Before and After, 1961, by Andy Warhol. The foremost reason for choosing this piece is I just saw it and my reaction is so fresh! Reading aboutAndy
Warhol and his early stages as an iconic pop artist, Before and After attracts my attention, a black and white big size piece which shows a profile of
a woman before and after a nose plastic surgery. Arthur C. Danto believes Andy Warhol is a person who can make an art piece out of nothing.
"Before Warhol, Before and After would have been a piece of boilerplate commercial art, whose maker would be long forgotten." (Dante, 2) I agree

Pop–Art rose from the desire of artists to create art that broke from the standard ideas of what art is and what art can be during the mid 1950s–1960s.
However, they clung to images that were common to the mass public in order to ensure audiences could relate to works and also find a sense of
familiarity with them. Subject matter such as celebrities, advertisements, comic books, e.t.c. was most often found in the movement. Andy Warhol was a
key innovator and leader in the Pop Art movement and has since then become an easily recognizable icon of this time. He arguably helped pioneer
many of the ideas and themes of Pop Art. In doing so, there was a major shift in subject matter from his early work to his most famous pieces. In the
beginning, Warhol's work was personal and intimate. Over time, his popular pieces became less narrative and began focusing more on what was
popular, such as his celebrity screen prints which eventually brought him notoriety. Warhol faced much discrimination in the early years of his work
regarding the obviously homoerotic subject matter of his pieces. He detached the artist from the artwork over time because he recognized that his more
blatantly homosexual–themed works would never gain traction or earn him respect in the art world. Though they are rarely discussed, Warhol's
early work greatly impacted the themes he tackled in his later years. The censoring of his works such as "Boys Kissing Boys," "13 Most Wanted
Men," and "Lonesome Cowboys" deterred Warhol from continuing his interest in homosexual subjects in his public works because of the backlash he
received from their exhibition and as a result encouraged him to move towards more widely accepted and identifiable subjects such as celebrities and
logos. Warhol's earlier works are often overlooked or go completely unmentioned in regards to his development as an artist, but their neglect only makes
them that much more important. Long before he gained an interest in popular culture, Warhol created a series of intimate continuous line drawings
titled "Boys Kissing Boys." Andy submitted them for review at the Tanager Gallery, and both times they were promptly rejected. In fact, they were the
first works that Warhol ever submitted to a

He made it bigger, brighter, and more relatable. Because of this, he was declared one of the most influential artists in America. Born Andrew
Warhola on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was stricken with many illnesses throughout his life. At the age of eight, Warhol was
diagnosed with a disease known as St. Vitus Dance, a neurological disorder that causes involuntary movements throughout the body. It left him
bedridden for almost a year. It was during this time that his mother gave him his first art lesson, hoping to keep his spirits up. He immediately fell in
love with the subject. Along with the illness, Warhol had a pigment disorder that caused a discoloration in his skin. Despite the illnesses of his
childhood, it was a chronic gallbladder issue that killed him. He had his gallbladder removed on February 20, 1987. There was a complication,

Andy Warhol is known as one of the biggest pop art icons as well as one of the most inspiring and influential artists who changed the way art was
produced by the next generation. Warhol was not only the most well known Pop artist but was also somewhat of a catalyst of the movement. Warhol
started his career working as a commercial illustrator in New York before he began to make art that would be shown in galleries. Warhol established
his reputation as a Pop artist in the early 1960's. His Marilyn Diptych may have helped establish this title. 1962 was the year Andy Warhol first began to
use the technique of screenprinting photographic images directly onto the canvas. These images were usually done in multiples like his Marilyn

The piece was created as a tribute to the Hollywood actress in 1962 just weeks after her death. The diptych consists of fifty images of Marilyn
Monroe, half are in color while the other half are in black and white. In order to create this image Warhol used a silkscreen printing process, which
he was well known for. This process allowed him to create uniformity in the color of Marilyn's face, lips and hair. He also used oil and acrylic in
this image. Warhol uses an orange for the background and a bright golden yellow for her hair. The red in her lips varies from one picture to the
next, some are bright ruby red while others are a dark crimson. A light lavender purple is used for her face that fades to a lighter hue as the faces
continue down the page. Blue is used for Marilyn's eyeshadow as well as the collar of her shirt, and black is used to define her facial features as
well as shadows. The black and white side Monroe's image is unevenly printed. The first column is filled with sharp images, the second column is a
little muddied or smeared with black ink and in the next three columns the image begins to fade until the last column is all but a ghost of

The attitude of Warhol only confused society more. Instead of hiding his association with commercial art as other artists did, drawing and dividing
the line between it and real art, he erased the line. "The Pop artists did images that anybody walking down Broadway could recognize in a split
second."(Warhol) Pop artist figures competed in that art market where images and auras, no just objects, are offered for consumption. Warhol has
never objected to this state of affairs, which he did so much to reveal – and indeed, to push to new extremes of sophistication. Warhol introduced
society to a new kind of art that is now being recognized as real art, he pushed to boundaries and so called standards to the traditional ways.

To expand Andy's finances, Fred Hughes encouraged him to concentrate on his paintings. Andy's Swiss dealer, Bruno Bischofberger, thought Andy
should paint a series on a world leader for an exhibit at his gallery. He suggested Albert Einstein. Andy thought that Chairman Mao, the dictator of
China, would be a better choice. "I've been reading so much about China...the only picture they ever have is of Mao Zedong. It's great. It looks like
a silkscreen."(Warhol, p.117 price of pop) Bruno insisted that on one, especially Americans, would but them, since Mao was a widely hated
communist. As usual Andy stuck to his instincts and set out to silkscreen a set of prints, line drawings, and paintings of the Chinese leader. Mao
symbolized power over the lives of billions of people. Although, if Andy had lived in communist China during the Cultural Revelation, he most likely
would have been imprisoned. Mao suppressed creativity, especially in the arts. But Andy felt sure that capitalist American collectors would find the
images of Chairman Mao, both alien and familiar at the same time, irresistible. Based on the official photograph of Mao, the portraits were done in a
freer brushstroke than previous paintings, with a looser background of color over which the image was printed. By adding lines around the face for
emphasis, Warhol tried to make Mao as

Andy Warhol Pop Art
Pop art is a 20th century art movement. Pop Art got its name because of its deiversary imagery taken from popular culture. It first started to move
away from Abstract Expressionism, which was a really popular style in the 50's because of its color, shape, forms, emotion, ideas etc. But many young
artists of that generation didn't like abstract expressionism. So It first began in the 1950's in Europe when the European avant garde started getting to
approach diverse art after the world War II. According to Metropolitan Museum "The termPop Art was first used around 1954 to describe a group of
British artists". Later pop art was embraced by Americans. In 1960 first exhibition was shown in New York galleries called Pop Art.

