Don DeLillo throughout White Noise confirms through his characters that the individual is capable
of expressing feelings instantaneously, but for the most part are calculated in their actions, and give
off a façade. With the vast use of characters, from Jack Gladney to the nun, we can take a closer
look at the individuals in the world filled with white noise. There is truly the possibility for human
kind to be honest down to the bone, for instance what Gladney expresses love for his children, even
the stepchildren. Although this possibility is true, people still talk and do things against their
emotions, or preference. People take on facades, and take part in the things they don't believe in
order to find an identity of their own. This identity crisis is enhanced by societal factors, and the
influence of media with technology. Thus mankind in White Noise is incapable of expressing their
true selves, without conflicting with their external image. It boils down to this, the emotions of the
individuals are very much true, but are not surfaced, rather they hide behind an image that is

Does the soul exist? If so, what is the soul? Moreover, what is its function in daily life? For
millennia, schools of philosophy have investigated these questions and attempted to answer them by
devising complex philosophies, which were in some cases completely alien to our modern ideas. In
this essay, I will discuss the Egyptian, Taoist, and Aristotelian views on the soul's function and
composition during life. Then, I will compare these philosophies and discuss which aspects of each
philosophy I find the most plausible from a realist's point of view. Concerning the composition and
function of the soul, I argue that the Aristotelian and Taoist philosophies are equally plausible, but
that the Egyptian philosophy also had plausible aspects. Ultimately, however, it is difficult to
determine which theory the most plausible (from a realist's perspective) without tackling the bigger
question "does the soul exist?"
The ancient Egyptians were soul dualists, meaning that they believed that a person had two or more
souls (in this case nine).1 In Egypt, one of the main purposes of the nine souls was to help the
deceased reach the "afterlife."2 In fact, the Egyptians believed that some souls only existed after
death, but I will not discuss these in this paper. Instead, I will focus on the role of the soul during

Vermeer and Albert Bierstadt. Both men came from different times and ethnic backgrounds.
Dutchman, Johannes Vermeer was born in the year 1632 and passed away in 1675. Over his lifetime
Vermeer used a style of painting that causing modern day historians and art lovers to struggle to
figure out how he painted such realistic scenes that mimicked photographs. His style combined
many pictorial depth cues while maintaining a strong sense of realism throughout the relatively few
paintings he produced. Next is Prussian artist Albert Bierstadt, who was born in the year 1830 and
passed away in 1903. Bierstadt is widely known for his highly realistic paintings of the American
West landscape. Combining pictorial depth cues and visual realism were his specialties, while
raising a large degree of 'illusionism' in his paintings. In his lifetime Bierstadt produced over 500
paintings, most of which pertained to the places he visited on his journey across the United States.
While Bierstadt and Vermeer were two very different men, their works shared common elements.

The photo that I chose for my print ad is of the Cardinal Pride Marching Band performing at the
state competition in Fort Dodge. It was taken by Rebecca Griffin before our performance, and the
band looks very stoic in their pre–competition formation. A photographic element used in this
picture is symmetry. The band is evenly balanced on each side with the drum major dressed in white
dividing the image in the center. I also left some negative space at the top of my ad. This keeps the

For this very reason, I decided to use a very catchy audio backing track from WeVideo's audio
library, which was royalty free. The audio starts with a large crescendo followed by a simple melody

Antoine Watteau's La Perspective (View through the Trees in the Park of Pierre Crozat) uses many
elements of the Rococo style of painting to instill a sense of intimacy. In this painting, members of
the elite society gather unceremoniously in a wooded clearing. The people make casual exchanges
as they mingle in the park. Trees and foliage dominate a majority of the painting. A small white
building can be seen in the background through a clearing in the trees. Watteau uses color,
composition, setting, and pose in the painting to create intimacy.
It is evident through the peoples clothing that these are in fact members of the elite. Both men and
women are clad in expensive, adorned clothing. They sit on the ground in their ornate clothes. While
the clothing appears formal, the event does not.
There is an overt sense of leisure and intimacy established through the social exchanges in this
painting. A man in the foreground is playing a guitar to a lady, which adds a cheery, relaxed mood.
On the right side of the painting, children play on the ground, which shows how this is a joyful
event. While there are many social interactions being made, the people in this painting are very
generalized. Watteau purposely does not paint many of the people's faces to put emphasis on the
landscape and setting.
The setting of La Perspective is most utilized to create intimacy. Set in a park in the middle of the

Jim Costello was born in Rochester, New York, and when he was a young boy his passion for art
showed (Jim Costello). Costello studied at the Ecole St. Luc art school during high school, and then
continued his art career in college. The following years of teaching, Costello moved his family to
northwest Virginia, and started to paint the landscapes and the different scenery around his house. In
Costello art work you can tell that he is a modern painter because he uses different shapes and bright
colors to bring the viewers eyes directly to his paintings. The title of his show called "Dynamics of
Desire: The Evocative Works of Jim Costello" make it seem as if his painting will have some type of
sexual content (Jim Costello). Although his painting displays naked women, he is trying to capture

The way that Wasarz framed this panel was that she put a border on the whole left side, and the top
is a half circle, because she needed that space for writing a description. For half of the right side she
put a border, but for the other half and the bottom she left out the border, because the bottom is
mainly people's feet, legs, and luggage, and the lower right is a woman with a visible full body. The
framing and panel shape has two meanings, first, the half circle on top can be viewed as a gateway
into Auschwitz, but also it is an allusion to a gravestone, because they would most likely die in

there is a black–hatted man walking away from the viewer and on the other side of the wall there are
mermaids. Both the man and the mermaids are miniscule due to the extended perspective of the
painting. The Village of The mermaids' is confusing for many reasons. It has no central subject and
uses size and perspective to minimize key figures and symbols that help the viewer form a holistic
conclusion about it's meaning. The Village of the Mermaids' is not unlike a hydra, for every question

viewer's discomfort with the unknown. The Village of the Mermaids' uses subtly unconventional

discombobulation, but Mueller's poetic analysis of the the painting fails to capture the full depth of

