The Breakfast Club and Teen Identity
The movie The Breakfast Club takes viewers on a comedic tour of the ups and downs of
adolescence. The Breakfast Club, directed by John Hughes, focuses on the events that unfold
between five very different high school students during a Saturday detention. Even though the
movie was shot in the 1980 's the characters portrayal is still relatable in a way to a lot of people
today. Director John Hughes takes us on a comedic ride with what seems like another typical "teen
movie" while still portraying a few life lessons along the way and exposing some truths behind
stereotyping. Anyone who has ever been a high school student can probably find some way to relate
to the characters in the film. The movie revolves around 5 students who for various reasons have
been sent to Saturday detention by principle Vernon. The principle asks each of the students to write
a one–page paper on who they think they are. As the day progresses, we see the teens begin to bond
with each other and find out about each other and themselves. The film begins by introducing each
of the five characters. John Hughes gives us five common archetypes with each of his characters
including: a jock, a popular princess, a geek, a criminal, and basket case. These generic characters
make it easier for the audience to relate to one of the characters in the film. Andy, the jock, is the
generic high school athlete, or so it seems.

Teen Film : Are Teen Movies Appealing To Their Audience
Teen Film is a film genre, the targeted audience of teen film is teenagers and young adults. The
setting of this genre is often set in high schools and colleges. Main themes in teen film include love,
rebellion, peer pressure, conflict with parents and friends or alienation etc. This essay will discuss
why teen films are so appealing to their audience. Adolescents in order to obtain peer recognition,
eager to independence, strong rebellion, the establishment of self–image, teens can self–
identification though teen films. Some teen films areas that will be talked about are themes, people
groups, locations and storylines.
To begin with, there are many reasons why teen films are so appealing to their audience. Starting
with the theme, Teen films appeal to teenagers and young adults. One of the reasons is that teens
love the central themes and love to watch. The topics around teens film usually include the theme of
breaking the status quo, peer pressure, friendship and includes meaningful theme. Teens love
watching teen films because the scenes in the movie and experiences are the same for themselves,
for example, in "High School Musical" the main theme of this movie is "The Start of Something
New". In the film "High School Musical" teens are always facing issues that they don't want to face,
work that they don't want to do, even some awesome opportunities that teens are scared to take part
in. In the film, Gabriella and Troy have an opportunity to sing on the stage. In the

To Be True to Yourself in a World That Is Constantly...
To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly making you something else is a great
achievement
All of us possess qualities that differentiate us from other human beings. These distinguishing
features could be more or less highlighted in appearance, mindset or capabilities, but they will
always persist and determine the nature of our personality. Unfortunately these characteristic
attributes are deteriorating as humanity is moulding us into the "perfect person" influencing us to
stray away from who we are (our so called "insignificant" selves) to what is desirable (a flawless
model). Staying true to yourself means to stick to what you believe in and being whom you were
meant to be, it means not sacrificing who you are to fit in with ... Show more content on

According to Anastasia Goodstein, from Huffington Post, "80 percent of girls have purchased an
item as a result of an ad in a teen magazine and 63 percent trust magazine ads." As a result girls
become convinced that they require particular fashions to belong in a society that emphasizes
materialism. Moreover, most of the fashion, diet and lifestyle advice is directed toward being
desirable to men. Magazines stress sexuality as a central identity, minimizing all other attributes.
The girls reading teen magazines begin to digest and trust the message that they are only sexual
objects.
Peer pressure is the influence exerted by a social group or an individual, encouraging other persons
to change their attitudes, values, or behaviours in order to conform to group norms. Peer pressure is
most commonly associated with youth, in part because most youth spend large amounts of time in
schools and other fixed groups that they do not choose and are seen as lacking the maturity to
handle pressure from friends. Peer pressure can also have positive effects when people are pressured
toward positive behaviour, such as volunteering for charity or excelling in academics or athletics, by
their peers. However Risk taking behaviour is seemingly the most common as these same people

Examples Of Stereotypes In Teenage Movies
According to Campbell and Kean, teen movies are filled with stereotypes which can be divided into
five categories: jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, goths and stoners (Campbell and Kean 274). For the
purpose of this essay, they will be referred to as princesses (formerly cheerleaders), loners (formerly
goths) and rebels (formerly stoners). In this essay, I will argue that 10 Things I Hate About You does
not have the mentioned stereotypes. In 10 Things I Hate About You the main characters can be
divided into these categories. Kat Stratford is the loner. She is described by Cameron James as "anti
sociable". A student of L. Monique Pittman states "[s]he's harsh and brash and not calm, submissive
and sweet like her younger sister" (L. Monique Pittman 7). For ... Show more content on

But it's only 4:30." Kat is not afraid to be different from her peers and actually wants to distance
herself from her fellow school mates, by outing her dislike of prom and standing up in class because
she does not agree with what the teacher says. Bianca is the princess. Bianca is pretty, which is
confirmed by Cameron and Joey who are both trying to date her. In the beginning of the movie
Bianca is described by Cameron's friend Michael as "conceited", which would argue that Bianca is
self–centered. She is obedient to whatever her father says. For example, when her father says that
Bianca cannot date until Kat does, Bianca is annoyed by this, but accepts it and does not actually
date until Kat does. Patrick Verona is the rebel. He expresses bad boy behavior by smoking, playing
with fire in class and performing a song at the football field, which gets him into detention. There

Representation of Sexuality in Tv
With reference to relevant cultural theories analyse the representation of sexuality in a
film/television text of your choice.
I have chosen to look at and analyse a television text. It is a TV drama aimed at a teenage audience
called Skins. I chose this particular text as it focuses upon many different characters and scenarios in
regards to sexuality and this forms a basis for analysis and evaluation. Skins also focuses upon
Teenage sexuality, specifically, which I believe is a broad and interesting subject to analyse with
many opportunities to elaborate.
Skins is a British teen drama, which was aired on Channel 4 on terrestrial television and E4 on
digital television. It has had 2 seasons consisting of 19 episodes altogether. Skins ... Show more

The further 'off the rails' Cassie goes, the more extreme the sexual situations, at one point 'courting'
a female and then a few minutes after the female leaves a male arrives. "Sexuality strongly
influences people's identity." (Op. cit. p.22) And at this point in the series we find that Cassie has a
very mixed up idea about who she is and what she wants.
This can also be seen in Season 1 when Maxxies best friend Anwar refuses to tell his parents about
Maxxies sexuality due to their religious beliefs. We see that Maxxie is torn between who he is and
whom Anwar wants him to be and this puts the friendship under great strain resulting in Maxxie
refusing to turn up to Anwars party. "Gay adolescents who are more conventional in their gender
characteristics have the option of passing as straight and many do." (Op. cit. p. 461) This situation
happens a lot in real life but can be the cause of many problems, both for the person dealing with
feelings of homosexuality and hiding them and those around that person. Many people have
reported having feelings of being 'trapped within themselves' and having pent up aggression due to
being in such a situation, which isn't hard to believe when we think that adolescence is when we
discover ourselves sexually. "Adolescence involves the development of a sense of self and social
identity independent of one's parents (Erikson, 1968; Steinberg 2004). Answering questions about
one's sexuality figure centrally in this

Nannette Burstein American Teen
AMERICAN TEEN:
A documentary filled with scripted spontaneity and a slight insight to reality explores the
stereotypical lives of five high–school seniors. Kaylee O'Dwyer talks about the truth behind this
popular film, "American Teen."
'American Teen,' directed by Nanette Burstein, is a documentary film set in a small town in Indiana.
The film follows the lives of five high–school teenagers through their final year of high–school in a
way that hasn't been perceived since 'The Breakfast Club'. The film over–exaggerates the problems,
demands and complications the modern generations are facing today by combining candid footage
with false, staged events. The goal is less to provide a slice of reality than it is to estimate a
fictionalized version of that reality through the inclusion of re–enactments, dramatisations, voice–
overs and other techniques, deceiving viewers into believing that what they're seeing is actually real.
The film follows the five seniors from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are without–a–doubt numerous scenes in the film that are obviously staged or recreated for
reasons such as in situations which the camera man wasn't present, to improve the film, errors in the
recordings or errors in the sound. Viewers have doubted the authenticity of the film but Burstein
continues to defend her film as an accurate, non–manipulated insight of teenage life. The scene of
Megan sending around Erica's picture to the whole school captures the replies and comments all the
students were making. Also in the scene where Hannah's boyfriend breaks up with her by text
captures his message perfectly to Hannah. In a situation of an unexpected event there is no possible
way the camera man could be present at all times to capture every reply. Burstein seems to always
have her camera present at just the right

