The Effect Of Study Groups On Academic Achievement
The Effect of Study Groups on Academic Achievement
There are many people who attend college to obtain a higher education and increase their earning
potential. While attending college, there are many scholarships and academic opportunities
presented to students that are dependent upon their grade point average. Academic achievement is
an important aspect of a college student's academic career. Many college students spend their
academic career searching for the best methods to assist them in obtaining a satisfactory GPA. There
are many ways a student could study for their courses, but which method leads them to their end
goal?
A study conducted by Asikainen, Parpala, Virtanen, & Lindblom–Ylänne (2013) focused on a
student's approach to learning in connection with their academic achievement. They found that
students, who approached learning with motivation and interest in increasing their knowledge, were
academically successful in their course when given understanding–based exams. Not only is
motivation and interest a factor in academic achievement, but Billings (1994) conducted a study that
focused on a student's learning style preference, whether individual or group study, and its impact on
their attitude and academic achievement. Their research found that the students who participated in
study groups were more comfortable with the computer instruction methods than those who studied
independently. The findings suggest that peer interaction supports the students when

Academic Achievement Is Definition
Academic achievement encourages the students to work hard and learns more. It is the status or
level of the person's learning and his ability to apply what he has learnt. It refers to the knowledge
attained and skills developed in the school subjects who are assessed by school authorities with the
help of achievement test which may be standardized or non–standardized. It also helps the teacher to
know whether their teaching was effective or not and therefore helps them according to bring
improvement. Academic achievement determines the student's status in the class. It gives children
an opportunity to develop their talents, improve their grades and prepare for the future academic
challenges. Academic achievement means knowledge, understanding

The Achievement Gap And Academic Growth
The achievement gap in students traditionally is determined through test scores or other
measurements that are defined through some sort of measurable academic achievement. Educators
hammer down test taking strategies to students in preparation for end of course stage mandated
assessment that when it is all said and done the students are tired of the test before it is even
administered. Student achievement should be measured based on student growth and academic
growth should not be the only thing educators should emphasize during the school year. Students
need to character growth is a way to decrease the achievement gap and if the student improves their
character then the achievement gap will be decreased through building students up from the inside
out.
If we are trying to decrease the achievement gap for diverse learners it has to be done in a way that
is not singling students from diverse backgrounds as defined by society today. We have to
understand that all schools are truly diverse because all students and families are unique and instead
of creating lessons and programs for members of the school community that are considered diverse
by today's societal norms, we should have lessons that embrace what all people have in common.
Lessons and programs need to be constructed with the understanding that people are at different
places in terms of becoming ready to accept the true diversity of our world. Through the Hollister
High School Character Education Program,

Academic Achievement And Functional Performance
As I have reviewed the information about Ana, it can be understood that she has areas of weaknesses
and strengths, and often does not want to attend school for various reasons. It is through the
presentation and implementation of the Present Level of Academic Achievement and Functional
Performance that measurable goals, and other helpful skills can be identified and carried out to help
better her educational journey.
From the area of classroom teacher input, of the case study information, some of Ana's strengths are
being able to write complete sentences, being able to independently a read a seventh grade text with
a comprehension of 80%, and reading 40WPM correctly at grade level.

While many know that home is the foundation and can be helpful to the educational process, Ana
doesn't come from a strong home. She has limited contact with her father, and her mother became
pregnant while in high school, and aside from graduating from high school she had to obtain her
GED. Now, her mother is working full–time to support her and her daughter. While mom has to
provide, if there is no one to be there with Ana after school hours this can be dangerous because
there is no one to push her to complete any school work, to study, or to do other necessary things to
be academically successful.
However, as I read closely, I inferred that there were others inside Ana's family, besides her mother,
whom were not successful in their educational journey due to the statement from the background
information within the case as it states, "Her mother wants Ana to finish school, as he wants her to
be different from other family members." To some, that can be a clear indication that at this point in
Ana's educational journey her mother has started to notice of the her past traits, as well as other
family members actions that lead them to obtaining a GED or possibly even dropping out.
However, from the reading, it appears that she a great connection with her teachers, and maybe with
the help of her teacher, and a guidance counselor, along with other perspective individuals, they can
pair her with a peer–buddy. Someone who will sit with her at

Academic Achievement Research Paper
Walking across the stage dressed in my cap and gown, and receiving my Bachelors
Degree was one of the proudest moments I have experienced in my 32 years! Though obtaining a
college degree is an enormous accomplishment for anyone, I feel the struggles I endured along the
way made my success even greater! Looking back, I realized the life struggles I weathered only
made the college struggles easier to overcome.
I was a single mom with three amazing children and had a full–time career. Fitting college into my
schedule seemed nearly impossible. Fortunately, I knew it was necessary if I wanted to be an
example to my children. My goal was to achieve my degree while teaching my children that a

I graduated from high school, was married, and had three children before I was 24 years old.
I wanted to break the cycle with my children. I did not want my children following in my footsteps.
I felt I could not preach to my children unless I did what I expected them to do. I wanted to show
them two perspectives of my struggles. I wanted them to see their mom work hard to achieve a goal
without giving up. I also wanted them to see the extra struggles I encountered because of not being a
traditional college student straight out of high school.

I could see my children's faces light up with pride during my graduation ceremony. They knew they
were the rocks that motivated me through school. After all, I began that journey for them! Upon

Academic Achievement Program have prepared me to have a successful 2015–2016 academic year.
Five weeks ago when I came here for the summer program, I thought I was well prepared but
obviously I was wrong because I have improved so much since then. I can say that I am prepared
but setting SMART goals for the nest academic year will be very important. My personal action plan
is to make sure I accomplish all my smart goals. As we are going to become a successful member of

First Aid Kit and check in with health center at least once a month for the rest of the year and when I
feel bad for the this school year. I developed this goal because I hate getting sick and I heard that
many students get sick easily with many people around. Professional goals are very important
because they set your future up. The more I get connected professionally, the easier my time will go
here at the University of Maryland. My other goal is to get the connections with a professor this
coming school year. Connection with the professor and other authority figures is really important for
me because it will help my final and most important goal. For my final goal, I want to maintain a 3.0

Education And Academic Achievement Gap
Anna, a young first grader, squeals with delight as the whistle blows to announce the end of recess.
What may seem as a sad end to the best part of the day for most students fills Anna with complete
joy. Why? Anna is on the way to her favorite class–music. Anna enjoys it because she likes to sing,
but what she does not know is that the class that she enjoys the most is also extremely beneficial to
her academic and social life. Sadly, for many students, art classes are not commonly offered due to
cost or the perception that art education is unimportant. Although seen as less important than core
subjects, art education should be a part of basic curriculum because of its academic and social
benefits for students. Many people believe that schools should focus on excelling on standardized
testing, such as state tests and college entrance exams, and lowering the academic achievement gap.
After all, these examinations are major factors in students' future decisions and schools' academic
success greatly affects their overall achievement. Focusing on standardized testing is important;
however, basic courses–such as English, mathematics, and science–are not the only subjects that are
beneficial when preparing for these tests. In a study prepared by the President's Committee on the
Arts and Humanities (PCAH), arts integration–focused schools were followed over a three–year
timespan and it was found that they had reduced the reading gap by fourteen percent and the
mathematics gap

Degree of School Readiness in Kindergarten Students from Families with a Stay–at–Home–Mom
vs. Families with a Working Mom
Rebecca L. Mullins
University of Texas at Tyler
July 2016
While all forms of parental involvement in a child's education are recognized for their individual
importance and merit, for the purposes of this study, we are particularly interested in parental
involvement as it relates to academic achievement and school readiness of first time Kindergarten
students. We acknowledge that despite empirical evidence substantiating parental involvement as the
primary predictor of school readiness and academic achievement, other variables come into play
such as socio–economic status, family structure (i.e. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Can mothers truly have the best of both worlds? And can we assume that if parental involvement is
the key factor in a child being school ready, can we also assume that a working mom just won't offer
her children the same number of quality early experiences as that of a stay–at–home mom? These
are just a few of the questions surrounding this topic, and we attempt to answer some of them in this
study. However, we must first explore the research that speaks to the imperative role of parental
involvement and its direct relationship to academic achievement and school readiness in children,
namely children entering Kindergarten for the first time.
A considerable body of literature exists to support the theory that parental involvement in children's
education during pre–Kindergarten years has a direct, positive impact on childhood development
and academic achievement. (El Nokali, Bachman, & Votruba–Drzal, 2010; Fan & Chen, 2001; Hill
& Chao, 2009; & Seginer, 2006). Parental involvement in a child's early education can take many
shapes and forms including one or all of the following: parental attitudes toward education, parental
behaviors to prepare children for school experiences, educational expectations of parents, etc.
(Seginer, 2006). In the industries of pediatrics and education, we often hear the child's brain referred
to as a "sponge". This is because 90% of a child's brain is developed before the age of

