2. The first movie studio in the Hollywood region, Nestor Studios was originated in 1911 by Al Christie for
David Horsley in an ancient building on the northwest corner of sunset Boulevard and Gower Street. In
the same year, another fifteen Independents settled in Hollywood. The word Hollywood was coined by a
guy named H.J Whitley he was father of Hollywood.
By 1912 major motion picture companies had set up production near or in Los Angeles. In the early
1900s most moviemaking copyrights were held by Thomas Edison’s. Motion picture Patents Company in
New Jersey and filmmakers were often sued to stop their productions. To escape these filmmakers
began moving out west where Edison’s copyrights could not be forced. And after sometime Los Angeles
became the capital of the film industry.
D.W. Griffith was the first to make a motion picture in Hollywood. His 17 minute short film In Old
California was filmed for the Bio graph Company. Although Hollywood banned movie theaters but Los
Angeles had no such restriction. The first film by a Hollywood Studio Nestor Motion Picture Company
was shot on October 26, 1911. The Whitley home was used as its set and the unnamed movie was
filmed in the middle of their groves on the corner of Whitley Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard.
Nestor Company which was the first studio in Hollywood and it was established by the New Jersey. Four
major film making companies were Paramount, Warner Bros, RKO and Columbia they all had their
studios in Hollywood as did several minor companies and rental studios. In the 1920s Hollywood was the
fifth largest industry in the nation. By the early 1930s Hollywood had become well established as a big
film factory producing films that were predominantly opportunities for cinema goers to escape from the
humdrum reality of their daily lives into a world of fantasy. The studio system which was dominated by a
few big film companies such as MGM, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox and Universal, controlled the
production of films. Their distribution. And their exhibition in the cinemas that the studios owner.
The United States has one of the oldest film industries and largest in terms of revenue and Hollywood is
the primary nexus of the U.S film industry with established film study facilities such as the American film
institute, LA film school and NYFA being established in the area. However four of the six major film
studios are owned by East Coast companies. Only The Walt Disney Company which owns Walt Disney
Pictures, Touchstone pictures, Hollywood pictures, Lucas film. Limited the Pixar Animation studios and
Marvel Studios is fully based in southern California.

3. Harry, Albert and Sam these three brothers started the film making company with the name of
warner brothers. These three brothers began in the movie theatre business having acquired a movie
projector with which they showed films in the mining towns of Pennsylvania and Ohio. In the
beginning Sam and Albert Warner invested $150 to present life of an American fireman and The
Great Train Robbery. They opened there first theater in New castle, Pennsylvania in 1903. Later that
theater became a shopping center, dining and entertainment complex.
In 1904 the warner founded the Pittsburgh based Duquesne Amusement and Supply Company to
distribute films. In 1912 Harry warner hired an auditor named Paul Ashley chase. By the time of
World War 1 they had begun producing films and in 1918 the brothers opened the warner brother’s
studio on sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Sam and jack warner produced the pictures while harry
and Albert Warner and their auditor and now controller chase handled finance and distribution in
New York City. It was during World War 1 and their first nationally syndicated film was My Four
Years in Germany this movie was based on a famous book by former American Ambassador James
W.Gerard.