The Merchants Of Cool
In Rushkoff's film, The Merchants of Cool, he rhetorically questions if "teenagers even have a
culture to call distinctly their own." In the late 1990's when the documentary was made, the
implication was that they do not. However, with the internet's advancements and the accessibility of
communication with massive amounts of people, teenagers today can form authentic cultures that
are not contaminated by the corporate media. When the documentary was produced, media exposure
was limited to private and expensive mediums such as television, movies and radio. These outlets
were plagued with marketing agendas designed to sell products under the guise of authentic music
and entertainment. Formerly non–existent cultural archetypes such as the ... Show more content on

The media chooses to portray and sell sex, violence, drama and role models because it appeals to
teenagers' biological and evolutionary instincts. The excessive amounts of sex hormones being
produced in teenagers boosts libido causing displays of eroticism to be very alluring. Scenes of
action or violence release adrenaline and endorphins for emotional stimulation and teen idols like
NSYNC and Edward Cullen portray the ideal mate for many girls. The music presented is mostly
homogenous and simple to promote familiarity and emotional response. Had these businesses tried
to sell celibacy, indifference and pariahs, their profits would have declined. In The Merchants of
Cool, Rushkoff goes to a teenage party to survey rising trends and notices a strange phenomenon.
The girls dancing in front of his camera seemed to be selling the same exaggerated sex appeal that
corporations were selling to the teenagers. He labeled this sensation a sort of "giant feedback loop"
which implied that, since corporations try to mirror teenage behavior and then pervert that into a
more explicit version to sell back, which in turn causes teenagers to emulate the corporation's
behavior, teenagers are incapable of having a genuine culture to call their own, much like the young

The Cross And The Switchblade By David Wilkerson
In his book, The Cross and the Switchblade, David Wilkerson explains how his ministry started.
Over 15 million people have read his book which was published in 1962 through The Berkley
Publishing Group, and in 1969, his book became a Hollywood motion picture that reached over 50
million people. Wilkerson did not stop at this book. In fact, he continued to write over 30 more
books. (Worldchallenge.org, 2014, pg. 1) With that said, The Cross and the Switchblade 's thesis
statement is that the Holy Spirit is in charge. David Wilkerson, a country preacher from
Pennsylvania, is the founder of Teen Challenge. This organization started in 1958 and still runs
today as a ministry to save those with habits that are life controlling. Teen Challenge has become
one of the most effective ways to reach out to teenagers and young adults who are dealing with
issues related to gangs, drugs, and alcohol. However, the road to success was very challenging for
Wilkerson and his team. (Worldchallenge.org, 2014, pg. 1) Anyone who picks up The Cross and the
Switchblade is Wilkerson 's potential audience. He wrote this book in order to share his journey of
starting the ministry that we now call Teen Challenge. Most likely, Pentecostals will read this story.
Even so, this book can also be an instrument in salvation for others. I believe that Wilkerson
understood both of these statements and, thus, wrote his book in such a way to minister to all
peoples. An emphasis is placed on the Holy Spirit

Are Teen Movies Get It Wrong?
Being a young adult, constantly circling the edge of the abyss of adulthood, is one of the most
critically important and talked about moments in a person's life. That's why 'bildungsroman' novels
have their own section in Barnes and Nobles and why teen movies are still one of the most popular
genres: because the transition into adulthood is fascinating. And yet, most acclaimed teen movies
get it wrong. From John Bender's borderline rape–y advances towards Claire in The Breakfast Club
and still getting to kiss the girl to (insert another example), most films that focus around young
adults simply aren't accurate and don't portray the realities of being a young adult. To quote Cher
from the hallowed film Clueless, "She's a full–on Monet. It's ... Show more content on

It's as if Enid and Rebecca are attempting to remain suspended in this moment, as if they're trying to
avoid making decisions because they don't know what they want: it is the teenage condition and
they're afraid of making mistakes.
The entire movie feels like something of a documentary, perhaps it's the subtle 90s coloring or the
way Zwigoff chose (insert something about camera angles) or maybe it's because I myself was in an
identical position on the cusp of adulthood nearly three years ago. Ghost World is suburbia,
complete with the strip malls and dinky themed diners. It's hellish for Enid and Rebecca and yet,
they're seemingly stuck. Ghost World is a representation of the entire youth experience, something
out of a teenage nightmare and a universal experience: the yearning to escape and simultaneously
the possibility that you never will, highlighted through Enid and Rebecca's characters. It's an
unspecified location thus it's everywhere. A ghost world is something you carry around with you.
Throughout the film, Zwigoff attempts to make a point of the truth of growing up is difficult; it's
about a desire to fit in while also hating that you care what your peers thing of you. Additional
tension is created with the fact that both Enid and Rebecca internalize their struggles and don't
communicate openly with one another, an all

High School Confidential : Notes On Teen Movies
While high school in reality is full of surprises and twisty roads, teen television shows and movies
are based off a strict set of conventions that allude to other teen films. In David Denby 's "High
School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies," he describes the typical movie storyline and
characters: the blonde, superficial cheerleaders that make up the popular crowd, along with the buff,
handsome jocks versus the social outcasts comprised of geeks and freaks. Denby continues to
explain the nature of these two social standings, including how the "cool group" bullies anyone
below them. Denby goes on further to discuss how a particular outsider usually becomes the hero or
heroine of the story, despite their social discomfort or awkward ... Show more content on

However, despite following a typical film social stigma, Gossip Girl's popularity has been off the
charts for many reasons, including the fact that it is relatable. Entertainment Weekly awarded the
series its highest grade of "A", while the New York Magazine designated "Greatest Teen Drama of
All Time" to Gossip Girl, as well as naming the series as "Best Show Ever" in 2008. In 2009,
Rolling Stone named the series as "TV 's Hottest Show." Gossip Girl had people hooked throughout
its six season for a variety of reasons. Firstly, it provided an outlet for entertainment and it satisfied
people's wealthy and superficial fantasies without the guilt. Mary McNamara of the LA Times fell
for "the leggy glamour of it, the pretty rich girls at cocktail parties, the rumpled sexiness of those
school uniforms, the gothic romance of stone–mansioned New York".
While Gossip Girl portrayed the teenagers with upscale lives in a glamorous fashion, it doesn't take
away from identifying with the teenage struggles and dilemmas one may face. Gossip Girl presents
a realistic view of privileged New York City, from the over–controlling mothers to the gay father to
the teenagers trying to fight their way through the social hierarchy in and outside their private prep
school. The

Teen Depression In Teens
Depression In Teens Suicide is the second leading cause of death in adolescence fifteenth through
nineteen only after traffic accidents (Klass). Teenage depression is a serious mental health problem
that causes teens to have the persistent feeling of sadness and lack of interest in activities.
Depression changes the way teens think, feel, and behave. Some people may wonder why
depression is even a concern, but depression itself causes two thirds of suicides (Department of
Health). Most people don't know what causes depression, the most common causes of depression
are biological chemistry, hormones, it can also be inherited; some people's depression stems from
childhood trauma, or having negative thoughts that give you a negative mood. There are chemicals
in the brain that if abnormal or impaired the function of nerve receptors and nerve systems change,
leading to depression. Inheriting depression is not simple, no one simply "inherits" depression from
their mother or father, each person inherits a unique combination of genes from their mother and
father, and certain combinations can predispose them to a particular illness (Department of Health).
Childhood trauma, such as sexual or physical abuse, domestic violence, neglect or parental loss, can
have long–lasting consequences, researchers are exploring the effects of early trauma on the stress–
response systems (Department of Health) that can later can lead to depression later in life. Teen
depression may be linked to

Perk Of Being A Wallflower, And The Perks Of Being A...
To the average American teenager, high school may have seemed like a real–life nightmare. So why
is it that so many movies today revolve around this hellish concept? According to David Denby, the
author of "High–School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies", there is a whole genre of these teen
films. As explained by Denby, such genre films include stereotypical male and female villains of the
social queen or jock type, mixed up emotions and teens rising above the "poisonous system of
status, snobbery and exclusion" that is commonly known as high school (Denby 367). By this
definition, the film The Perks of Being a Wallflower can be categorized as a teen film. Based on the
book published in 1999, The Perks of Being a Wallflower follows Charlie ... Show more content on