How eating habits affect academic achievement
The article researched the correlation of healthy eating and physical activity and academic
achievement. They also look at how parent's education affects children's test scores. The study was
conducted in Australia and they used the same test to test all students. Parents also had to fill out a
questionnaire sheet prior to the start of the experiment about their children. There were a fairly even
number of males and females in the experiment ranging from grades 3,5,7 and 9. There were many
studies done and the majority showed that physical activity had a positive impact on higher
academic achievement. The experiment was conducted on fruit and vegetable intake, breakfast,
sugary drinks and consumption of takeaway. The article went into great detail of the different age
groups and the affects eating habits have on the children. It also touches on the socioeconomic status
of the child's household and the impact that holds as well. The healthier children are outside of
school the better they perform in school.
The study showed that parent's academic level had an impact on the child's learning as well. The
higher education level the parents had the better the children did on their test. In the same study,
they showed that women performed significantly higher in English and men scored higher in math.
Although in this part of the study they did not have any children

Academic Honesty: Meaning and Achievement
Academic Honesty: Meaning and Achievement Introduction There are several areas where academic
honesty plays a role. These can include plagiarism, cheating, professional misconduct, and
deception, among others. Most people think of the first two, but they may not consider the others
because they do not realize how significant the problems can be or how many people might engage
in dishonest behaviors when it comes to academics. In order to maintain academic honesty, people
who are involved in the academic world in any capacity must carefully consider what they are doing
and whether they are correctly citing and acknowledging what is being done by others, among other
things. It is possible for a person to be academically dishonest by accident, mostly because he or she
did not realize that he or she was doing something that was dishonest. Some people certainly do
things like that deliberately, but others are unclear on the rules – and that can lead them to make
mistakes that they would not have made had they known. In the end, it does not really matter why
academic dishonesty takes place. What matters is that it should be avoided. People who are not clear
on all academic rules that may apply to them need to get clarification before they undertake any
kind of academic project. If they fail to do this, they can be held responsible for something they do
wrong, even if they do not "mean to" do something that is not completely honest. Academic honest
is not complicated, but it

one award that stands out from all the others is the award that I won in my eighth grade year, The

The Importance Of Academic Achievement And Race
Being a racially ambiguous Hispanic woman who has dreams of a better life has not been the
smoothest ride. Two issues that have ridden with me throughout my life are academic achievement
and race. I am here chasing after education achievement while race is tailgating me. I try to reach
education and let it lead me to different views and find more information about the world. However,
by reaching education it has had me leave behind some of my cultural roots and personal connection
with my parents. My race has shaped my perspective and background however, I never let it stop me
or get ahead of me. Both academic achievement and race have led me to ups and downs shaping
who am I and who I will become.
Growing up in the United States and getting an education always caused a sort of dissociation
between my undereducated parents and my intellectually ambitious self. My parents grew up in El
Salvador and there was not much to be offered there in terms of education and intellectual pursuit.
Education was not put on a high pedestal for my parents. In fact, my parents never did pressure me
to academically succeed. I have been the one to challenge myself. I am a "scholarship boy" or
perhaps a better fit would be "scholarship girl." Richard Rodriguez in his essay, "The Achievement
of Desire", discusses the clash he had with his undereducated parents. He describes the dilemma of
the "scholarship boy" as he states, "He permits himself embarrassment at their lack of education.

What Are The Factors That Affect Academic Achievement
Many people wonder about the factors that play a vital role in the Academic Achievement of a
Person, come to think of it there are quite a few factors that are essential for an academically
successful life, they can be Parental Influence, Student motivation, Peer Effect, the geographical
location or health, all of the above–mentioned factors can be crucial in a student academic life, but
we may say that Parental Influence and Student Motivation are the most important ones.
Adolescence is the time in which a child is going through the period of growth, this is the time when
parental influence is all that matters because whatever the child sees or hears is going to shape his
way of thinking, continuous support from parents play a pivotal role in academic achievement.
Student Motivation can be categorized as the second most important factor in the academic
achievement of a child, without motivation no one has ever been able to do anything that really
matters because motivation in a person arises when the person really wants to do something to
achieve something that matters, be excellent in academics. Let's talk about the influence of parents
on the academic achievement of a child. Come to think of it parents can either provide the child with
a positive influence or a negative influence, it solely depends on the parents. Some studies show that
students spend a small portion of time in schools, while there may be no doubt that school is the
most important provider

Factors Affecting Academic Achievement
CHAPTER ONE Introduction Nationwide, no education issue has received more attention with the
least progress yet than closing the academic achievement and attainment gaps for minorities. Over
the course of time, educational social theorists have increasingly focused on cultural and
socioeconomic factors to explain the existing differences in academic achievement among students
(Pishghadam & Zabihi, 2011). It is through these cultural experiences, which are widely influenced
by cultural and socioeconomic factors, that students attain a certain degree of cultural and social
capital that serve as a predictor of their academic success (S. Kim & H. Kim, 2009). Along with
cultural and social capital, self–efficacy is also a predictor for students' academic success because it
is an indicator of motivation and perseverance to reach a goal (Bandura, Barbaranelli, Caprara, &
Pastorelli, 2001). Of course we know, motivation plays a pivotal role in helping students surpass the
obstacles they face. As if the factors affecting the academic achievement and attainment gap were
not enough, students in light of self–preservation when seeking approval of significant family
members and teachers engage in greater use of self–handicapping (Leondari & Gonida, 2007).
Unfortunately, many of these obstacles students face is the result of cultural and socioeconomic
factors and therefore beyond their control. The proposed study is designed to increase understanding
of the cultural and socioeconomic

Academic Achievement And Advancement For Students
Educators and school administrators have the largest responsibility of promoting academic
achievement and advancement for all students, regardless of their cultural background. Throughout
the United States, schools enroll students with different academic levels and cultural backgrounds.
As of 2011, African American children embodied 16% of the public school population in the United
States and Muslim children, less than 3% (National Center for Education Statistics). Keeping this in
mind, students from cultural minorities can be at risk of academic failure due to the environment
they are raised in. As schools educate such a vast array of students, it is crucial that educators and
support staff be competent in working with a diverse group of students. School counselors,
personnel, and educators need to be able to collaborate with students in helping them reach their
potential in academics, social skills, future planning, as well as mental health concerns (NCES,
2009). It is imperative that school counselors are informed and understand the cultural values and
beliefs of minority groups in order to help students achieve academic and personal success.
Discussion
Schools within the United States are progressively becoming more culturally diverse. Because of
this, it is critical that educators and school personnel are aware of the difficulties and types of
support individual students from diverse cultural backgrounds may need. Research has shown that
minority groups are

Academic Achievement Of Graduate Education
Many undergraduate nursing programs aim to fulfill many pathways into the nursing career while
inspiring early achievement of graduate education. The undergraduate programs share multiple
commonalities, the differences are visible in the structure of the courses structure and the contents
(Billings & Halstead, 2016, p. 135). The first curriculum model of training created in the late
nineteenth and early to mid–twentieth centuries was the Diploma programs. At first the program was
associated with hospitals and higher educational institutions, with the goal of training nurses in
clinical skills to deliver patient care in many health care environment over a period of three years.
The program mainly consisted of general education courses in the biological and social sciences
which was facilitated through association with a local college or university. Students were able to
transfer their credits to a baccalaureate degree in nursing to further their education. The continuing
progress of undergraduate program into colleges and universities has cause the decrease in diploma
schools and has contributed to 10% of nursing programs educating students in the United States.
The existence of ASN or associate degree in nursing (ADN) programs were initiated in 1952 by
Mildred Montag in reaction to nursing shortages and to produce nurses in two years to provide care
to patients with guidance of professional nurse in acute care environment (Billings & Halstead,
2016, p.135).

