Planet Of The Apes Film Analysis
Beginning a theme of taking older films and recreating them in his own style, 'Planet of the Apes' was based off Pierre Boulle's 1963 novel and a
1968 film version. The premise was about an American man that landed on a planet ruled by apes, which was released in 2001. Although the film has a
rather shaky reputation, it forever changed Burton's life. While filming, actress Helena Bonham Carter, who was playing one of the lead characters,
caught Tim's eye. The two would later start a professional relationship, with her starring in many of his films like Depp, as well as a personal
relationship. Although they never married, they lived like had and they have two children together; Billy Raymond and Nell. However, the pair split in

Personally, I believe the reason is the same as to why so many people love him and his films. He's different, and in a very good, yet odd way.
Nobody has really seen anything like what he has envisioned and brought to the table. Not only is he extremely unique, but he is also very relatable
to anyone who has ever felt like an outsider or that they were weird or even rejected by the world. In this way, his audience can really connect with his
films, even though they are out–of–this world imaginative. Honestly, Burton is my all–time favorite director, and for the same reasons as anyone else, I
can identify with his art. "One person's craziness is another person's reality" he has said. Not all of his work is mind–blowing or even amazing, but you
can't deny that when you watch one of his films you feel just a little bit transported to another world. He has transformed modern cinema with his
'Burtonesque' style and has also inspired many other directors, actors, artists, films, and shows. He's also given actors dozens of opportunities to
start up and expand their careers. Maybe his films aren't everybody's 'cup of tea', but there's just no denying his glittering talent. It is inspiring to see
someone come from such a rough beginning to come out on top, giving hope to many. Tim Burton has truly left his stamp on the world of film, as I
believe to be one of history's best directors, and changed the world of cinema and art

Theme Of Isolation In Frankenstein
The film opens on the main character Victor Van Dort, the son of recently wealthy aristocrats, being forced to Victoria, daughter to a family of
even wealthier aristocrats. (Russell) The Van Dorts are looking to raise their status in society through the marriage to the aristocrats, and the
Everglots are hoping to further bury their secret bankruptcy and get their hands on the money they, wrongly, assume Victor's family has. At the
very beginning, Victor is shown to be a very reserved, shy character when he is shown alone in his room drawing a butterfly while his parents sing
excitedly about the upcoming wedding. This also emphasizes the drastic differing opinions about the wedding, and how Victor obviously dreads it.
"This introduces the classic character of the old foolish woman through Victor's mother and gives the audience a silent look into the character of
Victor. He is isolated at the beginning by his own will." (Drouillard). Isolated protagonists are used often in Gothic fiction as seen in another Victor,
this one Frankenstein, who hides himself away to focus on work. Before the wedding, it's very obvious that Victor is nervous, and the parents are just
as worried that he will not perform correctly at the ceremony. As he rehearses in the woods, Victor manages to properly say his vows, puts the
wedding ring on a hand–like branch, and everything goes smoothly. Of course, in a fantasy, nothing truly goes as planned and the branch–like hand is
revealed to be a real hand.

King's Speech : The Role Of A King
The role of a king, apart from his other responsibilities include – being calm and centered, being decisive and having personal integrity, being hard

Movie Analysis : ' The Corpse Bride '
Nothing will ever go according to plan. Tests are failed, people are changed, loves are lost. As is the case with Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride,
following the story of an elegiac young man, the son of newly rich fishmongers. Victor Van Dort (Johnny Depp) is betrothed to Victoria Everglot
(Emily Watson), the daughter of penniless aristocrats, to heighten both of their families, and despite his initial terror, he falls in love with her.
Unfortunately, Victor has a horrible time at the rehearsal and cannot remember his vows, leading him off into the words where, while practicing, he
inadvertently puts the wedding ring on the Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter), a young woman who was murdered on her wedding day for her
parent 's money. Victor's adventures in the land of the dead tear him between his new wife and his intended bride, while teaching him more about
himself and those around him. Throughout the film, the elegantly lifelike clay figures portray the lifelessness of the living juxtaposed with the
liveliness of the dead in Victorian Europe.
The motion picture starts with a close up shot of a desk and hands that open up an empty book. The screen then changes to a picture of a cartoon
kid and dog in a picture frame and we are told that this is a Tim Burton production early on as this is likely to engage the audience as he is rather
famous for strange excellent films. The camera then goes to a close up shot of a hand, picking up a feather pen from an ink pot. The audience

The Fight Club Movie
Introduction
The movie "Fight Club" is an American based film that was produced in 1999. The production was done after the release of a novel in 1996 by Chuck
Palahniuk. The movie involved stars such as Edward Norton, Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter and David Fincher is the director. An overall
analysis of the video shows that it is a very disturbing film in that it questions our conscience, our phobias, obsessions, reality as well as habits. Many
individuals up to date presume that it is visually stimulating, insightful and at the same time provoking.
In the movie, the "Narrator" suffers from insomnia and during his pursuit of trying to change his life, he meets a soap maker (Tyler) with whom
together they open an underground fight club that evolves into something they never expected. The nameless narrator attends several support groups
as a way of dealing with his insomniac state where he also meets a fellow fake attendee (Marla) and finally finds that his life is becoming quite more
comfortable. Together with the two individuals, the form the soap making scheme and the fight club which later turns out to be a platform for
competitive rivalry involving power and love. Finally, a surprise ending comes when the narrator's hidden agenda is exposed, and he eventually accepts
the bitter truth that Tyler is not who he thought he was.

The Film Hamlet By William Shakespeare
The film Hamlet by William Shakespeare was made by two directors in two different versions which one was Kenneth Branagh and the other Franco
Zeffirelli. By watching the four scenes of the play of the two versions, the viewer has come up to the conclusion that Kenneth Branagh's version best
captures the essence of the play in terms of costume design, acting, directing, and cinematography. The directing and cinematography in Act IV, Scene
V the Ophelia Madness Scene as well as the acting, costume design in Act V, Scene II the Final Scene showed that Branagh's version of the filmHamlet
is the most effective.
Branagh's use of directing in Act IV, Scene V in the Ophelia Madness Scene helped best to present the scene in a most effective way. Ophelia has
gone mad due to her father's loss, people have been suspicious and disturbed by the death as well. Laertes who is Ophelia's sister has come back
from France with a mob of commoners who they call Laertes "lord" and people say that Laertes shall become king. He enters the hall with an eager
ready to avenge his father's death, Claudius the king tries to calm him down by acknowledging that Polonius is dead. The director in Branagh's
version provided a padded cell for Ophelia where it shows that she really has gone insane and when she entered the hall, began singing about chaos,
death, and unsatisfied love. The clothes she was wrapped in demonstrates an excellent illustration of her madness because when the

Style Analysis Of Tim Burton's 'Corpse Bride And Edward...
Style Analysis Essay "We do not fear the unknown. We fear what we think about the unknown." Is a quote from Teal Swan. This idea is incorporated
into a lot of director's movies, however Tim Burton, a creator of many famous movies, would probably have one of the best understandings of this
idea. This is because Burton tends to use ideas about the unknown in many of his films. However, these ideas of fearing the unknown and curiosity of
the unknown are especially prominent in Burton's films such as The Corpse Bride and Edward Scissorhands. Burton typically uses techniques such as
some sort of misfit protagonist that is different than most people and a judgmental society that treats said protagonist in terrible ways to convey to the
audience that society wrongly teaches people to fear the unknown.
Burton typically has the misfit protagonist deemed an outcast by their society or the society they enter. For instance, in The Corpse Bride the
protagonist, Victor Van Dort, is a sort of clumsy and, quite frankly, normal character. Yet despite how normal Victor is, his society, or more specifically,
his parents and soon–to–be in–laws, expect him to be this perfect person and, inevitably, fails to do so at his wedding rehearsal, because of this he is
deemed an outcast by his parents and soon–to–be in–laws. Eventually Victor runs away from his town and finds himself in an unknown place. Being in
this place made Victor realize that he had no reason to fear the dead in the sort of

Essay on Conscience of Queen Gertrude in Shakespeare's...
The Conscience of the Queen William Shakespeare's play Hamlet is perhaps one of his most intriguing and scandalous pieces of work. One character
who is liable for much of this excitement and outrage is Hamlet's mother, Queen Gertrude. To some readers and critics, Gertrude is conceived as an
erratic, superficial and sensual woman. Others discern the Queen as an earnest, intellectual and sagacious woman whose tragic fault is her yearning for
sexual satisfaction. Throughout the text, there are several legitimate arguments for both sides, but in the end, Hamlet seems to sum up the Queen's true
persona with the words "Frailty, thy name is woman". Evidence of Gertrude's true nature can be found in many instances through out the play such ...

Hamlet's conflict with Gertrude is a main part of this play. A few characters in this play give insight on Gertrude that point in the direction of her
being shallow and evil. One example is late in the first act when Hamlet cries "O most pernicious woman! O villain, villain, smiling, dammed
villain!" This is when, deep in thought, Hamlet realizes that his mother could have possibly taken part in his father's death and he thinks she's evil.
In Hamlet's head, everything makes sense now because it is now understandable how she got over the death so quickly. This is the first time that
Hamlet realizes his mother's true character. This is a very imperative notion about Gertrude's personality because for her very own son to think a
validation like this is extreme. Often times a man will love and defend his mother until the day he dies, while Hamlet, on the other hand, is thinking of
her playing a role in his father's death. When the ghost speaks of Gertrude's speedy marriage, it provides more evidence of her shallowness. The King's
ghost says that she is "seeming virtuous". He is basically saying that while she looks holy and righteous, she isn't. The new King offered her something
(or many things) that she wanted, and she took the bait and married him. She didn't care that her husband had just died, or how her son would react to

Why Does A Movie Flop
Films are both considered an art and a form of entertainment. To make such great films, you need an amazing director, wonderful cast and crew, and
one hell of a budget. But then again if a movie has all of these then why do some films tend to just not make it into the box office charts. Why does a
movie flop anyways? There are a lot of films that unfortunately just didn't make it and we will be stating a few examples of them in just a few but let
me just enlighten you as to why these films tend to flop. One of the things that has to be considered is its competition.
If your film is directed by an Academy Award director with an Academy Award winning cast, but the movie you are competing with did a great job at
advertising their film especially on the social media, your film might not make it. There are a lot of great films (technically) that flopped not because it
is an awful film but because the people just don't find it interesting enough. So here are some films that didn't quite make it into the box office charts,
some might surprise you.

