Alfonso XI had two sons, Peter and Enrique, but Enrique killed Peter to become king and start the Trastamara dynasty in Castile. The dynasty included Juan I, who tried but failed to unite with Portugal, and his son Enrique III who conquered the Canary Islands. Later kings like Juan II and Enrique IV struggled with decreasing authority until Isabel I married Fernando I of Aragon, uniting the crowns of Castile and Aragon and ending the dynasty started by Enrique II.
