• In pre- British time tribal
lived in forest region and
practiced hunting and
gathering with jhum.
• The British colonialist
interfered in the tribal
region to exploit the
natural resources .
• Hence the expansion of
British activities in forest
greatly disturbed the tribal
life.

4. TRIBAL CHIEF UNDER BRITISH
RULE…
• The tribal chiefs, who enjoyed power ,lost their position with
coming of British
• They lost most of their administrative power, and were allowed
only to keep some land titles.
5. • The British banned shifting of cultivation
• They introduced new revenue policies and growing of cash crops which
broke the self sufficiency of tribal
• The tribal being exploited by the moneylenders were reduced to the
position of landless labourers
• Due to the introduction of forest policy which placed restriction on
tribal and hence they lost their freedom to use forest land .
• Due to the harsh measures of British towards the tribal community their
social and economic condition was adversely affected.

Munda
7. They revolted against the British development plans which
would evict them from their homes
A rebellion broke out in 1855-57 headed by four brothers
Sidu,Kanhu,Chand and Bhairav of Bhagnadihi.
However the Santhal rebellion was brutally crushed by the
British troops.
8. • The munda rebellion was
led by great leader called
Birsa Munda.
• He united the mundas and
waged long struggle
against the British policies.
• The main rebellion took
place in 1899-1900
• The main aim was to dove
off the British and establish
the Munda raj.
