4. THE WORLD BANK IS DIFFERENT FROM THE WORLD
BANK GROUP, AN EXTENDED FAMILY OF FIVE
INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS :
International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD):- lends to
countries with good credit, funding itself by raising cash in credit markets.
International Development Association (IDA):- lends $6 billion or more a year
to poorest countries , half in Africa, in interest – free loan with repayment period of up to
40 years.
5. INTERNATIONAL FINANCE CORPORATION (IFC):- A PRIVATE SECTOR ARM
OWNED BY THE BANK’S 179 MEMBER COUNTRIES, MAKES MARKET – RATE LOANS
AND EQUITY INVESTMENT IN DEVELOPING LANDS.
MULTILATERAL INVESTMENT GUARANTEE AGENCY (MIGA):- WORKS WITH
OTHER BANK UNITS TO DEVELOP FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT IN HIGH – RISK
COUNTRIES.
INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR SETTLEMENT OF INVESTMENT DISPUTES
(ICSID):- IS AN AUTONOMOUS UNIT TO SETTLE DISPUTES BETWEEN
GOVERNMENTS, PRIVATE INVESTORS.
6. HISTORY
The World Bank was created at the 1944 Bretton Woods
Conference along with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The intention behind the founding of the World Bank was to
provide temporary loans to low-income countries which were
unable to obtain loans commercially.
The first country to receive a World Bank loan was France.
7. VOTING POWERS OF COUNTRIES
The countries with most voting power are now the United States (15.85%),
Japan (6.84%), China (4.42%), Germany (4.00%),
the United Kingdom (3.75%), France(3.75%), India (2.91%),
Russia (2.77%), Saudi Arabia (2.77%) and Italy (2.64%).
INDIA holds 7th position in number of votes in IBRD
67690 votes, 6th in IFC with 107747, 7th in IDA with
and 9th in MIGA with 5597 votes.
8. It was started to reduce poverty but it support UNITED STATES business interest.
It is deeply implicated in contemporary modes of donor and NGO driven
imperialism.
The president of the bank is always a citizen of united states.
Lack transparency to external publics.
It is an instrument for the promotion of U.S. or Western interests.
The decision - making structure is undemocratic.
It has consistently pushed a “Neo Liberal” agenda.

11. Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI):- protect public health world wide
through the widespread use of vaccines.
The Carbon Fund:- work to develop viable, flexible market mechanisms to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol.
Roll Back Malaria:- coordinates the International fight against malaria, which kills more than
1 million people a year most of them children in Africa.
Global Environment Facility:- provides grant to developing counties to fund projects that
benefit the global environment and promote sustainable livelihoods in local communities.
12. Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research(CGIAR):- created and
improvement in developing countries over the last 30 years.
Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS :- advocates for global action on HIV/AIDS
epidemic and work with society, the business community and the private sector.
Global Water Partnership(GWP):- supports countries in the sustainable management of
their water resources.
Info Dev:- works a the intersection of innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship to
create opportunities for inclusive growth, job creation and poverty reduction.
13. INDIA AND WORLD BANK
India is the largest recipient of loans from the World Bank, amounting to $102.1 billion,
between 1945 and 2015 .
The World Bank has been lending funds to India for rural and urban
development projects related to transport, water and irrigation, health, power and
agriculture.
Water, sanitation and flood projects in India received the most World Bank funding
(27%), followed by finance (19%), transportation (18%), education (11%), public
administration and law (10%), agriculture (8%), health and social service (4%),
information and communication (2%), and energy and mining (1%).
India is home to over one – quarter of the world’s poor, and the World Bank Group is
focused on sharing best practices as well as financing for development as part of its
mission to reduce global poverty.