So it was a big surprise when this Disney film didn't manage to make it through. Depp, alongside Armie Hammer and Helena Bonham Cart, stars in
this western action film. According to critics, it didn't quite make because it was way too over–budget and it was completely unnecessary. It wouldn't
be considered a flop if the budget is less than $375 million because that just meant that they need to make more than $600 million to be considered
profitable for the studio. But unfortunately, the film only made $260.5 million, which still a lot for a film but obviously Disney didn't get enough
money back, that is why it is considered as a

Hamlet Soliloquy Analysis
"To be or not to be", one of Shakespeare's most well known lines (3.1.64). In Act 3 of Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet begins a soliloquy with the
famous line "To be or not to be." Throughout this scene, Hamlet contemplates suicide and whether or not life is worth all the suffering. While he
initially views sleep as a solution, he realizes that with sleep comes dreams and that those dreams may be good or just as miserable as life. Later, he
touches on the fear of the unknown and that the fear of death keeps people from taking their own lives. Following his soliloquy, he encounters Ophelia
and she returns gifts to him. Hamlet is furious at his mother and already very depressed, so when Ophelia comes to return gifts Hamlet had given her,
he views this is a form of rejection. This rejection compounded with the other issues Hamlet is dealing with, such as his father's murder and his mother
marrying his uncle, intensifies his anger. He in turn tells her "Why woulst thou be a breeder of sinners? I am myself indifferent honest, but yet could
accuse me of such things that it were better my mother had not borne me: I am very proud, revengeful, ambitious, with more offense at beck than I
have thoughts to put them in, imagination to give them shape, or time to act them in. What should such fellows as I do crawling between earth and
heaven?" (3.1.131–139). He argues that women should all grow up to be nuns and never have children, because children grow up to be corrupt
adults. Also, Hamlet expresses his frustration when he mentions "I have heard of your paintings too, well enough. God hath given you one face and
you make yourselves another. You jig and amble, and your wantonness your ignorance. Go to, I'll have no more on 't. It hath made me mad. I say we
will have no more marriage" (3.1. 154–160). He believes women's beauty is a trick and if they did not marry, there would be less confusion. While he
may be mad at Ophelia and blame her for making him believe he may have loved her, he is really more angry at his mother because he does not think
she was loyal to King Hamlet. Hamlet's anger stems from his hatred for his mother's actions because she so quickly jumped from "loving" her former
husband to "loving" Claudius.

Eyes Wide Shut Analysis
Stanley Kubrick, known for his critically acclaimed films, sent the world into a frenzy with the film he released right before his death. His last movie,
Eyes Wide Shut, based on Traumnovelle (Dream Story), is a social commentary on the consumerist society we live in today and its relationship to the
class system in place. It is important to note that the backdrop of the film is Christmastime in New York City. People who are familiar with Kubrick's
films are aware that everything the camera passes is relevant to his overall message. Notorious for his perfectionism, it was not surprising to find he
had, "sent a designer to New York to measure the exact width of the streets and the distance between newspaper vending machines," in order to
reconstruct Greenwich Village in London, where they were filming (Nicholson 2017). The film took 15 months to complete, earning Kubrick the
Guinness world record for longest continual film shoot. This time frame is more believable after learning he once made Tom Cruise shoot 95 takes of
him walking through a door, Cruise even developed an ulcer working under Kubrick. However, all the extreme measures paid off. Even the
background actors play an important role in the film. People are mulling around the streets of Greenwich Village running errands, living their lives, and
enjoying the short lived holiday ambience. In almost every one of the shots in the film, there is a Christmas tree lit with rainbow lights affecting the
clarity of the air. In

Frankenstein as a Non-Epistolary Film Essay
Frankenstein as a Non–Epistolary Film
A novel written in the epistolary style is by nature difficult to adapt to film. The director, perhaps already adept at navigating the ragged breakers of
length–contraction and visual style, is forced to deal with the additional sandbar presented by a plot format in which no visual action occurs and, more
often than not, this difficulty consequently runs the film aground. Kenneth Branagh, in bringing Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to the screen as Mary
Shelley's Frankenstein, succinctly sidesteps this potential pitfall by completely discarding the epistolary format; rather than existing as a lengthy letter
penned to Mrs. Saville, the plot is presented as an overheard conversation between Victor and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Continuing, Mrs. Saville is presented as incapable of understanding Walton's frigid trip: he supposes she shall not "understand this feeling" (Shelley
15), and that her surprise at discovering Victor "would have been boundless" (Shelley 22). Margaret is therefore illustrated as a woman unqualified to
truly comprehend the extraordinary; although the text is primarily addressed to her, its subject matter, consisting of astonishing expeditions, fantastical
scientific discoveries, and "blood congealed with horror" (Shelley 156), would be quite outside her domestic sphere of "a husband, and lovely
children" (Shelley 157). As the novel is represented as the non–fictional writings of an arctic explorer, in order to find its way into print Mrs. Saville
must edit and publish Walton's account; logically, Walton's framing letters to his sister are superfluous if he himself edited the story, as he more likely
would have written his own travelogue detailing his expedition upon his return rather then printing personal letters. Given Mrs. Saville's inability to
appreciate the fantastic elements within Walton's story, it is entirely possible that she, in editing the tale for print, altered any or all of Walton's,
Victor's, and the Creature's accounts in some unknowable fashion before publishing them. The reader, realizing that a second party may have altered
and thus contaminated the narratives, is

Analysis Of Edward Bloom And William Bloom
Tim Burton presents Big Fish whereby, protagonist; Edward Bloom reveals exaggerated primitive memories of his past. Edward's past includes a
series of events that are considered an ironic romance, as his life demonstrates how one's perspective can impact the portrayal of a story, in this
case being one's past and how it is seen to be lived. Edward tells his tales multiple times, that he believed himself, is the true version of events,
consequently frustrating his son William Bloom as, when William was young his father was scarcely around as work occupied majority of his
time. Nonetheless, the tales presented by Edward give the audience an insight to what Edward went through from childhood through into adulthood.
Edward Bloom and William Bloom, are two main characters, whose relationship is deemed to be the most unstable. It is clear that William's
patients towards his father's stories, starts to wear thin; especially at Williams wedding, where William believes his father "tried to outdo him",
indicating a false father figure, as a real father is highly likely to support their child and not try to take the spotlight away from their child. This
craving for attention leaves the two in abandoned communication for a period of three years. The number three is significant as three contains
beginning, middle and end. Once three years has passed, Williams wife is with child, yet Edward's life was towards the end as he was on his death
bed due to cancer taking over. Leaving the

Magic Realism In The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World
At its most basic level, magical realism is the mixture of the supernatural with realistic characteristics. This genre is known for having specific traits
to help classify if a work of art is in the genre. One work of art that exemplifies almost all of these traits is "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the
World" by Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez. After a washed up corpse is found in a small village, the people of the city fall in love with the man's tallness
and his handsomeness. They quickly decide to worship him and they want to better themselves because of him. On the other hand, one example of a
misconception of magical realism is Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton. The central character, Edward Bloom, recounts his life with exaggerated stories
to his son Will, who thinks the embellished tales are unnecessary and insulting. As his father is sick, Will travels to be with him. During his visit, Will
gets a more in–depth view of his father's real life and the truth of what his life actually was. This film has some of the traits, but not enough to classify
it as part of the magical realism genre.
One crucial trait needed for magical realism is the idea of irreducible magic. This means magic that cannot be normalized or reduced throughout the
work of art. Big Fish very clearly breaks this characteristic. In Edward's stories, he magnifies the sense of magic. When Ed passes away, Will
discovers that all the magic Ed encountered throughout his life was relatively normal compared to

The Theme Of Madness In Hamlet And Shakespeare's Hamlet
Shakespeare is known for the many reoccurring themes in his tragedies. One such theme is that of love causing madness. One prime example of this
is Ophelia's downfall in Hamlet. Hamlet has been transformed into motion pictures any times, and two show the theme of madness in Ophelia in
different ways: the 1990 version of Hamlet created by Zeffirelli and the 1996 version by Branagh. While both actresses that played Ophelia conveyed
the madness well, they took different approaches in terms of vocal inflections and movements. The directors also took different approaches to portray
madness like costumes and settings. Lastly, while Bonham–Carter's Ophelia in 1990 shows some ambiguity in the reasons behind her madness,
Blanchett's Ophelia in 1996 does not.
The major scene that shows the madness Ophelia has descended into is in act four scene five. The two portrayals by Helen Bonham– Carter and Kate
Blanchett are quite different as shown by their acting of this scene. First, Bonham–Carter's movements appear much more calculated than Blanchett's
movements, as Blanchett primarily lies on the ground trashing out in a random manner. Bonham–Carter, on the other hand, walks around the set with a
purposeful stride (witchywoman4u12, 2011). Next, they also speak quite differently. Blanchett screams the majority of the speech and speaks with an
inflection that speaks of unsureness. Bonham–Carter speaks with a calmer tone like she knows exactly what she is saying. Lastly, when Ophelia has
interactions between herself and another character like her conversations with Gertrude and Claudius, Blanchett's Ophelia appears to be unaware of her
surroundings and other people initiate the conversations (Aaron Bradford, 2013). Unlike the 1996 version, Bonham–Carter gets up close to people
when she is talking to them, and initiates the conversations between herself and Claudius and Gertrude. This happens during Ophelia's lines, "Where
is the beauteous majesty of Denmark...How should I your true love know From another one? By his cockle hat and staff, And his sandal shoon...Say
you? nay, pray you, mark. He is dead and gone, lady, He is dead and gone; At his head a grass–green turf, At his heels a stone," (IV.v, Shakespeare,

Political Allegory In Alice In Wonderland
One historical approach to Carroll's Alice in Wonderland invites the reader to observe the trends, culture as well as the philosophy of the Victorian Era
for a personalized interpretation of Alice's encounters in Wonderland. Usage of the Historical approach may seem demoralizing in sheer scope; it is
quite imperative to understand that the novel was written during a specific time period that, in itself, contained unique habits and concerns. Within the
following pages, the connections with the Victorian era in terms of the middle class' upbringing of children, notions of order, reasoning, logic and
politesse will be further understood. Political allegory, a powerful theme that reflects brilliantly in the real life to England; the Wonderland, the

by the Queen of Hearts, who, correspondingly was Queen Victoria. There were pieces of evidence that Carroll was not overly timid by the Queen. The
"aristocracy" of violence that was assigned to Wonderland (the Queen and the Duchess) as well as the ludicrous mangling of justice in the trial
("Sentence first, then verdict"; the British system indeed at that time in shambles.) are often used as the evidence that Alice belonged to perhaps the
genre of political satire more than Carroll had realized. Another political approach is to treat Alice as an allegory for colonization. During the

Outcast In Tim Burton
In society, young people are often told who they should be and what they should do with their lives. By using outcast protagonists and strained
family relationships, Tim Burton emphasizes that society is always going to look down on strangeness, but having a strong family relationship
can help build confidence. Through the films Big Fish and Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton conveys how being an outcast can affect your future.
In Big Fish, Edward Bloom decides to leave the town of Ashton with a giant, whom he befriended, named Karl. He then comes across 2 paths and
decides to take the one that was much older and more run down than the other one. Finally, he discovers a town named Spectre, a place where
nobody leaves because it is so perfect. Edward decides that he must leave because he doesn't fit in with everyone that is there. Before leaving
Edward says, "Now there comes a point where a reasonable man will swallow his pride and admit that he has made a terrible mistake. The truth is,
I was never a reasonable man." Leaving Spectre illustrated that Edward wasn't like normal people and it was made clear by just listening to his
stories. Even his story telling made him abnormal in a sense because he was the only one telling these outrageous stories. In Alice in Wonderland, at