Andy Warhol is considered to be one of the most impactful artists to work in the later
half of the 20th century. His work challenged the institution of art in so many ways, from the
integration of popular culture iconography to his method of production in his "Factory"; Warhol
confronted what made art "art", and redefined it throughout the span of his career. Personally,
Warhol was obsessed with celebrity and mass reproduction of commodities of any kind. This
infatuation greatly influenced the way he worked, by using screen–print, and appropriating
images from pop–culture of the 60's, he was able to gain the infamy he so adored. The infamous

notion that his work was obvious and lacked substance. Unlike Warhol, Marcel Duchamp, who
influenced movements like Dada, Pop, and Conceptualism poked fun and questioned the
institution by challenging them with thought provoking works like "Fountain" (1917) and Etant
donnes (1946–66). These works, unlike Warhol's, had meaning and confronted topics like
voyeurism, irony, humor, and capitalism (The Art Story). Warhol may be compared to Duchamp,
however, their efforts seem very different, even at face value. The work that took place at the
factory was experimental in nature, but included a slew of studio assistants that aided Warhol in
the process of removing the artist from the art and questioned the value of the "artist's hand"
within the work (Guggenheim Museum). This concept brought critics and fans alike, but either
way, Warhol was still talked about, obsessed over, and scrutinized. All things the modern

In his early years, he created simple sketch illustrations for magazines and the artist's books that he was able to get published. One of Warhol's
early pieces, "Happy's Luggage" which appeared in "The Autobiography of a Snake Called Noa the Boa" is a sketch of various pieces of luggage. This
is very similar to the pencil sketches that we created in our images during Week One. Another piece that was done by Warhol in his later years was a
self–portrait that he created in 1986. This piece, which was done in graphite, resembles the pieces that we created in Week Two. The details that are
incorporated in both our pieces and the piece by Warhol are very similar as well. Another piece that I feel related back to our class very strongly was a
self–portrait that Warhol painted in 1978. In this portrait, formed by acrylic and silkscreen ink on linen, Warhol portrays himself displaying a
variety of emotions all in the same painting. I really felt as though this related back to the projects that we worked on during Week Three, primarily
because during that week we focused on expression of a variety of emotions. Furthermore, I feel as though his use of a variety of emotions is much
more complex than the single emotion that we were required to incorporate in our pieces. Regardless of this, I feel as though he is able to express a

However, even though they are all extremely renowned, Andy Warhol is right up in that list of top guns. His style of art was a major influence on art

Various famous people come from a modest life and Andy Warhol is one of them. He was born to Slovakian immigrants as Andrew Warhola in

Hailed as the founding father of the Pop Art movement in the late 1950's and early 1960's, Andy Warhol, through his endeavors, brought forward
society's obsession with mass culture and allowed it to become the subject of his art. He produced works that defied and challenged the popular notion
of what art should be by disputing the "traditional conventions pertaining to the uniqueness, authenticity, and authorship" of art (Faerna 28). However,
it is an injustice to say that Warhol's goals primarily included the desire to create such a ground–breaking and salient style of American art or to
entertain the public by making his own artistic contributions. Rather, Andy Warhol's interests were more entwined in his own self–interest and greed. ...

Ultimately, these early "rituals" were precursors to the prolific and materialistic lifestyle Warhol would later choose to live. Later on in Andy Warhol's
artistic career, his actions and vocalizations would further verify his enthusiasm towards securing unfathomable amounts of materialistic possessions
and popularity. In one of his philosophy books entitled: The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, he informed his readers that "buying is much more American
than thinking and [that he was] as American as they come" (Bourdon 352). This attitude contributed to the large sums of money that went into securing
the priceless decoration pieces that he used to outfit "The Factory," his multi–floored studio. The Factory was bejeweled with a variety of ornate and
precious items such as "nineteenth–century European bronze figures, dated English and American paintings, mahogany, rosewood, and bird's eye
maple furniture, and replicas of Egyptian artifacts" (Artelino.com). Regardless, no matter how much revenue Warhol earned, his childhood years
had left him with a fear of being poor and thus he always chose to walk around with several hundred bills to remind himself of his own wealth. He
even went so far as to sleep on a straw mattress cushioned by wads of bills; his logic being: "you only feel as rich as the money you have in your

Much of his future material can be placed in the category of such common, everyday objects, that were focused on in these early times. Nearly all of
Warhol's works relate in one way or another to the commercially mass–produced machine product.
Although Warhol did receive recognition for much of his commercial illustrations during those times, he was constantly pursuing another career, as a
serious artist. Unfortunately, Warhol was not so successful at first in obtaining this goal. His delicate ink drawings of shoes and cupids, among
various others, had no place in a decade dominated by such heroic artists as William de Kooning and Jackson Pollock.
But then he began working on a process called silk–screening. A large photographic image is transferred to a silk screen, placed on a canvas and
inked from the back.
It was this technique that enabled him to produce a series of mass media images beginning in 1962. This series is generally regarded as a comment on
the banality and harshness of American culture while celebrating its most recognisable icons.

