OBJECTIVES AND CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS Foster all branches of soil science and their application, as well as to support soil scientists in their professional activities Facilitate information for politics and decision making and for the broad public EUROSOIL congress is the main event of the ECSSS. It shall cover all parts of the discipline and of ECSSS Renewal / revival of the ECSSS (revision of the statuses, establishment of a permanent secretariat, funds of ECSSS) Specific request to consider permanent link with the ESP
- 6. OBJECTIVES AND CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS Affordable congress (budget, sponsors, PCO selection) Inclusive congress (beyond the « pure » soil science…) and strong cooperation with ESP Congress main themes organized along the SDGs Call for symposia in summer 2018

OBJECTIVES AND CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS • SDG 1, No poverty, end poverty in all its forms everywhere • Target 1.4, By 2030, ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services, including microfinance • SDG 2, Zero Hunger: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture • Target 2.4 By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality

OBJECTIVES AND CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS • SDG 3, Good health and well-being: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages • Target 3.9 By 2030, substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemical and air, water and soil pollution and contamination • SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable • Target: there is no specific target focussing on soils > urban soils and their ES

OBJECTIVES AND CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS • SDG 15, Life on Land: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss • Target 15.3 By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world • SDG 13, Climate Action, Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts • No specific soil-related target defined