However, for the majority or teens, there is a considerable amount of teen angst that comes from this
emotional growth. When depicted in movies, Denby explains that "these films arise from
remembered hurts which then get recast in symbolic form." (Denby 369). In Denby's example, the
main character may have suffered from the death of a parent and thus "is ill equipped for the
emotional pressures of school." (Denby 369). This can be seen to be incredibly true for the main
character of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Through out the film, there are memories brought up
from Charlie's past about his best friend's suicide, his Aunt's Death, and his past sexual abuse. For
example, when Sam kisses Charlie and rubs his leg, Charlie gets flashbacks of a similar situation in
which his adult Aunt sexually abuses him. Due to his past, Charlie is depicted as unable to cope with
the problems he faces, through his actions over the course of the film. Charlie takes a passive role in
his life. For example, when his sister is abused by her boyfriend, Charlie does not step in. He also
doesn't speak up when Mary Elizabeth declares that she and Charlie are dating, though he clearly
doesn't have any interest in her. From the audience's point of view, it is known that his passive
actions are a result of his emotional problems. However, as explained by Denby, "the motherless
child also has powers and will someday be a

Teens, or girls in general read this magazine, and by placing an ad such as this in the magazine
would generally boost sales. Another aspect of this ad that would commonly appeal to the teen age
group would have been the choice of colors, and the background of the advertisement.
As far as background goes, historical background is also relatively important in the relevance of the
TI–83+ silver edition graphing calculator advertisement. Teens have many choices when it comes to
graphing calculators, so that is probably why the author chose to include a feature that not all
calculators have. The phonebook feature would appeal greatly to the viewer, hence its purpose. This
particular feature, the phonebook, would be of importance because in the past no calculator
including all other Texas Instruments calculators has offered such a feature.
The Texas Instruments advertisement also allows the viewer to make assumptions in relation to the
pictures and text displayed on the page. These assumptions could be anything from the approximate
cost of the tool, to the pondering of the ray of colors used in the composition of the calculator itself.
These different conjectures are made due to the actual composition of the advertisement itself.
Then comes the purpose of the advertisement. The advertisement is presented to show the viewer
what a unique tool the TI–83+ silver edition is, and what new features are included in the calculator.

Peer Pressure In Teenage Movies
Bullying and peer pressure are issues that most every student in school has to deal with. Because
this is such a pertinent issue, movies are made based on these problems. This is the teen genre.
Movies from this genre are from a teenagers point of view so they can relate to them. Heathers is a
dark teen movie where the bullies are killed off in an attempt to clean out the school. Peer pressure
and bullying are a necessary part of the teen genre because of how big a part it takes in teen society.
Almost every film genre is based around groups of people who exist in real life. People who are ten
through nineteen make up over one tenth of the earth's population. This creates a demand for films
based upon the issues and hardships they go through. Just like how adults can relate to movies about
people barely making enough money to pay bills or working in a boring office. Who else would be
the antagonist in a teen movie except for bullies or those who peer pressure kids? These seem to be
the biggest problems teenagers face and that is why it is always the issue in teen movies.
Heathers starts off with a group of female teen bullies practically running a school. One of them,
Veronica Sawyer, regrets joining the group because of what she is now involved in. Heather
Chandler, the leader, peer pressures Veronica, who is evidently a great calligraphist, into forging
notes to appear to be from other people. She then uses these notes to make people think someone

Are Teens Magazines Be Considered As Academic Writings?
What are usually titled as "academic writings" might more accurately be described as methods of
terminologies that scholars use to define their areas of expertise. Academic writings are usually
publications that are written for a specific audience and both provides useful information and
persuasive content that guides readers over intellectual boundaries. The three main characteristics
that an academic writing consists of include using a specific tone, creating an outline before writing,
and researching over the content that the writing is about. A type of writing that is not considered as
academic writing, but should be, is teen magazines. There are several teen magazines in
convenience stores or waiting rooms that target a specific vulnerable audience that happens to be
teenagers. Magazines share the similar characteristics that an academic writing possesses, therefore
teen magazines should be considered as academic writings.
When reading academic writings, the following questions are usually asked inside the mind of the
reader. What is the message or point in the text that the author is trying to convey? Does an
explanation of his research exist? Is he reporting the data collected? What is he arguing of the
results or of the outcome? By asking all of these questions, the comprehension of understanding the
significance of academic writing becomes clearer. So then what is the difference between a teen
magazine and a scholarly essay? There is no difference. Simply put, the

Along with this excitement, however, came skeptics. As the culture of science fiction and

bubbling up. The overall fear in the 1960s involved man creating Artificial intelligence to the point
where it is too great and mankind becomes subservient to the machine it created. This technophobia

High school in real life is full of surprises, but according to David Denby in his article "High School

Scene" opens with the jock and the cheerleader characters. Blonde and buff, the Jock and the
Cheerleader are superficial and proud to proclaim it. They are popular and perky, and always too
good to be true. The cheerleader is usually the enemy of the hero or heroine. She is generally rich,
blonde, and queen bee of the social circle, with no sense of selflessness. The jock is usually the

Denby 's view of teen movies, there are many other characters in the movie who fall directly in line

character. She has no regard for anyone 's life but her own. Also, Violet 's divorced parents are
completely unaware that their son Sebastian is in London playing with a band, and their daughter
Violet is impersonating him in order to play soccer. In retrospect, Denby 's views hold up in
analysis. Occasionally there is a movie or a character that steps outside Denby 's stereotype,
however most teen movies are similar.

Teen Drama Analysis
The Era of the Teen Drama (Part 1)
Picking a good television show to binge watch on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, or even ordering a DVD
boxed set (we're all guilty of it), everything. You know ten minutes in if you're going to like it or not
enough to fully make the commitment. Most binge watching begins and ends with none other than
the teen drama.
This concept of the teen drama is not a foreign one, and there is something about teens with insane,
over–dramatic lives that has everyone hooked.
It all started in 1990, when the first show to ever be classified as a teen drama was put into our
hearts and television screens. That is Beverley Hills 90210. The show ran from
1990 to 2000, and it followed a group of friends, living in Beverley Hills and making the ... Show

Of course there was a maximum amount of drama. Between friends dating friends (and breaking
up), drugs, alcohol, jobs across the world, there was nothing that couldn't keep its viewers hooked
into the lives of these teens.
The next show that came about was basically set up to live onto the teen drama name
(or fame.) That show is none other than Dawson's Creek. Dawson's Creek is a show that if you are a
tv show/ teen drama junky, you have to have it under your belt.
It starts out as a classic coming of age, two best friends in high school, trying to make the transition
from best friends to lovers, without it being awkward. However, there are major twists and turns, the
girl next–door who without intention mixes up the love interests, and the other boy friend who is
just trying to find himself but actually finds love. Dawson's Creek has pretty much everything you
want in a teen drama. Even though it is a few years old by now, and can seem a little dated, it is just
like the ones from current time that we tv junkies love, (One Tree Hill, and Gossip Girl, to name a
few.) There are long drawn out love speeches from your favorite characters, you trying to figure out

High School Confidential : Notes On Teen Movies By David...
The author of the essay "High–School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies," David Denby, purpose
was to explain the stereotypical high school movie genre. Most teen movies follow certain criteria
that some may feel has little reflection on what high school is truly like while others may feel these
movies are exactly what high school is like. In typical teen movies, there are usually the cool kids,
the popular cheerleader with the jock boyfriend, and that outsider nerd or outcast. Where that cool
kids control the playground and the outcast just try to fit in and be part of the cool clique or stay as
far away as possible and avoid humiliation. The film "Easy A" proves to follow this exact pattern
that Denby speaks of, just as stereotypical as any other teen film.
The movie chosen to be written about was "Easy A" where the director, Will Gluck, directs a film
about a student, Olive Penderghast, who feels bad for those who do not necessarily fit in. Therefore,
she allows them to spread rumors about her and certain sexual exploitations. In doing so she
becomes the school's most talked about student, while jeopardizing her reputation, while at the same
time making some financial gains. She first pretends to lose her virginity to a friend who is too
afraid to come out and say he is gay, causing praise for him and humiliation for her. This rendezvous
begins a whirlwind of endeavors and a chain reaction of situation she would soon regret. Luckily, in
this movie, there is also a

