Sense
relating to play, pleasure, or entertainment" (Oxford English Dictionary). Alyssa Roengik a former
cheerleader of University of Florida argues that cheerleading is not ... Show more content on

How is it not a sport if it is basically everything explained in the definition of the Oxford English
Dictionary? Roengik stated how, "Cheerleaders are athletics. College cheerleading was as physically
demanding and mentally challenging as any activity" (Roengik). Competitive cheerleading is as
challenging as any other sports team, because you compete with other teams, and you have a certain
time to do a routine. Roengik definitely states how physically demanding and mentally challenging
cheerleading is, but it is the same thing with football, volleyball and so many other teams out there
that considered competition. Roengik also states, "But cheerleading is not a sport" (Roegnik). At the
same time people would agree and disagree with her, I say this because cheering on another team is

College Athletes Are Being Consumed By The World Of...
Americans have become consumed by the world of college athletics. This excitement can be seen all
around us. Here at the University of Florida, we experience the energy of division I college sports
every day. Whether we choose to participate on football game days, wear Gator athletic apparel, or
make conversation every day revolving around topics such as "Tebow's non–existent NFL career" or
"that one basketball player that kept us out of the championship", the star athletes of our universities
become household names across the country. Although it seems to be a life of fame and fortune for
these individuals that live the life of a star student athlete, it comes at a cost. Today, college athletes
are exploited because of the lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This information was found in a study conducted by the National College Players Association
entitled "The Price of Poverty in Big Time College Sport" where it was found that 86% of players
were living below the federal poverty line. Meanwhile, the players are not earning the education that
will land them decent or high paying jobs if there may be the case of not going pro, or receiving an
injury making them ineligible to play. Legally, players are fighting for a more secure representation
and a better system of financial security. Next, although the opposing argument is that the athlete
receives a free education, this has shown to not always be true. With a "work week" longer than the
national average (43.3 hours) how can we say that they receive a free education? In fact, I would
argue that they are employees of the school they attend. Also, schools are not producing scholars,
they are producing a group of athletes that have about a 2% chance of getting drafted, and an even
larger group that either do not graduate, or end up dropping out of school do to an injury, stress, etc.
This is also the moment when the racial factor becomes an issue. In "Taboo: Why Black Athletes

The Importance Of Physical Activity
This paper begins with the exploration into whether or not physical activities can be traced back to
the classroom. Participating in sports, represents a form of physical activity. By the same token,
participating in classroom activities and completing educational objectives represents performing
mental activity. What might not be so common is that physical activity actually produces increased
brain functionality (Florida National University, 2014). An article published by the Florida National
University (2014), elaborates that individuals who consistently engage in physical activity
regardless of age group or gender tend to experience better overall health, leading to increased
mental capabilities and cognitive functions (Florida National University, 2014). Given this
information, it can be further expanded that the demands of participating in sports activities such as,
games and practice, which can be considered physical activity, relate back to increased mental
performance that has the potential to emerge in the classroom (Florida National University, 2014).
To further support the view that physical activity increases brain functionality a series of studies and
research have been performed. According to Ratey and Hagerman (2008), there is a correlation
between physical activity and brain functionality (Ratey & Hagerman, 2008). The authors of this
book, search for the answers provided by studies and research to the question of how physical
activities impact grades.

Black Athletes' Graduation Rates Weak
Major collegiate athletics programs are able to generate millions of dollars for their institutions, but
are not able to show any evidence of successfully graduating their black male athletes that
contribute to their success in generating those millions of dollars. These universities in turn, are
failing these student athletes whom were promised that they would nurture them intellectually as
well as athletically. A four year report published by the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate
School of Education presents statistics that shows that the six major sports conferences in the
NCAA (ACC, Big Ten, Big East, Big 12, SEC, Pac 12) have weak graduation rates for male African
American Student athletes. Jessica Anderson of the associated ... Show more content on

The journal cites the Center for the Study of Athletics that showed that, "95 percent of basketball
and football players indicated that earning a college degree was important to them. Unfortunately,
one third of these same student athletes earned a GPA of less than 2.0, which severely limits the
chances of earning a college degree" (Gatson–Gayles). Not only is this one third of students at risk
of not earning a college degree, but the entire group as a whole might not even be successful post
college even if they do graduate with a college degree. The reason for this is because a majority of
African American male student athletes choose majors and degrees that do not have much value for
them personally and can do little to help them be financially secure. Lois Elfman of the article Are
Minority Football Players Being Pushed into Pointless Majors? interviewed Professor Jeffrey

College Athletes: A Case Study
It's the only time of year when one shot can make or break a team's season. It's the only time of year
when athletes can be magnified into stars or heros. Millions of eyes witness every heart–breaking
upset and every game–saving buzzer beater. It's March and it's madness. The National College
Athletics Association (NCAA) makes "$6 billion annually and $1 billion just off of the men's
basketball tournament" (USNEWS). In 2013, the Louisville Cardinals faced the Duke Blue Devils
in the Mid–West Regional Championship. Louisville, the tournament's one seed, looked to be
moving on to the final four when a freak accident slowed everything. Late in the game, sophomore
Kevin Ware of the Cardinals leaped to contest a 3 point shot. While everyone in ... Show more

Between practice, working out, and games, "players on top teams in Division 1 basketball and
football spend an average 43.3 hours a week perfecting their game" (Huffington). Universities think
of these players as students, instead of employees or as amateurs, instead of professionals. It would
be very difficult to work a part–time job while having grades to keep up and putting nearly all of
your time into sports. National champ, Shabazz Napier, talked of going to bed hungry in an
interview while being potentially worth millions of dollars. His game winning shots made someone
very wealthy while he slept with an empty stomach. There was no way for him to hold a job with all
of the traveling and time consumed in Division 1 basketball. Another prime example of sports being
a full time job for athletes is Florida State Seminole, Jameis Winston. He is one of few that are
talented enough to perform well in 2 Division 1 sports. A week after winning his national
championship as quarterback of the football team, Winston recorded a win on the mound after
saving a game for his baseball team. Jameis Winston is a key asset to the Seminoles recent success
and "has a net worth of 32 million" (Celebrity Glory), but didn't make a penny in his 2 years at
Florida State. Soon he will be drafted into the NFL and will sign a contract promising the millions

Should College Athletes Be Paid?
There is a debate on whether college athletes should be paid. It has been known that the fewer
scholarships given to student–athletes increase their competiveness on the field, which shows us that
keeping money away from student–athletes makes them more competitive (Baird 2). There is also a
case that student–athletes are being robbed because they are not receiving compensation for their
own likeness (Holthaugh JR. 1). Television networks are paying millions for the rights to show big
games on TV, which shows us that student–athletes are the entertainers with no compensation
(Bowen 1). Allen Sack informs us that there have been cases where some athletes in the NCAA get
injured before they finish their career and don't make it to the pros due to the loss of their
scholarship, which shows us that the NCAA is exploiting student–athletes Sack 2).The NCAA
should require schools to pay for sports–related injuries in any serious injury, because it can
determine if they will make it to the NFL (Huma 1). Athletes are accepting illegal pay, because they
see the universities making all of the money, which shows us that poor student–athletes are in need
of compensation (Porto 1). Adrian Peterson thinks that college athletes should be paid because he
fought through injuries and did not make a penny from his years at Oklahoma, which shows us that
student–athletes who make it to the NFL have injuries that they are fighting through during the
combine (Haislop 2). Joe Theisman thinks that

