2. Metal:
Metallica: Fuel- this video is a very heavy metal song with many close-up shots. These
type of shots raise the level of intimacy between the artist and the audience, which links
to Andrew Goodwin’s theories of music video conventions. This video also shows the
narrative of a drag race giving both performance and narrative elements. This makes the
video have some meaning and therefore makes it more interesting to watch.
Furthermore it allows the use of very fast-paced editing as the theme of the narrative is
a drag race, which obviously requires speed. Not only does this reflect the speed of the
narrative, it also reflects the speed of the music, e.g.: through wheels screeching on the
road.
Dragonforce: Through The Fire and Flames- this video links with the convention of
voyeurism and the way the artist has a connection with the audience. This is done
through looking straight into the camera, at the audience. They also have a ‘guitar
battle’ between two guitarists, using a low angle shot. This makes them seem superior
and make them seem even greater than they are.
3. Rock:
Guns N’ Roses- Sweet Child O’ Mine: This performance style music video shows us the different
members of the band, what instruments they play and how they play it. The black and white editing
gives it an authentic rock look making it suit its genre more. There are lots of close-up shots
looking into the camera which gives us a personal attachment with the artist, drawing us into the
song and video more. Furthermore the editing has quite a slow speed during the verses and speeds
up in the choruses and guitar solos. This makes the video match the song, which again links with
Andrew Goodwin’s theory.
Nickelback- Rockstar: This narrative/performance style video tells the story of different people and
how anybody can be anything if they put their minds to it. This is through the use of many different
people lip syncing the song instead of the artist. This gives the video a more unique look which
overall makes it more interesting than other videos. Furthermore there is a strong use of voyeurism
as every character is looking straight into the camera, at the audience, making the audience feel
more involved. Finally the artist and record label have used normal people as the singers for the
video which again links to the aspirations of normal people and how they can be anything they
want to be, which motivates people to try and aspire to do more.
4. Indie:
George Ezra- Budapest: This performance style video has many small narratives of
different characters which have no relevance to the song itself. Because of this, it
makes it also an abstract video. This abstract theme is very common in indie music
videos which means they can be more inventive with their videos making them
more interesting to watch. There is also voyeurism seen within this video, which is
done by George Ezra himself looking straight into the camera.
Bastille- Pompeii: This narrative/abstract video is very similar to Budapest as the
video has no relevance to the actual words of the song. This again links with the
abstract theme of indie videos and again means the artist and record label can
explore different and unique videos to make themselves look more interesting.
Furthermore this also the personal connection through looking into the camera,
which is a very common trait of all music videos.
5. Pop:
Justin Bieber- Sorry: This performance style video is a full dance routine of a full
group of women. This makes the video seem more exciting and appeals to the
‘male gaze’ making what seems to be a ‘girly’ artist, suddenly appeal to men. This
widens his target audience for the video and overall more people listen to his
music. Also the fast paced editing of the music video matches the up-beat style of
the song and dancing which again makes the video look more thrilling and
exciting.
Shawn Mendes- Stitches: This narrative/performance style music video connotes
the hurt love has on people, which is why there is low-key lighting during the entire
video. Furthermore there is a wide use of voyeurism which gives a connection to
the audience which helps them relate to the meaning of the lyrics and visuals,
which link together perfectly.
6. Rap: Men:
Eminem- Rap God: This music video represents the criticism Eminem has received and
he mocks them and proves to them that he deserves his fame. He does this by rapping
faster than any other rap artist at the time and makes the beat sound much stronger
than other rap music. All of this represented in the music video through the sci-fi theme
and the increase in tension and enthusiasm of the video, up to the point where he raps
the fastest in the song. All of this not only makes the lyrics and visuals match, but also
allows him to talk to the viewers as he is proving them that he deserves his title of a
rapper, which also shows the convention of voyeurism. Finally the editing of the video
matches the music which again is another convention of Andrew Goodwin’s.
Kanye West- Stronger: This music video is also very sci-fi themed which follows the
general conventions for rap music. The sci-fi theme allows the video the keep up with
the fast-paced rapping which means the editing will also be fast paced which are all
conventions of music videos.
7. Rap: Women:
Nicki Minaj- Beez In The Trap: This music video is completely different to men’s videos
who rap. This video is a lot heavier than videos by Eminem or Kanye West, which shows
the diversity in genders and how maybe women are more dominant in the rap industry.
This video also complies to the ‘male gaze’ which shows all women’s bodies to be
skinny and ‘idealistic’ for heterosexual men. There is also as lot of voyeurism which
again amplifies the male gaze theory.
Iggy Azalea- Work: This video also shows the ‘male gaze’ to be superior in female rap
music videos but is again a lot heavier than male rap music videos. This again shows,
just like ‘Beez In The Trap’ shows women to dominate the rap industry. Finally the
editing matches the music which is a convention of music videos.
Overall, women’s rap music videos are a lot more sexual than men’s rap music videos
which shows how they follow the ‘male gaze’ for heterosexual men. However the music
itself is a lot heavier and the video amplifies this, which shows dominance and how they
are not restricted to how men want them to be.