Teenage Culture And The Normalization Of A Teenage Society
Being a teenager isn't easy. At no point in history has being a teenager ever been easy. Since the
moment you turn thirteen, you are plunged into a world where your thoughts are plagued and your
emotions trap you. Teenage culture has become the normalization of peer pressure, drug and alcohol
abuse, bullying, cliques, etc. Teenagers are the ones who decide who and what is cool or not.
Teenagers create the social boundaries and characteristics that every generation has come to know.
They are the control of the media and have more power than most people are willing to ever realize
or understand. But they are constantly placed in boxes and labeled. Teenagers have become walking
cliches and are treating poorly by many because of that. In the movie, Legally Blonde, the main
character, Elle Woods, is a popular blonde sorority girl who is constantly torn down and criticized
for simply being herself. The movie begins with music playing. The beginning credits show and the
stage is set. The camera shows a desk of perfume and makeup. Suddenly a bunch of fun popular
girls appear on screen. Confusion fills the air of the audience. Minutes pass and we are introduced to
our main character. She is popular and beautiful and... blonde. The audience begins to panic. How
could it possibly be that the main girl is not nerdy and introverted? The audience demands for a
clarification, waiting for her to strike so we can establish her as "villain." The strike never comes.
The audience begins to

Teens And Teen Pregnancy
As us females were young we all seem to become mothers, by playing with dolls, and playing house
with others our age. It may be easy for us to say that as children we thought they needed some
assistance, but in reality that was only our imagination. As little kids did we really think about what
it would be like to really have a baby? We were children, but see the thing here is that teens are still
children who are having other children. 16 year olds do not just wake up thinking they want to have
a baby, most of the time it just happens without being planned. Teens often do not think about what
life would be like as a parent which is easy to happen and we should be informed on the reasons
why and what it really is like. The first reason why a girl can easily get pregnant is not being
informed about contraceptives. There are about 1,700 school–based health centers nationwide in
which about ⅓ provide contraceptives. Sexual education is very important when it comes to this,
there are states that still require parents to sign off their children receiving any sexual education in
schools, in which many of the cases the parents and their kids are too embarrassed to talk about.
Although it is the parent's responsibility to talk about it, they do not. When a teen is sexually active,
it is important for them to let a parent know, so that they can get checked. Another possible reason
can be unwanted sex. According to Teenhelp.com four in ten girls first experience happens at age 13

Teens And Teen Stress
Teen stress
Teens are stressed out. 49 percent of students reported feeling "a great deal of stress" on a daily
basis. One of those students could be yours. Many parents are unaware of how much stress is put on
teens at such a young age. Teen stress levels have gotten so high, that they have surpassed the stress
levels of adults.
Teens in America are stressed out and are struggling to maintain a healthy mentality.
Yet, many parents/adults, when they hear "teen stress" immediately begin thinking, "Stress? What
do they know about stress at such a young age?" What they fail to realize is that teen stress is a large
and growing complication. Teens have to deal with major physical, apprehensive, and emotional
transitions. This impacts their stress levels majorly.
According to a survey published by the American Psychological Association, "Teens routinely say
that their school–year stress levels are far higher than they think is healthy and their average
reported stress exceeds that of adults, per an annual survey." As an American teen, I can confirm that
the amount of stress during the school year is immoderate. A specific groups of teens whose stress,
more times than most, goes unnoticed are high school seniors. Seniors have to work harder and are
in constant fear that they will not going to get into the "right" college or be able to build a career for
themselves. They have to deal with the primitive transition from high school, a place where they
slacked off and could go back

Analysis Of Mean Girls
Teen girl films are Janus–like in nature, being aimed at teen girls themselves, but also at opening up
the world of teen girls to their parents and society at large. The marketing for Mark Water's 2004
film Mean Girls reflects this divided focus, using a two–pronged approach to attempt to attract the
largest range of paying customers. On an aesthetic level, from the appearance of the promotional
website to the music used in the trailers, the film tries is aimed at teenage girls. However, on a less
superficial level, the high–brow humor used in the promotional videos and the written content of the
website, is aimed at adults. Mean Girls is praised for success in spite of genre, and the praise is
focused it's satire and humor. This is indicative of a larger trend in views on teen girl films. A real
teen girl's life may revolve around passing midterms or trying to fit in at school, but a film about
those struggles must views those struggles with humor. The personal drama in the lives of teenage
girls isn't taken seriously by this film or it's marketing, and critics and studios don't think it should
be. At first glance, the theatrical trailer for Mean Girls fulfills all clichés the 'high school' or 'teen
girl' genre. Our protagonist, Cady, is the new girl school, who's been homeschool her entire life. Her
new nerdy friends explain all the cliques of the school to her, including an introduction to each
member of the most popular group. It even sets up the stereotypical main

Teen Identity
The teen film genre aims to shatter the construct or provide moments of self–discovery to symbolize
how teens react against the adult world and struggles within society. At the end of the film the high
school a voiceover of Brian reading out a letter written by him to Mr Vernon, the teacher, effectively
embodies the teen process of finding their identity:
You see us as you want to see us –– in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions: a
brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. Correct?
That's the way we saw each other at 7:00 this morning. We were brainwashed.
The opening scene acts as commentary to a universal struggle: the relationship between teenagers
and their parents. Immediately, they are classified by their stereotypical high school identities which
ultimately analyzes the social class. After the opening credits, the camera focuses on the front of a
Mercedes Benz car, a "swank sedan" (Wood, 1986), framing its logo in close up to emphasise the
wealth of the owner, a character who is successful in Reagan's capitalist America. Claire and her
father are the occupants and her role as the rich popular girl or the princess is immediately
established. Her father's clothes reinforces their wealthy status as he wears a Burberry scarf and a
"Brooks Brothers suit" (Wood 1986). Claire is depicted as pretty, pristine, clean–cut and "exudes an
elite nonchalance"' (Shary, 2002). But her true character is revealed as more complex and infused

Teen Television Dram The Next Generation, By The Bell And...
Every television show falls into one genre or another. Whether its an Action, Comedy, Drama,
Adventure show, they all fall into the category of different types of television genres. The concept of
a genre can be used in "rhetoric, literary theory, media theory and more recently linguistics, to refer
to a distinctive type of 'text'" (Chandler, 1). Thus, every aspect of television exhibits a reliance on
genre in which becomes a principal factor of framing texts which support comprehension.
Throughout this essay, I will focus specifically on the genre of Teen TV Drama using the television
show Degrassi: The Next Generation, and comparing it to two other programs such as Saved by the

Presently, there are many iconic television shows that draw on the generic identity of teen drama for
instance, "Degrassi: The Next Generation."
Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood's, Degrassi: The Next Generation. Degrassi is known to be a very
popular television show that first started in the 1980's. It is a franchise of five television shows that
focus on the lives of young teenage students. Some of Degrassi franchise includes the kids of
Degrassi Street, Degrassi junior high, and Degrassi classic. However, in 2001, there was a new
addition of Degrassi that was premiered, Degrassi: The next generation. During its eight seasons, the
viewers kept up with numerous different regular teenagers who go to school at Degrassi High school
and learn to juggle school while being able to maintain a social life and basically just trying to fit in
and finding their place in the world.
Looking back to these three popular shows, we are able to discuss the central genre of teen drama.
However, when examining the three teen drama television shows, there are many focal points that
must be considered. As chandler mentioned before, genre is known to be a distinctive type of "text."
However, there are a number of things that must be considered when analyzing a genre. Not only do
we study the text, but also the creators and producers of the text, the effect the text has

Teenage Stereotypes
"Lazy," "Disrespectful," "Selfish," "Technology Crazed." These are just a few of the words that
come to mind when the typical adult describes the everyday teenager. To some, these descriptions
are taken as a given fact and lack recognition of the issue this poses to the individuals on the
receiving end of such. This is the exact issue present in discrimination and stereotyping. For years, a
specific group of individuals has been reduced to the negative connotations presented against them
by every other group that lacks such quality such as their race, gender, appearance, age ...etc. Every
instance applicable contains the common ground in which the other groups fail to recognize the
harm in their superficial classifications of one another due to narrow–minded tendencies. This is the
basis to every single form of discrimination. An incredibly oppressed group who is by far, no
stranger to these circumstances are teens who continuously receive the hostility of adults for simply
belonging to their age group. Present day teenagers have come to be placed in an inaccurate box that
classifies them as a selfish, immature group by adults due several factors, the most prominent being
the media and the form it introduces teens to the average adult. The constant incorrect portrayal of
teens in movies, t.v. and other platforms has caused adult audiences to believe these classifications
and thus, cause several issues to be inflicted upon teens in several areas of their lives that calls for

