2. Mean, Median, Mode and Range are all used to summarise a group of data. They tell us about the data without the details!
3. Mean Mean = total of the numbers divided by how many numbers. Number of pets: 3, 5, 3, 6, 4, 1, 5, 6, 5, 2 Add up the numbers: 3 + 5 + 3 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 5 + 6 + 5 +2 = 40 Divide by how many numbers: 40 ÷ 10 = 4 The mean number of pets in our class is 4
4. Median Median is the middle value Put the numbers in order Choose the number in the middle of the list. If there are 2 numbers in the middle then it is halfway between them. Number of pets: 3, 5, 3, 6, 4, 1, 5, 6, 5, 2 Put the numbers in order: 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, Median number of pets is between 4 and 5 and so = 4.5
5. Mode Mode is the most common number Put the numbers in order Choose the number that appears the most frequently. Sometimes there may be more than one mode. Number of pets: 3, 5, 3, 6, 4, 1, 5, 6, 5, 2 Put the numbers in order: 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, Modal number is the most common = 5
6. Range Range is how far from biggest to smallest. Put the numbers in order Take the smallest number from the largest. Number of pets: 3, 5, 3, 6, 4, 1, 5, 6, 5, 2 Put the numbers in order: 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, Take the smallest number (1) away from the largest number (6): 6 – 1 = 5, so the range is 5.