A Brief Look at Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was, and continues to be one of the most popular artists of all time. The reason he was one of the most world–renowned artists was his
"pop art" images, his Campbell's Soup Can being one of his most remembered pieces. (Rosenberg, n.d) Andy was intrigued by the sudden rise in
consumer culture and mass production, which led to consumerism in America being the centre focus of his art. (Tate Org, n.d) In this essay I will be
discussing Andy's journey to success, and how Warhol's art represents consumerism in America.
Andy Warhol (1928–1987), was born Andrew Warhola to Slovak immigrants. He was an artist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who later in life, went
on to move to New York city to pursue his career. (video reference) Some of Warhol's' earlypop art images included the 210 Coke Bottles, 200 One
Dollar Bills, Campbell's Soup Cans, and Marilyn Monroe prints that were produced onto a large canvas using the repetitive technique of print making.
This particular type of work that Warhol produced is something that had contributed to America's sudden infatuation with consumerism. (Tate Org, n.d)
The pop art movement was effective because people who lived everyday lives were able to relate to Andy's artwork, as well as formulate their own
opinions to what they think the ideas and reasoning behind Warhol's artwork were (Kearney, 2012) What influenced Andy to create artwork that

might be ordinary and simple, I think Warhol's reason for creating this art, along with most of his other art, is what made Warhol's art so famous and
popular. As Warhol stated himself, "I just paint things I always thought were beautiful, things you use every day and never think about" ("
Andy Warhol
"). Warhol turned normal, everyday objects like a Coca–Cola bottle into a work of art because he was grateful for the simple things in life due to the ...

Warhol did not have the easiest time growing up, yet he was still able to create a successful and memorable life for himself. I think that Warhol and I
have a similar outlook on life. I hope that no matter where my life takes me that I can continue to make the most of the littlest things just like Warhol
did. If I were an artist like Warhol, my art would be centered around my life and simple objects. Art should be expressive, and what better way to
express oneself than to show their life struggles through art. I would also create art that enhances simply, everyday objects. Sometimes the things we
tend to overlook are the things that have the most beauty. Not everyone finds beauty in ordinary objects, but that is something that Warhol and I have

Analysis Of Marilyn Diptych By Andy Warhol
Introduction
The following essay will be analysing the artwork Marilyn Diptych by Andy Warhol which is an acrylic on canvas, silkscreen print. The artwork
measures 2054 x 1448 x 20mm and the artwork was painted in the year 1962. The analysis will be done by discussing the following in detail: the
formal elements, the size, materials and techniques used, line, shape/form, colour, tone as well as the function and meaning of the piece. The analysis
will also cover the historical significance of the piece with the connotative meaning but mainly focussing on the denotative meaning of Marilyn Diptych
by Andy Warhol.
Historical background
Andy Warhol's Marilyn Diptych is made of two silver canvases on which Warhol silkscreened a famous photograph ofMarilyn Monroe fifty times, as
seen in figure 1. In an analytical article on Andy Warhol's Marilyn Diptych, Tina Rivers Ryan (smart history 2015:02) said "at first glance,... Show

The work is a publicity still of Marilyn Monroe for the film Niagra that Warhol cropped and blew up. The image was then transferred to the mesh of a
silk screen, he then passed an ink–laden squeegee over the mesh as the silkscreen was on the canvas. The ink would pass through and press the print
of the image onto the canvas. The areas of the mesh where glue was applied prevented the paint from passing through the canvas. In an interview
Warhol said, "In August 62 I started doing silkscreens. I wanted something stronger that gave more of an assembly line effect. With silk
–screening you
pick a photograph, blow it up, transfer it in glue onto silk, and then roll ink across it so the ink goes through the silk but not through the glue"
(MOOC peer assessment 2014:06). The edges of the still were cropped out to emphasise her face, this made Monroe's face constantly in your face

One of his jobs was to design the weather map for NBC's morning news. In 1952 Warhol held his first exhibit, it was not a financial success, but it
enhanced Warhol's reputation as a commercial artist. But his spare time was now taken up with pop art, inspired byJasper Johns and Robert
Rauschenberg, two young pop artist, Warhol had come across in 1958. He began to paint, draw and print everyday objects such as, dollar bills, soup
cans, postage stamps, comic strips, and soda bottles. According to Warhol, these were some of the consumer products "on which America is built."
When Warhol showed his work to New York art dealers, they said it was too similar to the work of other artists. Then in 1962, Warhol was still
searching for a style that would be his and his alone, when his assistant Nathan Gluck, suggested that Warhol try silk screen–printing. This process
allowed Warhol to choose an image, reproduce it mechanically, and repeat it as many times as he wanted. It was the breakthrough Warhol had been
waiting for, at last he had found his own unique artistic style.
Marilyn Monroe's death (August 4, 1962) inspired Warhol to create a series of paintings and he also produced similar pictures of other famous people
such as, Elvis Presley, Mick Jagger, Warren Beatty, Elizabeth Taylor, and himself.

Andy Warhol Pop Artists
During the mid 1950's, an art movement called Pop art began in Britain and then spread to the United States by the late 1950's. Pop art is created to
display emotions instead of to show the actual piece of art. This mass cultural art movement emerged in Britain, the United States, Spain, Japan, Italy,
Belgium, Netherlands, and Russia. This movement allowed artists to break the old traditions of abstract expressionism and create new and different
ideals of art with no limit. Pop art was often used in advertising for magazines and newspapers. Two of Pop art's major artists wereAndy Warhol and
Roy Lichtenstein who created art in similar but also different ways.
Andy Warhol was an American Pop artist. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 6, 1928. He died on February 22, 1987, in New

Andy Warhol Accomplishments
When considering the life and works of Andy Warhol, one thing is agreed upon for good or bad, he changed the visual construction of the world we
live in. His window advertisements were the beginning of an era, where art would be seen in an array of forms away from the traditional paintings
and sculptures of the old world. He made people see everyday material objects in a whole new light; through "Pop Art" he could transform mundane
into extraordinary. He was a working man, a social climber, a builder, an acquirer of goods, and a known homosexual. These attributes all contributed to
the interesting and complicated nature of his art. One of the most significant decades in 20th–century art, the 1960s saw the rise of Pop Art, Op Art,
Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Performance Art, and Feminist Art, among countless other styles and movements. Artists began to notice that American
culture was filled with commercial images: on television and billboards, and in magazines and newspapers, commercial art was used to sell everything
from dish scrubbers to soup cans to cars to movie stars and their movies. Pop artists used commercial art techniques to create new artistic forms. Andy

