2. Philippians 2:5-11 Have this mind in you, which was
also in Christ Jesus: (6) who, existing in the form of
God, counted not the being on an equality with God
a thing to be grasped, (7) but emptied himself, taking
the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of
men; (8) and being found in fashion as a man, he
humbled himself, becoming obedient even unto
death, yea, the death of the cross. (9) Wherefore
also God highly exalted him, and gave unto him the
name which is above every name; (10) that in the
name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in
heaven and things on earth and things under the
earth, (11) and that every tongue should confess that
Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
3. INTRODUCTION
A. In Philippians 2:5-11 we see the true
character of the Son of God.
B. Jesus was with God in heaven from the
beginning.
C. He came to earth to live as a man.
D. Notice some things he was made or became.
4. HE WAS MADE A LITTLE LOWER THAN
THE ANGELS
A. Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was
made a little lower than the angels, for the
suffering of death crowned with glory and
honor, that He, by the grace of God, might
taste death for everyone.
B. Philippians 2:5-6 Let this mind be in you
which was also in Christ Jesus, (6) who,
being in the form of God, did not consider it
robbery to be equal with God,
5. HE WAS MADE OF WOMAN
A. Galatians 4:4-5 But when the fulness of the
time was come, God sent forth his Son,
made of a woman, made under the law, (5)
To redeem them that were under the law,
that we might receive the adoption of sons.
B. Isa 7:14 — Therefore the Lord himself shall
give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall
conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his
name Immanuel.
6. HE WAS MADE FLESH
A. John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh,
and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his
glory, the glory as of the only begotten of
the Father,) full of grace and truth.
B. Hebrews 2:14-18 Inasmuch then as the
children have partaken of flesh and blood,
He Himself likewise shared in the same, that
through death He might destroy him who
had the power of death, that is, the devil,
7. HE WAS MADE LIKE HIS BRETHREN
A. Hebrews 2:14-18 Inasmuch then as the children have
partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in
the same, that through death He might destroy him who
had the power of death, that is, the devil, (15) and
release those who through fear of death were all their
lifetime subject to bondage. (16) For indeed He does not
give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of
Abraham. (17) Therefore, in all things He had to be made
like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful
High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make
propitiation for the sins of the people. (18) For in that He
Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid
those who are tempted.
B. Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who
cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all
points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
8. HE WAS MADE OF NO REPUTATION
A. Philippians 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you which was
also in Christ Jesus, (6) who, being in the form of
God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with
God, (7) but made Himself of no reputation, taking
the form of a bondservant, and coming in the
likeness of men. (8) And being found in appearance
as a man, He humbled Himself and became
obedient to the point of death, even the death of
the cross.
B. Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come
to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a
ransom for many.”
9. HE WAS MADE UNDER THE LAW
A. Galatians 4:4-5 But when the fulness of the
time was come, God sent forth his Son,
made of a woman, made under the law, (5)
To redeem them that were under the law,
that we might receive the adoption of sons.
B. Mt 5:17 — Think not that I am come to
destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not
come to destroy, but to fulfil.
10. HE WAS MADE A CURSE
A. Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the
curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is
written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
B. Romans 9:1-4 (1) I tell the truth in Christ, I am not
lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the
Holy Spirit, (2) that I have great sorrow and
continual grief in my heart. (3) For I could wish that
I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren,
my countrymen according to the flesh, (4) who are
Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory,
the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of
God, and the promises;
11. HE WAS MADE SIN
A. 2 Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew
no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the
righteousness of God in Him.
B. Romans 8:3-4 For what the law could not do in
that it was weak through the flesh, God did by
sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful
flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in
the flesh, (4) that the righteous requirement of
the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk
according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
12. HE WAS MADE PERFECT THROUGH SUFFERING
A. Hebrews 2:10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all
things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons
to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect
through sufferings.
B. 1 Peter 2:20-21 For what credit is it if, when you are
beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when
you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is
commendable before God. (21) For to this you were
called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an
example, that you should follow His steps:
C. 1 Peter 4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the
flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he
who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
13. HE WAS MADE ALIVE
A. 1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just
for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to
death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
B. Romans 1:3-4 concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who
was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, (4) and
declared to be the Son of God with power according to the
Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.
C. Romans 8:9-11 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit,
if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone
does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. (10) And if
Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the
Spirit is life because of righteousness. (11) But if the Spirit of
Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who
raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal
bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
14. HE WAS MADE LORD AND CHRIST
A. Acts 2:36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel
know assuredly that God has made this Jesus,
whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
B. Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God also has highly
exalted Him and given Him the name which is
above every name, (10) that at the name of
Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven,
and of those on earth, and of those under the
earth, (11) and that every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the
Father.
15. WHAT ABOUT YOU?
A. Jesus was made all of these things for us.
B. Everything Jesus did was for us.
C. What are you willing to do for him?
D. 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 For the love of Christ
compels us, because we judge thus: that if One
died for all, then all died; (15) and He died for
all, that those who live should live no longer for
themselves, but for Him who died for them and
rose again.