Summary: Should Student Athletes Be Paid
How Much More Do You Want?
Every year at the beginning of the college football and basketball seasons the same intense debate
comes up: should student athletes be compensated for their work. The Chronicle of Higher
Education recently estimated that college athletics is a $10–billion marketplace (Suggs). That is
$500–million more than Major League Baseball (MLB) (Brown), and $2–billion shy of the National
Football League (NFL) (Belzer). It's quite obvious college sports are making money. However,
according to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules, "You are not eligible for
participation in a sport if you have ever: taken pay, or the promise of pay, for competing in that
sport" (NCAA Regulations). While college sports, particularly football, have brought in huge
amounts of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hiring lawyers, private investigators, and paying legal fees would bankrupt a non–student athlete. If
the universities are willing to pay out all of this money to protect their star athlete how much more
should they give? Some may argue that paying a student athlete will make college sports more
competitive. If the NCAA paid its athletes, the students would not have to add extra stress worrying
about where they will get their money from. If students did not have to worry about their finances,
they could spend more time focusing on their game and their classes (Anderson). There is no
evidence provided that paying a student athlete will make them better at their sport. Let alone any
evidence paying them will make them a better student in the classroom.
What people tend to forget is the debate for compensation only comes up during the football and
men's basketball seasons. Why doesn't the debate come up during the baseball and softball seasons?
Or during the swimming and gymnastics seasons? Is it because football and men's basketball make

Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) brings in billions of dollars yearly through their respected
institutions. As collegiate sports have dominated the American entertainment industry, the question

the NCAA to date. Collegiate athletes that are under ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the Florida State football team played in the 2013 National Championship, it occurred on a

So, all 85 players that traveled to this game missed the first two days of the spring semester, which
seem to be the most important. To argue that education is always put first it is absolutely incorrect.
If education was the priority, the National Championship would not be played on a Monday night,
subjecting almost ninety athletes to already start their next semester off behind every other student.

American Indian Mascots Racist Analysis
To reach a compromise, a person must be able argue effectively, but also not ignite or be hostile
towards the opposing arguer. An argument is an exchange of diverging or opposite views but it does
not need to be a belligerent debate because it leads to a verbal stalemate. The Rogerian Method,
derived from psychologist, Carl Rogers, is a way for two parties to peacefully argue to avoid an
adversarial approach. An example of effective use of the Rogerian Method is in "Is The Use of
American Indian Mascots Racist?," written by Jane Willy discussing that the use of Native
American tribe names is not meant to be condescending or demeaning. The first part of the Rogerian

clearly derogatory names (Willy, 2008). These racist nick names directly relate and is mentioned
with hostility because they were originated from a time in which their ethnicity was seen as, but in
correctly, inferior. Willy also provide exceptions, such as the "'Fighting Irish'" and the "Yankees"
(Willy, 2008). No one has ever mentioned these two examples or has stated it is "hurtful" (Willy,
2008). The author provides another strong example which is continuously argued daily. African–
Americans are visually and physically black, hence the name "'Negro,'" which from the "Latin root,"
means "'black'", but if African–Americans prefer not to be called by "'Negro'" then they shouldn't
(Willy, 2008). It is the people of the ethnicity who possess the authority to choose what they wish to
be recognized by. The group of Seminoles in Florida is "supporting" Florida State University's use
of their tribe name as the university's team name, but the Seminoles located in Oklahoma was
against this (Willy, 2008). The author uses this context to show that the opponent's position may not
be valid by showing that it is not a matter of racism, but a matter of social allowance of these names.

The Ban On Student Athlete Compensation
Right now the ban on student–athlete compensation is insufficient and is not doing the student–
athlete any good. Student–athletes should be paid for their efforts no matter what the rule has always
been. These athletes hard work is being taken advantage of by the people around them. A change to
a competitive labor market with less restrictions on student–athlete compensation might be a
necessity (Sanderson and Siegfried). In 2013 a man by the name of Jay Bilas, an ESPN basketball
analyst, logged onto a website called ShopNCAASports.com. When he logged on to this website he
searched for some of the most popular names of the 2013 collegiate sports period. After Bilas found

As a result of this, the athletic departments and coaches are telling players exactly what to do
outside of the classroom, and could possibly give that player no freedom to argue. These are acts
that would not occur if the general labor laws were enforced (Sanderson and Siegfried). The Ninth
Circuit Court of Appeals decides that the NCAA's payment rules do not allow college athletes to
obtain the money they deserve. The court also ruled that the antitrust law states that the NCAA
allows the school to only pay for the athlete's tuition. A New Orleans business reporter did an article
over a basketball player, named Ed O'Bannon, who believed that he was being robbed of money that
he rightfully deserved. In 2009, O'Bannon, who played basketball for the University in California at
Los Angeles, sued the National Collegiate American Association for using his name and image on
television and in video games. A group of other students joined O'Bannon in trying to fight the
NCAA. They challenged that the amateurism rules were not fair to athletes because other people
were profiting off of their name and actions. The NCAA then stated that the players signed a waiver
stating the NCAA would be allowed to use the player's name and image. O'Bannon's legal team then
argued that the players are forced to sign that waiver in order to play college sports ("Federal
Appeals"). The NCAA came back with the argument that if they paid the

The Problems With Paying College Players
Colleges are infamous for pouring millions upon millions of dollars into their sports programs,
except of course, when it comes to paying athletes. Because college athletes are not allowed to be
paid in accordance to federal law while they simultaneously create large sums of revenue, there has
been a heated debate that Kristi Dosh and Mark Cassell readily provide contrasting evidence for. In
Dosh's article, "The Problems with Paying College Players," she argues that it would not be fair to
pay college players because many college sports programs are already indebted to their school, and
if some schools couldn't afford to pay their players, the well–funded schools would be at an
unprecedented advantage. To contrast, Cassell's "College Athletes Should be Able to Negotiate
Compensation," takes the viewpoint defending college athletes' pay because the athletes that bring
in the most revenue, the star players, are cheated out of compensation in a way that unrightfully
benefits those in charge. Although Dosh makes clear points about problems with the financial
realities of paying players, Cassell makes the more convincing argument because he uses effective
evidence to highlight the injustices of not paying athletes.
After attending a conference at which a very intellectual attorney contradicted himself over the issue
of whether or not college athletes should or should not be paid, Dosh asks "where is the money
going to come from?" Then, argues that if you let athletes get paid for

Why Is Ferpa Important
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, commonly referred to as FERPA, is a federal law
overseen by the Family Policy Compliance Office, operated by the United States Department of
Education. Under this law, students' academic records are protected from public disclosure, meaning
they cannot be shared by application of public records requests. While the rights of FERPA are
clearly spelled out in the U.S. Constitution, academic institutions often misuse the law. In order for
student records not to be subject to public disclosure, the information contained in the records must
apply to a student directly. If there is a record pertaining to another matter that is being requested