Warhol used the silkscreen process, then a popular method of commercial printmaking, to duplicate Marilyn's face. The uneven inking of the image
translates her face with different degrees of clarity, and the tilt of the grid gives the piece a handmade quality. Warhol does not give us one Marilyn; he
gives us twenty–five. Perhaps he wants us to consider our obsession with celebrities, or to suggest that more is always better, especially in the case of
a celebrity with an already ubiquitous image. Either way, Andy Warhol was able to alter the way people saw Monroe, through imperfect repetition, he

The rest of his short life was spent visiting with celebrities and keeping up with the world's times. He tried to understand how the rest of the world saw
things, but just never got there. Sadly, Warhol died of a heart failure on March 9, 1987, still wearing his famous blond hair wig. Andy's diaries are not
actual written records of his day to day accounts, but they are audio recordings of his phone conversations to Pat Hackett every Monday through
Friday (from Wednesday, November 24, 1976 to Tuesday, February 17, 1987, just weeks before his death). Warhol originally intended these daily
records to be documentation of his minor "business" expenses. He was just audited and felt the need to be extra careful. "In a
word it was a diary. But whatever its broader objective, its narrow one, to satisfy tax auditors, was always on my mind" (Warhol xvi). Later
on, he felt the diaries were a great way to explain his everyday occurrences for more than a decade of his life. This view of his life from his eyes is
probably the most balanced view ever given. He may have changed since the 60's, but it is still the truest representation of Andy, himself. He never
expressed the key happenings of his life; it's as if we, the readers, already knew them. He just usually mentions the quick everyday type things such as
a cab ride to uptown New York. The first major influence on Andy
Warhol's life was the stepping stone of his artistic career, his enrollment in

Andy Warhol Analysis
There are few people in this world who can be called an american painter, printmaker, sculptor, draughtsman, illustrator, film maker, writer and
collector (Livingstone). In fact, there is only one man who can be called all of those, and that man is Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol was born in 1928
(Rodgers). Andy had many pieces of art by the time of his death in February of 1987. 32 Campbell's Soup Cans was one of Andy's most famous
works of art. In these pieces, he painted thirty–two soup cans which seemed to look the same but if the viewer looks at each painting closely, tiny
differences in the paintings come to light. "The tiny variations give the viewer hope that, despite the monotony of mass–produced society, glimpses of
originality can still break through" (Fallon 34). People who came to see Andy Warhol's 32 Campbell's Soup Cans were shocked a gallery would show
such dull, emotionless art. A few years later, Warhol became known as the "Prince of Pop," and owes his fame to the 32 Campbell's Soup Cans
painting set which, although dull and emotionless was the beginning of Andy's legacy (Edward 7–8). Andy Warhol rejected the idea of emotion in his
artwork and his passion for art was never reflected in his many pieces of art.

Andy 'Pope of Pop' Warhol
The American artist, Andy Warhol, was one of the major influential artists in the late 20th century, during the pop art movement. One of his art pieces
is called Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482) made in 1984 and currently located at The Andy Warhol Museum
in his hometown. For all of his art works (printmaking, painting, cinema, photography), Warhol gives a whole new different perspective and meaning
to society, by giving a "personality" to his work. The cultural icon once said, "In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes."
(QuotationsPage.com, 1994). I believe this is true, because no matter the object or celebrity icon, Warhol gave that chance to everyone and anything
that was "popular."
His birth name was Andrew Warhola Jr., later changing it toAndy Warhol shortly after moving to New York. He was born on August 6, 1928 and
raised in his hometown of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He passed away at 58 years old, from post–surgery in New York. His parents were Julia and Ondrej
Warhola, who immigrated to the United States in 1914, from Slovakia after their parents' deceased. Being the youngest of three siblings, he grew up
in a different lifestyle than his siblings. At six years old, Andy was diagnosed with Sydenham's chorea, where he was restricted to his bed for several

Andy Warhol Interpretation
The movie "Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol" describes his work as being focused on sex,
drugs, and beautiful people. All these of these aspects are a part of Andy Warhol's personal life and the
popular culture of the 1960s. Deeply rooted in the popular culture of the time were the ideas of images,
power and politics, all of which are shown through his work.
Representation is, as described in "Practices of Looking", is the use of language and images in order to
create a meaning and viewer interpretation. This interpretation is a way for the audience to either
better understand or alter their view of their world and reality. Many of Andy Warhol's artistic pieces

Andy Warhol's "32
Campbell's Soup Cans" exemplifies the same ideas of representation. As Warhol explained, the soup
cans were a part of his previous personal life, they were something that he had for lunch every single
day as a child. The Campbell's cans relate to Magritte because both painting merely represent the image
that is shown. Just as the pipe is not actually a pipe, the soup cans aren't actually soup cans. Both as
representations of aspects of the current culture. They create meaning, maybe evoke a memory.
One of Andy's pieces, "The Nose Job" illustrates the idea behind the myth of photographic truth. The
myth is the idea that while a photo is supposed to offer a "truth", there are always several truths and
limitations that come with a photograph. This idea explains that the truth of a photo is actually a myth
and not a truth at all. The artistic piece by Andy depicts two images, one with a woman whose nose is
overhung, sort of like a witch nose. The second image is one with the American beauty nose. This was a
time in history where physical appearance was becoming more emphasized and the beauty of

Andy Warhol was a famous American print artist. He did most of his works in the 1960's. This was an important time for popular culture. During
this period, new kinds of art, music, movies, and books were being created ("Andy Warhol and Color Discovering Design"). This is what inspired
Warhol to view art in a different perspective. Andy helped establish a new style of art known aspop art. Starting pop art was as a result of his hatred
for abstract expression. He printed images of famous people as well as ordinary objects. His works portrayed what was popular in the American
culture at that time. Warhol's art was different from other works despite the fact that many people did not pay so much attention to his creations.