Teens And Teen Depression
Teen depression is a major mental health issue that affects every one in five teens. It controls how a
teen behaves overall, and causes consistent sorrow in the teen. It is not an issue that you can just
"get–over", it takes treatment and outside help to truly fight this mental illness. Not only does it
emotionally and physically exhaust the person it affects, but it also greatly impacts the lives of an
everyday teenager.
Although teen depression may be viewed as a "light" issue, it truly is something that should be taken
seriously. Some not–so–fun facts about depression include:
30% of teenagers who have depression also develop a substance abuse issues
Approximately 20% of teenagers will experience depression before they become adults
Teenage suicide is the third leading cause of death in adolescents 10–24 years of age in the U.S
Around 12% of teens in rehab will relapse within the first year, and about 60% of teenagers who
suffer from clinical depression will experience another recurrence in adulthood
It honestly flabbergasting how such an epidemic isn't being discussed more considering the huge
impact is has on today's youth. Coupled with the fact that when it is discussed it commonly brushed

Teens And Mtv's Unrealistic Beliefs On Teen Pregnancy
Research article authors Nicole Martins and Robin E. Jensen, intended to study the relationship
between MTV's series "Teen Mom" reality show and teenagers' unrealistic beliefs about what is like
to be a teen mom. The seven motivations for asking "why" are used to convince the audience that it
is worthy of research by exploring the relationship with the intentions to discredit the previous
findings that state, "Teen Mom" and "16 and Pregnant" is one of the best public service campaign to
prevent teen pregnancy. This topic presents a number of complications in the lives of both induvial
and societal as a whole; providing evidence to answer the readers question on why this topic is of
importance and worthy of research. Yearly, $7 billion are taxed to all U.S citizens for welfare and
healthcare relating to teen pregnancy, driving the United States to the top as the highest rated
country with teen pregnancy. Consequently, almost half of teen mothers are unable to receive a high
school diploma; leading to lower occupation income for both fathers and mothers. I myself have
personally witnessed the toll it takes on one's life from three women who became mothers at a
young age. Many teens are unaware of the high risks and consequences of becoming pregnant or are
in denial of the possibility. Being able to be a part of their journey has increased my belief of the
importance on this topic and related research.
When comparing this article to a good literature review, it successfully provides an adequate
overview of previous research done and uses it to enhance the project at hand. When evaluating the
quality and relevance of this article, Martins and Jensen do an admirable job communicating the
purpose of research to the reader and organizing its literature review. The data from other studies is
in chronological order and are structured from broader studies to more specific ones which is seen
when the sources are cited. An analysis was provided after presenting the findings from previous
studies and the authors were able to communicate how those studies influenced their own research.
As a whole, the literature review was well organized by key ideas and topics that logically lead to

Teenage Maturity In Adulthood
We all love it when we see a teen going out of there way to help someone,we love it because this

is mature especially when this someone is a teen because it always seems like teens are lacking in
all common sense. As teens are struggling to figure out who they are, they are learning about
maturity, and how it affects them. Parents are watching their teens struggle to discover their path,
they are wondering why this generation is so behind and lacks the early signs of maturity. To begin,
the youth of our day are missing many signs of maturity. Tim Elmore in the article, The Mark of
Maturity, says, " This generation of kids is advanced intellectually but behind emotionally." Tim
Elmore is pointing out that modern teens are not very mature, but what is maturity? First off, Tim
says, "There's a portion when the child part of the brain has been pruned, but the adult portion is not

fully advanced past the stage of a child into a fully formed adult. In the article, The Mark of

Mass media is designed to reach large audiences with technology. Its purpose is meant to give us

In reality the media is not showing the real picture of the diverse world we live in. According to the
online recourse Common Sense Media, 74 percent of characters on TV are Caucasian, and 64
percent of video games characters are males. In reality most of the images teens see in the media are
edited, photo shopped, or enhanced with special effects. Even though a teen may be aware of this
fact, seeing the stereotyped image still has an affect on their body image. Often teens are not being
educated about sex; therefore, are learning about if from porn, or other forms of media. The
encouragement of sexual behavior is widely displayed in the media. Sex is being portrayed as more
casual, without commitment, contraception, or consequences. Teen dramas and music videos portray
the cool kids as the ones have sexual relations. The casual attitude about sex has sparked a new
trend involving cell phones called Sexting. This is when a teen takes a nude photo with their mobile

because teens are minors, sexting is considered just that. Sexting is very dangerous, because teens

Stereotypes Of Teens And Their Magazines
Teens and Their Magazines There is not a day that goes by where I don't witness a teenage girl in
the mall dressed very provocatively, wearing short skirts, tight shirts, and covered in make–up. The
group of girls she associates herself with is also dressed very sexy and in my opinion inappropriate

their boyfriends last night. Checking out stores for the latest trends, they also take a look at some

How is it that on one page in a magazine the topic is focused on "Being Yourself" and on the next

have the wrong interpretations of what's most important in this world. Girls are transforming
themselves to what they see portrayed in these magazines because they think those are the only
images that are accepted in this world. These magazines are corrupting these young girls, making
them believe that just being yourself is not enough. Many teen magazines are marketed towards
girls between the ages of thirteen and fifteen, but of course, these magazines are attracting younger
audiences as well. Carol Platt Liebau, who is a writer and political commentator, mentioned that

Smells Like Teen Spirit
This case study analyses the songwriting and production processes used in making "Smells Like
Teen Spirit", the epochal song quickly hailed as the anthem of the young generation after its release.
The song was written by Kurt Cobain, frontman of the grunge band Nirvana in 1991 and produced
by Buch Vig during the same year. According to a research conducted by Dr. Grierson (Gray, 2015),
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the most iconic song ever created thanks to its simple composition and
memorability. One of the most distinctive aspects of the song is the four–chord guitar riff invented
by Kurt Cobain using a distinct syncopated strumming pattern. The artist admitted he was trying to
write the ultimate pop song, taking inspiration from the main riff from Boston's "More Than a
Feeling" as well as from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The aggressive riff was used during the intro and the choruses to create an alternating loud and quiet
dynamic and separate different sections of the song. Cobain created an essential song structure using
a linear verse–prechorus–chorus format which is very common in popular music. The only
exception to this scheme is represented by the solo part that functions as a bridge between the
second chorus and the third and last verse. Following the same minimal approach, the harmonic
progression follows a very basic pattern consisting of only four chords (F–Bb–Ab–Db) repeated
throughout the whole track.
Yet for the powerful guitar's foundation, it probably was the singular progression of the vocal
melody that gave the song its known dynamic force. About Cobain's talent for the composition of

Teen Suicide According to Maureen and Kayla (78), "adolescent depression is a serious problem
affecting 10.7% of all teens and 29.9% of high school students" whereby, 17% of the latter are

with which the issue needs to be addressed with because, ostensibly, most of the depression cases,
which ultimately lead to suicide incidences among teens, are still going unrecognized. Moreover, as
American Psychological Association asserts, the primary cause of suicidal distress include social,
environmental, and psychological factors (par. 2). Additionally, the former also notes that suicide
risk factors vary with certain aspects including age, ethnic group, stressful life events, family
dynamics, and gender among other factors. In precision, it is admissible that despite the many
aspects that are supposed to be the main cause of suicide cases among teens, failure to recognize and
treat, or rather, address the causative agents of suicidal conditions could be the primary reason for
the rampancy regarding the issue. Therefore, if, for instance, medical practitioners and parents
among other involved individuals seek to curb teen suicide, it first necessitates their understanding
of the problem including reasons that might lead a teenager to develop suicidal thoughts.
Contrary to American Psychological Association's supposition that "mental illness is the leading risk
factor for suicide," in