The Things They Carried, And Big Fish And The American Dream
Patrick Rothfuss, an American writer, once said, "It's like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That
story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story." Rothfuss explains how storytelling is always a part of everyone. Stories are told
in different ways, and those stories shape the person tremendously. Many of the stories told today are what shape the audience. In "The Things they
Carried", by Tim O'Brien, and the film "Big Fish", directed by Tim Burton, stories are portrayed to be productive because the characters all have an
American Dream and their stories help the characters achieve tasks to get to their American Dream.
According to "Why Americans are Obsessed with Telling their Stories", by Ozy Qi Wang, "American parents regard parent

priority of personal storytelling: They encourage children to share their stories, pay great attention to and are sympathetic with children's thoughts and
feelings, and create opportunities to re–experience the past with children." Americans think it is key to keep their children's dreams alive, they
encourage them at a young age to express how they feel and what they dream of for their future. Kids grow up used to the idea of sharing their stories
and create more meaningful connections with everyone they encounter. In Big Fish, Edward Bloom told his son stories growing up to show him that

a young educated prince, Hamlet, who comes home to his mother married to his uncle, in which he seeks to find the truth behind their relationship.
Based on his actions, Hamlet is in fact experiencing a psychotic breakdown, but it is resulting from his act of being crazy. The other characters have
noticed how Hamlet has changed since he has been back in Denmark and they attempt to analyze him. Horatio is the first to notice how Hamlet is
acting now, and he suspects that it is not all coming from Hamlet himself. After Hamlet's conversation with the Ghost, Hamlet plans to get thetruth of
his mother's marriage. Horatio "assumes" that there is "some horrible form" that is causing Hamlet to want to go to the extremes he is about to take
to find out the truth (I.iv.80). Of course, that horrible form Horatio was referencing was the Ghost, which was "[drawing Hamlet] into madness"
(I.iv.82). Horatio warns Hamlet to be careful in following the Ghost's advice because it could lead him to do something that he would not ordinarily
do. Hamlet's mother, the Queen, also believes that he is putting on a show. Hamlet is an emotional wreck because he has come back to Denmark
following his father's death and his mother is married to his uncle, his father's brother. Hamlet feels that their marriage is disrespectful because his
father had not been deceased long, and thinks his mother was moving off of emotion instead of logic. The Queen especially notices how Hamlet has
started acting toward Ophelia. Ophelia is deeply in love with Hamlet; however, he does nothing but mentally abuse her to push her away. The Queen
suspects that "Hamlet's wildness" is based off Ophelia's "good beauties" (III.i.43–44). The King also notices the new Hamlet and his actions toward
Ophelia, but he does not believe that he is acting. The King and Ophelia's father, Polonius, watch Hamlet and Ophelia interact. The King notices how
Hamlet does no vibe well with Ophelia, and he sees how it could come a problem quickly (III.i.176). The King believes that his actions were a result
of his "madness" (III.i.178).

Hamlet: Branagh's Ophelia and Showalter's Representing Ophelia
Ophelia falls to the floor, her screams contrasting eerily with the song pieces she uses as her speech. In an instant she is writhing and thrusting her
pelvis in such a gross sexual manner that it becomes clear that, in his film interpretation of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Kenneth Branagh wants to
imply a strong relationship between female insanity and female sexuality. Such a relationship is exactly what Elaine Showalter discusses in her essay ––
"Representing Ophelia: Women, Madness, and the Responsibilities ofFeminist Criticism" –– "I will be showing first of all the representational bonds
between female insanity and female sexuality" (Showalter 223). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such a deliberate choice by Branagh can be most easily seen by his representation of Ophelia in the "mad scene" (Hamlet 4.5) and Branagh's inclusion
and representation of Ophelia in scenes where she does not appear in the text. In fact, in contrast to past representations of Ophelia when some of her
lines were cut, Branagh actually gives his Ophelia more lines than Shakespeare does to better convey Branagh's own interpretation. One such instance
occurs when Branagh gives Ophelia a line that is, in the text, Guildenstern's: "A thing, my lord?" (Hamlet 4.2.28).
In the Branagh film, Ophelia first appears at the wedding of Claudius and Gertrude ( Hamlet 1.2). Dressed in bright red, with make–up on her face and
her hair done beautifully –– up off her face and curled –– Ophelia stands next to her father like a coy maiden: joyfully and dutifully applauding in
support of her brother, Laertes, when he obtains permission to leave for France, yet also looking worried about the "nighted color" of Hamlet. In fact,
at the ending of the wedding scene (1.2.129), Ophelia rushes up to comfort Hamlet; she extends her arm and looks as though she will embrace him
when Laertes grabs her and leads her off. There is no mention of such

A Story's Impact on Life in Tim Burton's Big Fish
A story is not only memorable because of its content, but also because of who told it, the way it was told, and the significance of the tale. The
stories we tell or hear are a vital part of life and this is evidently shown in Tim Burton's film, Big Fish. The film shows the true importance of stories
and the impacts they have on everyone. It follows the story of Edward Bloom, as he re–tells his past in unbelievable stories, and the life of his son
William, as he tries to deal with his father's questionable past. The movie shows the usefulness of stories in several ways; they are a person's legacy,
they allow us to momentarily escape reality, and they connect and intertwine people's lives.
To start off, stories are our legacy; what we leave behind when we are gone. They stay with the people we have influenced and keep us alive in their
memories. Through the stories we leave behind, we can remain immortal to those who know our tale. This rephrases what William had said near the
end of the film; "A man tells his stories so many times that he becomes the stories. They live on after him, and in that way he becomes immortal." The
stories that we tell are also comforting to those we depart from as it can help with the sadness to think about the life that person had once led.
Knowing that they had a good life, and being able to laugh at funny memories is a great way to deal with the emotional pain after losing someone. In
Big Fish, during the funeral of Edward Bloom, everyone was

4.1 Tim Burton's Gothic Fantasy: Representing the Victorian Culture through Animation and Parody
Film adaptations based on particular works such as Dickens's Great Expectations are not the only means through which we get a glimpse of Victorian
culture and society. Animated films such as Tim Burton's Corpse Bride (2005) represent theVictorian era through humor and exaggeration and reveal
Burton's awareness of 19th century English society. In his study Gothic Fantasy: The Films of Tim Burton, Edwin Page argues that Burton's films are
not realistic in nature, but like fairy tales they communicate through symbolic imagery, as they speak of "things far deeper within our conscious and
subconscious minds than most films would dare to delve" (7). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In chapter 1, I referred to the term "grotesque" as a means through which the figure of Miss Havisham is represented in Dickens's Great Expectations.
Here, the grotesque is the most important artistic mode that Burton uses in order to create an imaginary world loosely based in the Victorian era. As
Phillip Thomson explains, "the grotesque is a game with the absurd, in the sense that the grotesque artist plays, half laughingly half horrified, with the
deep absurdities of existence" (18). Moreover, the grotesque can take either the form of the terrifying or the comic, and therefore the artist is called to
abide by one of these subforms. In Burton's case the grotesque is visually expressed through "the burlesque and the vulgarly funny", the extravagant,
but at the same time he insists on keeping the uncanny and supernatural mood in his films (Thomson 20).
Corpse Bride (2005) is one of Burton's animated movies that is distinctively characterized by its dark humor; its purpose is not merely to assimilate the
Victorian reality through animation, but to parody and subvert it. If cinematic adaptation is a (re)interpretation of a narrative text as examined in
chapters 2 and 3, then animation is an equally powerful artistic mode that "should be seen as an art and a craft across multiple platforms and
disciplines, and the tool by which art, science, culture and the human condition has been imagined and re–imagined" (Hardstaff and Wells 184).
Animated films are

Portrayal of Ophelia in the two film versions of Hamlet
Hamlet is an acknowledging Shakespearean play that was later filmed in 1990 by Franco Zeffirelli and in 1996 by Kenneth Branagh. Both these
directors interpret the play differently adding unique twists and turns of their own to help focus on one thing than the other. In their contrasting films,
these two directors depict the character of Ophelia very differently. Through Zeffirelli's film, Ophelia, played byHelena Bonham Carter is portrayed as a
dreamy, naive, childish character, however in Branagh 's version; Kate Winslet portrays Ophelia as a more mature, sensible and strong willed
character. These different portrayals of Ophelia can be further analyzed through cinematography, set and costume designs and through the actor
themselves. Firstly, the different interpretation of Ophelia is shown through the cinematography of the two films. Cinematography refers to the
camera movement and angles. Zeffirelli chooses to make many of Ophelia's shots filmed from above, reinforcing Ophelia's character small helpless
and under control. Whereas in Branagh's most of the scenes of are front, eye level shots. These shots show Ophelia like anyone else in the movie.
Another difference in shots can be seen in the "mad scene" part, when Ophelia goes mad after the death of Polonius, her father. In Zeffirelli's film the
scene is the camera tends to follow Ophelia around showing

On the surface, a good number of films produced by Tim Burton prompt similar themes of dark satire and grisly outcomes. However, throughout the
progress of the film Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, I found my initial impressions of the typically grim director to be baseless and
skewed. From being introduced to songs like No Place Like London and my personal favorite, A Little Priest, to the surreal interpretation of lust, loss,
and revenge; Burton's establishes his take on mischief, malice, and meat pies through each individual scene and character development. Moreover, each
musical number complements not only the twist and turns of the plot, but also each character's respective personalities. The reinterpretation of what...

After returning to the place that gave him hurt, Sweeney Todd outs two scam artists, one of them named Adolfo, who are selling a potion to a cure
for hair loss and defeats them in a shaving competition. The song at this arc that stands out the most is The Contest, not because it is centered on this
scenario, but because the visionaries of the play and film adaption did an excellent job in portraying the times of penny dreadfuls. This is also where
we get to see a contrast between characters – Todd vs. Adolfo. Coincidentally, Adolfo had previously worked for Sweeney Todd and attempted to
blackmail him, but was eventually murdered by Todd.
Sweeney Todd's friend Anthony, the boy who accompanied him on the ship back to London, informs Todd of his plan to elope with Todd's daughter,
Johanna, which places him in direct competition with Judge Turpin for Johanna's hand in marriage. Judge Turpin finally finds his way into the
clutches of Sweeney Todd, but before Todd can exact his revenge, his friend Anthony reveals his plan to elope with Johanna. Judge Turpin storms out
and Sweeney Todd drives Anthony from the premises in a fit of rage. Sweeney Todd suddenly takes a mass murderous turn and decides that all people
deserve to die: the wealthy for their sins and corruption and the poor to be taken out of their misery. Thus ends the first act of the play.

Fight Club Analysis
"Fight Club" is infused with a deeper meaning then what the title presents. The fight between money and consumer goods is a battle between the fists.
Fight club makes us realise that we are immersed in a world of materialistic possessions which makes us less satisfied. These ideas that are presented
by Fincher is what makes "Fight club" a dark yet enlightening film. It's insanely genius, twisted and thrilling by David Fincher.
Edward Norton, the Narrator is an office worker at an automobile company who suffers from chronic insomnia. He is a consumerist slave who spends
time filling his condominium apartment with unnecessary IKEA goods. He relieves his insomnia by attending frequent support groups such as
testicular cancer and tuberculous to just name the few. Although the narrator doesn't have any of these conditions, he sees the support groups as a way
to expose his cancer; of feelings. This however is ruined when he meets a women called Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter) who also starts
attending these groups, who neither is a victim of any of these conditions. His life changes when he meet soap seller, Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) on a plane
coming back from a business trip. Tyler Durden seems to have it all: he is attractive, successful and a fearless leader, everything the narrator aspires to
be. The two men together create an underground fight club where men join to escape their mundane lives by living on the edge.