I selected Andy Warhol because I have long admired his crazy, quirky, unconventional style of producing works of art from normal, everyday subjects

His duplicating the same image over and over again on the same piece signifies to me the redundancy corporate America uses to persuade us to crave

Andy Warhol's Marilyn is among my favorite pieces. This piece forever embalms her beautiful smile and glamorous look. The repetition, (should you
explain a bit about the repetition in the work?) which is also shown in Elvis Presley, Jackie's, Liz, etc., gives me a startling look into the fame and
usually misfortune of some of the world's largest icons.
Warhol's Thirty–two Soup Cans is another good example. The piece depicts sameness (though with different labels): same brand, same size, and same
paint surface. It mimics the condition of mass advertising, out of which his sensibility had grown.
Although the movies that Warhol made are a bit obscure to say the least, I admire his boldness in making movies that are about nothing. He started
producing and directing when he bought his first 16 mm movie camera in 1963. His first film entitled Sleep featured a man asleep in bed for eight
hours. His purpose was said to "control the viewer's attention and make them look at something they normally wouldn't notice." Other films such as
Chelsea Girls and Empire became underground classics. Unfortunately I haven't seen and cannot find any of these films. Ironically, my own style of

Andrej in Pittsburgh where he had found work in construction. The following year, 1922, Paul Warhola was born. Then in 1925 came John. Andy's

This is when Andy dropped the "a" from Warhola and began going by Warhol. Andy moved to New York with fellow painter Philip Pearlstein.
After a year of living with Pearlstein and some other roommates Warhol moved his mother from Pittsburgh to live with him in an apartment. The
dependency on her is seen up until her death. His first work in New York was very design oriented. Andy designed women's shoes and storefronts.
He won three Art Directors Club Awards and used his "business art" to make his money. Andy still did commercial work up until 1968 when he used
commissions as his main source of income. (Rodley) Warhol first emerged onto the fine art scene in 1962 with a solo show at the Ferus Gallery in
Los Angeles. This show promoted his first run of soup cans. Thirty–two different flavored soup cans were displayed. The paintings were listed at $100
each, not even one of the paintings sold and the whole lot was purchased by the gallery owner. (Koestenbaum 62) The next show put on by Warhol
was in New York. Here he had portraits of Marilyn and Elvis, as well as the disaster series. From here, Warhol's career as an American artist took off
and he made millions through his famed portraits. Warhol also enjoyed working with photography and film. His popularity was huge and everyone
wanted Warhol to put his spin on their product or logo. Andy became a New York socialite in the seventies and frequented clubs like the notorious

