1. A Girl of the Streets and Other Stories
A Girl of the Streets and Other Stories The book Maggie: a girl of the streets and other
stories is by Stephen Crane first published in 1893. Maggie is the first female character to be
named although she has a mother whose name remains withheld through out the story.
Maggie is born in a squalid and chaotic family. She has two brothers Jimmie and Timmie.
Both parents are alcoholics and are always engaged in fighting about issues that the author
describes as petty. These parents are said to meet their anger on their three children and so
these children in a way have to ways of avoiding their parents. At some point in time,
maggie’ s father and her brother Timmie pass away and she is left with a ruthless mother
and a brother (Jimmie) who has also grown to be a fierce fighter fighting her every time
feels like. Maggie in one occasion decides to run away with another character (Pete). After
realizing that Maggie had slept with this character (who is a bartender and equally poor)
her mother blames her for disgracing their family and almost disowns her. After spending
not many days with Pete, Maggie gets “ dumped” for another woman who the author has
called Nellie. After being left by Pete Maggie tries to go back home but her mother does not
accept this idea. Finally she (Maggie) finds her way into the streets and finally starts
engaging in prostitution.…………………………………Place an order with us to get a customized
