Understanding the meaning of conflict is important when exploring the
relationship between conflict and negotiation. This assignment will
allow you to examine the causes and effects of a conflict.
Review the textbook definition of conflict and conduct independent
research using the University online library resources or the Internet to
find other definitions of conflict.
Consider an experience of a conflict situation from your personal or
work life. Use the following steps to analyze the conflict situation and
suggest an appropriate solution.
· Step 1: Provide your definition of conflict and describe the
meaning, nature and components of conflict
· Step 2: Define the problem and identify the conflict issues.
· Step 3: Determine your goal in resolving the conflict.
· Step 4: Analyze the problem and state the causes, symptoms,
effects, and obstacles that keep you from achieving your goal.
· Step 5: Generate two potential solutions and recommend ways to
attain the goal and resolve the conflict.
Write a 3-5 page essay in Microsoft Word format, citing at least 3
sources of information (one of which may be your text book). Apply
APA standards for writing style to your work.

listening and responding in negotiations and to identify ways to improve
listening and speaking in various negotiation situations.
Consider a situation you observed or participated in where a negotiation
occurred. This can be a situation at home as child negotiating a later bed
time or a situation at work such as a co-worker negotiating for additional
time off. An example of a negotiation is provided in the Webilography
and is entitled: Classic Sesame Street: Ernie and Bert Can’t
Communicate. Determine the kind of listening skills used in the
interaction of your chosen negotiation.
Prepare a 3-5 page paper which addresses the following:
Respond to the following:
· Describe the negotiation you observed or participated in.
· Explain and describe what parts of the interaction employed
effective listening and speaking in the negotiation.
· Explain and describe what parts of the interaction employed
ineffective listening and speaking in the negotiation.
· Suggest and explain at least two alternative strategies which could
have been used to improve communication within this negotiation.

type and how it can influence our ability to negotiate, communicate and
persuade others during a negotiation.
In this assignment, you will write a research paper (5-6 pages) which
will examine communication techniques, the use of power, and how the

Consider a scenario you have experienced or observed which involved a
negotiation, persuasive techniques and balance of power. This could be a

negotiation as the basis for this assignment.

1. Describe the scenario you are using as the basis for this
assignment. The scenario must include elements of negotiation,
persuasive techniques, and balance of power. If your selected scenario
does not contain certain elements, then use what you have learned from
your studies in this course, along with your research, to expand the
scenario to include these elements. Provide a rationale for your choices.

2. Describe what you believe to be the top three communication
issues presented in the scenario. Explain your choices.
3. Identify the sources of power used in the negotiation and explain
whether the sources of power were perceived or real. Use examples to

4. Describe the relative balance of powers between the parties in the

5. Assume you were the mediator in the chosen scenario and
recommend strategies which might reduce the conflict between the
parties.
6. List and describe the top 5 factors you believe should be

Effective leadership negotiation strategies are helpful in building a
sphere of influence, especially in times of emergency or a crisis. In this
assignment, you will analyze a case study video and perform a
situational analysis. The activity will allow you to assess the crisis
situation and examine factors that affect the final resolution of the
problem.
The purpose of this assignment is to develop your leadership and crisis
management skills by using a real-life case study example.
Case Study: On July 19, 1989, United Airways Flight 232 DC 10 was en
route from Denver to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, via Chicago. The
plane had to make an emergency crash landing in Sioux City, Iowa,
because of an engine failure that occurred 1 hour into the flight.
Approximately 296 passengers including business people, vacationers,
and children were on board.

Part 1: Personal Profile
The case study includes several characters such as the captain, the
copilot, a DC-10 flight training instructor, and a senior flight attendant
who play a crucial role in the final outcome of the crisis.

2. The copilot, Bill Records
3. DC-10 flight training instructor, Denny Fitch
4. Senior flight attendant, Jan Brown-Lohr
Select two of the characters involved in this case study and create a
personal profile of each including their title, work type, position in job,
education, training, and personality type. Include both of the personal
profiles as appendices in your research paper.
Use your assigned readings, information from the Argosy library, the
Internet and the case study video clip provided to develop a research
paper that answers the questions below in Part 2.
Part 2: Choose one of the two characters you profiled and answer these
questions in a 5-7 page research paper.
· Critically examine the role of the crew on board and explain
situations that needed more attention and that could have been addressed
within the given constraints.
· Describe at least three factors that affected the resolution of the
problem.
· What is the main goal of the character you are analyzing? Support
your response.
· How effective or ineffective was the individual in his/her attempt
to meet the goals? Why?
· What specific personal negotiation and leadership skills did he or
she demonstrate throughout the crisis?
· How well does the individual know himself or herself, and how
effectively or ineffectively did he or she adapt to the circumstances and
personalities involved on board Flight 232?
Complete a 5 to 7 page paper in Word format, citing sources of
information. Apply current APA standards for writing style to your
work. Make sure to include both of your personal profiles as appendices
in your paper