Before And After By Andy Warhol

  • 1. Before And After By Andy Warhol Before and After Andy Warhol Doubtlessly, Marilyn Diptych by Andy Warhol is the symbol of Pop Art movement for me; however, I like to express my reaction to Before and After, 1961, by Andy Warhol. The foremost reason for choosing this piece is I just saw it and my reaction is so fresh! Reading aboutAndy Warhol and his early stages as an iconic pop artist, Before and After attracts my attention, a black and white big size piece which shows a profile of a woman before and after a nose plastic surgery. Arthur C. Danto believes Andy Warhol is a person who can make an art piece out of nothing. "Before Warhol, Before and After would have been a piece of boilerplate commercial art, whose maker would be long forgotten." (Dante, 2) I agree ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Andy Warhol Influences Pop–Art rose from the desire of artists to create art that broke from the standard ideas of what art is and what art can be during the mid 1950s–1960s. However, they clung to images that were common to the mass public in order to ensure audiences could relate to works and also find a sense of familiarity with them. Subject matter such as celebrities, advertisements, comic books, e.t.c. was most often found in the movement. Andy Warhol was a key innovator and leader in the Pop Art movement and has since then become an easily recognizable icon of this time. He arguably helped pioneer many of the ideas and themes of Pop Art. In doing so, there was a major shift in subject matter from his early work to his most famous pieces. In the beginning, Warhol's work was personal and intimate. Over time, his popular pieces became less narrative and began focusing more on what was popular, such as his celebrity screen prints which eventually brought him notoriety. Warhol faced much discrimination in the early years of his work regarding the obviously homoerotic subject matter of his pieces. He detached the artist from the artwork over time because he recognized that his more blatantly homosexual–themed works would never gain traction or earn him respect in the art world. Though they are rarely discussed, Warhol's early work greatly impacted the themes he tackled in his later years. The censoring of his works such as "Boys Kissing Boys," "13 Most Wanted Men," and "Lonesome Cowboys" deterred Warhol from continuing his interest in homosexual subjects in his public works because of the backlash he received from their exhibition and as a result encouraged him to move towards more widely accepted and identifiable subjects such as celebrities and logos. Warhol's earlier works are often overlooked or go completely unmentioned in regards to his development as an artist, but their neglect only makes them that much more important. Long before he gained an interest in popular culture, Warhol created a series of intimate continuous line drawings titled "Boys Kissing Boys." Andy submitted them for review at the Tanager Gallery, and both times they were promptly rejected. In fact, they were the first works that Warhol ever submitted to a ... • 4. Andy Warhol Influences Andy Warhol Andy Warhol is an artist who is known by many. After overcoming many struggles, he pursued his goals and became one of the most recognizable artists in American history. Warhol is known for leading the Pop art movement in the United States. His influence on art in this time period was immense, and it can still be seen in modern art today. Through many popular pieces, Warhol brought art closer to the American people. He made it bigger, brighter, and more relatable. Because of this, he was declared one of the most influential artists in America. Born Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was stricken with many illnesses throughout his life. At the age of eight, Warhol was diagnosed with a disease known as St. Vitus Dance, a neurological disorder that causes involuntary movements throughout the body. It left him bedridden for almost a year. It was during this time that his mother gave him his first art lesson, hoping to keep his spirits up. He immediately fell in love with the subject. Along with the illness, Warhol had a pigment disorder that caused a discoloration in his skin. Despite the illnesses of his childhood, it was a chronic gallbladder issue that killed him. • 5. Andy Warhol Marilyn Diptych Andy Warhol is known as one of the biggest pop art icons as well as one of the most inspiring and influential artists who changed the way art was produced by the next generation. Warhol was not only the most well known Pop artist but was also somewhat of a catalyst of the movement. Warhol started his career working as a commercial illustrator in New York before he began to make art that would be shown in galleries. Warhol established his reputation as a Pop artist in the early 1960's. His Marilyn Diptych may have helped establish this title. 1962 was the year Andy Warhol first began to use the technique of screenprinting photographic images directly onto the canvas. The piece was created as a tribute to the Hollywood actress in 1962 just weeks after her death. The diptych consists of fifty images of Marilyn Monroe, half are in color while the other half are in black and white. In order to create this image Warhol used a silkscreen printing process, which he was well known for. This process allowed him to create uniformity in the color of Marilyn's face, lips and hair. He also used oil and acrylic in this image. Warhol uses an orange for the background and a bright golden yellow for her hair. The red in her lips varies from one picture to the next, some are bright ruby red while others are a dark crimson. A light lavender purple is used for her face that fades to a lighter hue as the faces continue down the page. Blue is used for Marilyn's eyeshadow as well as the collar of her shirt, and black is used to define her facial features as well as shadows. The black and white side Monroe's image is unevenly printed. The first column is filled with sharp images, the second column is a little muddied or smeared with black ink and in the next three columns the image begins to fade until the last column is all but a ghost of ... By 1960, Warhol had become one of the most successful commercial artists in New York. He drew with a unique and recognizable line; creating magazine illustrations, advertisements, book jackets, and album covers; but he had fine–art aspirations. Adopting images from popular culture, Warhol created many paintings that remain icons of 20th–century art. Warhol's big break finally came in 1962 with a one–man exhibition at the Ferus Gallery, in Los Angeles. 32 Campbell's Soup Cans was a creation of thirty–two paintings of soup cans, each a different flavor. • 8. Andy Warhol Essay The attitude of Warhol only confused society more. Instead of hiding his association with commercial art as other artists did, drawing and dividing the line between it and real art, he erased the line. "The Pop artists did images that anybody walking down Broadway could recognize in a split second."(Warhol) Pop artist figures competed in that art market where images and auras, no just objects, are offered for consumption. Warhol has never objected to this state of affairs, which he did so much to reveal – and indeed, to push to new extremes of sophistication. Warhol introduced society to a new kind of art that is now being recognized as real art, he pushed to boundaries and so called standards to the traditional ways. Warhol's first major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He produced the Campbell's Soup Can series in 1962 and the more famous prints of Marilyn Monroe in 1964. To expand Andy's finances, Fred Hughes encouraged him to concentrate on his paintings. Andy's Swiss dealer, Bruno Bischofberger, thought Andy should paint a series on a world leader for an exhibit at his gallery. He suggested Albert Einstein. Andy thought that Chairman Mao, the dictator of China, would be a better choice. "I've been reading so much about China...the only picture they ever have is of Mao Zedong. It's great. It looks like a silkscreen."(Warhol, p.117 price of pop) Bruno insisted that on one, especially Americans, would but them, since Mao was a widely hated communist. As usual Andy stuck to his instincts and set out to silkscreen a set of prints, line drawings, and paintings of the Chinese leader. Mao symbolized power over the lives of billions of people. Although, if Andy had lived in communist China during the Cultural Revelation, he most likely would have been imprisoned. Mao suppressed creativity, especially in the arts. But Andy felt sure that capitalist American collectors would find the images of Chairman Mao, both alien and familiar at the same time, irresistible. His work challenged the institution of art in so many ways, from the integration of popular culture iconography to his method of production in his "Factory"; Warhol confronted what made art "art", and redefined it throughout the span of his career. Personally, Warhol was obsessed with celebrity and mass reproduction of commodities of any kind. This infatuation greatly influenced the way he worked, by using screen–print, and appropriating images from pop–culture of the 60's, he was able to gain the infamy he so adored. His aspirations were so obvious in fact, that his father was able to recognize his talents and begin saving money for him to receive a college education. This education was relatively rare during the 1940's, and therefore set him apart from many other artists of the time. Throughout his later life, Warhol was able to represent himself as an artist who did not conform to the norms of society at the time. This piece, which was done in graphite, resembles the pieces that we created in Week Two. The details that are incorporated in both our pieces and the piece by Warhol are very similar as well. Another piece that I feel related back to our class very strongly was a self–portrait that Warhol painted in 1978. In this portrait, formed by acrylic and silkscreen ink on linen, Warhol portrays himself displaying a variety of emotions all in the same painting. I really felt as though this related back to the projects that we worked on during Week Three, primarily because during that week we focused on expression of a variety of emotions. Furthermore, I feel as though his use of a variety of emotions is much more complex than the single emotion that we were required to incorporate in our pieces. Andy Warhol Essay Hailed as the founding father of the Pop Art movement in the late 1950's and early 1960's, Andy Warhol, through his endeavors, brought forward society's obsession with mass culture and allowed it to become the subject of his art. He produced works that defied and challenged the popular notion of what art should be by disputing the "traditional conventions pertaining to the uniqueness, authenticity, and authorship" of art (Faerna 28). However, it is an injustice to say that Warhol's goals primarily included the desire to create such a ground–breaking and salient style of American art or to entertain the public by making his own artistic contributions. Later on in Andy Warhol's artistic career, his actions and vocalizations would further verify his enthusiasm towards securing unfathomable amounts of materialistic possessions and popularity. In one of his philosophy books entitled: The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, he informed his readers that "buying is much more American than thinking and [that he was] as American as they come" (Bourdon 352). This attitude contributed to the large sums of money that went into securing the priceless decoration pieces that he used to outfit "The Factory," his multi–floored studio. The Factory was bejeweled with a variety of ornate and precious items