3. Introduction
The $100 million-worth contract for building the harbour, which was designed by Ibn Khaldun Al
Madaen, was won by Galfar few years ago.
The Ministry ofTransport and Communications is overseeing the implementation of the harbour.
The Khasab harbour project consisted of 1.5 km. of breakwaters, 500m quay walls, dredging of
350,000 cubic meters and reclamation of 750,000 cubic meters.
The Khasab Port is located in Oman's Musandam Governorate which borders Fujairah emirate. The
expansion is expected to cost 15.8 millionOmani riyals (Dh158 million).
4. PROJECT
The project will be implemented in two phases.
The first, costing over 13 million riyals, will develop marine activities, while the second, costing 2.8
million riyals, will develop basic infrastructure.
The marine activities comprise expansion of the breakwater to 575 metres, constructing a 445-
metre-long second breakwater, deepening of the commercial port dock to a depth of 10 metres, and
intake canal by 10.5 metres deep, deepening the fishing harbour by five metres, refilling part of the
port partially to 770,000 square metres, construction of a 300-metre commercial dock, and setting up
a commercial zone.
The basic infrastructure project comprises a 1,330 square metre building for departures, another 765
square metre building for the administration, Coast Guard, immigration and customs, four 1,000
square metre storages, in addition to car parking and internal roads.
5. PROJECT
The new harbour, which will be used as a commercial/tourist port with dedicated facilities for
fishermen, will not only create a new gateway for maritime trade, but also make it easy for holiday
seekers to reach the islands from the mainland.
The harbour facilities include terminal for medium-sized cargo ships and fast ferries, besides an area
for fishing vessels.
The plan is to make the island an attractive tourist destination by creating easy transport and other
infrastructure facilities.
There is also a direct link between the island and Hasik and Salalah.
Envisaged is a multipurpose facility with breakwaters, quay walls, wharves and floating pontoons
catering to a wide range of government, commercial, fishing and passenger craft.
P Mohamed Ali, MD of Galfar construction describes this project as one of the “MILESTONE” project
for both UAE and Galfar construction.
6. VIEWS & CONCLUSION
"The transport sector receives great attention from the government. Such continuous care is
reflected through expansion, development and construction of a number of ports," Al Nuaimi said.
Shaikh Juma Bin Hamdan Al Malek Al Shuhi, a State Council member from the area, hoped that the
expansion would provide job opportunities for youth in the region.
"This expansion of the port will also develop domestic trade, tourism and fishing sectors in the
region," he said.
The harbour facility, suitably equipped with mooring facilities for yachts and tourist craft, will boost
the island's tourism potential. The completion will help create jobs for local people in Al Hallaniyat.
The local people will benefit from the development of the whole area, especially with the inflow of
tourists.
P Mohamed Ali, discusses in depth about this milestone project in an interview on Infrastructure
development of UAE.
