Globalization, the ongoing process of interdependence and integration of economies, societies,
and cultures that occurs through a worldwide network of global communication and trade, has
rapidly developed over the past 25 years to the point where it is a reaiity today (Mendenhall,
Osland, Bird, Oddou, & Maznevski, 2008). It has become widely accepted that "the world is
at once borderless, multicultural and a burgeoning hybrid of cultures. Expanded tourism, the
dissemination of pop culture, global migration, Internet communities—all these have led to
unprecedented worldwide connectedness" (Rosen, Digh, Singer, & Phillips, 2000, p. 22).
Not only is it true that "the world isfiat" (Friedman, 2005, p. 5), but theworld is also one of "...high chaos
and continuous change" (Marquardt &
Berger, 2000, p. 1), in which a rapidly grow-
ing number of companies "operate as if the
entire world were a single entity" (Marquardt
& Berger, p. 4). Eormer U.S. Secretary of
Labor Robert Reich (1991) declared in his
book The Work of Nations, "We are living
through a transformation that will rearrange
the pohtics and economics of the coming cen-
tury. There will be no national products or
technologies, no national corporations, no
national industries. There will no longer be
national economies" (p. 3). The reality of
globalization means that the world has
become so interconnected that "the only way
to succeed is by competing with everyone
from everywhere for everything. Starting
now" (Sirkin, Hemerling, &C Bhattaccharya,
2008, p. 20).
This high degree of interconnectedness,
which is being brought about through the
impact of technology on communication,
knowledge creation and information sharing
(Marquardt & Berger, 2000) in today's orga-
nizations, is combining with the chaos and
continuous change of today's business envi-
ronment to create a highly dynamic, complex,
borderless, multicultural context within
which businesses must learn to operate or
suffer the consequences (Rosen et al., 2000).
Thus, the challenge of globalization is that
organizations must "adapt or die" (McCal-
lum, 2001, p. 73); "adaptability will be the
characteristic that ultimately most distin-
guishes successful from unsuccessful
enterprises" (p. 74). Organizations must find
constructive ways to adapt to survive, and the
most adaptable organizations—those that
possess a high degree of dynamic capability
(Winter, 2003)—will be best positioned to
explore the possibilities hidden amid the
chaos and to respond with innovative solu-
tions to the complex challenges they face. The
challenge is daunting for even the best-pre-
pared organizations.

because of it), leaders continue to be unpre-
pared for global contexts. A recent survey of
senior HR executives revealed that a shortage
of global executive talent was the primary
concern in their firm’s global expansion plans

research at the Najafi Global Mindset Insti-
tute at Thunderbird School of Global
Management. This article discusses the criti-
c a l i m p o r t a n c e o f G l o b a l M i n d s e t

A Whole New Global
Mindset for Leadership
In 1969, Howard Perlmutter was among the
first researchers to point out that running suc-
cessful global operations required a whole
new mindset. This gives pause for reflection.
How did this mindset differ from status quo
leadership? Perlmutter found that global
leaders needed to navigate increased com-
plexity in organizational culture, management
practices and recruitment of top talent (1969)
— the very domains human resources profes-
sionals are charged with developing. This
holds true today. Global leadership is excit-
ing, challenging and certainly complex (see
Exhibit 1). It has only been recently, however,
that the whole new mindset to which Perl-
mutter referred was scientifically defined by
the Najafi Global Mindset Institute at Thun-
derbird School of Global Management.

Organizations worldwide are showing increasing interest in knowledge management practices to address the contemporary challenges of today’s digital age. Knowledge is becoming a critical core asset to sustain competitive advantage and as a vehicle for continuous improvement and innovation. However, most of the developments in the knowledge management field are driven by international organizations or private commercial companies. Considering the impact of knowledge management practices, government organizations have the potential for significant improvements in performance, transformation, and the development of a more responsive citizen-centric government.
This article has two objectives: The first is to provide an overview of knowledge management and highlight the importance of this field of practice, and the second is to provide a case study of the successful implementation of knowledge management in a federal government organization in the United Arab Emirates. This article outlines the adopted approach and framework and elaborates on each of the implemented components. The presented case study and lessons learned are benchmarks for best practices and contribute to the existing experimental cases. This, in turn, should help organizations and researchers to better understand how public sector government organizations are perceiving and practicing knowledge management, which should enable them to reflect and propose improvements.

