2. Recent Initiatives (1)
• Special Framework for Spatial Planning of
Aquaculture (under public consultation)
– Carried out in close cooperation with the
entreprises concerned
– Covers marine and inner-land areas
– Identifies favorable areas for aquaculture
development, including around a significant
number of islands
– Avoids areas where there would be
incompatibility with other uses

• Special Framework for Spatial Planning of
Coastal Zones and Islands (under preparation)
– Provides for Integrated Management
– Foresees a mechanism of governence at regional
level with the involvement of the major authorities
and steakholders concerned
– Provides orientations for management following an
ecosystems-based approach
– Provides orientations for future development and
constructions in a rational, compatible and
sustainable way, paying also due attention to
possible effects of climate change

4. Recent Initiatives (3)
• Revision of the existing Frameworks for
Spatial Planning of the 12 Regions of Greece
– A Call for expression of interest was launched
recently (funding under ESPA/NSPD)
– The current Regional Spatial Plans are in place
since 2003
– 4 out of the 12 Regions are purely insular, while
a number of other islands belong to continental
Regions
– The new Regional Plans are intended to facilitate
the organisation of the economic activities on the
ground in an integrated and sustainable way

5. Recent Initiatives (4)
• Legislation for the protection of insular
wetlands
– A draft Presidential Decree (PD) was prepared in
close co-operation with scientists and
environmental NGOs
– Consultation on this PD has been completed and
final adjustments/amendments are under way
– Protection of insular wetlands can be beneficial
for biodiversity protection, as well as for the
development (eg, tourism) of the islands

• Green insular communities
– Carried out in close so-operation with KAPE/
Centre of Renewable Sources and Energy
Saving of Greece
– 50 M Euros allocated under ESPA
– Promotion of green actions on islands and/or
villages aiming at zero emmissions and zero
energy consumption (eg, electricity from RES,
smart networks & infrastructure, integrated
management of water resources, production of
biomass, integrated management of solid
wastes including recycling, ...) Thank you6