Socioeconomic Status And Academic Achievement
Socioeconomic status has long been thought to correlate with a student's academic achievement;
numerous studies and research have been conducted in order to analyze this topic. Socioeconomic
status (SES) is mostly defined by scientists as an individual's income, occupation, education, and
prestige in society. These elements often go together, so SES is frequently measured as a
combination of an individual's income and years of education because these are most easily
quantified (Slavin, Robert E. pp. 71.) It has often been discussed by researchers, the correlation
between SES and academic achievement, however, this study, by the Department of Psychology of
the University of Minnesota, addresses the degree to which SES can be considered an environmental
influence on academic achievement. In a previous meta–analysis, Dr. Karl R. White, from Utah
State University, found that when measured at the individual level, the correlation between SES and
academic achievement was low. While measured at a larger level, for example through the school or
neighborhood, the correlation was found to be higher (Johnson, Wendy, et al. pp.1) This begs the
question: do hereditary factors play as significant a role as environmental factors do in the case of
SES and academic achievement? To approach this question appropriately, researchers had to gather
a sample of families that had both biological and adopted children. Though, it was noted that this
sample had a very restricted range in SES, since

Student Athletes And Academic Achievement
Nonexperimental Research (McMillan, 2012, p.13): Nonexperimental research is a quantitative
research design in which the researcher has no control over any of the variables or factors within a
study, and thus cannot influence the behavior of the subjects of the study.
This phrase relates to a study that I may conduct because I would like to investigate how student–
athletes' academic achievement compares to that of non–student–athletes. In such an investigation, I
would have no over influence over whether or a not a student participated in athletics nor their
academic achievement. I would only be able to analyze data and determine if there were a
relationship between the variables.
Experimental Research (McMillan, 2012, p. 14): Experimental research is a quantitative research
design in which the researcher has control over one or more of the variables within a study, which
allows the researcher to influence the behavior of its subjects. The purpose of this type of research is
to observe is there are causal relationship between the controlled factor and other factors.

Academic Achievement
Introduction: Academic Achievement is the most important skill in every student's life. It helps us to
discover more about the theories and certain known facts and also to develop our personal growth.
Academic study is a way of exploring, addressing and expressing ideas and a way of communicating
results and enjoys learning. The aims of Academic Study are to focus in becoming a well qualified
degree holder, developing skills, knowledge and even to enjoy learning. It requires hard work, self–
discipline and time management. So, this essay is mainly based on the several aims and ways of
achieving academic success.

So every second is useful in this process. Another view is self discipline, which helps to be pro–

Likewise, Academic tasks are being done by self–dependent and also by dividing several teams.
Both the tasks are important to ones Academic success. First, if we take the self–dependent, it
involves his/her individuality, we'll have a separate thinking which may be useful for you, but you
can't discuss with any one, whether it is correct or wrong. Alternatively, in the team work process,
we can have a group discussion among our teammates. So that, we'll skip over mistakes and other
major uncertainty. Finally, both the tasks are important in achieving academic studies successful. In
some high schools, they blame the teachers, if a student doesn't perform well in his/her Academic
studies.
Conclusion:
Finally, after viewing and describing the aims and the achievement of the Academic success, we
conclude saying that in becoming a well qualified degree holder and the task to achieve it, are the
highly rewarding aims in Academic Achievement. Hard work, self discipline and time management
are the tasks for succeeding it. We have also talked about the size of the class, which may be useful

Motivation And Motivation For Academic Achievements
It is important for everyone especially students to do well in school because it reflects in the
foundation of their accomplishments in life. Students are affect their ability to move to the next level
when they fail to complete some requirements. It takes many factors to motivate individuals to
continue on striving for academic achievements. (Higgins, 2008) It is said that motivation gives big
contribution in one individual's success. Motivation is defined as the organized patterning of three
psychological functions that serves to direct, energize, and regulate goal–oriented activity: personal
goals, emotional arousal processes, and personal agency beliefs. It is an interactive construct
representing the direction a person is going, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In conformity with the social norms, people learn by imitating others. However, people don't learn
only the acceptable social behaviours, they may also learn beyond the norms behaviours.
Knowledge gained in this way will have the chance to be transferred to another situation. This may
continue all the time and everywhere. In the same vein, we can argue that students spend most of
their time by learning. This can happen in different situations. It can be seen in groups while with
others. (Woldetsadik & Lumadi, 2014) In a school situation students continuously engage
themselves in the learning process. It can be observed when they do assignments, read books and do
other related academic activities. Obviously, this is a regular process exercised by most of the
students in schools. However, the habit of doing these things can't happen at a time. It needs careful
observation and systematic exercise. All these efforts lead students to make their own
meaning/understanding of the activities. Besides, it enables them to reach at a level of sharing their
own experiences and to become a continuous process.
In view of this, Battersby and Gordon (2006) have cited some of the specific situations that can
develop experience within the school context. They stated varied sources of experience. They
believe that the identification of best characteristics of both teachers and students, either in group or
individually, in the first place

Child Poverty And Academic Achievement
Child Poverty and Academic Achievement
Francesca Diona
University of San Francisco
According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, over 16 million children (22%) in the
United States live below the federal poverty level, which is $23,550 per year for a family of four.
Research has shown that a family requires an income of about twice that amount just to cover basic
needs and expenses. Using these statistics, 45% of children in the US live in low–income
households. Most parents of low–income children are employed, but unsteady employment
accompanied with low wages leave families struggling to make ends meet. The effects of poverty on
children are numerous and long lasting, such as impaired learning ability as well as social,
behavioral, and emotional difficulties. Childhood poverty can also contribute to poor physical and
mental health. Research has shown that poverty is the greatest threat to s child's well–being, but
public policies can make a difference when they are implemented effectively.
One of the most obvious and frequently researched consequences of child poverty is low academic
achievement. Duncan et al. (1994) concluded that family income and poverty level remain the most
powerful determining factors of the cognitive development of children even after many other factors
such as family structure and parental education are considered. The same study also found that there
was a positive correlation between family income

The Relationship Between Regular Participation During The...
Introduction The purpose of this research study was to examine the relationship between regular
participation in the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) afterschool programs and
academic achievement as determined by changes in standardized test scores, and district
benchmarks in Language Arts and Mathematics. Specifically, this study examined whether there
were differences in rates of school attendance, measures of academic achievement, and number of
discipline referrals for students who attended the after– school program regularly for two years as
compared to students who did not attend the after–school program regularly. A quasi– experimental
study was used for this research. This chapter includes conclusions, summary of results, and action
plan/recommendations. In the final section of this chapter the researcher will provide prescriptive
suggestions and recommendations for future research. Summary of Results The data from 120
fourth grade and 120 fifth grade students were used in this study (Tables 1.1 and 1.2). All data were
archived from school years 2010–2011 and 2011–2012 academic school years. The required
consents from parents, school district, and IRB of Kean University in New Jersey were obtained.
The results of this study indicated that the 21st CCLC afterschool programs proved to be significant
in improving two of the five target areas, math and language arts. Students in fourth grade who
participated in the 21st CCLC afterschool programs

Parental Involvement And Academic Achievement
Parental Involvement and Academic Achievement:
When does a child become affected by the lack of parental involvement in their lives? Some people
may say when the child is older, and can fully understand what's happening. Some even say that
children know and feel the effect of the lack of parental involvement when they are as young as
Kindergarteners. There are even some people who say that children will never feel the effects of the
lack of parental involvement. I disagree with each statement listed above. A child becomes affected
by parental involvement as soon as the child is conceived. Think about it, it is the mother's decision
on whether or not to take the right precautions and steps to ensure a healthy pregnancy. If the mother
is not looking out for the best interest of their unborn child, the child can have long term effects.
Even after birth a child is affected by the decision of their parents. Whether or not a child is loved or
neglected plays a major role in proper development. A child will begin to either feel comfortable or
become withdrawn when they are put in circumstances as such. Parental involvement is one of the
most important things in a child's development. It will help the child in all areas of development.
What does parental involvement do? According to the article "Defining Parental Involvement:
Perception of School Administrators, parental involvement boosts a child 's perceived level of
competence and autonomy, offers a sense of security and

Academic Achievement Strategies For Students
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT STRATEGIES Michelle Boyd EDUC655 Counseling Children,
Adolescents, and Teens American Public University March 13, 2016 Academic achievement
strategies Over the years, research has found inequalities in student achievement based on numerous
factors related to social and economic disparities. In order to close the achievement gap and reduce
student dropout rates, school counselors must develop strategies that aim at increasing student
academic success while also focusing on student's well–being. "Specifically, they must demonstrate
a variety of skills and knowledge, including how to analyze and disaggregate local achievement
data, where to find information about effective academic interventions, and how to determine the
effectiveness of interventions applied in their schools to enhance academic success for all students
and to narrow the achievement gap." (Ware, 2006) School counselors must have a plan for
increasing graduation rates and should be capable of demonstrating the needs of students based on
data driven research. Consider, students living in low–income communities where State
achievement test scores reveal that the majority of the students scored below national standards.
School counselors must identify barriers that prevent students from graduating and becoming
productive members of society. Counselor Role Students, parents and school personnel consider
school counselors to be leaders in schools. School counselors are

