ideas in the United States of America. One new idea was fashion, which identifies the social class

The purpose of this paper will be to address what social stratification is, and why sociologists
consider it crucial to our understanding of today's society. In addition it will also be discussing the
three dimensions of social stratification and how we think its changed since the 1970s and 80s to

The African American middle class has risen since the 1970s and 80s although they are still being
paid less than the while males which shows progress since the civil rights movement. In comparison
a 2004 study shows that the Latino population is loosing its hold on wealth only controlling 10% of
the wealth in the United States. Karl Marx's theory on stratification best justifies the change the
United States has faced from the 1970s to present day. Karl Marx's theory focuses on capitalism in
which the owner of a company's only goal is to produce as much profit as possible for him or
herself. The bourgeoisie or capitalist class owns the company and the proletariats work for the
company. The bourgeoisie look for ways to lower wages and maximize profit by adding machines
that reduced dependence on highly skilled proletariats. This makes no proletariats special because
they are easily replaceable. This best explains the change from the 1970s and 80s to now because all
the name brand companies are outsourcing and making the product cheaper to make which is giving
the owner of the companies more money and taking jobs away from the middle class and working

In the last few decades, the American have become proud of the American Dream, which they
believe in coming true, as one working hard now will have a glossy life in the future. However,
there is a wonder whether the American is living in the American Dream while the inequality still

By giving the European nations' experiences in solving the unemployed problem, Foroohar hopes
American mobility can be improved, and American Dream can come true. Although both Michaels
and Foroohar identify the effect of classism and economic inequality to the American Dream in
society, Michaels sees the inequality most through the culture and historical point of view,
meanwhile, Foroohar stands on the statistics side and social experiences to talk about that. Both
articles achieve their targets by showing the classism and economic inequalities exist conspicuous,
and the American Dream is limited, especially for the poor and lower class. Although Michaels and
Foroohar both talk about the gap between the rich and the poor in the socioeconomic ladder, they
expand different thoughts, which have relative. Michaels shares the morals and attitudes are needed

n the age of globalization, the rich and poor divide has grown into a chasm. Richer and more
developed countries enjoy access to technology and a higher standard of living, whereas the poorer
and less developed countries are struggling with poverty, malnutrition and lack of basic amenities.

investments. By helping poor neighboring countries, the richer nations would be able to make the
entire region an attractive location for investors and this in turn would bring more investments to the

Depending on which law your break it is very simple to get away with breaking the law but however

expensive and how it complicated terms in the way they work. For example, the health insurance

about the growing gap between the upper and lower class in modern society. Reich's article is
certainly an eye opener regarding unemployment, and how it is currently surfacing from the

The wealth gap in the United States is way off compared to what people may think it is or what they
would like it to be. I'm actually very shocked of what I found. If we divide the entire United States
in five different groups, you can say the first group is the poor, the second is the middle class, third
and fourth are even progressively richer and the fifth group is the richest. Personally I would say
maybe 40 to 50 percent of Americans are poor. They probably make nothing to twenty thousand a

I think this would be a good thing because the wealth is distributed fairly and we still have hard
workers and smart workers. Americans thought 60 percent were the poor, 20 percent were middle
class and the remaining 20 percent was between the rich and richer (Gilson). The thing that shocked
me the most is the actual distribution of wealth. A whopping 90 percent of people are considered the
poor and only make an average of 29,840 dollars a year (Gilson). That's almost the entire United

provides a very interesting account of how the rich are being treated by the criminal justice system

started his book by stating that the recently noted decline in crime rate is skewed. This is clear in the
12th page of his book when he stated that After more than 20 years of telling us that crime was

To compare inequality among nations, incomes and living standards of their citizens should be
reviewed. The World Bank has determined that people living on $1 per day in developing countries
and people living on $2 per day in medium economies are considered poor (Infoplease, 2005). In

Lifeboat Ethics is a metaphor for depicting the process of how resources and wealth are distributed
as described by ecologist Garrett Hardin. Hardin published "Lifeboat Ethics: The Case against
Helping the Poor," rationalizing that wealthy nations should not be held accountable for assisting the
needs of the poor. Hardin defends his utilitarianism "good for all" approach regarding the
distribution of resources through rationalization with the use of statistical values and "commons" to

Greater populations will take its toll on the environment and rich nations giving poorer nations food,
allowing their population to grow unchecked will lower the standard of living of those that are
already there and in the end will have a negative effect. Hardin then presents a good alternative to

inequality. It is commonly used to oppose the free market system also known as capitalism (Lee,
1973). A free market is a market economy whereby the prices of goods and services are set freely
depending on the agreement between the vendors and the consumers. In this systems, the forces of
demand and supply are free from any interference of the government, price setting monopoly or
other authorities. A free market is very different from a regulated market. In a regulated market, the
government takes part in supply and demand through non–market methods such as price fixing and
creating barriers to market entry.
A free market has its sets of advantages and disadvantages. To begin with, the advantages of this
type of market are: the market offers a variety of goods and services to meet the consumer needs, it
responds quickly to the needs of the consumers, and lastly, it encourages the use of the latest
methods and machines in the production of goods and services. On the other hand, the