If an open records request is denied, the agency withholding the record must justify their decision
by pointing out a law being violated through the request. College records are popular among the
public, and are often denied because a school says the requested information disobeys a FERPA law,
which is often untrue and used as a cover up for a larger issue. The Student Press Law Center, or
SPLC, is an organization committed to informing high school and college journalists about rights
protected under the First Amendment. The SPLC believes FERPA needs to be taken apart and
amended to stop schools from using "educational records" as a reason to deny public records
requests, in order to hide unrestricted public documents. One recent FERPA misuse case, uncovered
by SPLC's "FERPA Fact" account, was at the University of Alabama. Fraternity members at the
school were charged after being blamed for beating another student, and while their names were
released, the name of the fraternity they belong to remains a mystery. The fraternity's name has yet

Should College Athletes Be Paid?
Recently, one of the most prominent and controversial topics in sports is whether college athletes
should or should not be paid to play. Many experts tend to argue that college athletes should not be
paid to play in schools. I disagree with this argument due to various reasons. A key source of income
that is seen to exist in different institutions is college athletics. It largely attracts many students into
institutions. Moreover, many universities worldwide depend on athletes in order to produce as well
as maintain the institution's name and popularity. Therefore, college athletes play a significant role
towards promoting their schools in achieving their different goals such as an adequate income
acquisition. Thus, my question is, why do college athletes not get paid? Some people argue that
college athletes should not be paid since they receive their education through scholarships. It is quite
evident that scholarship money provided to these college athletes is not enough to cater for all their
needs to satisfy. On the contrary, college athletes tend to generate enough income for the
institutions. Therefore, there is a feeling that the institutions, in one way or another owe the athletes
a little more than scholarships. Colleges should also appreciate their athletes by not only giving
them scholarships, but also paying them. This means that they should be given the small payment
for their contribution in offering services to the institution. Indeed, college athletes

Sickle Cell Essay
Normal red blood cells are shaped like discs and look like donuts with no hole in the middle. They
are rich in hemoglobin and carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Sickle cell anemia is
a disease in which the red blood cells become sickle shaped, or shaped like a crescent. Sickle cells
also become sticky and tend to block the blood flow to the limbs and organs ("What is Sickle Cell
Anemia?"). People who have sickle cell trait (SCT) do not have the disease, but instead are carriers
of it. Most people who have SCT live their lives completely symptom free, however there are some
complications that are associated with sickle cell trait. People who have the trait must be careful
when they are completing strenuous exercise and when dehydrated. These cases, in extreme form,
can lead to complications of sickle cell disease, and even death ("What You Should Know About the
Sickle Cell Trait").
Athletes with the sickle cell trait must be careful when exercising because their blood cells may start
to sickle. According to CBSSports, "It is known that sickle cell trait has been the leading cause of
non–traumatic deaths among Division I college football players since 2000." Football players in
Division I programs, typically in southern states, are especially at risk if they have the sickle cell
trait. This is because during preseason, when the temperatures are still well above the 80 degree
mark, athletes tend to become more dehydrates, and the toll on their bodies is

Athletic Director
Overview
An athletic director (commonly "athletics director" or "AD") is an administrator at many american
colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, who oversees the
work of coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic programs
(ehow.com). They are in charge of an athletic department at a high school, college or university and
at some colleges, the athletic director may hold academic rank. They are usually considered to be
full–time administrators instead of, full time faculty members.
Although technically in charge of all of the coaches, they are often far beyond well–compensated
and also less famous, with few having their own television and radio ... Show more content on

At the major college level, some of these responsibilities may be delegated but the athletic director
will still oversee these areas. Athletic directors work with coaches to determine scheduling of games
and practices. Athletic directors also work with conferences and leagues on scheduling and other
issues, like post–season play.
Within a program, decisions may have to be made on how to allocate time for a field, court, or
weight room. The athletic director often provides guidance for coaches. At the major college level,
the hiring of coaches is a key responsibility for athletic directors that can be subject to public
scrutiny (careerpaths.com). Athletic directors work with coaches and perhaps a travel coordinator to
plan trips. They also coordinate officials and umpires at games and budget for their pay. Typically
athletic directors file reports on the status of each team and its successes and shortcomings. They
may mediate any disputes between athletes and coaches or between coaches.
Athletic Director Job Description
Athletic directors at the high school level work with other school administrators to assure student
athletes are academically eligible for a given sport. Athletic directors carry out this responsibility at
the college level as well. At the college level, they also typically work with a compliance officer to
make sure a program is

College Athletes Should Not Be Paid
College Athletes Should Not Be Paid Waking up before the sunrise is a daily routine. Early morning
film sessions, class, then practice, which dominates the day. There are few moments in between for
food and socializing, but the life of a student athlete is anything but ordinary. Sleep, eat, practice
and school are all an athlete knows, and with the pressures of campus life it becomes even more
difficult. No time for much of anything, let alone getting a job. Like most students, these athletes
need money, but do not have a spare second to work. Without any source of income, athletes are put
at a major disadvantage. Their full–time job is athletics, in addition to rigorous college–level
courses. The possibility of becoming a professional and making millions becomes very appealing.
This course of action leads to student athletes making money illegally, dropping out of school, or
leaving school early without a degree to try and make it professionally.

Contradiction In College Football
The "contradiction at the heart of big–time college football," as Michael Oriard describes it, is the
competing demands of marketing and education. The 1890s proved to university administrators that
there was an enormous market for collegiate football, which postulated opportunities for university
building. Since this ubiquitous realization, there has coincided this blatant, yet unchanging
contradiction that academic institutions are permitted to profit off of the services provided by its
student–athletes while the athletes must idly accept that they are amateurs, donating their efforts to
their respective schools. The schools then direct this revenue toward strengthening their athletic
departments, and thus continues this seemingly endless growth of big–time college sports, all while
athletes remain uncompensated and academics continue to take a backseat. The term
"extracurricular activity" is defined as follows; "unpaid activities not pertaining to ordinary school
classes" (Won). The adjective "commercial" is defined as "viewed with regard to profit" (Merriam–
Webster). It is absurd to think that college football can be both a commercial spectacle and an
extracurricular activity. "Extracurricular" implies that education comes before sports, however this
idea is misconceived. After World War II, the College of William and Mary wanted to elevate its
football program to national recognition, so the school altered transcripts of incoming high school
students making

Florida Recruiting Case Study
Florida Recruiting: Making Florida fun again
In a few weeks, the Athletic Director for the University of Florida, Scott Stricklin, will announce the
new head football coach for the Gators. One huge focal area for Stricklin is finding a coach that will
implement an offensive scheme that matches the Gators' need.
The certain type of offense that many are calling for in Gainesville is the spread option philosophy,
while also running run/pass option attacks (once seen under Urban Meyer). Currently, the Gators'
2018 recruiting class has pieces that fit the mold to these sorts of schemes.