The Effects Of Bullying On Academic Achievement
Main findings
Before stating the mains findings of the study it is important to mention that the researchers'
hypotheses were, that the victims of bullying in 10th grade will have lower achievement in 12th
grade regardless of their race/ethnic background and that high–achieving black and Latino students,
as indicated by 9th–grade GPA, will be more vulnerable to bullying. In contrast they expect that
low–achieving Asian students, as indicated by 9th grade GPA, will be especially susceptible to
bullying. Their main focus was to examine how bullying affects academic achievement. After
conducting their research, the researchers came to the conclusion that although family background
and school characteristics notably affects students' performance, bullying also have significant
influence in students' educational achievement. As stated in the research article their studying found
that bullying decreases 12th grade GPA after considering key student and school characteristics
associate with achievement. Moreover, they concluded that the impact of bullying has an abiding
effect on students' academic achievement even after the bullying incident. The second finding of the
study gave partial support for their second hypothesis which suggested that Asian, Black, and
Latinos students were going to be more likely to experience bullying when they did not meet their
stereotype. According to research Asian students are perceived to be high achievers, thus the
researchers' theory suggested

Effects Of Alcohol And Academic Achievement
Introduction Overview University students are synonymous with drinking and testing their limits.
Maybe it's some kind of rite of passage or merely peer pressure but when you consider the average
age of students these days it hard to gain some kind of perspective. According to the most recently
available data, the median age of college students is 21.6 years, while for university students; the
median age is 22.8 years (see Appendix A). (Dale, 2012) The question needs to be asked; why
young adults of this age find it necessary to binge drink and also what the effects of this is on their
academic achievement. According to the research conducted for this report, there is most definitely a
connection between Alcohol and Academic achievement and based on the websites studied there are
three areas where alcohol affects student's grades: Firstly, drinking excessively has a negative effect
on class attendance and therefore leads to the students falling behind in their studies. Secondly, the
amount of time and the quality of time spent on studying is negatively affected by alcohol use.
Thirdly, there is a direct inverse relationship between drinking and grades. Studies have shown that
the majority of students who are at risk of failing admitted they fell into the heavy drinking category.
Please refer to Appendix B for a complete explanation of these three areas. This report will look at
the culture of drinking at University, the reasons students give for drinking, health related

ABSTRACT
This study examines whether teacher qualifications are related to student academic achievement,
specifically, we examine the relationship between fifth grade student achievement in mathematics
and reading and various indicators of teacher qualifications such as teacher certification, teaching
experience and teacher's education level. This research design takes advantage of the National
Childhood Longitudinal Study of Kindergarten Class of 1998–19999 (ECLS–K). The analysis
indicates that elementary school certification promotes student achievement in both fifth grade
mathematics and reading, while teacher's teaching experience matters ... Show more content on

To recruit and supply more "highly qualified teachers", the law has increased federal funding for
teacher training programs, such as the Troops to Teacher program that encourages military veterans
to become teachers, the Transition to Teaching program that encourages experienced professional to
become teachers, and Teach for America which recruits recent college graduates to teach in
disadvantaged schools.
Since teachers are arguably the most important education resource, recent interest in teacher labor
markets stems in part from the recognition of the importance of teachers and the recognition of
substantial differences across schools in the qualifications of teachers. A consistent finding in the
research literature is that teachers are important for student learning and that there is great variation
in effectiveness across teachers (Aaronson, Barrow and Sander, 2003; Rockoff, 2004; Rivkin,
Hanushek and Kain, 2005, Kane, Rockoff and Staiger, 2006). Furthermore, many researchers
believe that teacher quality is a key determinant of student achievement, and this has been explicitly
acknowledged under the NCLB by requiring every elementary and secondary public school teacher
be "highly qualified". To be considered "highly qualified" under the NCLB rubrics, teachers need to
have a bachelor degrees and state

Academic Achievement Gap
INTRODUCTION
Background
The National Assessment for Educational Progress (2015) reported that there is an academic
achievement gap between black and white students. The academic achievement gap refers to the
statistical difference between the scores of students with different backgrounds such as:
race/ethnicity, gender disability and income. Strategies to close the academic achievement gap are
still being explored and smaller class sizes could be an option (Achievement gaps, 2015). Class size
refers to the number of students in one class, and it varies by school district and grade. In 2003, the
Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development reported that reducing class size,
especially in elementary school could have a positive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

teacher relationships and planning and instruction time. Each statement will be labeled 1–5 to
calculate the responses. I will analyze the results of the survey by calculating the mode and median
of the responses. The mode will be the determining factor of the findings/results of the study.
Procedures
Letters will be sent to 61 elementary school principals in Washington, DC to explain the study and
to seek permission to distribute surveys to the teachers. The principals from the selected schools will
participate in a phone conversation to discuss the study and answer any questions, comments or

Socioeconomic Status and Academic Achievement
Socioeconomic status (SES) is the social status as measured by income, education and occupation
(Placeholder5). SES influences educational outcomes, for example low–income families are
unlikely to have the financial resources to purchase learning materials (Aikens & Barbarin, 2008)
such as books or computers to create a supportive learning environment (Orr, 2003). The lack of
resources ch widens the educational gap between rich and poor children (Hart, 2013; Lubienski,
2002). Research indicates that existing economic power in students' community have a strong
impact on academic achievement. For example, English (2002) found that approximately half of the
difference in test score can be attributed to demographic factors such as income, parents' education
attainment, and urban influence, rather than the schools (Lubienski, 2002).
Low SES can have a negative impact on American children's educational attainment. Poverty can
explain 15% of the deviation in student academic performance in the United States. Although the
rate is closer to the OECD average, it is much higher than the top economies including Finland,
Hong Kong–China, Japan and Norway. However, in the United States there is no significant
difference between advantaged and disadvantaged schools in terms of student–teacher ratios or the
proportion of mathematics teachers who have at least a bachelor's degree. In the United States, 5%
of students can be considered resilient, meaning that they are among the 25% most

The Key Challenge For Academic Achievement
Prompt 5: Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to
overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
Most children grow up fearing the dark or scary monsters in the closet. I grew up fearing my dad
and his alcoholism. When I was in the third grade, my dad always drove me home from school, and
I prayed to God every day that he would be sober. His breath always reeked of alcohol, and his eyes
were constantly bloodshot red. As a child, I didn't understand the consequences of alcohol until one
day, during the ride home, my dad swerved onto multiple lanes, resulting in loud, alarming sirens. I

How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
Patience is a virtue, but to me, it is a skill. It has become a trait that I possess in my relationships
with others. As a former assistant to a private tutor, I was granted the opportunity to teach a variety
of students, ranging from kids who just learned how to add and subtract to those who know how to
calculate the slope of a tangent line.
One of my students, Kyle, was a 10–year–old boy who struggles with dyslexia. Words that were
simple for others his age to read were difficult for him to understand. From this, I understood the
importance of having patience and multiple perspectives. Every day, I helped Kyle with his
homework, and every day I saw the frustration on his face when he had difficulty reading. I learned
to have patience with not only with him but also myself. I had to put myself in Kyle's shoes and try
not to get frustrated when he couldn't read a word in order to find the best method of teaching him.
Over time, his reading improved and he slowly was able to differentiate his letters. He no longer
confused his d's with his b's and his q's with his p's. With this, Kyle made me realize that I was
making a difference in someone else's life as well as my own by opening my eyes to the possibility
of working with children in the future.
Patience is difficult to maintain which is why I consider having patience a talent. It is not something

Socioeconomic Status And Academic Achievement
Introduction:
There are many different factors that affect a student's academic success in the education system.
One of the main factors that play a part in a student academic success is where their family lies on
the socio–economic scale. "The components of socioeconomic status – income, parent education
and parent occupation – are each statistically significant predictors of student achievement
(Buckingham, Wheldall, Beamnan–Whelldan, 2013). Socioeconomic status defines not just the
income of an individual but also that educational attainment, financial security, and subjective
perceptions of social status and social class (APA, 2017). Socioeconomic Status and Academic
Achievement is an important topic to discuss as many of our students in the education system are
either on the bottom of the scale or the top and to find accurate resources to help these students
succeed academically we have to look at the research regarding socioeconomic status.
Socioeconomic status affects the human functioning overall psychical and mental health. The
research has found that students from families with lower social economic status struggle more than
those students who come from a higher social economic status due to the slower development in
academic skills as they are focused on so many different skills at one time than those who are from
higher socioeconomic status communities. Along with that, school systems in lower socioeconomic
status neighborhoods are "often under resourced,

Essay On Academic Achievement
Throughout my academic career, it has always been my mission to perform at my best ability. I did
this not only for myself, but also for my family and friends who put their faith in my capacity to
achieve success. It was my family that raised me to be family–oriented and to give my spare time to
those that may need my help. By applying for the Delta Epsilon Sigma Honor Society, I am
continuing to strive for the highest level of excellence possible in academics and service to the
community.
Through my grades and persistence, I have proven that academic excellence is a pivotal part of my
education. I believe that I have achieved outstanding academic achievement through my ongoing
evolution as a student, my motivation to better myself, and my desire for success. From freshman
year to junior year, I have evolved and changed in order to learn more effectively and perform better
inside and outside of the classroom. The dynamics of college classes are far different from what I
had experienced in high school. This required me to adapt to the higher level of thinking that was
expected from me. Since freshman year of college, I have actively sought out new study methods in
order to understand classroom material. I realized that simply memorizing the material for one test
would not be beneficial to me in my future career of nursing, so I began to actively understand the
material. Adapting to the higher level of education I have received in college has helped me become

