Competition in the Genre?
There are 7 long running soap operas Within
the UK, the likes of Emerdale, Hollyoaks and
Coronation Street which averages 800,000
views at a time during its screening. These
serve as the largest competition along side a
number of smaller soap operas. Being lots of
competition it is important to stand out,
otherwise people who enjoy soap operas will
just stick to their favorites as it takes a short
while to get into the routine of watching a
soap opera.
Target audience (Katz, Maslow, Hartley) –
• The target audience are common
everyday/working and lower class
people. The characters on the show are
supposed to relate to and act as a
medium for particular audience
members and how they suite their
demographics.
• The target audience is spread amongst
multiple ethnicities and other groups as
the average soap opera tackles multiple
serious subjects relating to ethnicity,
sexuality , class and status, etc.
Steve Neale – “Genre’s are instances of
repetition and difference” –
• Our product is similar to other soup
operas as it uses the same formula
including drama, shock, suspense and the
use of distinctive, impactful lines and
serious subject matter.
Channel (BBC Two) and Scheduling (8pm – Weekdays) –
It is important to be able to screen at this time because most workers will be home from work,
relaxing at home, and so have spare time to be able to watch Tv shows. Because of this we will be
screening at prime time for the stereotypical target audience, so then are likely to pull in more views.
BBC 2 is one of the most popular TV channels within the UK as is always one of the first on the
channel list. This is important because it the offers publicity to our soap opera being screened on a
widely known channel and so people will therefore be more enticed to watch it.