Film Review Of ' The Film ' Alice '
The film Alice in Wonderland was directed by Tim Burton and was based on Alice 's adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. It
starred Johnny Depp (The Mad Hatter), Anne Hathaway (The White Queen), Helena Bonham Carter (The Red Queen/Queen of Hearts), Crispin Clover
(The Knave of hearts), Matt Lucas (Tweedle–dee and Tweedle–dum) and Mia Wasikowska (Alice Kingsleigh). The music in this film was done by
Danny Elfman who frequently works with Tim Burton 's movies and the film was distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in 2010.The clip
that I will be analysing from Alice In wonderland is the Mad Hatter 's morning execution scene. In this clip the Mad Hatter is going to be executed by
order of the Red queen and it shows him and Cheshire cat talking in his cell when the feline appears. Then the execution happens and it is revealed that
Cheshire cat had impersonated the Mad Hatter to save him and to wear his hat.
Firstly, I will mention an extremely important contribution to this clip which is the costume and makeup as a part of mise en scene. The Mad Hatter
is the first example of how good the makeup and costumes in this film are and how they play a massive role to a characters depiction. The costume
and makeup of the Mad Hatter is very suitable as it shows how eccentric he is. I think it encompasses the fact that he is indeed mad and his big hat
shows how much he actually loves hats. His costume helps him suit his unusual surroundings throughout the

How Is Tim Burton An Auteur Style
In the early days, the French word "author" is also known as auteur. The Auteur Theory proposes that a film reflects the director's personal creative
force behind their films. It differs one director from the other, all giving out different creative ideas when making films. There are many directors
these days in the film industry. The one that has caught my attention and is still doing so will have to be Tim Burton. With his famous odd looking
glasses and multicolored lenses, Timothy Walter Burton better know as Tim Burton is a well known, and very much successful American film
director, producer, artist, writer and animator. He has a certain kind of consistency in his films, the kind that keeps up with his theme so to say. He is
well known for his dark, gothic and quirky fantasies which are often portrayed in his movies. His movies are usually very twisted and unexpected
which makes it all the more interesting. Growing up, Burton's parents had a very unsteady... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His work's style, genre and theme makes it iconic and an expressive form of who he is. Take Edward Scissorhands (1990) for example, who in the
right mind would have ever thought about a character like that? Not only how he appeared to be but also the characteristics that he portrayed as the
character. I feel that Tim Burton has come up with ideas that most people will think it makes no sense. He takes them and makes them as characters
in movies. Many of Burton's movies have similar distinctive characteristics and techniques, which can be shown in most or all of his productions. In
the past years, Burton has developed many films that are based on his own unique personal style, being recognized by the film industry as 'The Work
of Tim Burton'. (Rowe, 2013) It is safe to say that Tim Burton is indeed an auteur as people can instantly recognize his

Themes Of Big Fish
The 2003 film, Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton tells two stories. In the first story, told in the present tense, Will Bloom (Billy Crudup) is
attempting to reconnect with his dying father, Edward Bloom (Albert Finney). At the same time, Edward is recounting his journey in life in a series
of flashbacks. The story explores vast themes such as the reality versus fantasy, power of love and of imagination. The film begins at Will's wedding
which took place several years earlier. As Edward gives a lengthy speech about catching abig fish, the camera focuses on Will's increasingly angry
face. Not only has he heard this story many times before, but the story is all about Edward and his exploits, and not about him (Will) even though it
is his wedding day. Will confronts his father for selfishly taking all the attention on the day of his wedding and the two do not speak for three years
after that incident. The film setting then jumps to the present. Will (now a journalist) and his pregnant wife, Josephine, live in Paris when they
receive a call from Will's mother that Edward is stricken with cancer. In spite of the lack of communication with his father for the past three years,
Will quickly agrees to fly back home to Ashton, Alabama, and Josephine insists on coming along. True to form, Edward picks up exactly where he left
off at the wedding by regaling Josephine with the stories of his life, one more amazing and colorful than the next. While Josephine listens politely to

Tim Burton Style Analysis Essay
What makes a producer's style unique? How does a producer's style distinguish itself from others' styles? In Tim Burton's imaginative productions, Alice
in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, one is able to identify Burton's distinct style when peeling back the
layers of his films. Summarizing these films, in Alice in Wonderland, a young woman is transported to the mystical wonderland, where she must defeat
the forces of evil along with a journey of self–discovery. Next, in Edward Scissorhands, an unfinished project is discovered and integrated into the
everyday lives of people in a nearby suburban town. The film shows how Edward, an unfinished man, tries to live an ordinary life and make deal with

Altogether, Burton uses these unique lighting techniques in his films to show his vision of good, innocent, protagonists. In comparison, antagonists in
literary works are often associated with threat because they are seen as more powerful and strong, which Burton helps the viewer interpret though his
use of low angles. In contrast to the White Queen in Alice in Wonderland, theRed Queen is regarded as evil and cruel, impressing upon the viewer in
the scene where she ordered the execution of one of her frog servants because he ate her tarts that she is dominant over her subjects through oppression.
This cinematic element transfers the perception that the Red Queen is stronger and more potent than she is, and makes her appear larger than normal.
Similarly, low angles are used in Edward Scissorhands when Jim, an antagonist, is shown approaching Edward in a menacing manner. As Jim is being
shown through a low angle, one infers that Jim is a threat because of the power and strength the low angle gives him. Burton uses these unique camera
angles in his films particularly to show his darker, more threatening characters. The effect of the low angles that Burton portrays potential antagonists
contrasts with the effect of the front and back lighting that he uses to characterize his protagonists. The cinematic elements' effects often used in
Burton's films are always clearly transferred to the viewer and are impressionable, and the style in which Burton

Compare And Contrast Hamlet Movies
There are many important aspects to consider when making a movie, especially when one is being made after a famous play. Some of these aspects
include how they compare to Shakespeare's original play, costumes, setting and casting. This will be comparing 2 Hamlet movies, first one is directed
by Franco Zeffirelli in 1990 and the second is directed by Kenneth Branagh in 1996.
Both directors had different motivations and goals for each of their movies. This becomes very obvious when you compare each of the movies.
Kenneth Branagh had previously directed or starred in 3 other Shakespeare films before filming Hamlet (Keeping, Susan). While watching Branagh's
version it becomes apparent that he has a love for Shakespeare, it comes out mainly through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Starting off with casting in Zeffirelli's version Mel Gibson played Hamlet, Helena Bonham played Ophelia, Glenn Close played Gertrude and Alan
Bates played Claudius. In Branagh's version Kenneth Branagh played Hamlet, Kate Winslet played Ophelia, Julie Christie played Gertrude and
Derek Jacobi played Claudius. In my opinion Mel Gibson played the role of Hamlet better than Kenneth Branagh, I think this because Gibson
played the role of "insane Hamlet" better, this is because he was louder and more expressive compared to Branagh who was quiet and secretive.
Kenneth Branagh also looked too old to be playing Hamlet, he looked the same age as the King and Queen. For the role of Ophelia I believe
Bonham played her better due to her acting of "crazy Ophelia". In Branagh's version Kate Winslet was playing a very exaggerated version of
Ophelia going insane. It had the potential to be one of the best scenes in the movie, but it was very realistic. Costumes was a huge part of these
movies and help understand not only who they are, but their relationships with each other. In Zeffirelli's version it was much easier to make a
distinction between social classes. This is important because Laertes didn't want Ophelia to be with Hamlet, because she was a social class below
him. I did not understand this concept until watching Zeffirelli's version because in his movie it was extremely obvious Ophelia was a lower class
then Hamlet by the way they were dressed. In Zeffirelli's version Ophelia was dressed like a made in a torn up dress and in the other version Ophelia
was dressed elegantly, which was very similar to the Queen. Although in Branagh's movie the costumes match the atmosphere of the movie they do not
necessarily match the Shakespearean feel. The setting in Branagh's movie had more of a Victorian era atmosphere such as; the gold decoration,

This is a form of expressionism, of how Branagh has created this movie from the adaptation of a novel and managed to make it very powerful

The class structure of the film plays a big part in the story line, from Victor being at the top of the upper class scale then coming down to the
middle class such as the Nanny working for Victor's family and then ending right down towards the lower class, the poverty of the working people
in the town. Throughout the story Victor and the Monster are both shown to be outsiders. Victor began to get ideas in his head about being able to
create a new life, starting to hide himself in his lab for weeks on end studying and experimenting. He begins to lose touch with the outside world and
becomes extremely isolated. I think the Monster becomes alienated from the moment it is created. It breaks out of the lab, which is ironic as Victor
tries to lock himself in the lab, and roams the disease ridden streets. He is exposed in the town and the townspeople immediately try to rid him from
the town by chasing him and using physical violence towards the Monster. The Monster fleas the town, actually wanting to exclude himself from the
outside world because of the way he looks and

Corpse Bride Analysis
Corpse Bride is a beautiful movie about love, death, and sacrifices, in a classic Tim Burton style the movie is dark but with a gradual light. The
living world is portrayed as dull and nearly colorless but the land of the dead is a completely different situation because it is full of color and
excitement. Although this movie sounds like a horror film just by the title and the appearance of the cover art but it is the exact opposite. This movie
is very well written and played out, it may one of the most beautiful and touching animated love stories. Tim Burton is an excellent writer, animator,
director, artist, and producer known for his dark and gothic works so this movie does not fall short of any expectations. Many people compare Corpse
Bride to other Tim Burton movies because of its eerie vibes and uniqueness. (Member reviews for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride | Common Sense Media.).
It is a stop–motion film like a few other Tim Burton movies such as Nightmare before Christmas, Frankenweenie, and Coraline. The soundtrack is
phenomenal in regards to being mainly about marriage and death along with there being so much diversity between the two states of life. There are
also a couple elaborate dance numbers throughout that describe why everything must go according to plan with the wedding(s), how Emily the corpse

Hamlet's Love for Ophelia
In Hamlet, we are introduced to the complexities of a man who is struggling to murder his uncle while trying to understand his mother's motives. His
inner turmoil has left him emotionally unavailable and completely disenchanted with humanity in general.
Hamlet seems to be at his best when he is cruel which could reveal a deeper method for self–medication in which he hurts those he loves most –
especially his mother & Ophelia. However, while we can clearly discern his reasons for rejecting his mother, we are left with a sort of bitterness when
it comes to Ophelia. Why does he treat her so cruelly? Through the very text in which he scolds her, we can uncover some answers that reveal ... Show

However, in determining its importance, we must first define the word nunnery in order to decipher what it represents within the context of its usage.
A nunnery by definition is a haven where woman enter to become nuns. It can be measured as the purest form of sacrifice since the end is to serve
God. So, we could discern that to be in a nunnery would surely deliver us from any possible contamination with evil; because a nunnery represents a
place that is pure and virtuous.
From this definition, we might conclude that Hamlet is metaphorically attempting to deliver Ophelia from evil, that he sees her as a nunnery – pure –
virtuous! As if she represents all that is good with the world and he all that is corrupt and hopeless. So, while on the surface his words may seem
cruel and hateful, his intentions in this light are quite noble. It is a love that Hamlet would rather loose through alienation than to corrupt with his
association. Lastly, it is through his words "I must be cruel only to be kind" that we can correlate the relationship between his cruelty and his
justification in being so (4.1. 177). This statement only serves to reinforce the notion that his use of specific words (while harsh & crude at times)
along with a certain passionate madness – are meant

Film Review : The Movie ' The Film '
From time–to–time in Hollywood, there are films released that are labeled "ahead of their time." Sometimes, these films are recognized as soon as
they are released and praised. Other times, the films receive backlash until years later when they are recognized. Fight Club falls into the latter
category. When it was first released in theaters, critics responded negativity to the film, especially its intense violence. Today, the film is a cult classic
and one of the most quotable movies of all time. Despite the negative reviews, the film is a successful adaptation of the novel. Filmmakers Jim Uhl and
David Fincher make several effective choices that make the adaptation successful. These choices include casting effective actors, choosing great
locations, and capturing the intensity and violence of the novel. One reason that the film is successful is because the cast perfectly represents the
characters from the novel. Edward Norton is able to pull off every aspect of the complicated Narrator. The filmmaker's choice to include the
first–person narrations from the novel was a wise choice. At first, Norton seems like the average everyman with nothing interesting going on. His
voice in the narrations is dull and lets viewers understand his process of explaining facts and processes. As the film progresses, Norton also makes
viewers believe that he is a troubled man who is truly at odds with himself. This is evident in the scene when? he attacks himself while trying to threaten

Tim Burton Style Analysis Tim Burton is one of the most unusual and unique directors of our time. He brings characters to life by putting them in a
habitat they don't belong. His movies "Alice in Wonderland", "The Corpse Bride", "Charlie and the chocolate factory", and "Edward Scissorhands"
all demonstrate how one of a kind his movies are. Using cinematic techniques, Tim Burton points out the misfit character and shows how different they
are then everyone else. His use of camera angles, lighting, and sound give the viewers a different perspective on the movies, and help pick out the
individual character. In one of Tim Burton's popular films "Alice in Wonderland", high angles are used to show Alice falling down the rabbit hole.

