3. • The United Nations Industrial Development Organization
(UNIDO), is a specialized agency in the United Nations system,
headquartered in Vienna, Austria.
• The Organization's primary main concern is the promotion and
acceleration of industrial development in developing countries
and countries with economies in transition and the promotion
of international industrial cooperation.

4. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
• The Organization works towards improving the quality of life of the
world's poor by drawing on its combined global resources and
expertise in the following three interrelated thematic areas:
– Poverty reduction through productive activities;
– Trade capacity-building
– Energy and environment.

5. POVERTY REDUCTION THROUGH
PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITIES
• As a primary driver of economic growth and employment creation, the
private sector has a central role in poverty reduction and the
achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
• Private sector-led industrial development makes a significant
contribution to bringing about the much needed structural changes that
can set the economies of poor countries on a path of sustained
economic growth.
• UNIDO's services therefore focus on encouraging the creation of decent
employment and income to overcome poverty.

6. TRADE CAPACITY-BUILDING
• UNIDO is one of the largest providers of trade-related
development services, offering focused and neutral advice
and technical cooperation in the areas of competitiveness,
industrial modernization and upgrading, compliance with
international trade standards, testing methods and metrology.

7. ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT
• UNIDO promotes sustainable patterns of industrial
consumption and production to de-link the processes of
economic growth and environmental degradation.
• UNIDO is a leading provider of services for improved
industrial energy efficiency and the promotion of renewable
sources of energy.

9. OPERATIONAL ACTIVITIES
• These include direct technical assistance to industries and in-
plant training programmes whereby groups of technicians
and engineers from developing countries facing a common
industrial problem are brought together to consider, how
industry in the more advanced countries avoids or solves
similar problems

10. RESEARCH
• UNIDO conducts feasibility studies on the requirements and
potential industry in developing countries.
• Export-oriented industries are given special attention

• The coordinating activities of UNIDO include mostly the
organisation and sponsoring of inter-regional and
international meetings, seminars and symposia