Whoever the next head coach is for the Gators, they will inherit a plethora of talent on the offensive
of the ball. As it stands, they will also likely walk into one of the best recruiting classes of the 2018
cycle, highlighted by 4–star quarterback Matt Corral. Corral has reiterated multiple times that he is
committed to the Florida Gators and will be early–enrolling despite the coaching changes.
From a recruiting standpoint, Corral is a west–coast type of prospect that can arrive in Gainesville
and compete day one at the quarterback positions. The different skillset he will provide for this
position group is something the unit has been missing for quite some time. The ability to extend
plays, throw on the run, and move the chains with his legs separates Corral from many quarterbacks
in this class. He has a legitimate opportunity to start game one next season, with the inadequate play
Florida has seen from multiple quarterbacks this season. For a spread offensive scheme, Corral is
the perfect fit.
But, along with Corral, the next coach will need to get wide receiver prospects Jacob Copeland and
Jamarr Chase to stay firm with their commitments to the Gators #AllBite18 class. Both players
possess unbelievable athletic ability that can piece together this broken offense. Their abilities to
reel in tough catches, fool defenders in their route tree, and their deep ball threat are all pieces this

Ncaa Pros And Cons
The NCAA recognizes one of its core values as "the pursuit of excellence in both academics and
athletics" (NCAA Core Values). This shows that the NCAA is looking to benefit the students at all
costs. They want to include the coaching staff of universities in this core value, but much confusion
has been found between the NCAA and university athletic staff. This confusion has resulted in a
tension and conflict leading to a discussion on the steps of resolution that can be taken to put this
core value back into sights for both coaching staff and the NCAA.
To begin, the NCAA spends their time creating rules but fails to enforce them. One such rule
includes the twenty–hour rule that is continuously violated by coaches. Ray Joseph of Marist

The NCAA gives out two billion seven hundred thousand dollars in scholarships that can be gifted
to more than one hundred fifty thousand student–athletes (Scholarships). Although this is the case,
most student–athletes do not choose to compete professionally, but instead benefit from the
education they are receiving. Additionally, it may seem controversial that the "coaches decide who
receives a scholarship, the scholarship amount and whether it will be renewed" rather than the
NCAA who is providing the money for the scholarships (Scholarships). Furthermore, many students
can fit one coach's ideals for the team and will be completely wrong for another coach's. This being
said coaches are constantly being added and removed. For example, over the past fifteen years
Missouri University has had seventeen changes to the coaching staff while Florida has had sixty–
five changes to the coaching staff (SEC Coaching Turnover Rates From Past 15 Years are
Staggering). Since coaches have the most authority, many players are having their scholarships
rescinded due to a change in the coaching staff. For example, Doug Segrest, a writer for the
Birmingham News, interviewed Grayson Mullins, football player for Notre Dame, who was moved
from his original position as a quarterback to a wide receiver when Lou Holtz, Coach for Notre
Dame, was replaced by Steve Spurrier, who eventually rescinded Mullins scholarship because he
did not fit the ideal model (Segrest). This demonstrates, that scholarships are constantly held over a
players' head as to perform not only at the best of their ability but to the coaches' idealistic reality as
well. Overall, scholarships pose a large issue in college athletics and while they do provide
education to students that are harming in the long run as students are constantly at risk to lose them

The Current Position Of Intercollegiate Athletics
Executive Summary The current position of intercollegiate athletics in the United States is a
peculiar one when compared to most any other country in the world. In no other nation will one find
varsity intercollegiate athletics programs that pay their athletes to attend the school. Therefore, in no
other country will one find quite as much debate as to whether or not these athletics programs
should continue to be affiliated with the colleges and universities they represent, particularly if the
primary objective of colleges and universities is to educate their students (Beyer, 2000). Moreover,
the role of amateurism and whether or not student–athletes should be paid is a controversial issue
among college sport fans and scholars in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The outcome of the case provided certain key overviews with the relationship between student–
athletes and universities. First, student–athletes have no contract to hire and grant–aid does not
make individuals employees of a university (Rafferty, 1983). In addition, student–athletes are
prohibited from accepting pay for sports, and financial aid is not pay or income so players are not
entitled to worker's compensations (Rafferty, 1983). Since the formation of the NCAA, student
athletes have never been considered employees. The NCAA has developed ways to make money off
student–athletes and not pay them. For instance, Walter Byers the first executive director of the
NCAA, stated "the NCAA reserves the right to make money off the names, likeness, and images of
athletes, preventing others from doing so" (Comeaux, 2015, p. 290). This can be highlighted in the
NCAA concept of "amateurism." Amateurism provides rules to ensure that student–athletes' priority
is education (NCAA, 2015). Furthermore, "student–athletes are amateurs, and they will be protected
from exploitation by professional and commercial enterprises" (NCAA, 2015, para. 4). The
implication of "amateurism" benefits the NCAA, while it exploits student–athletes. Exploitation can
be seen when the NCAA makes revenue off players' images, and the players have no rights or
control over their images (Kahn, 2007). When

Student Athlete Potential
Behind every teacher is a student, behind every coach is an athlete, and behind every student–athlete
is potential. There have been numerous ongoing debates as to what that student–athlete potential is.
For an athlete, some suggest that the potential is really a path to struggling academically, others
point to potential as a road to increased academic achievements. To make clear, potential is defined
by the Merriam–Webster Dictionary as, "Existing in possibility; capable of development into
actuality." (Merriam–Webster, n.d. para. 1). It can be concluded that potential equals what is
conceivable, which might very well be deemed struggles or achievements. It is of the belief that the

Softball Recruitment Strategies
As the level of competition increases among children, they begin developing their skills at a
younger age. Recruits attend camps, showcases, home run derbies, and receive private instruction.
Continually, parents think they must spend thousands of dollars for their child to play on a highly
competitive travel ball team. Consequently, colleges begin recruiting at an earlier age despite the
substantial amount of growth and change that occurs during the teen years. Therefore, in today's
world of softball, if a player has not verbally committed to a school by the time they are a
sophomore in high school, numerous division one spots have been filled and they are most likely

Sports : Sports And Sports
Unlike professional sports, college sports developed rather violently without regard from university
officials. Prior to 1850, there was no such thing as intercollegiate sports. University officials knew
there was a yearn for physical release demanded by the student body, so their way of dealing with
this epidemic was through manual labor. They had students either farming or clearing forms of
debris from college grounds. University officials saw this as a positive because it gave the students
physical activity which also benefited them financially because there was no money being put into
these activities. The way the students dealt with this was, they created their own contests or events,
which was known as "class rushes". These rushes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

college sports were established and have changed through the years to what we understand it to be

Factors that contributed to the change in college sports from then to what we know about it now
include; financial greed, social and cultural pressures, and the constant battle with academics. Like
most other businesses or companies, the biggest issue facing collegiate sports right now is financial

University Athletic Association Case Summary
1. The first interesting fact that Mr. Howard presented to the class during his presentation was the
price of a master plan for the University Athletic Association and its renderings of facility upgrades.
I was shocked to learn that a master plan with renderings of 7 to 8 facility upgrades from an
architecture costs $90,000. Nevertheless, the detail of each of the rendering to buildings such as: the
football, baseball, softball stadiums and among others show that the University is taking steps to
further improve the fan experience within the stadiums that will seamlessly correlate with all of
UF's championship winning teams. However, to get great results you have to spend the money to
receive the outcome you want.
2. The second interesting fact that was presented today is also based on the financial aspect of
renovation and building new sports facilities on UF's campus. In Mr. Howard's presentation, he
mentioned that the UAA is planning to build a new football facility and cafeteria that will benefit all