The lighting in the two worlds were completely opposite of each other. The land of the living was low key making the scenes mysterious and gloomy.
The land of the dead was high key making the scenes more joyful and pleasant. Even though most of the music in this film was non–diegetic, the
sounds in the two different worlds were not the same. When Victor was with the other living people, the music was more creepy and disturbing.
When with the dead, the tone of it was more energetic and pleasurable. Putting Victor in the land of the dead is another example of how Tim Burton's
style is putting a character where they obviously do not belong. With Burton's wild imagination, he creates some of the most astonishing movies to
this day. Tim Burton produced "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" as well. Charlie Bucket was the misfit of the group because he was the only
normal child in the group chosen to enter the factory. When showing the children and where they were from, the lighting was high key, making the
scene more cheerful. But when showing Charlie's house, the lighting was low key. This made his family's house seem not as happy or welcoming. You
could also tell a difference in the condition of the family's house by the sound. When showing the town and the house the Bucket's lived in, there was
non–diegetic music playing that was frightening and disturbing. When showing the other children's homes and towns, the non–diegetic music was
more upbeat and jolly. The movie

Planet Of The Apes Film Analysis

  • 1. Planet Of The Apes Film Analysis Beginning a theme of taking older films and recreating them in his own style, 'Planet of the Apes' was based off Pierre Boulle's 1963 novel and a 1968 film version. The premise was about an American man that landed on a planet ruled by apes, which was released in 2001. Although the film has a rather shaky reputation, it forever changed Burton's life. While filming, actress Helena Bonham Carter, who was playing one of the lead characters, caught Tim's eye. The two would later start a professional relationship, with her starring in many of his films like Depp, as well as a personal relationship. Although they never married, they lived like had and they have two children together; Billy Raymond and Nell. However, the pair split in 2014, but are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Personally, I believe the reason is the same as to why so many people love him and his films. He's different, and in a very good, yet odd way. Nobody has really seen anything like what he has envisioned and brought to the table. Not only is he extremely unique, but he is also very relatable to anyone who has ever felt like an outsider or that they were weird or even rejected by the world. In this way, his audience can really connect with his films, even though they are out–of–this world imaginative. Honestly, Burton is my all–time favorite director, and for the same reasons as anyone else, I can identify with his art. "One person's craziness is another person's reality" he has said. Not all of his work is mind–blowing or even amazing, but you can't deny that when you watch one of his films you feel just a little bit transported to another world. He has transformed modern cinema with his 'Burtonesque' style and has also inspired many other directors, actors, artists, films, and shows. He's also given actors dozens of opportunities to start up and expand their careers. Maybe his films aren't everybody's 'cup of tea', but there's just no denying his glittering talent. It is inspiring to see someone come from such a rough beginning to come out on top, giving hope to many. Tim Burton has truly left his stamp on the world of film, as I believe to be one of history's best directors, and changed the world of cinema and art ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Theme Of Isolation In Frankenstein The film opens on the main character Victor Van Dort, the son of recently wealthy aristocrats, being forced to Victoria, daughter to a family of even wealthier aristocrats. (Russell) The Van Dorts are looking to raise their status in society through the marriage to the aristocrats, and the Everglots are hoping to further bury their secret bankruptcy and get their hands on the money they, wrongly, assume Victor's family has. At the very beginning, Victor is shown to be a very reserved, shy character when he is shown alone in his room drawing a butterfly while his parents sing excitedly about the upcoming wedding. This also emphasizes the drastic differing opinions about the wedding, and how Victor obviously dreads it. "This introduces the classic character of the old foolish woman through Victor's mother and gives the audience a silent look into the character of Victor. He is isolated at the beginning by his own will." (Drouillard). Isolated protagonists are used often in Gothic fiction as seen in another Victor, this one Frankenstein, who hides himself away to focus on work. Before the wedding, it's very obvious that Victor is nervous, and the parents are just as worried that he will not perform correctly at the ceremony. As he rehearses in the woods, Victor manages to properly say his vows, puts the wedding ring on a hand–like branch, and everything goes smoothly. Of course, in a fantasy, nothing truly goes as planned and the branch–like hand is revealed to be a real hand. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. King's Speech : The Role Of A King The role of a king, apart from his other responsibilities include – being calm and centered, being decisive and having personal integrity, being hard working and energetic, able to protect and maintain order, blessing others and acknowledging the efforts of other people, to search out and to reveal things, to teach those things and deliver his wisdom to his people, and to be well spoken and deliver speeches. Being "well spoken" has many different meanings to different cultures around the world, but as a king... one must be able to articulate words, have passion and purpose, have a good personality, be creative, have an expressive voice, and a sense of humor, have a decent wardrobe, and be a good story teller. Just having good posture isn't enough. When addressing the nation a king has a job of energizing his audience by any means necessary to help in the delivery of their message. Their main goal is to produce something special for their audience, or rather their "peoples". Convincing them that what they have to say is more important than anything they've heard and that it is different than all the rest of his predecessors. Kings create their own distinctive view of reality for an immense and diverse listening, and sometimes viewing, audience. In almost every situation a king speaks to the world. However; most of the time posture or facial expression were not even of importance to royalty in this era because they delivered speeches over radio waves. Memorization was not of ... • 4. Movie Analysis : ' The Corpse Bride ' Nothing will ever go according to plan. Tests are failed, people are changed, loves are lost. As is the case with Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride, following the story of an elegiac young man, the son of newly rich fishmongers. Victor Van Dort (Johnny Depp) is betrothed to Victoria Everglot (Emily Watson), the daughter of penniless aristocrats, to heighten both of their families, and despite his initial terror, he falls in love with her. Unfortunately, Victor has a horrible time at the rehearsal and cannot remember his vows, leading him off into the words where, while practicing, he inadvertently puts the wedding ring on the Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter), a young woman who was murdered on her wedding day for her parent 's money. Victor's adventures in the land of the dead tear him between his new wife and his intended bride, while teaching him more about himself and those around him. Throughout the film, the elegantly lifelike clay figures portray the lifelessness of the living juxtaposed with the liveliness of the dead in Victorian Europe. The motion picture starts with a close up shot of a desk and hands that open up an empty book. The screen then changes to a picture of a cartoon kid and dog in a picture frame and we are told that this is a Tim Burton production early on as this is likely to engage the audience as he is rather famous for strange excellent films. The camera then goes to a close up shot of a hand, picking up a feather pen from an ink pot. The audience ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Film Analysis : Movie Analysis Of The Fight Club Course Instructor Institution Date The Fight Club Movie Introduction The movie "Fight Club" is an American based film that was produced in 1999. The production was done after the release of a novel in 1996 by Chuck Palahniuk. The movie involved stars such as Edward Norton, Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter and David Fincher is the director. An overall analysis of the video shows that it is a very disturbing film in that it questions our conscience, our phobias, obsessions, reality as well as habits. Many individuals up to date presume that it is visually stimulating, insightful and at the same time provoking. In the movie, the "Narrator" suffers from insomnia and during his pursuit of trying to change his life, he meets a soap maker (Tyler) with whom together they open an underground fight club that evolves into something they never expected. The nameless narrator attends several support groups as a way of dealing with his insomniac state where he also meets a fellow fake attendee (Marla) and finally finds that his life is becoming quite more comfortable. Together with the two individuals, the form the soap making scheme and the fight club which later turns out to be a platform for competitive rivalry involving power and love. Finally, a surprise ending comes when the narrator's hidden agenda is exposed, and he eventually accepts the bitter truth that Tyler is not who he thought he was. • 6. The Film Hamlet By William Shakespeare The film Hamlet by William Shakespeare was made by two directors in two different versions which one was Kenneth Branagh and the other Franco Zeffirelli. By watching the four scenes of the play of the two versions, the viewer has come up to the conclusion that Kenneth Branagh's version best captures the essence of the play in terms of costume design, acting, directing, and cinematography. The directing and cinematography in Act IV, Scene V the Ophelia Madness Scene as well as the acting, costume design in Act V, Scene II the Final Scene showed that Branagh's version of the filmHamlet is the most effective. Branagh's use of directing in Act IV, Scene V in the Ophelia Madness Scene helped best to present the scene in a most effective way. Ophelia has gone mad due to her father's loss, people have been suspicious and disturbed by the death as well. Laertes who is Ophelia's sister has come back from France with a mob of commoners who they call Laertes "lord" and people say that Laertes shall become king. He enters the hall with an eager ready to avenge his father's death, Claudius the king tries to calm him down by acknowledging that Polonius is dead. The director in Branagh's version provided a padded cell for Ophelia where it shows that she really has gone insane and when she entered the hall, began singing about chaos, death, and unsatisfied love. The clothes she was wrapped in demonstrates an excellent illustration of her madness because when the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Style Analysis Of Tim Burton's 'Corpse Bride And Edward... Style Analysis Essay "We do not fear the unknown. We fear what we think about the unknown." Is a quote from Teal Swan. This idea is incorporated into a lot of director's movies, however Tim Burton, a creator of many famous movies, would probably have one of the best understandings of this idea. This is because Burton tends to use ideas about the unknown in many of his films. However, these ideas of fearing the unknown and curiosity of the unknown are especially prominent in Burton's films such as The Corpse Bride and Edward Scissorhands. Burton typically uses techniques such as some sort of misfit protagonist that is different than most people and a judgmental society that treats said protagonist in terrible ways to convey to the audience that society wrongly teaches people to fear the unknown. Burton typically has the misfit protagonist deemed an outcast by their society or the society they enter. For instance, in The Corpse Bride the protagonist, Victor Van Dort, is a sort of clumsy and, quite frankly, normal character. Yet despite how normal Victor is, his society, or more specifically, his parents and soon–to–be in–laws, expect him to be this perfect person and, inevitably, fails to do so at his wedding rehearsal, because of this he is deemed an outcast by his parents and soon–to–be in–laws. Eventually Victor runs away from his town and finds himself in an unknown place. Being in this place made Victor realize that he had no reason to fear the dead in the sort of ... • 8. Essay on Conscience of Queen Gertrude in Shakespeare's... The Conscience of the Queen William Shakespeare's play Hamlet is perhaps one of his most intriguing and scandalous pieces of work. One character who is liable for much of this excitement and outrage is Hamlet's mother, Queen Gertrude. To some readers and critics, Gertrude is conceived as an erratic, superficial and sensual woman. Others discern the Queen as an earnest, intellectual and sagacious woman whose tragic fault is her yearning for sexual satisfaction. Throughout the text, there are several legitimate arguments for both sides, but in the end, Hamlet seems to sum up the Queen's true persona with the words "Frailty, thy name is woman". Evidence of Gertrude's true nature can be found in many instances through out the play such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hamlet's conflict with Gertrude is a main part of this play. A few characters in this play give insight on Gertrude that point in the direction of her being shallow and evil. One example is late in the first act when Hamlet cries "O most pernicious woman! O villain, villain, smiling, dammed villain!" This is when, deep in thought, Hamlet realizes that his mother could have possibly taken part in his father's death and he thinks she's evil. In Hamlet's head, everything makes sense now because it is now understandable how she got over the death so quickly. This is the first time that Hamlet realizes his