such as "nineteenth–century European bronze figures, dated English and American paintings, mahogany, rosewood, and bird's eye maple furniture, and replicas of Egyptian artifacts" (Artelino.com). Much of his future material can be placed in the category of such common, everyday objects, that were focused on in these early times. Nearly all of Warhol's works relate in one way or another to the commercially mass–produced machine product. Although Warhol did receive recognition for much of his commercial illustrations during those times, he was constantly pursuing another career, as a serious artist. His delicate ink drawings of shoes and cupids, among various others, had no place in a decade dominated by such heroic artists as William de Kooning and Jackson Pollock. But then he began working on a process called silk–screening. A large photographic image is transferred to a silk screen, placed on a canvas and inked from the back. • 17. A Brief Look at Andy Warhol Andy Warhol was, and continues to be one of the most popular artists of all time. The reason he was one of the most world–renowned artists was his "pop art" images, his Campbell's Soup Can being one of his most remembered pieces. (Rosenberg, n.d) Andy was intrigued by the sudden rise in consumer culture and mass production, which led to consumerism in America being the centre focus of his art. (Tate Org, n.d) In this essay I will be discussing Andy's journey to success, and how Warhol's art represents consumerism in America. Andy Warhol (1928–1987), was born Andrew Warhola to Slovak immigrants. He was an artist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who later in life, went on to move to New York city to pursue his career. (video reference) Some of Warhol's' earlypop art images included the 210 Coke Bottles, 200 One Dollar Bills, Campbell's Soup Cans, and Marilyn Monroe prints that were produced onto a large canvas using the repetitive technique of print making. This particular type of work that Warhol produced is something that had contributed to America's sudden infatuation with consumerism. (Tate Org, n.d) The pop art movement was effective because people who lived everyday lives were able to relate to Andy's artwork, as well as formulate their own opinions to what they think the ideas and reasoning behind Warhol's artwork were (Kearney, 2012) What influenced Andy to create artwork that included film stars who were apart of popular culture, was the interest he took in film stars ... His parents were Czechoslovakian immigrants named Ulja and Ondrej Warhola. He was a very smart child, but he suffered from a nervous disorder. This caused him to often stay home which lead him to collect pictures and listen to the radio about current events. All of this created his love for pop culture and modern celebrities. When he was sixteen years old, he graduated from high school and went to Carnegie Institute of Technology. When he graduated in 1949, he went to live in New York City and became a commercial illustrator. Then Andy Warhol began working for popular magazines like Vogue, Glamour, and the New Yorker. • 29. Andy Warhol Accomplishments When considering the life and works of Andy Warhol, one thing is agreed upon for good or bad, he changed the visual construction of the world we live in. His window advertisements were the beginning of an era, where art would be seen in an array of forms away from the traditional paintings and sculptures of the old world. He made people see everyday material objects in a whole new light; through "Pop Art" he could transform mundane into extraordinary. He was a working man, a social climber, a builder, an acquirer of goods, and a known homosexual. These attributes all contributed to the interesting and complicated nature of his art. One of the most significant decades in 20th–century art, the 1960s saw the rise of Pop Art, Op Art, Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Performance Art, and Feminist Art, among countless other styles and movements. Artists began to notice that American culture was filled with commercial images: on television and billboards, and in magazines and newspapers, commercial art was used to sell everything from dish scrubbers to soup cans to cars to movie stars and their movies. Pop artists used commercial art techniques to create new artistic forms. Andy Warhol was born in 1930, in the town of McKeesport, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Warhol used the silkscreen process, then a popular method of commercial printmaking, to duplicate Marilyn's face. The uneven inking of the image translates her face with different degrees of clarity, and the tilt of the grid gives the piece a handmade quality. Warhol does not give us one Marilyn; he gives us twenty–five. Perhaps he wants us to consider our obsession with celebrities, or to suggest that more is always better, especially in the case of a celebrity with an already ubiquitous image. Either way, Andy Warhol was able to alter the way people saw Monroe, through imperfect repetition, he delivered a more human aspect to the overly glorified ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Essay about Andy Warhol Andy Warhol Never before have I encountered more intriguing works of art than those done by Andy Warhol. I have been curious about his life ever since I saw his work in Milwaukee. I saw his famous work of the Campbell's Soup Can. By viewing this, one can tell he is not your average artist. I'm sure his life is full of interesting events that shaped him into who he was. As an artist myself, I would like to get to know the background of his life. I may then be able to appreciate his styles and understand why and how his works were created. His life is as interesting as his artistic masterpieces. The rest of his short life was spent visiting with celebrities and keeping up with the world's times. He tried to understand how the rest of the world saw things, but just never got there. Sadly, Warhol died of a heart failure on March 9, 1987, still wearing his famous blond hair wig. Andy's diaries are not actual written records of his day to day accounts, but they are audio recordings of his phone conversations to Pat Hackett every Monday through Friday (from Wednesday, November 24, 1976 to Tuesday, February 17, 1987, just weeks before his death). Warhol originally intended these daily records to be documentation of his minor "business" expenses. He was just audited and felt the need to be extra careful. "In a word it was a diary. But whatever its broader objective, its narrow one, to satisfy tax auditors, was always on my mind" (Warhol xvi). Later on, he felt the diaries were a great way to explain his everyday occurrences for more than a decade of his life. This view of his life from his eyes is probably the most balanced view ever given. He may have changed since the 60's, but it is still the truest representation of Andy, himself. He never expressed the key happenings of his life; it's as if we, the readers, already knew them. He just usually mentions the quick everyday type things such as a cab ride to uptown New York. The first major influence on Andy Warhol's life was the stepping stone of his artistic career, his enrollment in and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Andy Warhol Analysis There are few people in this world who can be called an american painter, printmaker, sculptor, draughtsman, illustrator, film maker, writer and collector (Livingstone). In fact, there is only one man who can be called all of those, and that man is Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol was born in 1928 (Rodgers). Andy had many pieces of art by the time of his death in February of 1987. 32 Campbell's Soup Cans was one of Andy's most famous works of art. In these pieces, he painted thirty–two soup cans which seemed to look the same but if the viewer looks at each painting closely, tiny differences in the paintings come to light. "The tiny variations give the viewer hope that, despite the monotony of mass–produced society, glimpses of originality can still break through" (Fallon 34). People who came to see Andy Warhol's 32 Campbell's Soup Cans were shocked a gallery would show such dull, emotionless art. A few years later, Warhol became known as the "Prince of Pop," and owes his fame to the 32 Campbell's Soup Cans painting set which, although dull and emotionless was the beginning of Andy's legacy (Edward 7–8). Andy Warhol rejected the idea of emotion in his artwork and his passion for art was never reflected in his many pieces of art. Andy Warhol studied at Carnegie Institute ... In November of the year 1972, Andy's mother Julia died. He paid for all the funeral expenses but never made an appearance at Julia's funeral. Andy's brother said that Andy was "deathly afraid" of death (Livingstone). "As usual, when someone near Warhol died, the press pinned part of the blame on him." People sent Andy letters saying that he had neglected his own mother (Livingstone). He had so many difficulties in his life at this point in time so he should have used them to inspire his artwork and also to help him show passion and emotion in his ... • 32. Andy 'Pope of Pop' Warhol The American artist, Andy Warhol, was one of the major influential artists in the late 20th century, during the pop art movement. One of his art pieces is called Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482) made in 1984 and currently located at The Andy Warhol Museum in his hometown. For all of his art works (printmaking, painting, cinema, photography), Warhol gives a whole new different perspective and meaning to society, by giving a "personality" to his work. The cultural icon once said, "In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes." (QuotationsPage.com, 1994). I believe this is true, because no matter the object or celebrity icon, Warhol gave that chance to everyone and anything that was "popular." His birth name was Andrew Warhola Jr., later changing it toAndy Warhol shortly after moving to New York. He was born on August 6, 1928 and raised in his hometown of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He passed away at 58 years old, from post–surgery in New York. His parents were Julia and Ondrej Warhola, who immigrated to the United States in 1914, from Slovakia after their parents' deceased. Being the youngest of three siblings, he grew up in a different lifestyle than his siblings. At six years old, Andy was diagnosed with Sydenham's chorea, where he was restricted to his bed for several months, however he was entertained with his mom artistic skills, teaching him how to draw, trace, and print images. • 33. Andy Warhol Interpretation The movie "Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol" describes his work as being focused on sex, drugs, and beautiful people. All these of these aspects are a part of Andy Warhol's personal life and the popular culture of the 1960s. Deeply rooted in the popular culture of the time were the ideas of images, power and politics, all of which are shown through his work. Representation is, as described in "Practices of Looking", is the use of language and images in order to create a meaning and viewer interpretation. This interpretation is a way for the audience to either better understand or alter their view of their world and reality. Andy Warhol's "32 Campbell's Soup Cans" exemplifies the same ideas of representation. As Warhol explained, the soup cans were a part of his previous personal life, they were something that he had for lunch every single day as a child. The Campbell's cans relate to Magritte because both painting merely represent the image that is shown. Just as the pipe is not actually a pipe, the soup cans aren't actually soup cans. Both as representations of aspects of the current culture. They create meaning, maybe evoke a memory.