Although it may seem like college athletes should earn an income for their games, they have many
benefits that come along with playing for college sports. College athletic programs cannot afford to
pay all athletes that play. It's true that an abundant amount of money comes in, but there is just as

I think that in order to be a successful athletic director, one needs to keep the functional areas of
sport management in mind. These four areas include: planning, organizing, leading, and evaluating
(Masteralexis, Barr, & Hums, 2015). The first aspect of planning is something that athletic directors'
need to be very good at doing. An athletic director needs to have both short and long term goals. If I
were to become an athletic director, I would want to make sure all of the student athletes received
the proper tools to succeed both on and off the court. I would make sure each student athlete,
scholarship and non–scholarship, had a tutor available to them at all times. I know that the
University of Florida allows each athlete to have a tutor, however, it is optional. The reason that it is
optional is because it is something that is enforced by the coaches. Therefore, I would make it a
university athletic department policy that all coaches must force their student athletes to use a tutor.
I would want to make sure each athlete used their tutor to their advantage so they could be aware of
what was going on in the classroom. This would also allow students to not be stressed about their
studies, and that way they have a proper balance between their sport and education. It is a huge goal
of the NCAA for their students to have a proper balance in life, therefore I think through this plan I
could implement that balance. In order to make this possible

Not to mention that practice is a requirement; if somebody misses too many practices, there's a high
chance they will get kicked off the team. The equivalent to a job someone could say that they are
being fired. Along with attempting to be the best at the sport an athlete performs, comes the struggle
of maintaining a high enough grade point average to actually play. This means adding on another
10–20 hours a week of studying, not to mention the time spent in class. The usual college football
team, requires a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average. Now, that might not seem like too hard of a
challenge, but add in the exhaustion from said sport and the temptation of wanting to have a social
life. Another thing t to mention is that certain sports require student–athletes to miss class for away
games. For example, the NCAA championship required Florida State University (FSU) football
players to miss the first day of Spring Classes. When comparing the workload and pay between a
coach and a collegiate athlete, the difference is absurd. At the moment, these students are only
compensated with free tuition, free room, and free board. In the event that times change and college
students begin to earn an hourly minimum wage, the estimated amount of money they would receive
is 330 dollars a week, not including the local and federal taxes taken out. Universities refuse to

Big Time Sports In College Essay
Big–time sports in college has become one of the most impactful experience for the college's fans
and students. In the past two decades the boom of college sports such as football, men's and
women's basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball have grown exponentially. Some the reason
why this has happened is the scholarship sanctions the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) put into effect a few years ago; what the sanctions established were that the "big" schools
such as the University of Florida, University of Texas, University of Alabama among other school
similar to them couldn't offer all of their scholarships to the top athlete coming out of High School,