Teen Identity in The Breakfast Club

  • 1. The Breakfast Club And Teen Identity 1 Ethan Wynne English 101 Sam Lackey October 2, 2014 The Breakfast Club and Teen Identity The movie The Breakfast Club takes viewers on a comedic tour of the ups and downs of adolescence. The Breakfast Club, directed by John Hughes, focuses on the events that unfold between five very different high school students during a Saturday detention. Even though the movie was shot in the 1980 's the characters portrayal is still relatable in a way to a lot of people today. Director John Hughes takes us on a comedic ride with what seems like another typical "teen movie" while still portraying a few life lessons along the way and exposing some truths behind stereotyping. Anyone who has ever been a high school student can probably find some way to relate to the characters in the film. The movie revolves around 5 students who for various reasons have been sent to Saturday detention by principle Vernon. The principle asks each of the students to write a one–page paper on who they think they are. As the day progresses, we see the teens begin to bond with each other and find out about each other and themselves. The film begins by introducing each of the five characters. John Hughes gives us five common archetypes with each of his characters including: a jock, a popular princess, a geek, a criminal, and basket case. These generic characters make it easier for the audience to relate to one of the characters in the film. Andy, the jock, is the generic high school athlete, or so it seems. ... • 2. Teen Film : Are Teen Movies Appealing To Their Audience Teen Film is a film genre, the targeted audience of teen film is teenagers and young adults. The setting of this genre is often set in high schools and colleges. Main themes in teen film include love, rebellion, peer pressure, conflict with parents and friends or alienation etc. This essay will discuss why teen films are so appealing to their audience. Adolescents in order to obtain peer recognition, eager to independence, strong rebellion, the establishment of self–image, teens can self– identification though teen films. Some teen films areas that will be talked about are themes, people groups, locations and storylines. To begin with, there are many reasons why teen films are so appealing to their audience. Starting with the theme, Teen films appeal to teenagers and young adults. One of the reasons is that teens love the central themes and love to watch. The topics around teens film usually include the theme of breaking the status quo, peer pressure, friendship and includes meaningful theme. Teens love watching teen films because the scenes in the movie and experiences are the same for themselves, for example, in "High School Musical" the main theme of this movie is "The Start of Something New". In the film "High School Musical" teens are always facing issues that they don't want to face, work that they don't want to do, even some awesome opportunities that teens are scared to take part in. • 3. To Be True to Yourself in a World That Is Constantly... To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly making you something else is a great achievement All of us possess qualities that differentiate us from other human beings. These distinguishing features could be more or less highlighted in appearance, mindset or capabilities, but they will always persist and determine the nature of our personality. Unfortunately these characteristic attributes are deteriorating as humanity is moulding us into the "perfect person" influencing us to stray away from who we are (our so called "insignificant" selves) to what is desirable (a flawless model). Staying true to yourself means to stick to what you believe in and being whom you were meant to be, it means not sacrificing who you are to fit in with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Anastasia Goodstein, from Huffington Post, "80 percent of girls have purchased an item as a result of an ad in a teen magazine and 63 percent trust magazine ads." As a result girls become convinced that they require particular fashions to belong in a society that emphasizes materialism. Moreover, most of the fashion, diet and lifestyle advice is directed toward being desirable to men. Magazines stress sexuality as a central identity, minimizing all other attributes. The girls reading teen magazines begin to digest and trust the message that they are only sexual objects. Peer pressure is the influence exerted by a social group or an individual, encouraging other persons to change their attitudes, values, or behaviours in order to conform to group norms. Peer pressure is most commonly associated with youth, in part because most youth spend large amounts of time in schools and other fixed groups that they do not choose and are seen as lacking the maturity to handle pressure from friends. Peer pressure can also have positive effects when people are pressured toward positive behaviour, such as volunteering for charity or excelling in academics or athletics, by their peers. However Risk taking behaviour is seemingly the most common as these same people engage in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Examples Of Stereotypes In Teenage Movies According to Campbell and Kean, teen movies are filled with stereotypes which can be divided into five categories: jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, goths and stoners (Campbell and Kean 274). For the purpose of this essay, they will be referred to as princesses (formerly cheerleaders), loners (formerly goths) and rebels (formerly stoners). In this essay, I will argue that 10 Things I Hate About You does not have the mentioned stereotypes. In 10 Things I Hate About You the main characters can be divided into these categories. Kat Stratford is the loner. She is described by Cameron James as "anti sociable". A student of L. Bianca is the princess. Bianca is pretty, which is confirmed by Cameron and Joey who are both trying to date her. In the beginning of the movie Bianca is described by Cameron's friend Michael as "conceited", which would argue that Bianca is self–centered. She is obedient to whatever her father says. For example, when her father says that Bianca cannot date until Kat does, Bianca is annoyed by this, but accepts it and does not actually date until Kat does. Patrick Verona is the rebel. • 5. Representation of Sexuality in Tv With reference to relevant cultural theories analyse the representation of sexuality in a film/television text of your choice. I have chosen to look at and analyse a television text. It is a TV drama aimed at a teenage audience called Skins. I chose this particular text as it focuses upon many different characters and scenarios in regards to sexuality and this forms a basis for analysis and evaluation. Skins also focuses upon Teenage sexuality, specifically, which I believe is a broad and interesting subject to analyse with many opportunities to elaborate. Skins is a British teen drama, which was aired on Channel 4 on terrestrial television and E4 on digital television. It has had 2 seasons consisting of 19 episodes altogether. Skins ... The further 'off the rails' Cassie goes, the more extreme the sexual situations, at one point 'courting' a female and then a few minutes after the female leaves a male arrives. "Sexuality strongly influences people's identity." (Op. cit. p.22) And at this point in the series we find that Cassie has a very mixed up idea about who she is and what she wants. This can also be seen in Season 1 when Maxxies best friend Anwar refuses to tell his parents about Maxxies sexuality due to their religious beliefs. We see that Maxxie is torn between who he is and whom Anwar wants him to be and this puts the friendship under great strain resulting in Maxxie refusing to turn up to Anwars party. "Gay adolescents who are more conventional in their gender characteristics have the option of passing as straight and many do." (Op. cit. p. 461) This situation happens a lot in real life but can be the cause of many problems, both for the person dealing with feelings of homosexuality and hiding them and those around that person. Many people have reported having feelings of being 'trapped within themselves' and having pent up aggression due to being in such a situation, which isn't hard to believe when we think that adolescence is when we discover ourselves sexually. • 6. Nannette Burstein American Teen AMERICAN TEEN: A documentary filled with scripted spontaneity and a slight insight to reality explores the stereotypical lives of five high–school seniors. Kaylee O'Dwyer talks about the truth behind this popular film, "American Teen." 'American Teen,' directed by Nanette Burstein, is a documentary film set in a small town in Indiana. The film follows the lives of five high–school teenagers through their final year of high–school in a way that hasn't been perceived since 'The Breakfast Club'. The film over–exaggerates the problems, demands and complications the modern generations are facing today by combining candid footage with false, staged events. The goal is less to provide a slice of reality than it is to estimate a fictionalized version of that reality through the inclusion of re–enactments, dramatisations, voice– overs and other techniques, deceiving viewers into believing that what they're seeing is actually real. The scene of Megan sending around Erica's picture to the whole school captures the replies and comments all the students were making. In the late 1990's when the documentary was made, the implication was that they do not. However, with the internet's advancements and the accessibility of communication with massive amounts of people, teenagers today can form authentic cultures that are not contaminated by the corporate media. When the documentary was produced, media exposure was limited to private and expensive mediums such as television, movies and radio. These outlets were plagued with marketing agendas designed to sell products under the guise of authentic music and entertainment. Formerly non–existent cultural archetypes such as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The media chooses to portray and sell sex, violence, drama and role models because it appeals to teenagers' biological and evolutionary instincts. The excessive amounts of sex hormones being produced in teenagers boosts libido causing displays of eroticism to be very alluring. The music presented is mostly homogenous and simple to promote familiarity and emotional response. Had these businesses tried to sell celibacy, indifference and pariahs, their profits would have declined. In The Merchants of Cool, Rushkoff goes to a teenage party to survey rising trends and notices a strange phenomenon. The girls dancing in front of his camera seemed to be selling the same exaggerated sex appeal that corporations were selling to the teenagers. He labeled this sensation a sort of "giant feedback loop" which implied that, since corporations try to mirror teenage behavior and then pervert that into a more explicit version to sell back, which in turn causes teenagers to emulate the corporation's behavior, teenagers are incapable of having a genuine culture to call their own, much like the young ... • 8. The Cross And The Switchblade By David Wilkerson In his book, The Cross and the Switchblade, David Wilkerson explains how his ministry started. Over 15 million people have read his book which was published in 1962 through The Berkley Publishing Group, and in 1969, his book became a Hollywood motion picture that reached over 50 million people. Wilkerson did not stop at this book. In fact, he continued to write over 30 more books. (Worldchallenge.org, 2014, pg. 1) With that said, The Cross and the Switchblade 's thesis statement is that the Holy Spirit is in charge. David Wilkerson, a country preacher from Pennsylvania, is the founder of Teen Challenge. This organization started in 1958 and still runs today as a ministry to save those with habits that are life controlling. Teen Challenge has become one of the most effective ways to reach out to teenagers and young adults who are dealing with issues related to gangs, drugs, and alcohol. However, the road to success was very challenging for Wilkerson and his team. (Worldchallenge.org, 2014, pg. 1) Anyone who picks up The Cross and the Switchblade is Wilkerson 's potential audience. He wrote this book in order to share his journey of starting the ministry that we now call Teen Challenge. Most likely, Pentecostals will read this story. Even so, this book can also be an instrument in salvation for others. I believe that Wilkerson understood both of these statements and, thus, wrote his book in such a way to minister to all peoples. • 9. Are Teen Movies Get It Wrong? Being a young adult, constantly circling the edge of the abyss of adulthood, is one of the most critically important and talked about moments in a person's life. That's why 'bildungsroman' novels have their own section in Barnes and Nobles and why teen movies are still one of the most popular genres: because the transition into adulthood is fascinating. And yet, most acclaimed teen movies get it wrong. From John Bender's borderline rape–y advances towards Claire in The Breakfast Club and still getting to kiss the girl to (insert another example), most films that focus around young adults simply aren't accurate and don't portray the realities of being a young adult. Ghost World is suburbia, complete with the strip malls and dinky themed diners. It's hellish for Enid and Rebecca and yet, they're seemingly stuck. Ghost World is a representation of the entire youth experience, something out of a teenage nightmare and a universal experience: the yearning to escape and simultaneously the possibility that you never will, highlighted through Enid and Rebecca's characters. It's an unspecified location thus it's everywhere. A ghost world is something you carry around with you. Throughout the film, Zwigoff attempts to make a point of the truth of growing up is difficult; it's about a desire to fit in while also hating that you care what your peers thing of you. Additional tension is created with the fact that both Enid and Rebecca internalize their struggles and don't communicate openly with one another, an all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

