INTRODUCTION
▪ American film industry is commonly referred as “Hollywood” because
of it’s famous symbol situated upon the hills have become a widely
accepted representation of American movie studios and movie stars.
▪ Hollywood film industry has created a great impact in worldwide
cinema. Now Hollywood film industry proves to be an example for
other industries by producing massive hits.
▪ Without any doubt American cinema soon became the most
dominant force in an emerging industry.
How Hollywood Evolved?
▪ The origins and development of the American film industry lies
between the period from 1895 to 1920.
▪ Hollywood introduced its first talking film “The Jazz Singer” in 1927.
This was an important evolution and since then Hollywood saw a
continuous rise.
▪ During this time the emerging industry developed into an important
popular medium, organised into clearly
defined exhibition, production,
and distribution elements.
▪ The period from 1930 to 1949 in American film industry was ruled by
five big studios known as the “Big Five”
▪ RKO’S “Becky Sharp (1937) was the first feature-lengthTechnicolor
film.
▪ Major hits from the “Big Five” studios such as Disney's SnowWhite
and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Silly Symphonies, The Old Mill.
▪ After massive success by “Big Five” studios, in 1949 the major studios
were forced to sell off the cinema chains that they owned by the US
government, after a court ruling that their practices were
monopolistic.
▪ The American film industry rapidly declined during the period of 1950
because people choose television over cinema.
▪ It wasn’t until the late 1980s that Hollywood studios fully recovered.
▪ After 1980s again Hollwood film industry saw a high rise in cinema
business as new film studios begin to emerge.
▪ Now by the end of 1980s there were six big studios ruling over The
American film industry.
▪ All of these companies are subsidiaries of major media
conglomerates
▪ Until this date these big companies rule over Hollywood, however
there are small studios as well that are contributing their effort in
American film industry.
▪ These major film studios have given us a lot of hit movies such as
Gone with theWind (1939), StarWars (1977),Titanic (1997), and
Avatar (2009). At present, American film studios collectively generate
several hundred movies per year.
▪ Hollywood has given recognition to many remarkable directors such
as Alfred Hitchcock, Francis Ford Copolla, James Cameron, Martin
Scorcese, Roman Polanski,Tim Burton, David Fincher, Christopher
Nolan and the list goes on.
▪ The list below shows those genres that are mostly
ppreffered by the major studios of Hollywood.