mother's true character. This is a very imperative notion about Gertrude's personality because for her very own son to think a validation like this is extreme. Often times a man will love and defend his mother until the day he dies, while Hamlet, on the other hand, is thinking of her playing a role in his father's death. When the ghost speaks of Gertrude's speedy marriage, it provides more evidence of her shallowness. The King's ghost says that she is "seeming virtuous". He is basically saying that while she looks holy and righteous, she isn't. The new King offered her something (or many things) that she wanted, and she took the bait and married him. She didn't care that her husband had just died, or how her son would react to this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Why Does A Movie Flop Films are both considered an art and a form of entertainment. To make such great films, you need an amazing director, wonderful cast and crew, and one hell of a budget. But then again if a movie has all of these then why do some films tend to just not make it into the box office charts. Why does a movie flop anyways? There are a lot of films that unfortunately just didn't make it and we will be stating a few examples of them in just a few but let me just enlighten you as to why these films tend to flop. One of the things that has to be considered is its competition. If your film is directed by an Academy Award director with an Academy Award winning cast, but the movie you are competing with did a great job at advertising their film especially on the social media, your film might not make it. There are a lot of great films (technically) that flopped not because it is an awful film but because the people just don't find it interesting enough. So here are some films that didn't quite make it into the box office charts, some might surprise you. #1 The Lone Ranger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So it was a big surprise when this Disney film didn't manage to make it through. Depp, alongside Armie Hammer and Helena Bonham Cart, stars in this western action film. According to critics, it didn't quite make because it was way too over–budget and it was completely unnecessary. It wouldn't be considered a flop if the budget is less than $375 million because that just meant that they need to make more than $600 million to be considered profitable for the studio. But unfortunately, the film only made $260.5 million, which still a lot for a film but obviously Disney didn't get enough money back, that is why it is considered as a ... • 10. Hamlet Soliloquy Analysis "To be or not to be", one of Shakespeare's most well known lines (3.1.64). In Act 3 of Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet begins a soliloquy with the famous line "To be or not to be." Throughout this scene, Hamlet contemplates suicide and whether or not life is worth all the suffering. While he initially views sleep as a solution, he realizes that with sleep comes dreams and that those dreams may be good or just as miserable as life. Later, he touches on the fear of the unknown and that the fear of death keeps people from taking their own lives. Following his soliloquy, he encounters Ophelia and she returns gifts to him. Hamlet is furious at his mother and already very depressed, so when Ophelia comes to return gifts Hamlet had given her, he views this is a form of rejection. This rejection compounded with the other issues Hamlet is dealing with, such as his father's murder and his mother marrying his uncle, intensifies his anger. He in turn tells her "Why woulst thou be a breeder of sinners? I am myself indifferent honest, but yet could accuse me of such things that it were better my mother had not borne me: I am very proud, revengeful, ambitious, with more offense at beck than I have thoughts to put them in, imagination to give them shape, or time to act them in. What should such fellows as I do crawling between earth and heaven?" (3.1.131–139). He argues that women should all grow up to be nuns and never have children, because children grow up to be corrupt adults. Also, Hamlet expresses his frustration when he mentions "I have heard of your paintings too, well enough. God hath given you one face and you make yourselves another. You jig and amble, and your wantonness your ignorance. Go to, I'll have no more on 't. It hath made me mad. I say we will have no more marriage" (3.1. 154–160). He believes women's beauty is a trick and if they did not marry, there would be less confusion. While he may be mad at Ophelia and blame her for making him believe he may have loved her, he is really more angry at his mother because he does not think she was loyal to King Hamlet. • 11. Eyes Wide Shut Analysis Stanley Kubrick, known for his critically acclaimed films, sent the world into a frenzy with the film he released right before his death. His last movie, Eyes Wide Shut, based on Traumnovelle (Dream Story), is a social commentary on the consumerist society we live in today and its relationship to the class system in place. It is important to note that the backdrop of the film is Christmastime in New York City. People who are familiar with Kubrick's films are aware that everything the camera passes is relevant to his overall message. Notorious for his perfectionism, it was not surprising to find he had, "sent a designer to New York to measure the exact width of the streets and the distance between newspaper vending machines," in order to reconstruct Greenwich Village in London, where they were filming (Nicholson 2017). The film took 15 months to complete, earning Kubrick the Guinness world record for longest continual film shoot. This time frame is more believable after learning he once made Tom Cruise shoot 95 takes of him walking through a door, Cruise even developed an ulcer working under Kubrick. However, all the extreme measures paid off. Even the background actors play an important role in the film. People are mulling around the streets of Greenwich Village running errands, living their lives, and enjoying the short lived holiday ambience. In almost every one of the shots in the film, there is a Christmas tree lit with rainbow lights affecting the clarity of the air. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Frankenstein as a Non-Epistolary Film Essay Frankenstein as a Non–Epistolary Film A novel written in the epistolary style is by nature difficult to adapt to film. The director, perhaps already adept at navigating the ragged breakers of length–contraction and visual style, is forced to deal with the additional sandbar presented by a plot format in which no visual action occurs and, more often than not, this difficulty consequently runs the film aground. Kenneth Branagh, in bringing Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to the screen as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, succinctly sidesteps this potential pitfall by completely discarding the epistolary format; rather than existing as a lengthy letter penned to Mrs. Saville, the plot is presented as an overheard conversation between Victor and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Continuing, Mrs. Saville is presented as incapable of understanding Walton's frigid trip: he supposes she shall not "understand this feeling" (Shelley 15), and that her surprise at discovering Victor "would have been boundless" (Shelley 22). Margaret is therefore illustrated as a woman unqualified to truly comprehend the extraordinary; although the text is primarily addressed to her, its subject matter, consisting of astonishing expeditions, fantastical scientific discoveries, and "blood congealed with horror" (Shelley 156), would be quite outside her domestic sphere of "a husband, and lovely children" (Shelley 157). As the novel is represented as the non–fictional writings of an arctic explorer, in order to find its way into print Mrs. Saville must edit and publish Walton's account; logically, Walton's framing letters to his sister are superfluous if he himself edited the story, as he more likely would have written his own travelogue detailing his expedition upon his return rather then printing personal letters. Given Mrs. Saville's inability to appreciate the fantastic elements within Walton's story, it is entirely possible that she, in editing the tale for print, altered any or all of Walton's, Victor's, and the Creature's accounts in some unknowable fashion before publishing them. The reader, realizing that a second party may have altered and thus contaminated the narratives, is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Analysis Of Edward Bloom And William Bloom Tim Burton presents Big Fish whereby, protagonist; Edward Bloom reveals exaggerated primitive memories of his past. Edward's past includes a series of events that are considered an ironic romance, as his life demonstrates how one's perspective can impact the portrayal of a story, in this case being one's past and how it is seen to be lived. Edward tells his tales multiple times, that he believed himself, is the true version of events, consequently frustrating his son William Bloom as, when William was young his father was scarcely around as work occupied majority of his time. Nonetheless, the tales presented by Edward give the audience an insight to what Edward went through from childhood through into adulthood. Edward Bloom and William Bloom, are two main characters, whose relationship is deemed to be the most unstable. It is clear that William's patients towards his father's stories, starts to wear thin; especially at Williams wedding, where William believes his father "tried to outdo him", indicating a false father figure, as a real father is highly likely to support their child and not try to take the spotlight away from their child. This craving for attention leaves the two in abandoned communication for a period of three years. The number three is significant as three contains beginning, middle and end. • 14. Magic Realism In The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World At its most basic level, magical realism is the mixture of the supernatural with realistic characteristics. This genre is known for having specific traits to help classify if a work of art is in the genre. One work of art that exemplifies almost all of these traits is "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World" by Gabriel GarcГa MГЎrquez. After a washed up corpse is found in a small village, the people of the city fall in love with the man's tallness and his handsomeness. They quickly decide to worship him and they want to better themselves because of him. On the other hand, one example of a misconception of magical realism is Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton. The central character, Edward Bloom, recounts his life with exaggerated stories to his son Will, who thinks the embellished tales are unnecessary and insulting. As his father is sick, Will travels to be with him. During his visit, Will gets a more in–depth view of his father's real life and the truth of what his life actually was. This film has some of the traits, but not enough to classify it as part of the magical realism genre. One crucial trait needed for magical realism is the idea of irreducible magic. This means magic that cannot be normalized or reduced throughout the work of art. Big Fish very clearly breaks this characteristic. In Edward's stories, he magnifies the sense of magic. When Ed passes away, Will discovers that all the magic Ed encountered throughout his life was relatively normal compared to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The Theme Of Madness In Hamlet And Shakespeare's Hamlet Shakespeare is known for the many reoccurring themes in his tragedies. One such theme is that of love causing madness. One prime example of this is Ophelia's downfall in Hamlet. Hamlet has been transformed into motion pictures any times, and two show the theme of madness in Ophelia in different ways: the 1990 version of Hamlet created by Zeffirelli and the 1996 version by Branagh. While both actresses that played Ophelia conveyed the madness well, they took different approaches in terms of vocal inflections and movements. The directors also took different approaches to portray madness like costumes and settings. Lastly, while Bonham–Carter's Ophelia in 1990 shows some ambiguity in the reasons behind her madness, Blanchett's Ophelia in 1996 does not. The major scene that shows the madness Ophelia has descended into is in act four scene five. The two portrayals by Helen Bonham– Carter and Kate Blanchett are quite different as shown by their acting of this scene. First, Bonham–Carter's movements appear much more calculated than Blanchett's movements, as Blanchett primarily lies on the ground trashing out in a random manner. Bonham–Carter, on the other hand, walks around the set with a purposeful stride (witchywoman4u12, 2011). Next, they also speak quite differently. Blanchett screams the majority of the speech and speaks with an inflection that speaks of unsureness. Bonham–Carter speaks with a calmer tone like she knows exactly what she is saying. Lastly, when Ophelia has interactions between herself and another character like her conversations with Gertrude and Claudius, Blanchett's Ophelia appears to be unaware of her surroundings and other people initiate the conversations (Aaron Bradford, 2013). Unlike the 1996 version, Bonham–Carter gets up close to people when she is talking to them, and initiates the conversations between herself and Claudius and Gertrude. This happens during Ophelia's lines, "Where is the beauteous majesty of Denmark...How should I your true love know From another one? By his cockle hat and staff, And his sandal shoon...Say you? nay, pray you, mark. Political Allegory In Alice In Wonderland One historical approach to Carroll's Alice in Wonderland invites the reader to observe the trends, culture as well as the philosophy of the Victorian Era for a personalized interpretation of Alice's encounters in Wonderland. Usage of the Historical approach may seem demoralizing in sheer scope; it is quite imperative to understand that the novel was written during a specific time period that, in itself, contained unique habits and concerns. Within the following pages, the connections with the Victorian era in terms of the middle class' upbringing of children, notions of order, reasoning, logic and politesse will be further understood. Political allegory, a powerful theme that reflects brilliantly in the real life to England; the Wonderland, the symbolic England, The novel can be first identified as the direct opposite with characters that jigsaw into the real life. Wonderland was ruled unjustly by the Queen of Hearts, who, correspondingly was Queen Victoria. There were pieces of evidence that Carroll was not overly timid by the Queen. The "aristocracy" of violence that was assigned to Wonderland (the Queen and the Duchess) as well as the ludicrous mangling of justice in the trial ("Sentence first, then verdict"; the British system indeed at that time in shambles.) are often used as the evidence that Alice belonged to perhaps the genre of political satire more than Carroll had realized. Another political approach is to treat Alice as an allegory for colonization. During the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By using outcast protagonists and strained family relationships, Tim Burton emphasizes that society is always going to look down on strangeness, but having a strong family relationship can help build confidence. Through the films Big Fish and Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton conveys how being an outcast can affect your future. In Big Fish, Edward Bloom decides to leave the town of Ashton with a giant, whom he befriended, named Karl. He then comes across 2 paths and decides to take the one that was much older and more run down than the other one. Finally, he discovers a town named Spectre, a place where nobody leaves because it is so perfect. Edward decides that he must leave because he doesn't fit in with everyone that is there. Before leaving Edward says, "Now there comes a point where a reasonable man will swallow his pride and admit that he has made a terrible mistake. The truth is, I was never a reasonable man." Leaving Spectre illustrated that Edward wasn't like normal people and it was made clear by just listening to his stories. Even his story telling made him abnormal in a sense because he was the only one telling these outrageous stories. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story." Rothfuss explains how storytelling is always a part of everyone. Stories are told in different ways, and those stories shape the person tremendously. Many of the stories told today are what shape the audience. In "The Things they Carried", by Tim O'Brien, and the film "Big Fish", directed by Tim Burton, stories are portrayed to be productive because the characters all have an American Dream and their stories help the characters achieve tasks to get to their American Dream. According to "Why Americans are Obsessed with Telling their Stories", by Ozy Qi Wang, "American parents regard parent –child bonding as the No.1 priority of personal storytelling: They encourage children to share their stories, pay great attention to and are sympathetic with children's thoughts and feelings, and create opportunities to re–experience the past with children." Americans think it is key to keep their children's dreams alive, they encourage them at a young age to express how they feel and what they dream of for their future. • 21. Character Analysis Of Hamlet William Shakespeare is one of the world's most renowned authors, who is especially known for his plays. One of his plays is Hamlet tells the story of a young educated prince, Hamlet, who comes home to his mother married to his uncle, in which he seeks to find the truth behind their relationship. Based on his actions, Hamlet is in fact experiencing a psychotic breakdown, but it is resulting from his act of being crazy. The other characters have noticed how Hamlet has changed since he has been back in Denmark and they attempt to analyze him. Horatio is the first to notice how Hamlet is acting now, and he suspects that it is not all coming from Hamlet himself. After Hamlet's conversation with the Ghost, Hamlet plans to get thetruth of his mother's marriage. Horatio "assumes" that there is "some horrible form" that is causing Hamlet to want to go to the extremes he is about to take to find out the truth (I.iv.80). Of course, that horrible form Horatio was referencing was the Ghost, which was "[drawing Hamlet] into madness" (I.iv.82). Horatio warns Hamlet to be careful in following the Ghost's advice because it could lead him to do something that he would not ordinarily do. Hamlet's mother, the Queen, also believes that he is putting on a show. Hamlet is an emotional wreck because he has come back to Denmark following his father's death and his mother is married to his uncle, his father's brother. Hamlet feels that their marriage is disrespectful because his father had not been deceased long, and thinks his mother was moving off of emotion instead of logic. The Queen especially notices how Hamlet has started acting toward Ophelia. Ophelia is deeply in love with Hamlet; however, he does nothing but mentally abuse her to push her away. The Queen suspects that "Hamlet's wildness" is based off Ophelia's "good beauties" (III.i.43–44). The King also notices the new Hamlet and his actions toward Ophelia, but he does not believe that he is acting. The King and Ophelia's father, Polonius, watch Hamlet and Ophelia interact. The King notices how Hamlet does no vibe well with Ophelia, and he sees how it could come a problem quickly (III.i.176). Hamlet: Branagh's Ophelia and Showalter's Representing Ophelia Ophelia falls to the floor, her screams contrasting eerily with the song pieces she uses as her speech. In an instant she is writhing and thrusting her pelvis in such a gross sexual manner that it becomes clear that, in his film interpretation of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Kenneth Branagh wants to imply a strong relationship between female insanity and female sexuality. Such a relationship is exactly what Elaine Showalter discusses in her essay –– "Representing Ophelia: Women, Madness, and the Responsibilities ofFeminist Criticism" –– "I will be showing first of all the representational bonds between female insanity and female sexuality" (Showalter 223). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such a deliberate choice by Branagh can be most easily seen by his representation of Ophelia in the "mad scene" (Hamlet 4.5) and Branagh's inclusion and representation of Ophelia in scenes where she does not appear in the text. In fact, in contrast to past representations of Ophelia when some of her lines were cut, Branagh actually gives his Ophelia more lines than Shakespeare does to better convey Branagh's own interpretation. One such instance occurs when Branagh gives Ophelia a line that is, in the text, Guildenstern's: "A thing, my lord?" (Hamlet 4.2.28). In the Branagh film, Ophelia first appears at the wedding of Claudius and Gertrude ( Hamlet 1.2). Dressed in bright red, with make–up on her face and her hair done beautifully –– up off her face and curled –– Ophelia stands next to her father like a coy maiden: joyfully and dutifully applauding in support of her brother, Laertes, when he obtains permission to leave for France, yet also looking worried about the "nighted color" of Hamlet. The stories we tell or hear are a vital part of life and this is evidently shown in Tim Burton's film, Big Fish. The film shows the true importance of stories and the impacts they have on everyone. It follows the story of Edward Bloom, as he re–tells his past in unbelievable stories, and the life of his son William, as he tries to deal with his father's questionable past. The movie shows the usefulness of stories in several ways; they are a person's legacy, they allow us to momentarily escape reality, and they connect and intertwine people's lives. To start off, stories are our legacy; what we leave behind when we are gone. They stay with the people we have influenced and keep us alive in their memories. Through the stories we leave behind, we can remain immortal to those who know our tale. This rephrases what William had said near the end of the film; "A man tells his stories so many times that he becomes the stories. They live on after him, and in that way he becomes immortal." The stories that we tell are also comforting to those we depart from as it can help with the sadness to think about the life that person had once led. Knowing that they had a good life, and being able to laugh at funny memories is a great way to deal with the emotional pain after losing someone. Animated films such as Tim Burton's Corpse Bride (2005) represent theVictorian era through humor and exaggeration and reveal Burton's awareness of 19th century English society. In his study Gothic Fantasy: The Films of Tim Burton, Edwin Page argues that Burton's films are not realistic in nature, but like fairy tales they communicate through symbolic imagery, as they speak of "things far deeper within our conscious and subconscious minds than most films would dare to delve" (7). As Phillip Thomson explains, "the grotesque is a game with the absurd, in the sense that the grotesque artist plays, half laughingly half horrified, with the deep absurdities of existence" (18). Moreover, the grotesque can take either the form of the terrifying or the comic, and therefore the artist is called to abide by one of these subforms. In Burton's case the grotesque is visually expressed through "the burlesque and the vulgarly funny", the extravagant, but at the same time he insists on keeping the uncanny and supernatural mood in his films (Thomson 20). Corpse Bride (2005) is one of Burton's animated movies that is distinctively characterized by its dark humor; its purpose is not merely to assimilate the Victorian reality through animation, but to parody and subvert it. If cinematic adaptation is a (re)interpretation of a narrative text as examined in chapters 2 and 3, then animation is an equally powerful artistic mode that "should be seen as an art and a craft across multiple platforms and disciplines, and the tool by which art, science, culture and the human condition has been imagined and re–imagined" (Hardstaff and Wells 184). Both these directors interpret the play differently adding unique twists and turns of their own to help focus on one thing than the other. In their contrasting films, these two directors depict the character of Ophelia very differently. Through Zeffirelli's film, Ophelia, played byHelena Bonham Carter is portrayed as a dreamy, naive, childish character, however in Branagh 's version; Kate Winslet portrays Ophelia as a more mature, sensible and strong willed character. These different portrayals of Ophelia can be further analyzed through cinematography, set and costume designs and through the actor themselves. Firstly, the different interpretation of Ophelia is shown through the cinematography of the two films. Cinematography refers to the camera movement and angles. Zeffirelli chooses to make many of Ophelia's shots filmed from above, reinforcing Ophelia's character small helpless and under control. Whereas in Branagh's most of the scenes of are front, eye level shots. These shots show Ophelia like anyone else in the movie. Not only how he appeared to be but also the characteristics that he portrayed as the character. I feel that Tim Burton has come up with ideas that most people will think it makes no sense. He takes them and makes them as characters in movies. Many of Burton's movies have similar distinctive characteristics and techniques, which can be shown in most or all of his productions. In the past years, Burton has developed many films that are based on his own unique personal style, being recognized by the film industry as 'The Work of Tim Burton'. (Rowe, 2013) It is safe to say that Tim Burton is indeed an auteur as people can instantly recognize his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Themes Of Big Fish The 2003 film, Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton tells two stories. In the first story, told in the present tense, Will Bloom (Billy Crudup) is attempting to reconnect with his dying father, Edward Bloom (Albert Finney). At the same time, Edward is recounting his journey in life in a series of flashbacks. The story explores vast themes such as the reality versus fantasy, power of love and of imagination. The film begins at Will's wedding which took place several years earlier. As Edward gives a lengthy speech about catching abig fish, the camera focuses on Will's increasingly angry face. Not only has he heard this story many times before, but the story is all about Edward and his exploits, and not about him (Will) even though it is his wedding day. Will confronts his father for selfishly taking all the attention on the day of his wedding and the two do not speak for three years after that incident. The film setting then jumps to the present. Will (now a journalist) and his pregnant wife, Josephine, live in Paris when they receive a call from Will's mother that Edward is stricken with cancer. In spite of the lack of communication with his father for the past three years, Will quickly agrees to fly back home to Ashton, Alabama, and Josephine insists on coming along. True to form, Edward picks up exactly where he left off at the wedding by regaling Josephine with the stories of his life, one more amazing and colorful than the next. While Josephine listens politely to these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Tim Burton Style Analysis Essay What makes a producer's style unique? How does a producer's style distinguish itself from others' styles? In Tim Burton's imaginative productions, Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, one is able to identify Burton's distinct style when peeling back the layers of his films. Summarizing these films, in Alice in Wonderland, a young woman is transported to the mystical wonderland, where she must defeat the forces of evil along with a journey of self–discovery. Next, in Edward Scissorhands, an unfinished project is discovered and integrated into the everyday lives of people in a nearby suburban town. The film shows how Edward, an unfinished man, tries to live an ordinary life and make deal with his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Altogether, Burton uses these unique lighting techniques in his films to show his vision of good, innocent, protagonists. In comparison, antagonists in literary works are often associated with threat because they are seen as more powerful and strong, which Burton helps the viewer interpret though his use of low angles. In contrast to the White Queen in Alice in Wonderland, theRed Queen is regarded as evil and cruel, impressing upon the viewer in the scene where she ordered the execution of one of her frog servants because he ate her tarts that she is dominant over her subjects through oppression. This cinematic