Peer Pressure Towards Negative Behaviour and Classroom...
Children are often viewed as happy, carefree beings without having to care for most stressors in life.
However, take a closer look and we would understand that children do have their growing pains as
well. In this research, children are defined as young kids below the age of 12. As they grow older,
they undergo many changes in their life, and it is of no surprise that they need to learn to cope from
the situation based on those changes. This study is designed to understand the underlying theories
and factors that could affect the children's development through the environmental influences that
may promote or affect the development of behavior and achievement through peer pressure and
classroom quality (Adams, Ryan, Ketsetzis, and Keating, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although conformity and compliance are relatively similar, they too, have differences. Compliance
is a specific response to a specific request, while conformity generally involves unspoken pressure
to behave in a particular manner. Generally, compliance involves request which could be explicit
such as using the foot–in–the–door technique. Most of the time, in compliance, the child is told to
respond or complete the task told in a desirable manner; while in conformity, a person is expected to
behave in a particular manner (Cialdini and Trost, 1998).
Compliance plays a major role in building and maintaining relationships where children learn to
behave in a certain manner to maintain status quo (Cialdini and Trost, 1998). When we comply with
an instruction, we receive praises, or lavished with social acceptance and gifts. By doing so, the
children feel accepted, wanted and loved by other peers. In a way, compliance acts as a form of
conditioning the behavior expected from their peers (Cialdini and Trost, 1998).
It is easy to view compliance as a form of concession due to the obligation children might have
towards their peers. Studies have found that with compliance, children tend to bend towards peer
pressure and it has a significant effect towards negative behavior (Adams et al, 2000; Fanti and
Henrich, 2010). This isn't surprising, as children

Low Levels Of Academic Achievement
lower levels of academic achievement and it is also known that Latino adolescents experience great
levels of depression symptoms constantly"( ).
According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2007), nearly 63% of Latino Adolescents
in the United States achieve a high school degree, as opposed to 87% of African American
Adolescents. Latino youth similarity report experiencing elevated levels of depression symptoms
than the children from other groups.
Research shows that academic achievement and depression are negatively associated to each other,
however there is lack of evidence that results in an inconclusive understanding of this relationship.
This negative relationship is seen for a variety of academic measures, which include the
standardized achievement test, grades, and teachers ratings, yet the direction of causality in this
relationship is still unknown AND Modern research, today in this association is lacking.
Previous studies have found groundwork to the presented issue. In a meta–analysis of Children's
Depression Inventory (CDI), Twenge and Nolene–Hoelcsema (2002) found that Latino children and
adolescents endorsed considerably higher depressive symptoms, obtaining higher scores on the CDI
than children from other ethnic groups. A study by Roberts and Sohaban (1992) found that
Mexican–American adolescents had an increased risk for depression when compared with European
and African American adolescents. In addition, a study by Alva and de los Reyes

Study Objective:
In this research, experimenters were curious as to see how gender differences related to cheating.
Based off this the experimenters further evaluated how competition and virtue played an affect on
how little or how much one might cheat. As noted in the title, "Gender, Contingencies of Self–
Worth, and Achievement Goals as Predictors of Academic Cheating in a Controlled Laboratory
Setting," these contingencies were the focal point of this study. Studies before had been based off
self–report and observation, which created a problem and produced errors as to the rate of cheating.

In this time, the confederate obtained the answer key and proceeded to copy the answers as well as
asking the participant if they wanted to cheat. If the participant rejected the offer they then asked
again. The confederate then left the classroom to use the restroom leaving the participant alone. This
allowed for them to either cheat off the confederates test or the answer key. The experimenter
returned shortly after and collected the test. Then, the participants took a short 4–question
questionnaire with open–ended questions about the test. Afterwards the participants were debriefed.
The research conducted in this study was experimental. You can tell because it was in a laboratory
setting where every situation was controlled. They were searching for whether or not the participants
would cheat and manipulated the variables in a way that allowed for participants to cheat by having
the experimenter leave the classroom as well as the confederate.
Results:
After the experiment was conducted and the results analyzed the study found that 57% of the
participants showed cheating on one or more of the 5 questions that could not be solved. When is
comes to differences in gender, men were shown to have cheated more then women. But, within the
number of participants who cheated the number of questions they cheated on did differ among

Educational adjustments are very important for academic achievement. Ramanna Sood (1992) found
significant relationship between achievement motivation and adjustment. According to Good (1993)
academic achievement means knowledge attained or skills developed in the school subject, usually
designated by test scores or by marks assigned by teachers or by both. Best (1977) pointed out that
academic grades assigned by teachers or scores on standardized achievement test is operational
definition of academic achievement. According to George and Ravindran (2005) many factors
contribute to academic achievement. The major ones are intelligence, adjustments, motivation,
academic stress, level of aspirations and time perception etc. In present study academic achievement
is being studied with the adjustment, achievement motivation and academic stress.
Methodology
Aim of the study The main aim of the present study is that there is possibility of prediction of
adjustment of high school students on the basis of academic stress, achievement motivation and
academic achievement.
Objectives of the study 1) To measure the academic stress, achievement motivation and adjustment
of high school students and find out whether the difference between male–female, urban–rural and

