2. Khilafat Movement
(1919-1924)
Initiated by two Ali brothers:
• Muhammad ali jauhar
• Shaukat ali jauhar
World War I (end in 1918)
• Turkey defeated.
• British rulers wanted to redraw the boundary of
turkey.
• Turkey caliph was the head (khalifa) of all the
Muslims of the world.
3. Response:
Muslims were angry and tried to protect
Ottoman Empire.
Objectives:
oTurkish caliph_ should be retained.
oHoly places_ of the Muslims should be protected.

5. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
• Turkish army officer.
• Abolish the Ottoman Empire.
• Introduced the “republic of turkey”.
• He became the first president of it.
End of Khilafat Movement :
• Turks themselves abolished the khilafat.
• Consequently the khilafat movement in
India also came to an end.
6. Simon Commission
(1927)
After the name of Sir John Simon.
Group of seven British members has been
sent to look into the political situation of
India and suggest reforms.
It was found that:
• The committee included only British
members and no Indian.
• Indians were not allowed to vote also.
7. They were greeted with the black flags and
slogans like:
‘Simon go back’
They went back after a month.