A painting is often our own depiction of what we see. To me, painting allows me to express my
beliefs and emotions, tell a story and challenge my society and myself. A world consisting of my
own ideas and thoughts. Throughout years of painting, I realized that their are specific techniques
for a successful artwork. The main Three I will be discussing are the Use of Space, Materials and
the function of the painting. In support of my argument I will be referring to two Artists I discovered
in my visit to the Tate Modern Museum. I will discuss Marlene Dumas, and compare a few of the
points to Wilhelm Sasnal's work, mentioning their own similar or different approaches to painting.
Marlene's work focuses around different aspects and is known to be proactive and controversial. Her
work focuses around Politics, sex, mental health, and death. One of her pieces titled "Stern"
represents a woman who is dead. We can notice the use of linear perspective and negative space.
The model is the common spot on the painting due to the size and the sharp edges whereas the
background is black, making the woman appear closer. The use of space is very important in this
piece creating a focal point, any objects in the background could cause a distraction. Illusion of form
is where the artist has specifically placed shadows on the features making them look realistic rather
than a 2D surface.

Format, Proportion and Scale: Death on the Pale White Horse, created in the year 1817 is painted
horizontally through the application of oil on canvas.The dimensions 176 inches x 301 inches. that
correspond to the scale of the figures within the painting come across disproportional and are

artwork made by Diego Velázquez in 1656 in the Cuarta del Principe in Almcázar in Madrid. It is
one of the most famous paintings in the Spanish history. Velazquez was trying to bring this painting
closer to Spanish History. The artwork is a painting of the infanata and her attendants. She has two
maids around her, and José Nieto in the doorway. Behind the infanata there is a canvas, on the
canvas is a picture of Mari Bárbola and Nicolasito Pertusato. The infanatas parents, Philip IV and
Mariana de Ulloa, reflections are in the mirror. The artist also includes himself in the painting,
painting a huge canvas. When Velázquez was painting the portrait, he was trying to paint like the
technique called Baroque. This technique is the style used to exaggerate motion in order to produce
drama and tension in paintings, sculptures, literature, dance and music. He was trying to make a
complex and credible composition that would convey a sense of life and reality. Velazquez limits
between reality and painting.. The composition combines unity and variety. This painting has a
specific location, and identified figures, and its a group portrait.
Pablo Picasso made many interpretations of this painting. He has made a series of 58 paintings. He
wasn't trying to create a copy or variation of Velazquez's work, but to create his own unique
painting. He made these paintings in memory of Jaume Sabartés. He wanted to show all the different
feelings and ideas inside her mind. He changed the face structure of the infanata because he was
trying to show the difficulty it was for her to balance her feelings, emotions, and ideas. The two
paintings by the two different artists are very similar to each other, just as they are different. One of
the main similarities are the princess, both of the paintings include the princess even though they
look very different. They both also show how the princess is focused on the light. In velazquez
painting she is looking at the light, while in Picasso's painting it shows the brighter colors to show

Adjustment Of An Reflective Self Portrait
The result of the expressive self portrait is based off a picture of myself taken outside. In a small
group, we were asked to take as many pictures as we needed to use for this assignment. The lighting
in the variety of pictures may differ depending on where and at what angle we are standing at, so
different pictures in various places were necessary. With these pictures, the best out of all when
changed into high contrast was the one used to paint. With the use of a program that helps with
photoshopping images, I changed my original picture into black and white, which I changed into
high contrast. Adjustments were essential as some features may be lost during this process. This
image was then used to emphasize specific areas of one's face or other parts of the body above the
shoulder to express a personality trait of an individual. In addition, this assignment is called
Expressive Self Portrait, where and how you emphasize a part of yourself as well as the use of
colour is very important. With this photoshopped picture, I used a projector to project the image on a
canvas of my choice and traced the contour of the subject matters within the picture. When the
tracing was done, I could start painting. The goal of this composition is to choose a single colour
scheme and with colours related to that scheme, we were to blend it using acrylic paint. As the

I think the artist is able to communicate the bad condition of the ship and its crew is in. The mood of
the work is scary and gloomy. The design and intensity of the waves, the changing weather, and the
ships in the ocean seem to make the scene come alive. It really conveys a since of naturalism in the

experience was David Ghirlandaio's Altarpiece showing the Virgin and Child, with Saints Apollonia

ones we have looked at in class. This piece was made specifically in the 1490's or the Early
Renaissance time period and directly came from Florence, Italy where it was commissioned by the
church as an altarpiece. Ghirlandaio specifically used tempera and gold on panel for this painting
which he made in his family enterprise. Overall, the painting is roughly five and a half feet in length
and height and is an excellent example of the type of works one would expect to see out of the Early

My lesson began as class usually does, with students completing the "Do Now" up on the board:
having notebooks and pencils ready, picking up the warm–up sheet from the back, and writing the
homework in their planner. Since there was no homework from the previous day, we were able to go
right into the warm–up. I walked around the classroom to make sure students had the warm–up and
were beginning to work. Students were unusually quiet, probably due to the camera and Keith's
presence, so I reminded them that they were allowed to discuss the warm–up. I stopped to help one
student get started finding the missing side lengths of two similar triangles and helped another
remember how to divide fractions for the last question. After the students had about 5 minutes to