The Effect of Study Groups on Academic Achievement

  • 1. The Effect Of Study Groups On Academic Achievement The Effect of Study Groups on Academic Achievement There are many people who attend college to obtain a higher education and increase their earning potential. While attending college, there are many scholarships and academic opportunities presented to students that are dependent upon their grade point average. Academic achievement is an important aspect of a college student's academic career. Many college students spend their academic career searching for the best methods to assist them in obtaining a satisfactory GPA. There are many ways a student could study for their courses, but which method leads them to their end goal? A study conducted by Asikainen, Parpala, Virtanen, & Lindblom–Ylänne (2013) focused on a student's approach to learning in connection with their academic achievement. They found that students, who approached learning with motivation and interest in increasing their knowledge, were academically successful in their course when given understanding–based exams. Not only is motivation and interest a factor in academic achievement, but Billings (1994) conducted a study that focused on a student's learning style preference, whether individual or group study, and its impact on their attitude and academic achievement. Their research found that the students who participated in study groups were more comfortable with the computer instruction methods than those who studied independently. The findings suggest that peer interaction supports the students when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Achievement Gap And Academic Growth The achievement gap in students traditionally is determined through test scores or other measurements that are defined through some sort of measurable academic achievement. Educators hammer down test taking strategies to students in preparation for end of course stage mandated assessment that when it is all said and done the students are tired of the test before it is even administered. Student achievement should be measured based on student growth and academic growth should not be the only thing educators should emphasize during the school year. Students need to character growth is a way to decrease the achievement gap and if the student improves their character then the achievement gap will be decreased through building students up from the inside out. If we are trying to decrease the achievement gap for diverse learners it has to be done in a way that is not singling students from diverse backgrounds as defined by society today. We have to understand that all schools are truly diverse because all students and families are unique and instead of creating lessons and programs for members of the school community that are considered diverse by today's societal norms, we should have lessons that embrace what all people have in common. Lessons and programs need to be constructed with the understanding that people are at different places in terms of becoming ready to accept the true diversity of our world. • 7. Academic Achievement And Functional Performance As I have reviewed the information about Ana, it can be understood that she has areas of weaknesses and strengths, and often does not want to attend school for various reasons. It is through the presentation and implementation of the Present Level of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance that measurable goals, and other helpful skills can be identified and carried out to help better her educational journey. From the area of classroom teacher input, of the case study information, some of Ana's strengths are being able to write complete sentences, being able to independently a read a seventh grade text with a comprehension of 80%, and reading 40WPM correctly at grade level. Whereas according to the Woodcock–Johnson III Tests of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While many know that home is the foundation and can be helpful to the educational process, Ana doesn't come from a strong home. She has limited contact with her father, and her mother became pregnant while in high school, and aside from graduating from high school she had to obtain her GED. Now, her mother is working full–time to support her and her daughter. While mom has to provide, if there is no one to be there with Ana after school hours this can be dangerous because there is no one to push her to complete any school work, to study, or to do other necessary things to be academically successful. However, as I read closely, I inferred that there were others inside Ana's family, besides her mother, whom were not successful in their educational journey due to the statement from the background information within the case as it states, "Her mother wants Ana to finish school, as he wants her to be different from other family members." To some, that can be a clear indication that at this point in Ana's educational journey her mother has started to notice of the her past traits, as well as other family members actions that lead them to obtaining a GED or possibly even dropping out. However, from the reading, it appears that she a great connection with her teachers, and maybe with the help of her teacher, and a guidance counselor, along with other perspective individuals, they can pair her with a peer–buddy. • 12. Academic Achievement Research Paper Walking across the stage dressed in my cap and gown, and receiving my Bachelors Degree was one of the proudest moments I have experienced in my 32 years! Though obtaining a college degree is an enormous accomplishment for anyone, I feel the struggles I endured along the way made my success even greater! Looking back, I realized the life struggles I weathered only made the college struggles easier to overcome. I was a single mom with three amazing children and had a full–time career. Fitting college into my schedule seemed nearly impossible. Fortunately, I knew it was necessary if I wanted to be an example to my children. I wanted them to see their mom work hard to achieve a goal without giving up. I also wanted them to see the extra struggles I encountered because of not being a traditional college student straight out of high school. OBTAINING MY MBA 3 I could see my children's faces light up with pride during my graduation ceremony. They knew they were the rocks that motivated me through school. After all, I began that journey for them! Upon completion of my Bachelors Degree, I started to realize knowledge was not the only thing I gained from earning a degree. There were many benefits of receiving my degree. I received a promotion at work with an increase in pay. I gained respect from co–workers, peers, family, and friends. I felt confident and proud! Five weeks ago when I came here for the summer program, I thought I was well prepared but obviously I was wrong because I have improved so much since then. I can say that I am prepared but setting SMART goals for the nest academic year will be very important. My personal action plan is to make sure I accomplish all my smart goals. As we are going to become a successful member of the University of Maryland, SMART goals are really important to make sure we are satisfied with our lives. I developed this goal because I hate getting sick and I heard that many students get sick easily with many people around. Professional goals are very important because they set your future up. The more I get connected professionally, the easier my time will go here at the University of Maryland. My other goal is to get the connections with a professor this coming school year. Connection with the professor and other authority figures is really important for me because it will help my final and most important goal. For my final goal, I want to maintain a 3.0 GPA for this coming academic year. I was fortunate to receive a full ride to University of Maryland but I will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA. • 16. Education And Academic Achievement Gap Anna, a young first grader, squeals with delight as the whistle blows to announce the end of recess. What may seem as a sad end to the best part of the day for most students fills Anna with complete joy. Why? Anna is on the way to her favorite class–music. Anna enjoys it because she likes to sing, but what she does not know is that the class that she enjoys the most is also extremely beneficial to her academic and social life. Sadly, for many students, art classes are not commonly offered due to cost or the perception that art education is unimportant. Although seen as less important than core subjects, art education should be a part of basic curriculum because of its academic and social benefits for students. Many people believe that schools should focus on excelling on standardized testing, such as state tests and college entrance exams, and lowering the academic achievement gap. After all, these examinations are major factors in students' future decisions and schools' academic success greatly affects their overall achievement. Focusing on standardized testing is important; however, basic courses–such as English, mathematics, and science–are not the only subjects that are beneficial when preparing for these tests. In a study prepared by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities (PCAH), arts integration–focused schools were followed over a three–year timespan and it was found that they had reduced the reading gap by fourteen percent and the mathematics gap ... • 18. Student Readiness And Academic Achievement Degree of School Readiness in Kindergarten Students from Families with a Stay–at–Home–Mom vs. Families with a Working Mom Rebecca L. Mullins University of Texas at Tyler July 2016 While all forms of parental involvement in a child's education are recognized for their individual importance and merit, for the purposes of this study, we are particularly interested in parental involvement as it relates to academic achievement and school readiness of first time Kindergarten students. We acknowledge that despite empirical evidence substantiating parental involvement as the primary predictor of school readiness and academic achievement, other variables come into play such as socio–economic status, family structure (i.e. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Can mothers truly have the best of both worlds? And can we assume that if parental involvement is the key factor in a child being school ready, can we also assume that a working mom just won't offer her children the same number of quality early experiences as that of a stay–at–home mom? These are just a few of the questions surrounding this topic, and we attempt to answer some of them in this study. However, we must first explore the research that speaks to the imperative role of parental involvement and its direct relationship to academic achievement and school readiness in children, namely children entering Kindergarten for the first time. A considerable body of literature exists to support the theory that parental involvement in children's education during pre–Kindergarten years has a direct, positive impact on childhood development and academic achievement. (El Nokali, Bachman, & Votruba–Drzal, 2010; Fan & Chen, 2001; Hill & Chao, 2009; & Seginer, 2006). Parental involvement in a child's early education can take many shapes and forms including one or all of the following: parental attitudes toward education, parental behaviors to prepare children for school experiences, educational expectations of parents, etc. (Seginer, 2006). In the industries of pediatrics and education, we often hear the child's brain referred to as a "sponge". This is because 90% of a child's brain is developed before the age of ... • 20. Eating Habits Affect Academic Achievement Aubrey Craig 02 November 2017 Developmental Psychology Assignment 3 How eating habits affect academic achievement The article researched the correlation of healthy eating and physical activity and academic achievement. They also look at how parent's education affects children's test scores. The study was conducted in Australia and they used the same test to test all students. Parents also had to fill out a questionnaire sheet prior to the start of the experiment about their children. There were a fairly even number of males and females in the experiment ranging from grades 3,5,7 and 9. There were many studies done and the majority showed that physical activity had a positive impact on higher academic achievement. The experiment was conducted on fruit and vegetable intake, breakfast, sugary drinks and consumption of takeaway. The article went into great detail of the different age groups and the affects eating habits have on the children. It also touches on the socioeconomic status of the child's household and the impact that holds as well. The healthier children are outside of school the better they perform in school. The study showed that parent's academic level had an impact on the child's learning as well. The higher education level the parents had the better the children did on their test. In the same study, they showed that women performed significantly higher in English and men scored higher in math. Although in this part of the study they did not have any children ... • 22. Academic Honesty: Meaning and Achievement Academic Honesty: Meaning and Achievement Introduction There are several areas where academic honesty plays a role. These can include plagiarism, cheating, professional misconduct, and deception, among others. Most people think of the first two, but they may not consider the others because they do not realize how significant the problems can be or how many people might engage in dishonest behaviors when it comes to academics. In order to maintain academic honesty, people who are involved in the academic world in any capacity must carefully consider what they are doing and whether they are correctly citing and acknowledging what is being done by others, among other things. It is possible for a person to be academically dishonest by accident, mostly because he or she did not realize that he or she was doing something that was dishonest. Some people certainly do things like that deliberately, but