1. Unit 26 film studies
Assignment 2: The Contexts of Production
Final Report
Arman Hussain
2. Brief
I was asked to find out about how the contexts of production can affect the
final product, in this case, films. Contexts I was asked to investigate were:
Historical
Technological
Cultural
Methods
a) Historical& Technological
Firstly I watched a documentary called the birth of Hollywood narrated
by Paul Merton which explained aboutthe history of Hollywood films
and how its change over the years then I explored a PowerPointcalled
film history which is fromthese I constructed a leaflet and a shortsilent
film.
b) Cultural
I investigated how ideology and culture can be represented through a
country’s filmoutput. This involved looking at some clips from different
countries and conducting further secondary and primary research into
the films of one particular country of my own choice from which I
constructed a PowerPointabout American film I also compared
representation made to my own experiences.
c) Remakes (Historical, Technological & Cultural)
Firstly I researched 3 films and their remakes noting similarities and
differences between them. This included points about their
production/technology; narrative; setting sound lightning secondly I
focused on back to the future 2 and looked at historical context to
constructmood board then chosea sceneand planed how I would
remake it 30 years in advanceto reflect the changes in year difference
actors and outfits and difference in technology.
3. Findings
When I created my leaflet I included facts about Lumiere
brothers for example they wereboth born in Franceand
were sent to Technical School.
When I watch the documentary found out about the birth
of Hollywood and how technology has change over years
and how the Lumiere brothers became one of the first real
directors.
The information that was looked at was related to cultural
films, the video clip that was looked at was called “Top ten
foreign films”. The clips that I found werethe best was put
on to MicrosoftPower Point. The power point was created
so that other films fromdifferent country’s can be compared
to the films that are listed on the document.
After making the PowerPointI had too choose the country that I wanted to
do. I had to make a Questionnairefirstabout the country I choseI japan
and I made a Questionnaireasking people about japan, with some honest
answers. TheQuestionnairehad to use primary research. Asking peoplein
my classroomabouttheir opinions about japan. I was able to collect my
Questionnaireback and I got good result somepeople wereinterested
going japan for holiday and quite a bit of people wasn’tin to Japanese’s
food and some found the Japaneseculture quite interesting.
4. Cultural
The next thing I did went on the Prezi website to research based of the country I have
chosen which I sticked with japan I started my work on Prezi but it had problem loading
and saving my work so I started from scratched and did it on Microsoft Word. On
Microsoft Word we had a few facts about the country respectfully, a brief summary of
that film and does the film include any stereotypes that the audience know about.
Silent Film
I made my own silent movie in the style of the Lumiere Brothers. I got some people for my
class to act in my movie I named my movie as la troisieme rouethe (third wheel) my movie
was about 45 seconds and we were only allowed to use one shot without any movement or
editing. I had to do the filmand the French titles for beginning and the end. So all the action
and excitement you saw in those early days films, which all was done in one shot.
5. Mood Board
We all had to
do watch a film back to the future released 2 they went in to the 1980s. After seeing the
film we created a Mood board. We created four slides based upon thirty years that back
to the future is set in. 1955, 1985, 2015, and 2045.
On this Mood board, which I created on Microsoft word we put on pictures and facts
that happened in those thirty years respectfully. We did this so we can look at the
differences between the thirty years and looking at how things have changed over the
years.
Conclusion
When I did my silent film I found out the older days recording was harder
they had no sound but now the videos are much clear than the old days the
image was black and white and this days they use colour images. They have
high quality videos and HD videos are really good nowadays.
There are different cultures in different types of movie. Itis really important
to have other cultures in as I know fromdoing my filming and has a major
impact because of the different values like music and more things.