High School Confidential : Notes On Teen Movies While high school in reality is full of surprises and twisty roads, teen television shows and movies are based off a strict set of conventions that allude to other teen films. In David Denby 's "High School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies," he describes the typical movie storyline and characters: the blonde, superficial cheerleaders that make up the popular crowd, along with the buff, handsome jocks versus the social outcasts comprised of geeks and freaks. Denby continues to explain the nature of these two social standings, including how the "cool group" bullies anyone below them. Entertainment Weekly awarded the series its highest grade of "A", while the New York Magazine designated "Greatest Teen Drama of All Time" to Gossip Girl, as well as naming the series as "Best Show Ever" in 2008. In 2009, Rolling Stone named the series as "TV 's Hottest Show." Gossip Girl had people hooked throughout its six season for a variety of reasons. Firstly, it provided an outlet for entertainment and it satisfied people's wealthy and superficial fantasies without the guilt. Mary McNamara of the LA Times fell for "the leggy glamour of it, the pretty rich girls at cocktail parties, the rumpled sexiness of those school uniforms, the gothic romance of stone–mansioned New York". While Gossip Girl portrayed the teenagers with upscale lives in a glamorous fashion, it doesn't take away from identifying with the teenage struggles and dilemmas one may face. Teenage depression is a serious mental health problem that causes teens to have the persistent feeling of sadness and lack of interest in activities. Depression changes the way teens think, feel, and behave. Some people may wonder why depression is even a concern, but depression itself causes two thirds of suicides (Department of Health). Most people don't know what causes depression, the most common causes of depression are biological chemistry, hormones, it can also be inherited; some people's depression stems from childhood trauma, or having negative thoughts that give you a negative mood. There are chemicals in the brain that if abnormal or impaired the function of nerve receptors and nerve systems change, leading to depression. Inheriting depression is not simple, no one simply "inherits" depression from their mother or father, each person inherits a unique combination of genes from their mother and father, and certain combinations can predispose them to a particular illness (Department of Health). Childhood trauma, such as sexual or physical abuse, domestic violence, neglect or parental loss, can have long–lasting consequences, researchers are exploring the effects of early trauma on the stress– response systems (Department of Health) that can later can lead to depression later in life. • 12. Perk Of Being A Wallflower, And The Perks Of Being A... To the average American teenager, high school may have seemed like a real–life nightmare. So why is it that so many movies today revolve around this hellish concept? According to David Denby, the author of "High–School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies", there is a whole genre of these teen films. As explained by Denby, such genre films include stereotypical male and female villains of the social queen or jock type, mixed up emotions and teens rising above the "poisonous system of status, snobbery and exclusion" that is commonly known as high school (Denby 367). By this definition, the film The Perks of Being a Wallflower can be categorized as a teen film. Based on the book published in 1999, The Perks of Being a Wallflower follows Charlie ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, for the majority or teens, there is a considerable amount of teen angst that comes from this emotional growth. When depicted in movies, Denby explains that "these films arise from remembered hurts which then get recast in symbolic form." (Denby 369). In Denby's example, the main character may have suffered from the death of a parent and thus "is ill equipped for the emotional pressures of school." (Denby 369). This can be seen to be incredibly true for the main character of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Through out the film, there are memories brought up from Charlie's past about his best friend's suicide, his Aunt's Death, and his past sexual abuse. For example, when Sam kisses Charlie and rubs his leg, Charlie gets flashbacks of a similar situation in which his adult Aunt sexually abuses him. Due to his past, Charlie is depicted as unable to cope with the problems he faces, through his actions over the course of the film. Charlie takes a passive role in his life. For example, when his sister is abused by her boyfriend, Charlie does not step in. He also doesn't speak up when Mary Elizabeth declares that she and Charlie are dating, though he clearly doesn't have any interest in her. From the audience's point of view, it is known that his passive actions are a result of his emotional problems. Heathers is a dark teen movie where the bullies are killed off in an attempt to clean out the school. Peer pressure and bullying are a necessary part of the teen genre because of how big a part it takes in teen society. Almost every film genre is based around groups of people who exist in real life. People who are ten through nineteen make up over one tenth of the earth's population. This creates a demand for films based upon the issues and hardships they go through. Just like how adults can relate to movies about people barely making enough money to pay bills or working in a boring office. Who else would be the antagonist in a teen movie except for bullies or those who peer pressure kids? These seem to be the biggest problems teenagers face and that is why it is always the issue in teen movies. Heathers starts off with a group of female teen bullies practically running a school. What are usually titled as "academic writings" might more accurately be described as methods of terminologies that scholars use to define their areas of expertise. Academic writings are usually publications that are written for a specific audience and both provides useful information and persuasive content that guides readers over intellectual boundaries. The three main characteristics that an academic writing consists of include using a specific tone, creating an outline before writing, and researching over the content that the writing is about. A type of writing that is not considered as academic writing, but should be, is teen magazines. There are several teen magazines in convenience stores or waiting rooms that target a specific vulnerable audience that happens to be teenagers. Magazines share the similar characteristics that an academic writing possesses, therefore teen magazines should be considered as academic writings. When reading academic writings, the following questions are usually asked inside the mind of the reader. What is the message or point in the text that the author is trying to convey? Does an explanation of his research exist? Is he reporting the data collected? What is he arguing of the results or of the outcome? By asking all of these questions, the comprehension of understanding the significance of academic writing becomes clearer. The author of the essay "High–School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies," David Denby, purpose was to explain the stereotypical high school movie genre. Most teen movies follow certain criteria that some may feel has little reflection on what high school is truly like while others may feel these movies are exactly what high school is like. In typical teen movies, there are usually the cool kids, the popular cheerleader with the jock boyfriend, and that outsider nerd or outcast. Where that cool kids control the playground and the outcast just try to fit in and be part of the cool clique or stay as far away as possible and avoid humiliation. The film "Easy A" proves to follow this exact pattern that Denby speaks of, just as stereotypical as any other teen film. The movie chosen to be written about was "Easy A" where the director, Will Gluck, directs a film about a student, Olive Penderghast, who feels bad for those who do not necessarily fit in. Therefore, she allows them to spread rumors about her and certain sexual exploitations. In doing so she becomes the school's most talked about student, while jeopardizing her reputation, while at the same time making some financial gains. We were children, but see the thing here is that teens are still children who are having other children. 