Celebrate Excellence - WW-P Schools
1. Celebrate Excellence – WW-P Schools
Everyresidentof WestWindsorandPlainsboroshouldbe proudof the accomplishmentsand
recognitionof ourschools. NewJerseyMonthly Magazine justreleasedtheirmostcurrentNew Jersey
highschool rankings: WW-PHighSchool Northis #2 and WW-PHigh School South is#9. Both of our
highschoolsinthe Top 10 is reasonto cheer!
A secondpiece of greatnewscomesfromNiche.com, anorganizationbasedinPittsburghthat
doesrankinginmanycategories, includingschool districts. Theyhave rankedthe WW-P Regional
School District# 3 in the State of NewJersey,and#33 in the UnitedStates.Thisinformationverifiesthat
our schoolsare groundedina strong curriculum, deliveredbya highlyprofessionalstaff, supportedby
professionaldevelopmentthatiscurrentinthe use of bestpracticesof researchbasedinstruction.
Overthe past year, information aboutourschool district hasappearedinprintthat istotally
incorrect. I have decidedtobe a candidate forthe school board fromWestWindsorbecause Iam
committedtoa strengthenedandexpandedcommunicationsprocessbetweenthe schoolsand
community.Everycitizenhasthe righttoask questions. Ourschool systemhasthe obligationtoprovide
appropriate answers. However,we all mustdemandthatthe informationishonest, accurate and
factually verifiable.Justbecauseyouhearsomething,orsee itinprint,doesnotmake it true!
A recentletterinthe WW-PNews regardinghonorsclassesinourhighschools hasmuch
incorrectinformation. Itstatedthatthere are no standardsforadmissionintohonorsclasses,andasa
result,80% of ninthgrade studentsare in language artshonors classes. Asthe formerchairpersonof
the CurriculumCommittee,Iworkedwiththe othermembersof the Boardof Educationto move away
fromthe teacherrecommendation processthatresultedinmore than1200 parental override requests
annually. We createdaprocessbaseduponcourse eligibilitystandardsthatallowedeveryone toknow
exactlywhatwasrequiredtoenterupperlevel courses,honorsandadvancedplacement.Asaresult,
40% of our freshmenare inhonorslanguage artsclasses, andthe grade distributionissimilartobefore.
The data in otherdepartmentsisthe same.Inaddition, more studentsare eligibleandtakingAP
courses,with93% of those studentsscoring3,4 or5, on the APexams,consistentwithourpriordata.
Overthe previousnine yearsthatIservedonthe board,we made careful decisionstoexpand
appropriate accessto programsto as manystudentsas possible. Ourschoolsmustbe inclusive, not
exclusive. The datashowsthatthese decisionswerecorrect!Currently,we have more studentsenrolled
and succeedinginhonors andadvancedplacementclasses, andthe overall standingof the school
systemremainsamongthe bestinthe state and the nation.
I am proudto have beenpart of what wasaccomplishedinthe pastand will worktoward
“expandingthe excellence of the WW-Pschools”when elected.
