This document provides information for students enrolled in ENG 000: Writing Center at WCC. It explains that students in certain writing courses have a required Writing Center component consisting of assignments that count as 25% of the final grade. Students must complete an orientation, buy a workbook, and submit assignments by deadlines. Writing Center staff are available to help students with assignments and provide feedback to help them improve their writing.

ENG 000 WELCOME GUIDE
1. For WCC Students Enrolled in ENG 000: Writing Center
A special welcome to you! You’re our biggest customers! Because you’re enrolled in one of the
following writing courses—ENG 050, ENG 051, ENG 090, ENG 091, ENG 100, or ENG 111—you
have a required Writing Center (ENG 000) component that will consist of a series of writing as-
signments that will count as 25% of your final grade in your writing course. More details below.
Getting Started in ENG 000: Writing Center
1. Come to the Writing Center during the first week of the semester for orientation.
2. Listen to the orientation presentation and read this guide.
3. Complete the orientation assignment and have it checked by a Writing Center staff member.
4. Buy the Writing Center workbook for your writing course: ENG 050, ENG 051, ENG 090,
ENG 091, ENG 100, or ENG 111.These workbooks are available at the WCC Bookstore on
the first floor of the Student Center building.
5. Note your Writing Center assignment deadlines, which are printed on pp. 2-3 of this guide.
Things We’d Like You to Know about ENG 000: Writing Center
1. You’re welcome in the Writing Center anytime we’re open.
2. You may complete your Writing Center assignments at home or in the Writing Center.
3. You must have your Writing Center assignments checked by us on or before the deadline
dates. You can work ahead as fast as you want; some students complete all of their assign-
ments by midterm.
4. We recommend that, instead of making a special trip to campus just for Writing Cen-
ter, you come to get your assignments checked on a day when you’re already on
campus for class—as long as you meet or beat your deadline dates.
5. Laptops: We strongly prefer hard copies of your writing. It’s difficult for us to help you if your
writing is on your laptop. If this is the case, the best we can do is offer you suggestions on a
sheet of paper. We cannot type on your laptop for you or tell you what to type on your lap-
top.
6. We cannot accept late Writing Center assignments. If you have a late assignment, talk with
your writing course instructor.
7. Beware of bringing in an assignment less than a half hour before closing time. We cannot
guarantee that we’ll be able to check it.
8. Your Writing Center assignments are graded Pass/Fail and count as 25% of your final grade
in your writing course. Your instructor receives frequent updates on your progress.
9. Some Writing Center assignments must be typed. You may use the computer lab in LA 354
if a class is not in session there.
10. If there is a line, you’re limited to 15 minutes with a Writing Center staff member who is
helping you.
11. We at the Writing Center are committed to providing friendly, compassionate, and knowl-
edgeable support that will help you become a better writer.
How to Pass Assignments in ENG 000: Writing Center
1. Be aware of the assignment deadlines.
2. Follow the directions in your Writing Center workbook and write the best you can.
3. Fill out the cover sheets for assignments legibly and accurately: your name, your instructor’s
name, your writing course section number, and the date.
4. Make sure you have completed all of the items on the assignment checklist.
5. When you come to have an assignment checked, bring your Writing Center workbook.
6. When you pass an assignment, we tear the completed cover sheet out of your Writing Cen-
ter workbook and file it. We also sign your checklist sheet, which you keep.
7. If you don’t pass an assignment, don’t worry. We’ll tell you what to fix and how you might
want to fix it. Remember, though: your revised work must still be checked on or before the
deadline date.
8. Ask questions. Talk with the Writing Center staff member who’s checking your work. We
want you to succeed.
