2. His birth
● Joan Miró was born in Barcelona the 20 of April, 1893
● His parents, Miguel and Dolores, were disappointed
because they would have prefered a girl.
3. ● His father was Miquel Miró, son of a blacksmith, he made
a workshop in the near the Royal square in Barcelona.
● His mother was called Dolores Ferre, daughter of a
cabinetmaker.
● His wife was Pilar, together they had a daughter, they
called her Dolors.
● Joan y Pilar got married and they went to live near
Miguel´s workshop

can see different buildings located in the nearabouts of
his parents house. He considered it as one of his most
important first period paintings.

13. In 1975 Joan established his own foundation in Montjuic Park
(Barcelona). The building has been extended twice, once in
1987 and the other in 2001.
Miró created this foundation to guarantee that his paintings
would always be within the reach of people.
This foundation has become a key reference center on the
artist. It´s home to the largest collection of Miro´s works.

15. Miró and Picasso met in Paris, and it was just then when their
strong friendship started, in which the 12 years difference
between them wasn't an important issue. Their different
styles weren't a problem neither, and they became stronger
over the years, so people considered them a reason for a
great rivalry between the two friends.

Miró left Spain when the Civil
War started and settled in Paris.
During those years he designed
posters for the republican army
and participated in the Spanish
Republican Pavilion, in the
Universal Exhibition of Paris in
1937.
The dark and shocking influence
of the war is conveyed in that
period´s paintings.

In 1947 he made his first trip
to the United States where he
left important works: the great
mural at the Hilton Hotel, in
Cincinnati and, following that
same line, the mural at
Harvard University in 1950
He wanted to do a work that
communicated with the
general public.

Miró returned back to Spain in 1940 when
Hitler trops occupied Paris, and after living in
other places he finally settled in Palma de
Mallorca.
Since his returned to Spain he was one
referent of the youngests artists and he
started to be knew and recogniced
internationally.

● He was a bad student
● He was brave, but he was always very sick
● Tireless worker,introvert, early bird, observer, reader(He
read poetry and he had a library of 1700 books), .
● The house of his picture (la masía),was bought by a
north american poet, that he played dice, and lost it to a
friend of Miró.
● He created the logo of “La caixa”

At a certain moment, Miró manifested his desire to "kill the
painting". In reality, he intended to experiment with new
materials, supports and techniques, although he once took the
motto to practice almost literally.

● First exposure a total failure
On February 16, 1918, at the age of twenty-four, he
opened his first solo exhibition at the Dalmau Galleries
in Barcelona. There were no less than 64 works that
included landscapes, portraits and still lifes. The reviews
were not very complacent, and he did not sell a single
painting.
23. He imposed his definitive vocation after a retirement due to
illness.The family owned a farmhouse in Mont-roig, a town in
the Baix Camp region of Tarragona. There he retired at
nineteen to recover from typhoid fever. But, in addition to
breathing the healthy country air, he made the firm decision
not to dedicate himself to anything other than painting, with
the consequent displeasure of his parents.
He suffered a stroke from which he left with little mobility,
Miró died on December 25, 1983 in Palma de Mallorca