The myth is the idea that while a photo is supposed to offer a "truth", there are always several truths and limitations that come with a photograph. This idea explains that the truth of a photo is actually a myth and not a truth at all. • 40. Andy Warhol Essay I selected Andy Warhol because I have long admired his crazy, quirky, unconventional style of producing works of art from normal, everyday subjects ranging from inanimate, normally unnoticed objects to pop culture celebrity icons. I first heard of him in 1986 when his show Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes aired on MTV. The show featured Andy interviewing what he thought was the next up –and–coming musical sensations about to get their "fifteen minutes of fame." Two years later on a poster in the mall at a Spencer's store I saw Warhol's famous Campbell's Soup Can work of art. At first glance I thought the poster was ridiculous because it featured such a simplistic, moronic image. Then, my artistic eye and appreciation for the eccentric ... His duplicating the same image over and over again on the same piece signifies to me the redundancy corporate America uses to persuade us to crave certain products or celebrities. Andy Warhol's Marilyn is among my favorite pieces. This piece forever embalms her beautiful smile and glamorous look. The repetition, (should you explain a bit about the repetition in the work?) which is also shown in Elvis Presley, Jackie's, Liz, etc., gives me a startling look into the fame and usually misfortune of some of the world's largest icons. Warhol's Thirty–two Soup Cans is another good example. The piece depicts sameness (though with different labels): same brand, same size, and same paint surface. It mimics the condition of mass advertising, out of which his sensibility had grown. Although the movies that Warhol made are a bit obscure to say the least, I admire his boldness in making movies that are about nothing. He started producing and directing when he bought his first 16 mm movie camera in 1963. His first film entitled Sleep featured a man asleep in bed for eight hours. His purpose was said to "control the viewer's attention and make them look at something they normally wouldn't notice." Other films such as Chelsea Girls and Empire became underground classics. Unfortunately I haven't seen and cannot find any of these films. Ironically, my own style of video recording and being an aspiring director have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After a year of living with Pearlstein and some other roommates Warhol moved his mother from Pittsburgh to live with him in an apartment. The dependency on her is seen up until her death. His first work in New York was very design oriented. Andy designed women's shoes and storefronts. He won three Art Directors Club Awards and used his "business art" to make his money. Andy still did commercial work up until 1968 when he used commissions as his main source of income. (Rodley) Warhol first emerged onto the fine art scene in 1962 with a solo show at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles. This show promoted his first run of soup cans. Thirty–two different flavored soup cans were displayed. The paintings were listed at $100 each, not even one of the paintings sold and the whole lot was purchased by the gallery owner. (Koestenbaum 62) The next show put on by Warhol was in New York. Here he had portraits of Marilyn and Elvis, as well as the disaster series. From here, Warhol's career as an American artist took off and he made millions through his famed portraits. Warhol also enjoyed working with photography and film.
