The Royal Alcazar of Madrid was originally built in the 9th century by Muslims as a fortress. It later came under Christian rule and became the royal family's residence. Over centuries of rule by different dynasties, the Alcazar took on aspects of various architectural styles. It currently houses the king and queen's separate quarters, courtyards, gardens, and once included royal stables.