Globalization, the ongoing process of interdependence and integration of economies, societies,
and cultures that occurs through a worldwide network of global communication and trade, has
rapidly developed over the past 25 years to the point where it is a reaiity today (Mendenhall,
Osland, Bird, Oddou, & Maznevski, 2008). It has become widely accepted that "the world is
at once borderless, multicultural and a burgeoning hybrid of cultures. Expanded tourism, the
dissemination of pop culture, global migration, Internet communities—all these have led to
unprecedented worldwide connectedness" (Rosen, Digh, Singer, & Phillips, 2000, p. 22).
Not only is it true that "the world isfiat" (Friedman, 2005, p. 5), but theworld is also one of "...high chaos
and continuous change" (Marquardt &
Berger, 2000, p. 1), in which a rapidly grow-
ing number of companies "operate as if the
entire world were a single entity" (Marquardt
& Berger, p. 4). Eormer U.S. Secretary of
Labor Robert Reich (1991) declared in his
book The Work of Nations, "We are living
through a transformation that will rearrange
the pohtics and economics of the coming cen-
tury. There will be no national products or
technologies, no national corporations, no
national industries. There will no longer be
national economies" (p. 3). The reality of
globalization means that the world has
become so interconnected that "the only way
to succeed is by competing with everyone
from everywhere for everything. Starting
now" (Sirkin, Hemerling, &C Bhattaccharya,
2008, p. 20).
This high degree of interconnectedness,
which is being brought about through the
impact of technology on communication,
knowledge creation and information sharing
(Marquardt & Berger, 2000) in today's orga-
nizations, is combining with the chaos and
continuous change of today's business envi-
ronment to create a highly dynamic, complex,
borderless, multicultural context within
which businesses must learn to operate or
suffer the consequences (Rosen et al., 2000).
Thus, the challenge of globalization is that
organizations must "adapt or die" (McCal-
lum, 2001, p. 73); "adaptability will be the
characteristic that ultimately most distin-
guishes successful from unsuccessful
enterprises" (p. 74). Organizations must find
constructive ways to adapt to survive, and the
most adaptable organizations—those that
possess a high degree of dynamic capability
(Winter, 2003)—will be best positioned to
explore the possibilities hidden amid the
chaos and to respond with innovative solu-
tions to the complex challenges they face. The
challenge is daunting for even the best-pre-
pared organizations.

because of it), leaders continue to be unpre-
pared for global contexts. A recent survey of
senior HR executives revealed that a shortage
of global executive talent was the primary
concern in their firm’s global expansion plans

tute at Thunderbird School of Global
Management. This article discusses the criti-

A Whole New Global
Mindset for Leadership
In 1969, Howard Perlmutter was among the
first researchers to point out that running suc-
cessful global operations required a whole
new mindset. This gives pause for reflection.
How did this mindset differ from status quo
leadership? Perlmutter found that global
leaders needed to navigate increased com-
plexity in organizational culture, management
practices and recruitment of top talent (1969)
— the very domains human resources profes-
sionals are charged with developing. This
holds true today. Global leadership is excit-
ing, challenging and certainly complex (see
Exhibit 1). It has only been recently, however,
that the whole new mindset to which Perl-
mutter referred was scientifically defined by
the Najafi Global Mindset Institute at Thun-
derbird School of Global Management.

As creating great global pioneers should be a critical need for organizations in the global business world,why? there has been extensive research in this article on what?. In spite of this, there is limited research on the efficient worldwide initiative competency structure considering both its levels and measurements and on individual capabilities. The motivation behind this article is to make a hypothesis based integrative system that can be used in recognizing the skills containing global leadership. To achieve this purpose, an integrative literature review was completed? on competency theory and global leadership, bringing about the improvement of an integrative structure for global initiative competency.
Skills have been characterized with terms portraying certain individual attributes, practices, attitudes, qualities, and information, and many existing systems are combinations of these. In existing exploration, diverse sorts of measurements have regularly been combined and regarded as equivalents. A particular quality in one structure is supplanted with relating conduct in another. By and large, choice of important abilities has produced much contention since the significance of capabilities is observed to shift with the assignment and association included (Bird, 2012).
· In this article, worldwide leadership abilities are viewed as those all-inclusive qualities that empower people to play out their employment outside their own particular national and also authoritative culture, regardless of what their instructive or ethnically foundation is, what useful range their expected set of responsibilities speaks to, or what association they come from. While trying to assemble a more integrative system for worldwide initiative skills, this paper endeavors to apply a more synergistic approach and concentrate on likenesses over a variety of results, and on finding those sorts of abilities that are vital when working crosswise over societies – all around the world. The real organization of human resource management is organizational culture and its reformation and
management. Ethos is closely related to organizational strategy, structure and intention. It influences staff's
notice of job selection, evaluation training, and reward and so on. In addition to the normal pressures of manmanagement,
managers are now required to deal with challenges, friction and misunderstandings emanating
from cross ethnic differences. Effective management in the modern environment necessitates cross ethnic
competency in order to get the best out of a multiethnic team. With the growing significance of developing
economies in the global business environment, Human Resource Management is facing increased difficulty in
managing cross-border ethnic relationships. This paper of mine analyze the HR must be knowledgeable about
multiethnic factors on both the domestic and global fronts in Human Resource Management As Dr Zareen
Karani Araoz, President and founder of “Managing Across cultures, Karani Lam & Associates, says in
global conference , "For an employee who repeatedly takes a conference call from US at 3 a.m. regularly is a
major problem area, but he finds it difficult to articulate this to his client or his counterpart in the US, due to
fear. In an institutionalized environment, it is easy to learn to be frank, where saying “NO” is often appreciated
rather than saying “YES” and failing to deliver on the promise

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