element transfers the perception that the Red Queen is stronger and more potent than she is, and makes her appear larger than normal. Similarly, low angles are used in Edward Scissorhands when Jim, an antagonist, is shown approaching Edward in a menacing manner. As Jim is being shown through a low angle, one infers that Jim is a threat because of the power and strength the low angle gives him. Burton uses these unique camera angles in his films particularly to show his darker, more threatening characters. The effect of the low angles that Burton portrays potential antagonists contrasts with the effect of the front and back lighting that he uses to characterize his protagonists. The cinematic elements' effects often used in Burton's films are always clearly transferred to the viewer and are impressionable, and the style in which Burton ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Compare And Contrast Hamlet Movies There are many important aspects to consider when making a movie, especially when one is being made after a famous play. Some of these aspects include how they compare to Shakespeare's original play, costumes, setting and casting. This will be comparing 2 Hamlet movies, first one is directed by Franco Zeffirelli in 1990 and the second is directed by Kenneth Branagh in 1996. Both directors had different motivations and goals for each of their movies. This becomes very obvious when you compare each of the movies. Kenneth Branagh had previously directed or starred in 3 other Shakespeare films before filming Hamlet (Keeping, Susan). While watching Branagh's version it becomes apparent that he has a love for Shakespeare, it comes out mainly through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Starting off with casting in Zeffirelli's version Mel Gibson played Hamlet, Helena Bonham played Ophelia, Glenn Close played Gertrude and Alan Bates played Claudius. In Branagh's version Kenneth Branagh played Hamlet, Kate Winslet played Ophelia, Julie Christie played Gertrude and Derek Jacobi played Claudius. In my opinion Mel Gibson played the role of Hamlet better than Kenneth Branagh, I think this because Gibson played the role of "insane Hamlet" better, this is because he was louder and more expressive compared to Branagh who was quiet and secretive. Kenneth Branagh also looked too old to be playing Hamlet, he looked the same age as the King and Queen. For the role of Ophelia I believe Bonham played her better due to her acting of "crazy Ophelia". In Branagh's version Kate Winslet was playing a very exaggerated version of Ophelia going insane. It had the potential to be one of the best scenes in the movie, but it was very realistic. Costumes was a huge part of these movies and help understand not only who they are, but their relationships with each other. In Zeffirelli's version it was much easier to make a distinction between social classes. This is important because Laertes didn't want Ophelia to be with Hamlet, because she was a social class below him. I did not understand this concept until watching Zeffirelli's version because in his movie it was extremely obvious Ophelia was a lower class then Hamlet by the way they were dressed. In Zeffirelli's version Ophelia was dressed like a made in a torn up dress and in the other version Ophelia was dressed elegantly, which was very similar to the Queen. Although in Branagh's movie the costumes match the atmosphere of the movie they do not necessarily match the Shakespearean feel. The setting in Branagh's movie had more of a Victorian era atmosphere such as; the gold decoration, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Essay on Kenneth Branagh's Adaptation of Frankenstein for... Kenneth Branagh's Adaptation of Frankenstein for the Cinema The story of 'Frankenstein' has been set in the Georgian period. The story line can be cut briefly to a crazed scientist (Victor Frankenstein) thinking he can 'play God'. He tries to bring a creation to life and once succeeding he realises the terrible mistake he has made and sets about trying to correct it – by murdering it. The Monster sets out for revenge killing family members one by one, ending with them both dying in ice covered mountains. Kenneth Branagh has re–told this story from Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein. Branagh has been very careful when creating this movie, and because of it, the movie has said to be a movie that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a form of expressionism, of how Branagh has created this movie from the adaptation of a novel and managed to make it very powerful emotionally to the viewer. The class structure of the film plays a big part in the story line, from Victor being at the top of the upper class scale then coming down to the middle class such as the Nanny working for Victor's family and then ending right down towards the lower class, the poverty of the working people in the town. Throughout the story Victor and the Monster are both shown to be outsiders. Victor began to get ideas in his head about being able to create a new life, starting to hide himself in his lab for weeks on end studying and experimenting. He begins to lose touch with the outside world and becomes extremely isolated. I think the Monster becomes alienated from the moment it is created. It breaks out of the lab, which is ironic as Victor tries to lock himself in the lab, and roams the disease ridden streets. He is exposed in the town and the townspeople immediately try to rid him from the town by chasing him and using physical violence towards the Monster. The Monster fleas the town, actually wanting to exclude himself from the outside world because of the way he looks and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Corpse Bride Analysis Corpse Bride is a beautiful movie about love, death, and sacrifices, in a classic Tim Burton style the movie is dark but with a gradual light. The living world is portrayed as dull and nearly colorless but the land of the dead is a completely different situation because it is full of color and excitement. Although this movie sounds like a horror film just by the title and the appearance of the cover art but it is the exact opposite. This movie is very well written and played out, it may one of the most beautiful and touching animated love stories. Tim Burton is an excellent writer, animator, director, artist, and producer known for his dark and gothic works so this movie does not fall short of any expectations. Many people compare Corpse Bride to other Tim Burton movies because of its eerie vibes and uniqueness. (Member reviews for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride | Common Sense Media.). It is a stop–motion film like a few other Tim Burton movies such as Nightmare before Christmas, Frankenweenie, and Coraline. The soundtrack is phenomenal in regards to being mainly about marriage and death along with there being so much diversity between the two states of life. There are also a couple elaborate dance numbers throughout that describe why everything must go according to plan with the wedding(s), how Emily the corpse bride died, and about when new people arrive in the land of the dead. • 36. Hamlet's Love for Ophelia Essay Hamlet's Love for Ophelia In Hamlet, we are introduced to the complexities of a man who is struggling to murder his uncle while trying to understand his mother's motives. His inner turmoil has left him emotionally unavailable and completely disenchanted with humanity in general. Hamlet seems to be at his best when he is cruel which could reveal a deeper method for self–medication in which he hurts those he loves most – especially his mother & Ophelia. However, while we can clearly discern his reasons for rejecting his mother, we are left with a sort of bitterness when it comes to Ophelia. Why does he treat her so cruelly? Through the very text in which he scolds her, we can uncover some answers that reveal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, in determining its importance, we must first define the word nunnery in order to decipher what it represents within the context of its usage. A nunnery by definition is a haven where woman enter to become nuns. It can be measured as the purest form of sacrifice since the end is to serve God. So, we could discern that to be in a nunnery would surely deliver us from any possible contamination with evil; because a nunnery represents a place that is pure and virtuous. From this definition, we might conclude that Hamlet is metaphorically attempting to deliver Ophelia from evil, that he sees her as a nunnery – pure – virtuous! As if she represents all that is good with the world and he all that is corrupt and hopeless. So, while on the surface his words may seem cruel and hateful, his intentions in this light are quite noble. It is a love that Hamlet would rather loose through alienation than to corrupt with his association. Lastly, it is through his words "I must be cruel only to be kind" that we can correlate the relationship between his cruelty and his justification in being so (4.1. 177). This statement only serves to reinforce the notion that his use of specific words (while harsh & crude at times) along with a certain passionate madness – are meant ... • 37. Film Review : The Movie ' The Film ' From time–to–time in Hollywood, there are films released that are labeled "ahead of their time." Sometimes, these films are recognized as soon as they are released and praised. Other times, the films receive backlash until years later when they are recognized. Fight Club falls into the latter category. When it was first released in theaters, critics responded negativity to the film, especially its intense violence. Today, the film is a cult classic and one of the most quotable movies of all time. Despite the negative reviews, the film is a successful adaptation of the novel. Filmmakers Jim Uhl and David Fincher make several effective choices that make the adaptation successful. These choices include casting effective actors, choosing great locations, and capturing the intensity and violence of the novel. One reason that the film is successful is because the cast perfectly represents the characters from the novel. Edward Norton is able to pull off every aspect of the complicated Narrator. The filmmaker's choice to include the first–person narrations from the novel was a wise choice. At first, Norton seems like the average everyman with nothing interesting going on. His voice in the narrations is dull and lets viewers understand his process of explaining facts and processes. As the film progresses, Norton also makes viewers believe that he is a troubled man who is truly at odds with himself. This is evident in the scene when? he attacks himself while trying to threaten ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Psychological Disorders In Lewis Carroll's Alice In... "If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?"– Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland. Furthermore, a desire for one to bend the world as they see fit, even when what they see fit isn't meant to be. There are many ways to read the novel "Alice in Wonderland", it holds not one point of view, but many which can be interpreted in several ways. Analyzed from the critical viewpoint of physiological, readers may discover some interesting and remarkable surprises. The specific point I would like to discuss today are the physiological disorders this novel holds, such as the lunatic Red Queen who was wrapped whole with narcissistic behaviors and personality disorders, the unimaginable feeling of loneliness portrayed throughout Alice's adventure, and a dream anxiety disorder/psychosis or schizophrenia which represented itself as the actual story, viewed through the main character Alice. To begin with, there are many characters in Alice in Wonderland, who, despite the normality in their world, are rather odd; all whom which held a distinctive characteristic that revolved around all their actions, words, and surroundings. The Red Queen, who is described to have a very large head, portrays a character who is full of herself, hence the size of the head; she frequently tends to put herself in a position in which she is ... • 39. Essay on Tim Burton Style Analysis Tim Burton Style Analysis Tim Burton is one of the most unusual and unique directors of our time. He brings characters to life by putting them in a habitat they don't belong. His movies "Alice in Wonderland", "The Corpse Bride", "Charlie and the chocolate factory", and "Edward Scissorhands" all demonstrate how one of a kind his movies are. Using cinematic techniques, Tim Burton points out the misfit character and shows how different they are then everyone else. His use of camera angles, lighting, and sound give the viewers a different perspective on the movies, and help pick out the individual character. In one of Tim Burton's popular films "Alice in Wonderland", high angles are used to show Alice falling down the rabbit hole. Burton... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The lighting in the two worlds were completely opposite of each other. The land of the living was low key making the scenes mysterious and gloomy. The land of the dead was high key making the scenes more joyful and pleasant. Even though most of the music in this film was non–diegetic, the sounds in the two different worlds were not the same. When Victor was with the other living people, the music was more creepy and disturbing. When with the dead, the tone of it was more energetic and pleasurable. Putting Victor in the land of the dead is another example of how Tim Burton's style is putting a character where they obviously do not belong. With Burton's wild imagination, he creates some of the most astonishing movies to this day. Tim Burton produced "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" as well. Charlie Bucket was the misfit of the group because he was the only normal child in the group chosen to enter the factory. When showing the children and where they were from, the lighting was high key, making the scene more cheerful. But when showing Charlie's house, the lighting was low key. This made his family's house seem not as happy or welcoming. You could also tell a difference in the condition of the family's house by the sound. When showing the town and the house the Bucket's lived in, there was non–diegetic music playing that was frightening and disturbing. When showing the other children's homes and towns, the non–diegetic music was more upbeat and jolly. The movie ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