Athletic Training Research Paper

  • 1. Athletic Training Research Paper This quote was stated by Aleister Crowley, an English occultist and poet. This quote is explaining the importance athletic training, even for yoga. Athletic training is practiced by athletic trainers, they are health care specialists who collaborate with physicians to enhance activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training integrates the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities. (NATA, Par. 1) Athletic training is important in the sports industry because without it, athletes with injuries could possibly be treated wrong and it could cause further injury. It is also important because athletic trainers also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The National Athletic Training Association adopted a code of ethics a year after establishing their journal of scholarly research and discourse. The plan of the NATA was to bring athletic training into the mainstream of sports medicine, which noticeably worked. At a district meeting in Atlanta on December 1st, 1973, the NATA announced representatives to be present at special events such as the Olympics. On December 1st, 1972, the first female athletic trainer joined the athletic training world. Her name is Kristine Freeman and she worked at the University of Florida. Freeman worked with the women's sports teams and also helped with the men's athletic teams every so often. Kristine's father worked for Cramer products, a popular brand of athletic products that are used in the athletic industry. Mimi Porter, Patricia "Trish" Darlington, and Rita DeDamio are also big names in athletic training. They accomplished things no female has done before, such as attending committee meetings. The University of Tennessee–Knoxville made a full–time position for athletic training in the women's athletic department in 1978. (Time Toast, Par 1.) Athletic training did not become an allied occupation until 1991. It became harder to get certified as an athletic trainer in 2004. This was when everyone that wanted to become a certified athletic trainer had to graduate from an accredited athletic training program to be able to take the certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer. • 2. I Love Florida Gulf Coast University Part A: Desired Occupation Florida Gulf Coast University: Vice President for Advancement & Executive Director of Foundation Between my freshman and sophomore year of college I completed a 450 hour internship at All Children's Hospital. This internship although it was mainly administrative showed me a side of hospitals that most people don't see. I was able to see the behind–the–scenes of fundraising and public relations. I had first hand exposure to the world of fundraising for an organization that relies on fundraising. Two years later completed my bachelors of science in general business management. I am currently pursuing my masters in business administration and focusing in marketing. I feel that through marketing I can combine both public relations and fundraising. Ever since I was little I wanted to find a career that let me do what I love and find a way to help people. While waiting to hear about my acceptance into the MBA program at FGCU I applied to a graduate assistant position within FGCU's University Advancement department. As a graduate student this was the dream position I had been looking for. It was the opportunity I had been looking for that would allow me to use the skills I had gained by volunteering at All Children's Hospital. The old saying, "how do you get a job without experience, how do you get experience without a job" does have an answer; it's volunteering. While working for FGCU Alumni Relations within FGCU University Advancement I have had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Should Student Athletes Receive Compensation for Upholding... Student athletes entertain fans at their local resident arena, which generated five million and six hundred thousand dollars in ticket sell in 2012 (National College Athletic Association). This is not fair to student athletes that are solely responsibility for contributing to these financial statistics. Student athletes are leaders in the classrooms and on the field. Student athletes uphold the standards requirement by the NCAA to maintain their eligible to play sports. As leader on the field and the classroom, they possess a high standard of moral and behavior by not cheating, obeying the rules and regulations of their college and university. Student athletes are held to a higher standard than regular students. A regular student can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The alumni banquet often celebrates after a big game or major victories against rival opponents. Student athletes have to participate or make guest appearances to help make money for their schools athletic programs. There is a lot of money being exchange between the alumni and the school, and athletes can easily make themselves eligible by accepting boosters' funds; so, if athletes are mandated to attend banquets then they should be able receive funds for participating at these banquets. Nike is the leading endorser of all major sport companies. According to Forbes.com, "Nike total revenue was fourteen billion dollars for the year of 2013." Oregon University is one of the many schools, which is sponsored by Nike. Before Nike took over as Oregon University official sponsor, they had a mediocre athletic program. The Chief Executive Officer of Nike, Phil Knight, decided to invest into Oregon University. Phil Knight invested an undermined amount of funds to the athletic program. So, that the whole athletic department did not have to worry about anything. Phil Knight, for example, expanded the stadium seating for the football team, provided a state of the art training facilities, and a unlimited supply of costume made uniforms. Phil Knight investment alone increased athletic recruitment and student enrollment. The Oregon University football since then has made several Bowl Championship Series appearances. • 4. Personal Narrative: My Interview With An Athletic Director When it comes to the sports industry, there are many different jobs within organizations and businesses. Prior to interviewing someone, I did a large amount of research on jobs within the NCAA. My ideal interview would have been with the athletic director for the University of Florida, because my goal is to one day become an athletic director. However, Jeremy Foley is a very busy man and was not available to meet with me. Therefore, I interviewed who I believe to be the next best person. I interviewed the coordinator of volleyball operations for the University of Florida Gators, Alesha Busch. Although Alesha does not deal directly with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), she abides by the organizations rules and deals with them through the University Athletic Association (UAA). The reason I chose to interview ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I learned that in order to discuss anything with the NCAA, athletic programs must first go through the UAA. Although I did not get to interview an athletic director, Alesha performs similar tasks that an athletic director would. It is similar in the sense that Alesha directs a volleyball program, rather than multiple programs. One of the first questions I asked Alesha was, "What was the most surprising part of this job?" She then responded with, "the most surprising thing is the fact that I am in connection with a bunch of different people." She then further went on stating, "when they say I am the coordinator, I really am." Alesha said that she meets monthly with compliance, the university business office, and equipment companies to discuss different factors throughout the program. The hard work that Alesha does is what makes Florida Gator volleyball possible. Alesha's job really intrigues me because my ultimate goal in life is to help other people, especially those in ... • 5. Should Cheerleading Be Considered A Sport? Abie Pessima Dr. Farrell ENG 101 November 7, 2016 Should Cheerleading be Considered a Sport? What comes to mind when you think of cheerleading? It is not a sport right? Many people in the world believe cheerleading is not a sport and it is just a bunch of chanting and cheering but it is not just that. In today's world cheerleading is not well recognized and considered as a sport, but it is more than that. It takes more than cheering and chanting to compete as a cheerleader . Here is why I think cheerleading should be considered a sport, because it takes athleticism, persistence, and courage too compete as a cheerleader. What does to take to be considered a sport? According to the Oxford English Dictionary a sport is a, "Sense relating to play, pleasure, or entertainment" (Oxford English Dictionary). Alyssa Roengik a former cheerleader of University of Florida argues that cheerleading is not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How is it not a sport if it is basically everything explained in the definition of the Oxford English Dictionary? Roengik stated how, "Cheerleaders are athletics. College cheerleading was as physically demanding and mentally challenging as any activity" (Roengik). Competitive cheerleading is as challenging as any other sports team, because you compete with other teams, and you have a certain time to do a routine. Roengik definitely states how physically demanding and mentally challenging cheerleading is, but it is the same thing with football, volleyball and so many other teams out there that considered competition. Roengik also states, "But cheerleading is not a sport" (Roegnik). At the same time people would agree and disagree with her, I say this because cheering on another team is not a sport it is ... • 6. College Athletes Are Being Consumed By The World Of... Americans have become consumed by the world of college athletics. This excitement can be seen all around us. Here at the University of Florida, we experience the energy of division I college sports every day. Whether we choose to participate on football game days, wear Gator athletic apparel, or make conversation every day revolving around topics such as "Tebow's non–existent NFL career" or "that one basketball player that kept us out of the championship", the star athletes of our universities become household names across the country. Although it seems to be a life of fame and fortune for these individuals that live the life of a star student athlete, it comes at a cost. Today, college athletes are exploited because of the lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This information was found in a study conducted by the National College Players Association entitled "The Price of Poverty in Big Time College Sport" where it was found that 86% of players were living below the federal poverty line. Meanwhile, the players are not earning the education that will land them decent or high paying jobs if there may be the case of not going pro, or receiving an injury making them ineligible to play. Legally, players are fighting for a more secure representation and a better system of financial security. Next, although the opposing argument is that the athlete receives a free education, this has shown to not always be true. With a "work week" longer than the national average (43.3 hours) how can we say that they receive a free education? In fact, I would argue that they are employees of the school they attend. Also, schools are not producing scholars, they are producing a group of athletes that have about a 2% chance of getting drafted, and an even larger group that either do not graduate, or end up dropping out of school do to an injury, stress, etc. This is also the moment when the racial factor becomes an issue. • 7. The Importance Of Physical Activity This paper begins with the exploration into whether or not physical activities can be traced back to the classroom. Participating in sports, represents a form of physical activity. By the same token, participating in classroom activities and completing educational objectives represents performing mental activity. What might not be so common is that physical activity actually produces increased brain functionality (Florida National University, 2014). An article published by the Florida National University (2014), elaborates that individuals who consistently engage in physical activity regardless of age group or gender tend to experience better overall health, leading to increased mental capabilities and cognitive functions (Florida National University, 2014). Given this information, it can be further expanded that the demands of participating in sports activities such as, games and practice, which can be considered physical activity, relate back to increased mental performance that has the potential to emerge in the classroom (Florida National University, 2014). To further support the view that physical activity increases brain functionality a series of studies and research have been performed. According to Ratey and Hagerman (2008), there is a correlation between physical activity and brain functionality (Ratey & Hagerman, 2008). The authors of this book, search for the answers provided by studies and research to the question of how physical activities impact grades. