2. 1. Mathematics reveals hidden patterns that helps us
to understand the world around us.
2. Mathematics is the subject which provides an
opportunity for the training of the mind to close
thinking, stirring up a sleeping and unstructured
spirit. Its nature can be made explicit by analysing
the chief characteristics of mathematics:
3. A study of patterns and orders: Mathematics is a
study of patterns and order dealing with numbers,
geometric objects, forms, algorithms and change
etc.
4. Mathematics as language: Mathematics has its
own language & symbols that cuts short the
lengthy statements and puts them briefly,
accurately exact form. This language must be
acquired just like any other language to have a
better understanding of subject and its concepts.
Also certain ideas and concepts can be clearly
illustrated only by creation and the use of symbol.
For example pi, 𝝅 .
3. ● Mathematics is the tool that is specially suited for
abstract concept of any kind. Mathematics involves
conversion of abstract concepts into concrete form.
● Mathematics helps in solving problems of our day to
day life.
● Mathematics provides opportunity for the intellectual
gymnastic of man’s inherent powers. It’s like an
intellectual game with its own rules and abstract
concepts, with this perspective mathematics can be
viewed as a matter of puzzles, paradox and problem
solving- a sort of healthy mental exercise.
● Mathematics has a number of characteristics e.g.
accuracy, certainty of results, originality, exactness. In
mathematics the results are either right or wrong. There
is no midway possible between right or wrong.
● Mathematics is an exact science which involves high
cognitive abilities and powers.
● According to Courant, “mathematics as an expression of
human mind reflects the active will, the contemplative
reason and the desire for aesthetic perfection. Its basic
elements are logic and intuition, analysis and
construction, generality and individuality.”