others are unclear on the rules – and that can lead them to make mistakes that they would not have made had they known. In the end, it does not really matter why academic dishonesty takes place. What matters is that it should be avoided. People who are not clear on all academic rules that may apply to them need to get clarification before they undertake any kind of academic project. If they fail to do this, they can be held responsible for something they do wrong, even if they do not "mean to" do something that is not completely honest. Academic honest is not complicated, but it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. The Importance Of Academic Achievement And Race Being a racially ambiguous Hispanic woman who has dreams of a better life has not been the smoothest ride. Two issues that have ridden with me throughout my life are academic achievement and race. I am here chasing after education achievement while race is tailgating me. I try to reach education and let it lead me to different views and find more information about the world. However, by reaching education it has had me leave behind some of my cultural roots and personal connection with my parents. My race has shaped my perspective and background however, I never let it stop me or get ahead of me. Both academic achievement and race have led me to ups and downs shaping who am I and who I will become. Growing up in the United States and getting an education always caused a sort of dissociation between my undereducated parents and my intellectually ambitious self. My parents grew up in El Salvador and there was not much to be offered there in terms of education and intellectual pursuit. Education was not put on a high pedestal for my parents. In fact, my parents never did pressure me to academically succeed. I have been the one to challenge myself. I am a "scholarship boy" or perhaps a better fit would be "scholarship girl." Richard Rodriguez in his essay, "The Achievement of Desire", discusses the clash he had with his undereducated parents. He describes the dilemma of the "scholarship boy" as he states, "He permits himself embarrassment at their lack of education. And to evade ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. What Are The Factors That Affect Academic Achievement Many people wonder about the factors that play a vital role in the Academic Achievement of a Person, come to think of it there are quite a few factors that are essential for an academically successful life, they can be Parental Influence, Student motivation, Peer Effect, the geographical location or health, all of the above–mentioned factors can be crucial in a student academic life, but we may say that Parental Influence and Student Motivation are the most important ones. Adolescence is the time in which a child is going through the period of growth, this is the time when parental influence is all that matters because whatever the child sees or hears is going to shape his way of thinking, continuous support from parents play a pivotal role in academic achievement. Student Motivation can be categorized as the second most important factor in the academic achievement of a child, without motivation no one has ever been able to do anything that really matters because motivation in a person arises when the person really wants to do something to achieve something that matters, be excellent in academics. Let's talk about the influence of parents on the academic achievement of a child. Come to think of it parents can either provide the child with a positive influence or a negative influence, it solely depends on the parents. Some studies show that students spend a small portion of time in schools, while there may be no doubt that school is the most important provider ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Factors Affecting Academic Achievement CHAPTER ONE Introduction Nationwide, no education issue has received more attention with the least progress yet than closing the academic achievement and attainment gaps for minorities. Over the course of time, educational social theorists have increasingly focused on cultural and socioeconomic factors to explain the existing differences in academic achievement among students (Pishghadam & Zabihi, 2011). It is through these cultural experiences, which are widely influenced by cultural and socioeconomic factors, that students attain a certain degree of cultural and social capital that serve as a predictor of their academic success (S. Kim & H. Kim, 2009). Along with cultural and social capital, self–efficacy is also a predictor for students' academic success because it is an indicator of motivation and perseverance to reach a goal (Bandura, Barbaranelli, Caprara, & Pastorelli, 2001). Of course we know, motivation plays a pivotal role in helping students surpass the obstacles they face. As if the factors affecting the academic achievement and attainment gap were not enough, students in light of self–preservation when seeking approval of significant family members and teachers engage in greater use of self–handicapping (Leondari & Gonida, 2007). Unfortunately, many of these obstacles students face is the result of cultural and socioeconomic factors and therefore beyond their control. • 32. Academic Achievement And Advancement For Students Educators and school administrators have the largest responsibility of promoting academic achievement and advancement for all students, regardless of their cultural background. Throughout the United States, schools enroll students with different academic levels and cultural backgrounds. As of 2011, African American children embodied 16% of the public school population in the United States and Muslim children, less than 3% (National Center for Education Statistics). Keeping this in mind, students from cultural minorities can be at risk of academic failure due to the environment they are raised in. As schools educate such a vast array of students, it is crucial that educators and support staff be competent in working with a diverse group of students. School counselors, personnel, and educators need to be able to collaborate with students in helping them reach their potential in academics, social skills, future planning, as well as mental health concerns (NCES, 2009). It is imperative that school counselors are informed and understand the cultural values and beliefs of minority groups in order to help students achieve academic and personal success. Discussion Schools within the United States are progressively becoming more culturally diverse. Because of this, it is critical that educators and school personnel are aware of the difficulties and types of support individual students from diverse cultural backgrounds may need. • 34. Academic Achievement Of Graduate Education Many undergraduate nursing programs aim to fulfill many pathways into the nursing career while inspiring early achievement of graduate education. The undergraduate programs share multiple commonalities, the differences are visible in the structure of the courses structure and the contents (Billings & Halstead, 2016, p. 135). The first curriculum model of training created in the late nineteenth and early to mid–twentieth centuries was the Diploma programs. At first the program was associated with hospitals and higher educational institutions, with the goal of training nurses in clinical skills to deliver patient care in many health care environment over a period of three years. The program mainly consisted of general education courses in the biological and social sciences which was facilitated through association with a local college or university. Students were able to transfer their credits to a baccalaureate degree in nursing to further their education. The continuing progress of undergraduate program into colleges and universities has cause the decrease in diploma schools and has contributed to 10% of nursing programs educating students in the United States. The existence of ASN or associate degree in nursing (ADN) programs were initiated in 1952 by Mildred Montag in reaction to nursing shortages and to produce nurses in two years to provide care to patients with guidance of professional nurse in acute care environment (Billings & Halstead, 2016, p.135). • 36. Socioeconomic Status And Academic Achievement Socioeconomic status has long been thought to correlate with a student's academic achievement; numerous studies and research have been conducted in order to analyze this topic. Socioeconomic status (SES) is mostly defined by scientists as an individual's income, occupation, education, and prestige in society. These elements often go together, so SES is frequently measured as a combination of an individual's income and years of education because these are most easily quantified (Slavin, Robert E. pp. 71.) It has often been discussed by researchers, the correlation between SES and academic achievement, however, this study, by the Department of Psychology of the University of Minnesota, addresses the degree to which SES can be considered an environmental influence on academic achievement. In a previous meta–analysis, Dr. Karl R. White, from Utah State University, found that when measured at the individual level, the correlation between SES and academic achievement was low. While measured at a larger level, for example through the school or neighborhood, the correlation was found to be higher (Johnson, Wendy, et al. pp.1) This begs the question: do hereditary factors play as significant a role as environmental factors do in the case of SES and academic achievement? To approach this question appropriately, researchers had to gather a sample of families that had both biological and adopted children. Though, it was noted that this sample had a very restricted range in SES, since ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Student Athletes And Academic Achievement Nonexperimental Research (McMillan, 2012, p.13): Nonexperimental research is a quantitative research design in which the researcher has no control over any of the variables or factors within a study, and thus cannot influence the behavior of the subjects of the study. This phrase relates to a study that I may conduct because I would like to investigate how student– athletes' academic achievement compares to that of non–student–athletes. In such an investigation, I would have no over influence over whether or a not a student participated in athletics nor their academic achievement. Motivation And Motivation For Academic Achievements It is important for everyone especially students to do well in school because it reflects in the foundation of their accomplishments in life. Students are affect their ability to move to the next level when they fail to complete some requirements. It takes many factors to motivate individuals to continue on striving for academic achievements. (Higgins, 2008) It is said that motivation gives big contribution in one individual's success. However, people don't learn only the acceptable social behaviours, they may also learn beyond the norms behaviours. Knowledge gained in this way will have the chance to be transferred to another situation. This may continue all the time and everywhere. In the same vein, we can argue that students spend most of their time by learning. This can happen in different situations. It can be seen in groups while with others. (Woldetsadik & Lumadi, 2014) In a school situation students continuously engage themselves in the learning process. It can be observed when they do assignments, read books and do other related academic activities. Obviously, this is a regular process exercised by most of the students in schools. However, the habit of doing these things can't happen at a time. It needs careful observation and systematic exercise. All these efforts lead students to make their own meaning/understanding of the activities. Besides, it enables them to reach at a level of sharing their own experiences and to become a continuous process. Child Poverty And Academic Achievement Child Poverty and Academic Achievement Francesca Diona University of San Francisco According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, over 16 million children (22%) in the United States live below the federal poverty level, which is $23,550 per year for a family of four. Research has shown that a family requires an income of about twice that amount just to cover basic needs and expenses. Using these statistics, 45% of children in the US live in low–income households. Most parents of low–income children are employed, but unsteady employment accompanied with low wages leave families struggling to make ends meet. The effects of poverty on children are numerous and long lasting, such as impaired learning ability as well as social, behavioral, and emotional difficulties. Childhood poverty can also contribute to poor physical and mental health. Research has shown that poverty is the greatest threat to s child's well–being, but public policies can make a difference when they are implemented effectively. One of the most obvious and frequently researched consequences of child poverty is low academic achievement. Duncan et al. (1994) concluded that family income and poverty level remain the most powerful determining factors of the cognitive development of children even after many other factors such as family structure and parental education are considered. • 52. Parental Involvement And Academic Achievement Parental Involvement and Academic Achievement: When does a child become affected by the lack of parental involvement in their lives? Some people may say when the child is older, and can fully understand what's happening. Some even say that children know and feel the effect of the lack of parental involvement when they are as young as Kindergarteners. There are even some people who say that children will never feel the effects of the lack of parental involvement. I disagree with each statement listed above. A child becomes affected by parental involvement as soon as the child is conceived. Think about it, it is the mother's decision on whether or not to take the right precautions and steps to ensure a healthy pregnancy. If the mother is not looking out for the best interest of their