16 year olds do not just wake up thinking they want to have a baby, most of the time it just happens without being planned. Teens often do not think about what life would be like as a parent which is easy to happen and we should be informed on the reasons why and what it really is like. At the end of the film the high school a voiceover of Brian reading out a letter written by him to Mr Vernon, the teacher, effectively embodies the teen process of finding their identity: You see us as you want to see us –– in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions: a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. Correct? That's the way we saw each other at 7:00 this morning. We were brainwashed. • 30. Teenage Stereotypes "Lazy," "Disrespectful," "Selfish," "Technology Crazed." These are just a few of the words that come to mind when the typical adult describes the everyday teenager. To some, these descriptions are taken as a given fact and lack recognition of the issue this poses to the individuals on the receiving end of such. This is the exact issue present in discrimination and stereotyping. For years, a specific group of individuals has been reduced to the negative connotations presented against them by every other group that lacks such quality such as their race, gender, appearance, age ...etc. Every instance applicable contains the common ground in which the other groups fail to recognize the harm in their superficial classifications of one another due to narrow–minded tendencies. This is the basis to every single form of discrimination. An incredibly oppressed group who is by far, no stranger to these circumstances are teens who continuously receive the hostility of adults for simply belonging to their age group. Present day teenagers have come to be placed in an inaccurate box that classifies them as a selfish, immature group by adults due several factors, the most prominent being the media and the form it introduces teens to the average adult. The constant incorrect portrayal of teens in movies, t.v. and other platforms has caused adult audiences to believe these classifications and thus, cause several issues to be inflicted upon teens in several areas of their lives that calls for ... It controls how a teen behaves overall, and causes consistent sorrow in the teen. Not only does it emotionally and physically exhaust the person it affects, but it also greatly impacts the lives of an everyday teenager. • 33. Teens And Mtv's Unrealistic Beliefs On Teen Pregnancy Research article authors Nicole Martins and Robin E. Jensen, intended to study the relationship between MTV's series "Teen Mom" reality show and teenagers' unrealistic beliefs about what is like to be a teen mom. The seven motivations for asking "why" are used to convince the audience that it is worthy of research by exploring the relationship with the intentions to discredit the previous findings that state, "Teen Mom" and "16 and Pregnant" is one of the best public service campaign to prevent teen pregnancy. This topic presents a number of complications in the lives of both induvial and societal as a whole; providing evidence to answer the readers question on why this topic is of importance and worthy of research. Yearly, $7 billion are taxed to all U.S citizens for welfare and healthcare relating to teen pregnancy, driving the United States to the top as the highest rated country with teen pregnancy. Consequently, almost half of teen mothers are unable to receive a high school diploma; leading to lower occupation income for both fathers and mothers. I myself have personally witnessed the toll it takes on one's life from three women who became mothers at a young age. Many teens are unaware of the high risks and consequences of becoming pregnant or are in denial of the possibility. Being able to be a part of their journey has increased my belief of the importance on this topic and related research. When comparing this article to a good literature review, it successfully provides an adequate overview of previous research done and uses it to enhance the project at hand. When evaluating the quality and relevance of this article, Martins and Jensen do an admirable job communicating the purpose of research to the reader and organizing its literature review. The data from other studies is in chronological order and are structured from broader studies to more specific ones which is seen when the sources are cited. An analysis was provided after presenting the findings from previous studies and the authors were able to communicate how those studies influenced their own research. As a whole, the literature review was well organized by key ideas and topics that logically lead to the research Martins and Jensen were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Teenage Maturity In Adulthood We all love it when we see a teen going out of there way to help someone,we love it because this teen just has something about themselves that stands out from other teens. It almost seems like this kid is an adult, but that's not right it's just that this kid is very mature. We all love it when someone is mature especially when this someone is a teen because it always seems like teens are lacking in all common sense. As teens are struggling to figure out who they are, they are learning about maturity, and how it affects them. Parents are watching their teens struggle to discover their path, they are wondering why this generation is so behind and lacks the early signs of maturity. To begin, the youth of our day are missing many signs of maturity. Tim Elmore in the article, The Mark of Maturity, says, " This generation of kids is advanced intellectually but behind emotionally." First off, Tim says, "There's a portion when the child part of the brain has been pruned, but the adult portion is not fully formed." How do clients learn about the services that the agency offers? How do most clients get to the agency? There are centers for adolescent boys and girls who are age 12 to 17, and adult centers for women and men who are age 18 and up. Teen Challenge not only serves the client, but they also serve the clients' families by trying to rebuild their relationships that were shattered by drugs and alcohol. Eligibility of the program is based on a tuition system for some of the students. There is an initial induction fee of $1350 up front, a medical fee of $170, and monthly tuition is $1050 as well. This is a huge negative in my eyes, however, a majority of the students that come there can not afford these prices and the staff will negotiate a monthly price. This is a Christian ran facility, and they do not like to turn anyone away in need of help. Often teens are not being educated about sex; therefore, are learning about if from porn, or other forms of media. The encouragement of sexual behavior is widely displayed in the media. Sex is being portrayed as more casual, without commitment, contraception, or consequences. Teen dramas and music videos portray the cool kids as the ones have sexual relations. The casual attitude about sex has sparked a new trend involving cell phones called Sexting. This is when a teen takes a nude photo with their mobile phone and sends it to another mobile phone. It is against the law to view and distribute child porn; because teens are minors, sexting is considered just that. Girls are transforming themselves to what they see portrayed in these magazines because they think those are the only images that are accepted in this world. These magazines are corrupting these young girls, making them believe that just being yourself is not enough. Many teen magazines are marketed towards girls between the ages of thirteen and fifteen, but of course, these magazines are attracting younger audiences as well. • 39. Smells Like Teen Spirit This case study analyses the songwriting and production processes used in making "Smells Like Teen Spirit", the epochal song quickly hailed as the anthem of the young generation after its release. The song was written by Kurt Cobain, frontman of the grunge band Nirvana in 1991 and produced by Buch Vig during the same year. According to a research conducted by Dr. Grierson (Gray, 2015), "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the most iconic song ever created thanks to its simple composition and memorability. One of the most distinctive aspects of the song is the four–chord guitar riff invented by Kurt Cobain using a distinct syncopated strumming pattern. The artist admitted he was trying to write the ultimate pop song, taking inspiration from the main riff from Boston's "More Than a Feeling" as well as from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The aggressive riff was used during the intro and the choruses to create an alternating loud and quiet dynamic and separate different sections of the song. Cobain created an essential song structure using a linear verse–prechorus–chorus format which is very common in popular music. The only exception to this scheme is represented by the solo part that functions as a bridge between the second chorus and the third and last verse. Following the same minimal approach, the harmonic progression follows a very basic pattern consisting of only four chords (F–Bb–Ab–Db) repeated throughout the whole track. Yet for the powerful guitar's foundation, it probably was the singular progression of the vocal melody that gave the song its known dynamic force. About Cobain's talent for the composition of ... • 40. Teens And Teen Suicide Teen Suicide According to Maureen and Kayla (78), "adolescent depression is a serious problem affecting 10.7% of all teens and 29.9% of high school students" whereby, 17% of the latter are supposed to have contemplated suicide in general. Notably, this statistic conveys the seriousness with which the issue needs to be addressed with because, ostensibly, most of the depression cases, which ultimately lead to suicide incidences among teens, are still going unrecognized. Moreover, as American Psychological Association asserts, the primary cause of suicidal distress include social, environmental, and psychological factors (par. 2). Additionally, the former also notes that suicide risk factors vary with certain aspects including age, ethnic group, stressful life events, family dynamics, and gender among other factors. In precision, it is admissible that despite the many aspects that are supposed to be the main cause of suicide cases among teens, failure to recognize and treat, or rather, address the causative agents of suicidal conditions could be the primary reason for the rampancy regarding the issue. Therefore, if, for instance, medical practitioners and parents among other involved individuals seek to curb teen suicide, it first necessitates their understanding of the problem including reasons that might lead a teenager to develop suicidal thoughts.