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Black Athletes' Graduation Rates Weak Major collegiate athletics programs are able to generate millions of dollars for their institutions, but are not able to show any evidence of successfully graduating their black male athletes that contribute to their success in generating those millions of dollars. These universities in turn, are failing these student athletes whom were promised that they would nurture them intellectually as well as athletically. A four year report published by the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education presents statistics that shows that the six major sports conferences in the NCAA (ACC, Big Ten, Big East, Big 12, SEC, Pac 12) have weak graduation rates for male African American Student athletes. Jessica Anderson of the associated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The journal cites the Center for the Study of Athletics that showed that, "95 percent of basketball and football players indicated that earning a college degree was important to them. Unfortunately, one third of these same student athletes earned a GPA of less than 2.0, which severely limits the chances of earning a college degree" (Gatson–Gayles). Not only is this one third of students at risk of not earning a college degree, but the entire group as a whole might not even be successful post college even if they do graduate with a college degree. The reason for this is because a majority of African American male student athletes choose majors and degrees that do not have much value for them personally and can do little to help them be financially secure. Lois Elfman of the article Are Minority Football Players Being Pushed into Pointless Majors? interviewed Professor Jeffrey Fountain and Peter Finley, authors of a research study and analysis on comparing the academic clustering of minority and white student athletes. In the interview Fountain describes something that is becoming an increasing issue in collegiate sports, "A couple of years ago, I just happened to be looking at the media guide for the University of Miami [football team] and noticed as I was going through it that every ... • 9. College Athletes: A Case Study It's the only time of year when one shot can make or break a team's season. It's the only time of year when athletes can be magnified into stars or heros. Millions of eyes witness every heart–breaking upset and every game–saving buzzer beater. It's March and it's madness. The National College Athletics Association (NCAA) makes "$6 billion annually and $1 billion just off of the men's basketball tournament" (USNEWS). In 2013, the Louisville Cardinals faced the Duke Blue Devils in the Mid–West Regional Championship. Louisville, the tournament's one seed, looked to be moving on to the final four when a freak accident slowed everything. Late in the game, sophomore Kevin Ware of the Cardinals leaped to contest a 3 point shot. While everyone in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Between practice, working out, and games, "players on top teams in Division 1 basketball and football spend an average 43.3 hours a week perfecting their game" (Huffington). Universities think of these players as students, instead of employees or as amateurs, instead of professionals. It would be very difficult to work a part–time job while having grades to keep up and putting nearly all of your time into sports. National champ, Shabazz Napier, talked of going to bed hungry in an interview while being potentially worth millions of dollars. His game winning shots made someone very wealthy while he slept with an empty stomach. There was no way for him to hold a job with all of the traveling and time consumed in Division 1 basketball. Another prime example of sports being a full time job for athletes is Florida State Seminole, Jameis Winston. He is one of few that are talented enough to perform well in 2 Division 1 sports. A week after winning his national championship as quarterback of the football team, Winston recorded a win on the mound after saving a game for his baseball team. Jameis Winston is a key asset to the Seminoles recent success and "has a net worth of 32 million" (Celebrity Glory), but didn't make a penny in his 2 years at Florida State. • 10. Should College Athletes Be Paid? There is a debate on whether college athletes should be paid. It has been known that the fewer scholarships given to student–athletes increase their competiveness on the field, which shows us that keeping money away from student–athletes makes them more competitive (Baird 2). There is also a case that student–athletes are being robbed because they are not receiving compensation for their own likeness (Holthaugh JR. 1). Television networks are paying millions for the rights to show big games on TV, which shows us that student–athletes are the entertainers with no compensation (Bowen 1). Allen Sack informs us that there have been cases where some athletes in the NCAA get injured before they finish their career and don't make it to the pros due to the loss of their scholarship, which shows us that the NCAA is exploiting student–athletes Sack 2).The NCAA should require schools to pay for sports–related injuries in any serious injury, because it can determine if they will make it to the NFL (Huma 1). Athletes are accepting illegal pay, because they see the universities making all of the money, which shows us that poor student–athletes are in need of compensation (Porto 1). Adrian Peterson thinks that college athletes should be paid because he fought through injuries and did not make a penny from his years at Oklahoma, which shows us that student–athletes who make it to the NFL have injuries that they are fighting through during the combine (Haislop 2). • 11. Summary: Should Student Athletes Be Paid How Much More Do You Want? Every year at the beginning of the college football and basketball seasons the same intense debate comes up: should student athletes be compensated for their work. The Chronicle of Higher Education recently estimated that college athletics is a $10–billion marketplace (Suggs). That is $500–million more than Major League Baseball (MLB) (Brown), and $2–billion shy of the National Football League (NFL) (Belzer). It's quite obvious college sports are making money. • 15. The Problems With Paying College Players Colleges are infamous for pouring millions upon millions of dollars into their sports programs, except of course, when it comes to paying athletes. Because college athletes are not allowed to be paid in accordance to federal law while they simultaneously create large sums of revenue, there has been a heated debate that Kristi Dosh and Mark Cassell readily provide contrasting evidence for. In Dosh's article, "The Problems with Paying College Players," she argues that it would not be fair to pay college players because many college sports programs are already indebted to their school, and if some schools couldn't afford to pay their players, the well–funded schools would be at an unprecedented advantage. To contrast, Cassell's "College Athletes Should be Able to Negotiate Compensation," takes the viewpoint defending college athletes' pay because the athletes that bring in the most revenue, the star players, are cheated out of compensation in a way that unrightfully benefits those in charge. Although Dosh makes clear points about problems with the financial realities of paying players, Cassell makes the more convincing argument because he uses effective evidence to highlight the injustices of not paying athletes. After attending a conference at which a very intellectual attorney contradicted himself over the issue of whether or not college athletes should or should not be paid, Dosh asks "where is the money going to come from?" • 20. Should College Athletes Be Paid? Recently, one of the most prominent and controversial topics in sports is whether college athletes should or should not be paid to play. Many experts tend to argue that college athletes should not be paid to play in schools. I disagree with this argument due to various reasons. A key source of income that is seen to exist in different institutions is college athletics. It largely attracts many students into institutions. Moreover, many universities worldwide depend on athletes in order to produce as well as maintain the institution's name and popularity. Therefore, college athletes play a significant role towards promoting their schools in achieving their different goals such as an adequate income acquisition. Thus, my question is, why do college athletes not get paid? Some people argue that college athletes should not be paid since they receive their education through scholarships. It is quite evident that scholarship money provided to these college athletes is not enough to cater for all their needs to satisfy. On the contrary, college athletes tend to generate enough income for the institutions. Therefore, there is a feeling that the institutions, in one way or another owe the athletes a little more than scholarships. Colleges should also appreciate their athletes by not only giving them scholarships, but also paying them. This means that they should be given the small payment for their contribution in offering services to the institution. Indeed, college athletes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sickle cells also become sticky and tend to block the blood flow to the limbs and organs ("What is Sickle Cell Anemia?"). • 24. Contradiction In College Football The "contradiction at the heart of big–time college football," as Michael Oriard describes it, is the competing demands of marketing and education. The 1890s proved to university administrators that there was an enormous market for collegiate football, which postulated opportunities for university building. Since this ubiquitous realization, there has coincided this blatant, yet unchanging contradiction that academic institutions are permitted to profit off of the services provided by its student–athletes while the athletes must idly accept that they are amateurs, donating their efforts to their respective schools. The schools then direct this revenue toward strengthening their athletic departments, and thus continues this seemingly endless growth of big–time college sports, all while athletes remain uncompensated and academics continue to take a backseat. The term "extracurricular activity" is defined as follows; "unpaid activities not pertaining to ordinary school classes" (Won). The adjective "commercial" is defined as "viewed with regard to profit" (Merriam– Webster). It is absurd to think that college football can be both a commercial spectacle and an extracurricular activity. Additionally, it may seem controversial that the "coaches decide who receives a scholarship, the scholarship amount and whether it will be renewed" rather than the NCAA who is providing the money for the scholarships (Scholarships). Furthermore, many students can fit one coach's ideals for the team and will be completely wrong for another coach's. This being said coaches are constantly being added and removed. For example, over the past fifteen years Missouri University has had seventeen changes to the coaching staff while Florida has had sixty– five changes to the coaching staff (SEC Coaching Turnover Rates From Past 15 Years are Staggering). Since