unborn child, the child can have long term effects. Even after birth a child is affected by the decision of their parents. Whether or not a child is loved or neglected plays a major role in proper development. A child will begin to either feel comfortable or become withdrawn when they are put in circumstances as such. Parental involvement is one of the most important things in a child's development. It will help the child in all areas of development. What does parental involvement do? Academic Achievement Strategies For Students ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT STRATEGIES Michelle Boyd EDUC655 Counseling Children, Adolescents, and Teens American Public University March 13, 2016 Academic achievement strategies Over the years, research has found inequalities in student achievement based on numerous factors related to social and economic disparities. In order to close the achievement gap and reduce student dropout rates, school counselors must develop strategies that aim at increasing student academic success while also focusing on student's well–being. "Specifically, they must demonstrate a variety of skills and knowledge, including how to analyze and disaggregate local achievement data, where to find information about effective academic interventions, and how to determine the effectiveness of interventions applied in their schools to enhance academic success for all students and to narrow the achievement gap." (Ware, 2006) School counselors must have a plan for increasing graduation rates and should be capable of demonstrating the needs of students based on data driven research. Consider, students living in low–income communities where State achievement test scores reveal that the majority of the students scored below national standards. School counselors must identify barriers that prevent students from graduating and becoming productive members of society. • 56. The Effects Of Bullying On Academic Achievement Main findings Before stating the mains findings of the study it is important to mention that the researchers' hypotheses were, that the victims of bullying in 10th grade will have lower achievement in 12th grade regardless of their race/ethnic background and that high–achieving black and Latino students, as indicated by 9th–grade GPA, will be more vulnerable to bullying. In contrast they expect that low–achieving Asian students, as indicated by 9th grade GPA, will be especially susceptible to bullying. Their main focus was to examine how bullying affects academic achievement. After conducting their research, the researchers came to the conclusion that although family background and school characteristics notably affects students' performance, bullying also have significant influence in students' educational achievement. As stated in the research article their studying found that bullying decreases 12th grade GPA after considering key student and school characteristics associate with achievement. Moreover, they concluded that the impact of bullying has an abiding effect on students' academic achievement even after the bullying incident. The second finding of the study gave partial support for their second hypothesis which suggested that Asian, Black, and Latinos students were going to be more likely to experience bullying when they did not meet their stereotype. • 58. Effects Of Alcohol And Academic Achievement Introduction Overview University students are synonymous with drinking and testing their limits. Maybe it's some kind of rite of passage or merely peer pressure but when you consider the average age of students these days it hard to gain some kind of perspective. According to the most recently available data, the median age of college students is 21.6 years, while for university students; the median age is 22.8 years (see Appendix A). (Dale, 2012) The question needs to be asked; why young adults of this age find it necessary to binge drink and also what the effects of this is on their academic achievement. According to the research conducted for this report, there is most definitely a connection between Alcohol and Academic achievement and based on the websites studied there are three areas where alcohol affects student's grades: Firstly, drinking excessively has a negative effect on class attendance and therefore leads to the students falling behind in their studies. Secondly, the amount of time and the quality of time spent on studying is negatively affected by alcohol use. Thirdly, there is a direct inverse relationship between drinking and grades. Studies have shown that the majority of students who are at risk of failing admitted they fell into the heavy drinking category. To recruit and supply more "highly qualified teachers", the law has increased federal funding for teacher training programs, such as the Troops to Teacher program that encourages military veterans to become teachers, the Transition to Teaching program that encourages experienced professional to become teachers, and Teach for America which recruits recent college graduates to teach in disadvantaged schools. Since teachers are arguably the most important education resource, recent interest in teacher labor markets stems in part from the recognition of the importance of teachers and the recognition of substantial differences across schools in the qualifications of teachers. A consistent finding in the research literature is that teachers are important for student learning and that there is great variation in effectiveness across teachers (Aaronson, Barrow and Sander, 2003; Rockoff, 2004; Rivkin, Hanushek and Kain, 2005, Kane, Rockoff and Staiger, 2006). Furthermore, many researchers believe that teacher quality is a key determinant of student achievement, and this has been explicitly acknowledged under the NCLB by requiring every elementary and secondary public school teacher be "highly qualified". • 64. Socioeconomic Status and Academic Achievement Socioeconomic status (SES) is the social status as measured by income, education and occupation (Placeholder5). SES influences educational outcomes, for example low–income families are unlikely to have the financial resources to purchase learning materials (Aikens & Barbarin, 2008) such as books or computers to create a supportive learning environment (Orr, 2003). The lack of resources ch widens the educational gap between rich and poor children (Hart, 2013; Lubienski, 2002). Research indicates that existing economic power in students' community have a strong impact on academic achievement. For example, English (2002) found that approximately half of the difference in test score can be attributed to demographic factors such as income, parents' education attainment, and urban influence, rather than the schools (Lubienski, 2002). Low SES can have a negative impact on American children's educational attainment. Poverty can explain 15% of the deviation in student academic performance in the United States. Although the rate is closer to the OECD average, it is much higher than the top economies including Finland, Hong Kong–China, Japan and Norway. However, in the United States there is no significant difference between advantaged and disadvantaged schools in terms of student–teacher ratios or the proportion of mathematics teachers who have at least a bachelor's degree. One of my students, Kyle, was a 10–year–old boy who struggles with dyslexia. Words that were simple for others his age to read were difficult for him to understand. From this, I understood the importance of having patience and multiple perspectives. Every day, I helped Kyle with his homework, and every day I saw the frustration on his face when he had difficulty reading. I learned to have patience with not only with him but also myself. I had to put myself in Kyle's shoes and try not to get frustrated when he couldn't read a word in order to find the best method of teaching him. Over time, his reading improved and he slowly was able to differentiate his letters. He no longer confused his d's with his b's and his q's with his p's. • 68. Socioeconomic Status And Academic Achievement Introduction: There are many different factors that affect a student's academic success in the education system. One of the main factors that play a part in a student academic success is where their family lies on the socio–economic scale. "The components of socioeconomic status – income, parent education and parent occupation – are each statistically significant predictors of student achievement (Buckingham, Wheldall, Beamnan–Whelldan, 2013). Socioeconomic status defines not just the income of an individual but also that educational attainment, financial security, and subjective perceptions of social status and social class (APA, 2017). Socioeconomic Status and Academic Achievement is an important topic to discuss as many of our students in the education system are either on the bottom of the scale or the top and to find accurate resources to help these students succeed academically we have to look at the research regarding socioeconomic status. Socioeconomic status affects the human functioning overall psychical and mental health. The research has found that students from families with lower social economic status struggle more than those students who come from a higher social economic status due to the slower development in academic skills as they are focused on so many different skills at one time than those who are from higher socioeconomic status communities. Most of the time, in compliance, the child is told to respond or complete the task told in a desirable manner; while in conformity, a person is expected to behave in a particular manner (Cialdini and Trost, 1998). Compliance plays a major role in building and maintaining relationships where children learn to behave in a certain manner to maintain status quo (Cialdini and Trost, 1998). When we comply with an instruction, we receive praises, or lavished with social acceptance and gifts. By doing so, the children feel accepted, wanted and loved by other peers. In a way, compliance acts as a form of conditioning the behavior expected from their peers (Cialdini and Trost, 1998). It is easy to view compliance as a form of concession due to the obligation children might have towards their peers. Studies have found that with compliance, children tend to bend towards peer pressure and it has a significant effect towards negative behavior (Adams et al, 2000; Fanti and Henrich, 2010). This isn't surprising, as children ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Low Levels Of Academic Achievement lower levels of academic achievement and it is also known that Latino adolescents experience great levels of depression symptoms constantly"( ). According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2007), nearly 63% of Latino Adolescents in the United States achieve a high school degree, as opposed to 87% of African American Adolescents. Latino youth similarity report experiencing elevated levels of depression symptoms than the children from other groups. Research shows that academic achievement and depression are negatively associated to each other, however there is lack of evidence that results in an inconclusive understanding of this relationship. This negative relationship is seen for a variety of academic measures, which include the standardized achievement test, grades, and teachers ratings, yet the direction of causality in this relationship is still unknown AND Modern research, today in this association is lacking. Previous studies have found groundwork to the presented issue. In a meta–analysis of Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), Twenge and Nolene–Hoelcsema (2002) found that Latino children and adolescents endorsed considerably higher depressive symptoms, obtaining higher scores on the CDI than children from other ethnic groups. A study by Roberts and Sohaban (1992) found that Mexican–American adolescents had an increased risk for depression when compared with European and African American adolescents. Title: "Gender, Contingencies of Self–Worth, and Achievement Goals as Predictors of Academic Cheating in a Controlled Laboratory Setting" Study Objective: In this research, experimenters were curious as to see how gender differences related to cheating. Based off this the experimenters further evaluated how competition and virtue played an affect on how little or how much one might cheat. As noted in the title, "Gender, Contingencies of Self– Worth, and Achievement Goals as Predictors of Academic Cheating in a Controlled Laboratory Setting," these contingencies were the focal point of this study. Studies before had been based off self–report and observation, which created a problem and produced errors as to the rate of cheating. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this time, the confederate obtained the answer key and proceeded to copy the answers as well as asking the participant if they wanted to cheat. If the participant rejected the offer they then asked again. The confederate then left the classroom to use the restroom leaving the participant alone. This allowed for them to either cheat off the confederates test or the answer key. The experimenter returned shortly after and collected the test. Then, the participants took a short 4–question questionnaire with open–ended questions about the test. Afterwards the participants were debriefed. The research conducted in this study was experimental. You can tell because it was in a laboratory setting where every situation was controlled. They were searching for whether or not the participants would cheat and manipulated the variables in a way that allowed for participants to cheat by having the experimenter leave the classroom as well as the confederate. Results: After the experiment was conducted and the results analyzed the study found that 57% of the participants showed cheating on one or more of the 5 questions that could not be solved. When is comes to differences in gender, men were shown to have cheated more then women. But, within the number of participants who cheated the number of questions they cheated on did differ among gender. For contingencies of self–worth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
