○ The idea of Sughar emerged in 2009. Sughar (meaning “skilled
and confident woman” in Urdu).
○ Belonging to Balochistan province of Pakistan, Khalida has lived
her life surrounded by beautiful balochi tradition and rich culture.
But apart from the beauty, she has also witnessed the harshness
of cultural restrictions on rural women and the domestic violence
on them.
○ Khalida, through her initiatives have fought against such customs
from the age of 16.
○ In early 2009, she has involved in campaigning against Honor
Killings, child marriages and exchange marriages through
advocacy and publicly shaming tribal leaders. This led to a huge
backlash from the local communities in Balochistan and they
were start creating problems for her.
○ But then she came up with a new idea and instead of shaming her
tribal leaders publicly, she decided to preserve beautiful tribal
culture by educating and empowering rural women of her village.

○ What it does?
○ Sughar Foundation, a non-profit organization
dedicated to providing
 Enterprise training and life skills.
 Encourage community language and education.
 Promote traditional balochi embroidery.
 Grant resources to launch and sustain women-
owned businesses to rural women in Pakistan.
○ Khalida beleived that all women in Pakistan are
“sughar,” they only need opportunity to unleash
that potential within themselves.
○ In 2014, she registered Sughar Foundation in
United States.