coaches have the most authority, many players are having their scholarships rescinded due to a change in the coaching staff. In addition, student–athletes are prohibited from accepting pay for sports, and financial aid is not pay or income so players are not entitled to worker's compensations (Rafferty, 1983). Since the formation of the NCAA, student athletes have never been considered employees. The NCAA has developed ways to make money off student–athletes and not pay them. For instance, Walter Byers the first executive director of the NCAA, stated "the NCAA reserves the right to make money off the names, likeness, and images of athletes, preventing others from doing so" (Comeaux, 2015, p. 290). This can be highlighted in the NCAA concept of "amateurism." Amateurism provides rules to ensure that student–athletes' priority is education (NCAA, 2015). Furthermore, "student–athletes are amateurs, and they will be protected from exploitation by professional and commercial enterprises" (NCAA, 2015, para. 4). • 32. Sports : Sports And Sports Unlike professional sports, college sports developed rather violently without regard from university officials. Prior to 1850, there was no such thing as intercollegiate sports. University officials knew there was a yearn for physical release demanded by the student body, so their way of dealing with this epidemic was through manual labor. They had students either farming or clearing forms of debris from college grounds. University officials saw this as a positive because it gave the students physical activity which also benefited them financially because there was no money being put into these activities. The way the students dealt with this was, they created their own contests or events, which was known as "class rushes". These rushes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first official college baseball game was between Williams University and Amherst in 1859. The first official college football association included Harvard, Yale, and Princeton and was developed in 1872. The first track and field association, Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletics of America was formed in 1875. The first ice hockey game was between Harvard and Brown in 1985 (College Athletics in the United States, 2016). With all this attention, traction, and inflow of money, college sports were established and have changed through the years to what we understand it to be now. Factors that contributed to the change in college sports from then to what we know about it now include; financial greed, social and cultural pressures, and the constant battle with academics. Like most other businesses or companies, the biggest issue facing collegiate sports right now is financial greed in all its different forms. Whether it's from greedy committee officials coming from the outside, there always seems to be an influence of money. According to USA Today, Texas A&M had the highest total revenue in the 2015 collegiate year, $192,608,876, up roughly $73 million from the previous year (USA Today). From all this money, athletes involved and actually playing the sports don't receive a single cent. Everyone knows the big money comes from college athletics and not academics. Just in ... • 33. University Athletic Association Case Summary 1. The first interesting fact that Mr. Howard presented to the class during his presentation was the price of a master plan for the University Athletic Association and its renderings of facility upgrades. I was shocked to learn that a master plan with renderings of 7 to 8 facility upgrades from an architecture costs $90,000. Nevertheless, the detail of each of the rendering to buildings such as: the football, baseball, softball stadiums and among others show that the University is taking steps to further improve the fan experience within the stadiums that will seamlessly correlate with all of UF's championship winning teams. However, to get great results you have to spend the money to receive the outcome you want. 2. The second interesting fact that was presented today is also based on the financial aspect of renovation and building new sports facilities on UF's campus. In Mr. Howard's presentation, he mentioned that the UAA is planning to build a new football facility and cafeteria that will benefit all UF student–athletes. Mr. Howard stated that to build a new facility from the ground up with state– of–the–art amenities, it would cost the UAA around $60 million dollars, just for this project alone. Mr. Howard explained that to finance this project and the many others, the UAA has planned that they will take out a loan, use some capital within the reserve, and ... The third interesting and exciting point in today's presentation was the plan to build a champion wall to display all the awards that teams and individuals have won at the University of Florida. This will be a great addition to the University and the University community because it will give fans the opportunity to read the name and years of when awards were won and cherish the accomplishment that the University has received. On top of that, the Champions wall would be another great photo opportunity, in addition to the Heisman statue, for fans to meet before games and events to take ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Importance Of Reverse Of Pay Reverse of Payment "In college I never realized the opportunities available to a pro athlete. I've been given the chance to meet all kinds of people, to travel and expand my financial capabilities, to get ideas and learn about life, to create a world apart from basketball," says Michael Jordan. Although it may seem like college athletes should earn an income for their games, they have many benefits that come along with playing for college sports. College athletic programs cannot afford to pay all athletes that play. It's true that an abundant amount of money comes in, but there is just as much coming out, onto the field and many more. For example, Auburn University launched their latest addition, an 11,000 square foot, high–definition screen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Well, college athletes already thrive in many free perks just for playing a sport such as; get sports scholarships, housing, meals, and many more. Also, there's no fair way to pay the athletes, the athletic programs cannot afford to pay them, the NCAA is a non–profit organization, and lastly playing a college sport is more of a privilege, not a job nor an errand. Paying college athletes would be a ridiculous thing to do, considering their abundant amount of benefits. So, we should think about these benefits and help the NCAA make the right decision, not paying college ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. National Athletic Director At The National College... One day I hope to get the opportunity to work for the National College Athletic Association. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is an association made up of 1,261 institutions, conferences, organizations and individuals devoted to the administration of intercollegiate athletics (NCAA.org). The purpose of the National College Athletic Association is to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an essential part of the educational program and the athlete as an essential part of the student population. The association's purpose is to help student athletes maintain a proper balance in life. They enforce the concept of athletes putting school before anything else. Specifically within the NCAA organization, I hope to become an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think that in order to be a successful athletic director, one needs to keep the functional areas of sport management in mind. These four areas include: planning, organizing, leading, and evaluating (Masteralexis, Barr, & Hums, 2015). The first aspect of planning is something that athletic directors' need to be very good at doing. An athletic director needs to have both short and long term goals. If I were to become an athletic director, I would want to make sure all of the student athletes received the proper tools to succeed both on and off the court. I would make sure each student athlete, scholarship and non–scholarship, had a tutor available to them at all times. I know that the University of Florida allows each athlete to have a tutor, however, it is optional. The reason that it is optional is because it is something that is enforced by the coaches. Therefore, I would make it a university athletic department policy that all coaches must force their student athletes to use a tutor. I would want to make sure each athlete used their tutor to their advantage so they could be aware of what was going on in the classroom. This would also allow students to not be stressed about their studies, and that way they have a proper balance between their sport and education. It is a huge goal of the NCAA for their students to have a proper balance in life, therefore I think through this plan I could implement that balance. In order to make this possible ... • 36. College Athlete Compensation : College Athletes COLLEGE ATHLETE COMPENSATION When the topic of college comes up, many things come to mind. Those are the glory days for most of us. The college parties, the struggle to find a balance between having fun and maintaining a good GPA, and not to mention the amazing athletic departments that colleges offer. Everyone enjoys sports but does anyone ever stop to wonder how much goes into preparing for those games? There's very much work that goes in the preparation of a student athlete other than just showing up for practice. It's definitely a lot more work than your average college student which is why the question whether or not college athletes should get paid comes up. Football alone brings in millions of dollars a year; and with all that cash ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not to mention that practice is a requirement; if somebody misses too many practices, there's a high chance they will get kicked off the team. The equivalent to a job someone could say that they are being fired. Along with attempting to be the best at the sport an athlete performs, comes the struggle of maintaining a high enough grade point average to actually play. This means adding on another 10–20 hours a week of studying, not to mention the time spent in class. The usual college football team, requires a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average. Now, that might not seem like too hard of a challenge, but add in the exhaustion from said sport and the temptation of wanting to have a social life. Another thing t to mention is that certain sports require student–athletes to miss class for away games. For example, the NCAA championship required Florida State University (FSU) football players to miss the first day of Spring Classes. When comparing the workload and pay between a coach and a collegiate athlete, the difference is absurd. At the moment, these students are only compensated with free tuition, free room, and free board. In the event that times change and college students begin to earn an hourly minimum wage, the estimated amount of money they would receive is 330 dollars a week, not including the local and federal taxes taken out. Universities refuse to acknowledge the thought of a minimum wage. According to them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Big Time Sports In College Essay Big–time sports in college has become one of the most impactful experience for the college's fans and students. In the past two decades the boom of college sports such as football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball have grown exponentially. Some the reason why this has happened is the scholarship sanctions the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) put into effect a few years ago; what the sanctions established were that the "big" schools such as the University of Florida, University of Texas, University of Alabama among other school similar to them couldn't offer all of their scholarships to the top athlete coming out of High School, making all the smaller schools more competitive on the national level. The financial results of the college sports boom is astounding, according to NCAA.org, and Huffingtonpost.com just this last season alone the NCAA made $989 ...
